Badly Behaved Dogs Need Basic Commands Active Living 50+ ____________________14
DEAR PAW’S CORNER:
Auctions & Antiques ____________________19
Body & Mind ____________________15
DEAR EDWARD: Every dog should be trained to respond to five basic commands: come, heel, sit, stay and lie down. Dogs need to obey their owner the first time and every time a command is issued. That may sound a little harsh, but a dog that can’t be controlled is a dog in danger. Owners need to be able to recall a dog that has slipped its leash before it runs into traffic. They need to make sure their dog will walk beside them and will sit calmly on command, especially when another dog approaches. Their dog needs to stay in position when told to do so -- whether sitting or lying down. Dogs aren’t robots, though. Like us, their discipline and training will slip if not regularly reinforced. Think about how often you and I give in to temptation and take that second cookie (or third or fourth or fifth). Just as we humans sometimes need reinforcement of good habits, our dogs need regular reinforcement of basic commands. When owners spend more time working one-on-one with their dogs, they frequently report that undesirable behaviors happen less often. The time and attention that owners give can quickly blunt attention-seeking behaviors. The AKC has a good breakdown of the basic dog commands here: www.akc. org/ expert-advice/training/ and search for “5 basic commands.” Energetic young dogs can be a handful sometimes. If you are having trouble getting your dog to respond to basic commands, enlist the help of a professional trainer.

Hi, we’d like you to meet Lil’ Romeo, a 6 month old bunny. He is super affectionate (thus Romeo) and he always wants his turn with the Pennysaver when we are done with it.
Every time I read an article about a badly behaved dog, the trainer says that the dog needs to relearn basic commands like sit, stay and lie down. Why would unrelated commands solve a behavior problem? -- Edward in Albany, New York

FOOD ALLERGY FAST FACTS Food allergies can develop from birth, and some last a lifetime. Others are developed at different ages and may be outgrown. No matter when allergies stop or start, they can be a life-threatening problem for children. Although food allergies may be managed more easily at home, they present different challenges for school-aged children. School nurses and administrative officials should be informed about food allergies, especially if they are severe enough to warrant medical intervention, such as medication. Food allergies are quite common. Consider these allergy facts that can help parents better understand any issues their children might face. • The Food Allergy Research and Education network says nearly 15 million people in the United States, many of whom are children, are affected by food allergies. • One in 13 Canadians, or roughly 2.5 million people, are affected by a food allergy, according to estimates from the Allergy, Genes and Environmental Network. • Around 7 percent of Canadian children under the age of 18 report having at least one food allergy. • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says children with food allergies are two to four times more likely to have other related conditions, such as asthma and other allergies. • Food allergies are an immune system response to the food, not a case of digestive intolerance. • Among food allergic children, peanuts are the most prevalent allergen, followed by milk and shellfish, says the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. • Food allergies can cause everything from mild reactions, such as itchiness or hives, to anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially deadly reaction. • Risk of food allergies increases when there is a parent who suffers from any type of allergic disease - even those beyond food allergies. • A recent study conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found that children are taking longer to outgrow milk and egg allergies. • Food avoidance remains the best way to prevent symptoms of food allergies. That is why reading product labels is vital.

UR STRONG I want to give a huge shout out to the many nurses I met during my stay this past month. Each and every one of you in your own way made my stay a little more bearable. From the handmade chocolate milkshake to just chatting with me, from laughing at my bad jokes to drawing funny pictures on the white board. But most of all, thanks for the care and attention given to me. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart! CAR ACCIDENT ANGEL I was in a bad car accident on Route 247 in Canandaigua on Friday, August 28th, and right after my car was hit I was
so scared and upset, but a very kind woman came to me and held me as I cried. She stayed right by side until the ambulance came. She was my angel, and I am forever grateful and blessed for her act of kindness. I did not get her name, but God bless you, and thank you so very much for being by my side. There are still kind people in this world, and she is definitely one of them! ABOVE AND BEYOND I want to recognize Alden Smith who owns Smith Solutions, our garbage service in Dansville. He is hands down the hardest working, most honest and respectful young man I know. He
goes above and beyond to serve his customers. Thank you for being outstanding in what I can imagine is a thankless job.
OUT OF SEASON
RESPONSE TO “RABBLE ROUSERS” I am so sorry if you are having difficulty opening a small business in whatever township you live in. I know that where I live, we had a beautiful hardware store set up business. It was so wonderful to have a place so close to home. They once told us what a difficult time Town Hall gave them when they wanted to open. Yet, we can have a place that brings down the neighborhood. That is fine with Town Hall, which I find odd. The hardware store unfortunately had to close its doors. How sad! I wish you well with your endeavors, but it does seem to be an upward climb for some.
someone who respects the town ordinance. Do you even know what kind of music that neighbor was playing? Do you just assume it is the kind of music you like? Such ignorance to assume all music has the same effect on everyone! If your music is loud enough to rock your neighbor’s house, you are intruding! Period. If I want free concerts, I would live next to a stadium. You were completely irresponsible to “suggest” that the original complainer move their residence in order to get some peace in their life. I suggest that you people find out who you all are, move into the same neighborhood, and play your personal outdoor concerts against each other.
My brother has 30 acres of land and has been watching a large turkey family in the fields eating grasshoppers. Something spooked them and they all flew across the road onto a certain property. This guy grabs his gun and starts shooting! My brother flipped out as he watched this. This person said he wanted a turkey for dinner after he lied about it saying the turkeys scared his horses, claiming he shot over the horses at the turkeys. My brother does not know for sure if he hit one, but if he got the hen, those babies surely won’t make it. I think these people are shooting deer, as well as rabbits and anything they can eat. What makes them special that they can shoot everything that BE GONE! is out of season? If I catch them To the people who attacked the doing this, I will turn them in. person who complained about their neighbor’s loud music, shame on you for ganging up on GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

have no sense of common courtesy. I bet if I cranked music all day next to their house, they would be the first to complain! You do not get to decide what others have to listen to. Want to take a nap? Nope! Music! Want to keep the baby asleep? Nope! Music! Want to enjoy a movie? Nope! Music! You now get to have an extra soundtrack added to your show. To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months.

DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

Gardeners My sweet corn, when a couple feet tall, produces 1-3 suckers off the base of the main stalk; why? Dave P. So-called “suckers” in this case are tillers. Corn tiller development is a normal part of corn physiology with variation by variety. Tillers generally indicate favorable
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County growing conditions which may mean plants are spaced too far apart with abundant moisture and excess fertility. Recommended spacing is with rows 30 to 36 inches apart with a spacing of 8 to 12 inches between plants within a row. Adverse weather
conditions such as hail and frost that damage the growing point in the stalk in early development can also cause tiller development. There is little effect from
tillers on the corn crop, and their presence is considered neutral, although there are some reports of positive and negative results.

AS WORLD FACES HEALTH CRISES, NEW REPORT FINDS TRUST IS VITAL (NAPSI)—Recently, health experts gathered online to forecast the future of medicine. One theme: the increasing frequency of global crises. Now, COVID-19 has brought this hypothetical threat to life, and a report by the U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP), an independent, nonprofit, scientific organization dedicated to improving public health through public standards and related programs that help ensure the quality, safety and benefit of medicines and foods, and the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence can help. Called “Trust or Consequences 2040: Will Innovations in Health and Medicine Deliver?” identifies what may happen in the future and explores the role that trust will play in helping people live longer and healthier. It identifies likely drivers of change, such as big data, artificial intelligence (AI), gene editing, risks to health systems and medicine supply chains and opportunities to improve global health. Four scenarios surfaced: Scaling the tried and true: Rolling crises spur effective global collaboration to address health concerns. Medical advances based on big data and AI are implemented gradually. The focus is on baseline healthcare for all. Dangerous uncertainty: Problems with big data and AI lead to devastating healthcare failures. Unequal access to innovation means only the rich receive advanced treatments; people turn to folk medicines, science-based medicine is questioned.
* On Sept. 28, 1941, the Boston Red Sox’s Ted Williams plays a double-header against the Philadelphia Athletics and gets six hits in eight trips to the plate, boosting his batting average to .406. * On Sept. 30, 1962, in Oxford, Mississippi, James Meredith, an African American, is escorted onto the University of Mississippi campus by U.S. Marshals, setting off a riot that left two men dead. The racial violence was quelled by more than 3,000 federal soldiers. * On Oct. 1, 1993, Polly Klaas is abducted at knifepoint and then murdered by an intruder in Petaluma, California. Her father, Marc Klaas, later lobbied to bring about California’s “three strikes” law, which gave life terms to criminals with three felony convictions, even though those committing less serious crimes also could face life in prison.
Make an Impression
A world of difference: The success of big data and AI in healthcare leads to rapid advances in personalized medicine and prevention. Not everyone can access this and disparities between and within countries perpetuate a “haves” versus “have nots” dynamic. Solving tomorrow’s problems: Smart innovation is widely distributed. Big data and AI create inexpensive diagnostic tools. Diseases become more predictable and healthcare emphasizes prevention. New treatments and technological advances curb costs. The report also suggests how public quality standards for medical products could help promote trust in health and medicine in the future—as they have for 200 years. “Many of the challenging issues we face in healthcare are recurring and persistent. ‘Trust or Consequences 2040’ points out that we must plan for the future we want, or we risk failure and an erosion of trust. Standards offer a proven approach to building trust and ensuring as many people as possible benefit from promising innovations in health and medicine,” said Ronald T. Piervincenzi, Ph.D., CEO of USP. TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips:
Online
Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * If you are looking after baby kittens that are bottle feeding, when you handle the kittens, wear pants and long sleeves. Tiny kitten nails are like razor blades they are so sharp! And of course, they love to climb up on you to get your attention. * “While my family is still participating in virtual learning, it’s important that we recognize some structure. This means preparing -- or at least planning -- lunch meals ahead of time. Our house is small, and one of us is near the kitchen. This saves us two to three periods of someone banging around in the kitchen being disruptive.” -- E. in Florida
* If you haven’t worn an item in six months (of its seasonality), it’s time to let it go. That’s been the Golden Rule for as long as I can remember. I was asked recently, Does it apply this year? I think now, like always, is a good time to look critically at your overall summer wardrobe, but I would add “opportunity” to the caveats. Meaning, if you haven’t worn it because you have not had an opportunity you otherwise would have had, save it. Those work clothes will be important again! -- JoAnn GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

* “Want to be more organized in your home cleaning? It seems many people want to have a cleaner, more organized home but get overwhelmed when putting it into practice. Start by creating a cleaning schedule that breaks down jobs into a list incorporating tasks to be done daily, weekly and even monthly or quarterly. It takes the ‘if I can’t do everything I’ll just do nothing’ factor out of play.” -- J.M. in Pennsylvania

Catch a vista of maples in that long light and you see Autumn glowing through the leaves.... DID YOU KNOW? The planet is comprised of a remarkable set of organisms that, when working correctly, produce some awe-inspiring results. However, the Earth is constantly under attack from a growing population and the mechanisms of man that can have very real environmental impacts. Education is the key to inciting real change. One in four mammals is at risk of extinction, while 78 percent of marine mammals are threatened by an early and preventable death due to getting caught in fishing nets intended for other species. Furthermore, at least 50 million acres of rainforest are lost every year, totaling an area the size of Great Britain, says the organization Solar Energy World. By making real changes, including recycling, cutting down on emissions and protecting wildlife habitats, individuals can help to preserve the world’s resources for many years to come.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Cologuard Test Worth Risk of False Positive --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old man in good health. At my recent annual physical exam, my physician ordered a Cologuard kit to be sent to me to screen for colorectal disease. I have never had symptoms of disease or problems with any part of my gastrointestinal tract. I had two colonoscopies at different times several years ago, the results of which were negative. When I got the kit, I read the patient guidelines and learned that the Cologuard test could result in false positives and that there is an unspecified increase in the risk of false positives for persons over the age of 75. A positive result from the test requires a follow-up colonoscopy, which is also riskier for elderly patients. Since I am in good health with no symptoms of any disease, I decided I did not want to risk a false positive result from the test, which would require a follow-up colonoscopy. Did I make the right decision? -- E.G. ANSWER: Cologuard is a brand of test that looks at DNA in stool for evidence of cancer. Certain DNA mutations are highly suggestive of cancer. In addition, Cologuard does an immunochemical test looking for blood. Because it combines these two techniques, Cologuard is more sensitive than only a test looking for blood. Compared with colonoscopy, Cologuard is about 92% sensitive in finding cancers, meaning it will miss about 8%. With improved sensitivity comes a lack of specificity, which means you could have a false positive result. The Cologuard can say that you have an abnormality when a colonoscopy would indicate normal. For 45% of people with a positive Cologuard test, no abnormalities will be found upon colonoscopy. You are right that false positives are more prevalent in older individuals. There are two reasons that I think the Cologuard is still a reasonable choice, despite the fact that it isn’t as good as colonoscopy. The first is that I continue to recommend a screening test for healthy 77-year-old men, and although colonoscopy is my first choice, a normal Cologuard test prevents a need for colonoscopy, and a false positive would lead to the same colonoscopy you would have gotten anyway (although there probably is more anxiety after a false positive test). The second is that a person with an abnormal Cologuard and a normal colonoscopy may be at risk for an abnormality that wasn’t found on colonoscopy. A study looking at people in this category found a 25% risk of abnormality on follow-up colonoscopy, if the Cologuard was abnormal again one to two years later. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I had lung surgery in 2014. The scar is still red and sore. I got no instructions on how to deal with it. Do you have any suggestions? -- J.S.B. ANSWER: That’s a very long time for the scar to still be red and sore, and I would encourage you to have the surgeon or your regular doctor take a look. For people with redness and soreness in a scar shortly after surgery, I recommend silicone gel (there are many available), as it has been shown to be effective. Many people recommend vitamin E oil, but well-done studies have shown this does not help and may harm the cosmetic appearance. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Spencerport Education Foundation Serves Up Platefuls of Hope By Amanda Dudek
I
f there is a silver lining to COVID-19, it may be that it has given service organizations the opportunity to shine. While things are still difficult for many, times were especially hard earlier this year when the country shut down. A number of area families were suddenly struggling and caring for their children who came home indefinitely from school. The Spencerport Education Foundation stepped up and stood in the gap to meet their needs. At barely two years old, the Spencerport Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization which partners with Spencerport Central School District to support the school district’s mission, particularly helping to meet teacher needs, and to provide funds outside of the school. Sara Snarr, board member of the Foundation, explained. “The Spencerport Education Foundation awards scholarships,” she said. “We awarded four $5,000 scholarships this past spring. We also help fund the materials that teachers and other school professionals need that just aren’t in the school budget; things like furniture and books. We were able to purchase a play therapy kits for the school psychologist, for example.” The additional funds are deeply needed. “Over the last decade or two, a new trend of diminishing budgets and diminishing tax bases has emerged,” said Snarr. “Several other school districts have already established foundations like ours.” She is hardly alone in her sentiments. The Foundation’s board is comprised of local parents and business members as well as the former Spencerport Superintendent. When COVID closed Spencerport’s schools, the Foundation was quick to act. “Businesses and families were hurting” Snarr recalled. “People were out of work, and no one was going out to eat. So, we launched the #SpencerportTogether Meal Initiative, the brainchild of Spencerport Superintendent Dan Milgate. When they closed the school, he came to us with a way to support both area families and local eaterries affected by the virus.” Superintendent Milgate suggested that the FoundaArea restaurants preparing meals for tion partner with area resfamilies in need! taurants to provide meals for families in need. The school was still allowed to provide lunches by the state, but there was no support for evening meals. These restaurants would take turns providing dinners Monday through Friday until the end of the school year, and the Foundation would help cover the costs. In this way, families would be fed, and local food establishments could make up some of their lost revenue. The idea was an extraordinary success. “Restaurants were showing up with 400-600 meals!” Snarr said. “The families paid $2 a meal, and the remainder was made up by the Foundation. Families would drive up, and we had the process down to a science to prevent any infection. There were so many restaurants that participated-such a great response. It was incredible!” Snarr could not say enough about the generosity of participating eateries. “The restaurants were amazing partners,” she said. “Cars would line up with their cash ready, and most nights, they would give away all

the meals, 400 on average, within an hour and a half.” Snarr named several establishments, noting they went above and beyond for local families. Several Spencerport area families were grateful, as well. “It was very nice for a lot of families,” shared Snarr. “There were families and kids who wrote thank you notes that said things like Thank you for the yummy meal! One family even had a thank you song! It was a very positive experience, our first enormous project, and something we really enjoyed.”By the time the school year came to a close, the Spencerport Education Foundation and local restaurants had served over 22,000 meals. Other businesses were also inspired the Initiative. “One spectacular printer made #SpencerportTogether t-shirts which we used to raise funds for the program,” said Snarr. “When the program ended, we had a little bit extra, so we donated it to the Spencerport Food Pantry which is run by several churches. These were other nice community partnership pieces
During the end of the 2019-2020 school year, Spencerport Education Foundation launched its #SpencerportTogether Meal Initiative! which came out of this.” On the heels of its recent triumph, the Spencerport Education Foundation has already made plans for the fall. “We are looking at some fundraising opportunities and planning on bestowing more grants while continuing to award our scholarships,” said Snarr. “We are also looking at several other internal projects and other ways in which we can support the district through these difficult times. We have encouraged Spencerport schools to keep in touch just in case there are any surprise needs with COVID or needs for things they cannot meet with their budget. This community is fantastic about donating, and we are excited to fill these needs.” For more information or to donate, visit www.SpencerportEducationFoundation.org. Enjoy this article? Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

SCHOOLS, PARENTS AND COVID-19 (NAPSI) — K–12 education has gone through a seismic shift in the wake of COVID-19. Parents are finding themselves thrust into homeschooling, and educators, into virtual schooling. EdChoice, a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, teamed up with Morning Consult to release results of a recent poll to find out how it has affected families and teachers. They found that parents are clearly anxious about sending their kids back to school; 66 percent said they were concerned their children will be exposed to the virus in school. The majority (68%) are also concerned their child is missing important instruction time. The silver lining to so many states having closed down brick and mortar schools: A solid majority of parents said they felt at least somewhat prepared for the transition to e-learning and distance learning. Parents are slightly more likely to say they felt very or somewhat prepared (70%) than were teachers (67 percent). There is only one type of school choice program that allows families to receive funds into a flexible spending account to customize an education for their child. They are called education savings accounts, or ESAs. And according to EdChoice’s Public Opinion Tracker, 67 percent of Americans support them. These results are part of a new, larger polling project, the EdChoice Public Opinion Tracker. is new dashboard updates every month with results of public survey questions not only on COVID-19 but also on K–12 education topics such as schooling, testing, spending and school choice. Learn More: For more findings from EdChoice’s Public Opinion Tracker visit www.edchoice.org.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.

[L]o! the eventide of the year, the melancholy season of Autumn.... the widowed quail, which is shivering on the fallen tree, utters her plaintive cry, causing a momentary sadness to oppress his heart. The oak rears its head above the plain, but is stripped of its foliage,—naked and alone,—a fit emblem of man in the hour of adversity. We see the leaves floating on the bosom of the river, and we feel that such too will soon be our condition.
