STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4 • • • • • • • • • • 1.
8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf 2 cups half-and-half 4 egg yolks 3 tablespoons light brown sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/2 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2) Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the
toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter. 3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed. 4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. 5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream. Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half. Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

Poetry can be used to describe (comparing, talking about, or expressing emotion) many things. It can make sense or be nonsense. It can rhyme or not. It can have many shapes and sizes; it can be serious or funny. There are many “poetic forms” (forms of poetry). Some of them are: Sonnet, Haiku, Ballad, Stev, Ode, Free verse, Blank verse, thematic, limerick and nursery rhymes.
Can you create your very own haiku poem? A haiku is a Japanese poem of seventeen syllables in three lines of five, seven, and five,

traditionally evoking images of the natural world. You can make your haiku about anything or anyone, just remember the 5-7-5 rule. If you

Plants depend on insects to transfer pollen as they forage, and many insects are quite beneficial to have around. While some pollinate, others are predators of other pests. • Antlion: A foe of ants, they’ll help eat and control ant populations and pollinate flowers. They pose no threat to humans, either. • Big dipper firefly: These colorful insects feast on earthworms, slugs and snails during the larval stage. Fireflies add drama to evening gardens with their twinkling lights. • Garden spiders: Although some spiders can be venomous, many are quite handy to have around the garden. They’ll help control pest populations that can damage plants and crops. • Dragonflies: These arial artists that zip around the yard are consuming smaller insects that would otherwise pester plants and humans. • Blue-winged wasp: This wasp attacks the larvae of Japanese beetles, helping to control beetle populations. • Bees and butterflies: Butterflies and bees are some of the best pollinators out there, and each can add whimsy to gardens.

How to Help Pets Fleeing Ukraine Find Safe Haven
“Hi my name is
Waylon, you know after Waylon Jennings. I’m 13 weeks old, my Mom and Dad got me all the way from Pennsylvania! I know I’m a piece of work, I just love to run and play in the snow! My Mom and Dad are always reading the Penny Saver so let’s see if they’re surprised when they see me here.”
PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
The perfect fit for your dog!

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The tragic war in Ukraine weighs heavily on my mind, as I’m sure it does for many others. And I wonder every day if the people fleeing are able to take their pets. If so, how can I help both pets and their owners coming from Ukraine? -- Gerry A., Utica, New York DEAR GERRY: Animal welfare and humanitarian organizations are actively teaming up as I write this, working to find ways to provide food and shelter to the pets that Ukraine’s refugees (now over 2 million and counting) brought with them on their perilous journey to the west. Countries bordering Ukraine -- Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovenia -- have temporarily relaxed their restrictions on pets. But many pets need care and foster homes because their owners had to leave them and return to Ukraine to join the fight. While donations to major organizations like the Humane Society will help, you can make the most impact by donating directly to groups that are at the borders right now, setting up pet shelters and providing medical care to pets as they arrive. Unlike some large groups, which take a significant percentage of donations to cover administrative costs, donating directly to smaller organizations means that a much higher percentage of your dollars go directly to food, shelter and medical care (including vaccinations) for Ukraine’s animals as they arrive at the borders. A Euronews.green article profiles two groups that are on the ground right now. Go to the site and search for “Ukraine’s Pet Refugees” to read about them. And the Belgian-based Eurogroup for Animals lists several more groups that are directly helping animals caught in this upheaval. Go to its website and search for “animal protection organisations-ukraine” to learn more. To check out a registered charity before sending it money, visit www.charitynavigator.org to search by name. We stand with Ukraine. You Can, Too. BY AMANDA DUDEK
T
he news headlines and footage pouring in from the Ukraine are incredibly tragic. “Pregnant woman & her baby injured in Mariupol maternity hospital bombing have died, AP reports,” “Strike hits facility for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities near Kyiv, says regional council,” and many such headlines, like these from CNN, stream to American homes, spaced by minutes, not hours. Many of us around the globe watch, horrified, asking, What can I do? In the face of this devastating war, more than 2.5 million Ukrainians have fled their country, arriving as war refugees in several neighboring nations. Some arrive with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Although it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate relief organizations, we are bringing you four we feel confident are truly supporting Ukrainians in need. ROCMaidan: ROCMaidan is a Rochester-based community organization that delivers medical supplies and equipment, arranges humanitarian aid, and supplies injured Ukrainians with medical support. Group members recognize that Ukrainians have faced conflict for some time, have been supporting them for several years, and are continuing to send supplies to many Ukrainian hospitals. Formed to support democratic Ukrainian voices in 2014’s EuroMaidan, ROCMaidan’s diverse professionals “provide information, advocacy, connection and communication with federal, state, and local officials, information sharing with media and educational institutions, and the general public.” rocmaidan.org | contact@rocmaidan.org | 1040 Jackson Rd, Webster, NY 14580 | (585) 872-0240 Global Empowerment Mission: With its teams on-site in Medyka, Poland, Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) is at the Ukrainian border in one of the countries currently receiving thousands of Ukrainian war refugees. Established in 2011 as a nonprofit first responder organization assisting with global disasters, GEM quickly found itself sending support to crises in 28 countries and all 50 U.S. States as well as U.S. Territories. “In 2017, GEM began operating Bethenny Frankel’s #BStrong initiative, which fills this need by supplying unrestricted cash card distributions, allowing beneficiaries to meet their individual needs.” According to its website, GEM was almost immediately active along the Ukrainian border. GEM arrived “along the Ukrainian-Polish border within 2 days of the start of the crisis.” Its plan includes the following: • Aid into Ukraine: Since the cities under siege are running low on supplies, your donation is importing and purchasing food, water, basic necessities, medicine and medical equipment needed in a war zone. These are handed off to our Polish partner who delivers the aid to cities like Kiev. • Relocation assistance: Since the border cities are inundated with refugees, we are rapidly identifying people who have friends and family within the EU that can house and support them…[providing] transportation, lodging and airfare to the destination of their loved ones. Also, we are helping refugees out of tents and into warm homes of Polish families through our connection with the Polish churches.
• Stability housing: With our Polish partners…renting additional housing facilities to refugees who are unable to find temporary housing through Polish families…We are [providing] housing, food and transportation. • Non-Ukrainian refugees: We have identified a special class of refugees where the needs are much more complicated due to visa situations and language barriers…[providing] a service that other NGOs may not currently provide. • Expansion into Hungary & Romania: …Scaling outside of Poland to partners in two other Ukrainian border countries to provide aid. With respective warehouses in Poland and Hungary, millions of dollars in supplies on the way, millions more in aid, hundreds of thousands of pounds of food, and more, GEM encourages everyone to join them in supporting the men, women, and children desperately fleeing Ukraine. globalempowermentmission.org | info@globalempowermentmission.org | 1810 NW 94th Ave Doral, FL 33172 | (800) 995-7604 Ukrainian Red Cross Society: For over 100 years, the Ukrainian Red Cross Society (URCS) has faithfully served the people of Ukraine and beyond, sending over 100,000 of its nurses to the front during World War II. Now, in the face of Russia’s ongoing invasion, they are performing continuous disaster relief due to explosions, fires, and the many other ravages of war. This relief includes “coordinating the reception of humanitarian aid from abroad and its further distribution, working at border crossing points with refugees, providing first aid, providing food at the railway station to people who have been forced to flee their homes due to armed conflict and assisting them in resettlement, delivering humanitarian aid to bomb shelters, medical institutions, places of temporary stay, and more. redcross.org.ua/en | national@redcross.org.ua | Ukraine|0-800-331-800 Sava’s Safe Haven: Something that can sometimes almost be forgotten in the midst of Ukraine’s humanitarian crisis is the effect this upheaval would necessarily have on Ukrainian families’ beloved pets. For many, it is as unthinkable to leave their furry family members behind as it would be for many of us. This week, in our Paw’s Corner feature, Sam Mazzotta encourages a reader worried to review an article on Euronews.green entitled, “The countries and organizations helping Ukraine’s pet refugees find a safe haven.” This article sites a Romanian group called Sava’s Safe Haven, stating that the group helps refugees working to bring their pets into Romania with them. Also, Sava’s Safe Haven takes pets from single men ages 18-30 who are currently forbidden to leave Ukraine which is under martial law. As Mazzotta wisely encouraged, check out a registered charity before sending it money; visit www.charitynavigator.org to search by name. www.savassafehave.com| info@savassafehaven.com | Romania | +40-766-749-680

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
How Well Do You Know Your iPhone? Did you know there is a flashlight on your iPhone? I just found mine. Courtesy of BoomerTECH Adventures online, I’ve not only learned that there is a flashlight, but how to access it. BoomerTECH Adventures is a website aimed at seniors (although I don’t know why it wouldn’t appeal to anybody with an Apple device) who want to expand how they use their iPhone, iPad or Mac computer and learn about all the features. Right on the home page of the website (as of this writing) is a free video about turning slides into digital images and a free video about how to change the email password on your iPad. In addition, there is a link to its blog covering a wide variety of Apple device-related topics. Not all the videos are free, however. There are full courses, such as the Introduction to iPhone Basics ($30), which includes four videos and a course booklet. There is Introduction to Zoom Basics, wherein you can learn how to have those video calls with your family ($30). This one consists of eight videos that cover everything you need to know from setting it up to how to have appropriate lighting. Maximizing Your iPad’s Potential is a $30 course that covers over a dozen areas and iPad topics, such as basic navigation, personalizing the look and making folders, communicating with messages and video, using the camera, editing photos and much more. Mac computer owners aren’t left out -- there is an Introduction to Mac Basics ($30) course. BoomerTECH Adventures was started by a trio of educators, all of them seniors, which means they know we learn new things in different ways at different paces. If you have an Apple iPhone and want to know how to do more than place a call, check BoomerTECH Adventures (www.boomertechadventures. com). (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Upcycling: Transforming the ‘Old’ into a Better ‘New’ Turn old or discarded furniture, cabinets and doors into fresh new creations through “upcycling” -- high-end “recycling” that reduces trash at landfills by refurbishing or repurposing existing pieces, often enhancing the value. Doors and more: Solid wood doors make great tops for tables and kitchen islands, old-fashioned screen doors hung from the ceiling can store pots and pans, and old windows make attractive wall hangings used “as is” or with additions, such as photos.

DID YOU KNOW? Data from the United States Department of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

* Here’s a great tip for freezing strawberries: Slip a berry into each section of an ice-cube tray, and then stack trays in the freezer. When frozen, transfer berries to a zippertop bag and store in the freezer. They won’t stick together, and you can just use what you need. * “Vinegar (1/3 cup) works just as well as rinsing agents in your dishwasher. Simply add it to the wash with your regular dishwasher detergent. It can help with cloudy glassware.” -- W.C. in Washington * “Another great use for a length of nylon stocking, or a knee-high, as we used to call them: Slip over your pet brush and poke the bristles through. Brush your cat or dog as normal. When you’re done, you can pull the knee-high stocking right off and all the hair will be caught inside!” -- P.K. in Pennsylvania * If you have a pickle- or jelly-jar lid that’s stuck on, try using the handle end of a butter knife to tap a few indentations around the edges. This can sometimes loosen the seal, making it easier to remove the lid. * “When you get to the bottom of a bag of chips or a box of crackers, there usually are a lot of crumbs. I save ours in a baggie, then add them to breadcrumbs to bread fish or chicken. They add a lot of flavor, and it’s basically free! It’s funny, because I see packages of flavored breadcrumbs at the grocery store, and they are pretty expensive.” -R.L. in Virginia * Fresh ginger can be frozen. Simply grate as needed. The flavor remains, and it will stay fresh much longer.

S E V RA Whiteout Rescue On March 12th during a whiteout, I ended up in a ditch on 20A in Geneseo. I want to thank the gentleman in the dark SUV who pulled my vehicle out. He was a lifesaver. He wouldn’t take any money. I was frantic, but thanks to him, I made it home. Thanks to the driver from M&R who also helped. There are good and caring people out there, and I am so appreciative!
It’s [not] a gas! Why do all gas stations raise prices as fast as they do? What about all the gas that is in tanks in the ground that was purchased at lower price? Are they are making a ton of money at our expense? Science, not Politics Climate change is not confusing if you follow the science. But it is if you follow the politics. The science has been studied for decades, and the connection between CO2 emissions and climate change is clear. Human activity is affecting the climate in mere decades, not the eons of naturally occurring climate change. Who’s denying it? People whose political dogma disagrees with proven scientific fact.
Shop Happy Many thanks to Margret and all the other volunteers at the Thrift Shop in Livonia. The shop is clean, well-organized, and prices are very reasonable. They provide a good service to our area and surrounding areas. They also collect items for and provide assistance to the Livonia Food Pantry. Good job; you are appreciated! Thanks, Midlakes! Amazing job to Midlakes High School on their opening weekend of Elf The Musical! The students have worked so hard, and it shows. We all need some laughs right about now, and the show did not disappoint!

3 SIMPLE WAYS TO A HEALTHIER HEART
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Too Much Fruit Juice Can Worsen Diabetes ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a friend who recently learned she’s prediabetic. She’s also very obese. She has started juicing her fruits and vegetables in order to lose weight and get healthier. Isn’t it just healthier to eat produce whole as opposed to making juice out of it? -- N.F.E. ANSWER: Eating more vegetables and fewer simple sugars and processed starches is a good idea for nearly all people who want to eat healthier, and it may help people lose weight. Fruits also are an important part of diet, but for people with or at high risk for diabetes, I recommend no more than one or two fruits with meals, and that the fruits be whole. Fruit juice is absorbed much more rapidly into the blood, so excess fruit juice can actually precipitate diabetes or worsen diabetes control. Juicing makes it easy to consume vegetables and fruits, but in addition to the problem with faster sugar absorption, taking food in liquid form usually isn’t as satisfying. That’s not true for everyone, but since reducing calories is essential for weight loss in nearly everybody, juicing may have the opposite effect, unfortunately, and I don’t recommend it in general. Of course, what doesn’t work for one person may work great for someone else. If she is able to change her diet, reduce unhealthy choices and lose some weight, then juicing may be just right for her. I would still recommend against too much fruit juice, and to have fruits mixed in with vegetables, preferably taken with some protein and healthy fat. Never forget that exercise is the other critical intervention for diabetes prevention or control.
Heart disease is a formidable foe. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for approximately 800,000 deaths every year. The Government of Canada notes that heart disease is the second leading cause of death in that country, annually accounting for tens of thousands of deaths. (Note: Canada’s population is slightly more than one-tenth the population of the United States.) While heart disease exacts a devastating toll on the United States and Canada, its reach extends far beyond North America, as the American College of Cardiology notes that cardiovascular disease accounts for 31 percent of all deaths across the globe. In spite of the prevalence of heart disease, men and women are not helpless against it. In fact, there are many ways for men and women to reduce their risk for heart disease. 1. Maintain a healthy weight. The American Heart Association reports that between 60 and 70 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. Carrying around extra weight takes a toll on the body, increasing a person’s risk for heart disease and stroke. Overweight or obese men and women can work with their physicians to develop a plan for effective, long-term weight loss, a plan that will likely include a combination of diet and routine exercise. 2. Understand and manage blood pressure. The AHA notes that high blood pressure, a common condition affecting roughly one in three Americans, is often referred to as “the silent killer” because it does not necessarily produce symptoms. Blood pressure measures the force pushing outward on the walls of blood vessels as they carry blood oxygen to the body’s organs, and the force created as the heart rests between beats. Over time, the arterial walls of people with high blood pressure may become stressed and develop weak spots or scarring that makes them vulnerable to the buildup of plaque. Plaque buildup can increase the risk of blood clots and stroke. Blood pressure can rise as a person ages, so managing blood pressure involves routinely checking it and making certain changes, such as eating healthier foods and exercising more often, if it is high. 3. Control cholesterol levels. High levels of low-density lipoprotein, often referred to as “bad” cholesterol, can increase a person’s risk for heart disease. The AHA notes that excessive amounts of cholesterol can be deposited into the arteries as plaque. When that happens, it leads to a condition known as atherosclerosis, or a narrowing of the inside of the artery walls. That narrowing leads to an increased risk for heart attack and stroke. Men and women should get their cholesterol levels checked at least once every four to six years beginning at age 20. Men and women who have been diagnosed with high cholesterol should recognize that cholesterol is only found in animal products, so a diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains and low in animal products can provide a simple way for men and women to lower their cholesterol. A more thorough and detailed plan to lower cholesterol levels should be discussed with a physician. More information about heart disease and how to combat it can be found at www.heart.org.

Love is defined as an “intense feeling of deep affection.” Folks, that wording describes the love of Jesus towards you. When I looked at ways to express love back to a person, things listed were giving them something special, spending time with them, learning about who they are, doing something for them & giving them uninterrupted time. That’s the way sinful Pastor Andy needs to be. “But God showed His love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Rom 5:8 If you haven’t read it, the Song of Solomon is a love story in the Bible that is never read or taught. Much of it is an allegory towards us and our true lover: Jesus. It talks about the Hug and the Kiss of our Lord. I love that! I love this verse & share it often: “His left hand is under my head, And his right hand embraces me.” Song of Solomon 2:6. There you are in His arms! I like to think of this next verse as how Jesus sees us, after His blood has washed our sins away & made us clean: “You are altogether beautiful, my darling, beautiful in every way.” Song of Solomon 4:7. Then in 1:2 it says, “Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth – for your love is more delightful than wine.” That’s awesome! To close, for those judging Churches out in the Brockport area that think money & power are more important than people & you judgmental churches having difficulty understanding any true, simple, easy love to Jesus & from Jesus, I close to you with this quote: “Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those others who just could not hear the music.” Angela Monet

• Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go. • Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery. • Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized. • Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates. • Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible. • Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion. • Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

The 50th Reunion of the Class of 1972 is 8/26/2022 8/27/2022! Please contact Nancy Tripp at 352-509-5700 or email at GAHSClassof1972@gmail.com so we can plan for your attendance. Weekend Highlights: Friday: Arcadia tour and Memorial Service for departed classmates. Saturday: Celebrations at Greece Canal Park. We’d love to see you there!!
Bonus hunting: Another pitfall to avoid is the temptation to use credit cards instead of cash in an effort to accumulate more travel miles or cash back bonuses. Consumers should aspire to use cash over credit whenever possible. Doing so ensures consumers are not spending money they don’t have, which is one of the most common ways that individuals build significant consumer debt.
GUIDELINES FOR HOMETOWN EVENTS: Events should occur on a specific date at a specific time. Due to the increasing number of submissions, we will no longer be able to publish the following items: • Businesses/schools seeking registration for classes or program • Organizations seeking crafters or vendor • Organizations seeking donations of items Genesee Valley Penny Saver reserves the right to approve/reject events for publication. WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

SHOW ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONALS THEY ARE APPRECIATED Business owners and bosses and high-level executives may have their names on placards or monogrammed stationery, but the most successful businesses tend to be those in which the entire staff, from the company president to administrative professionals and so on, works together. Administrative professionals, sometimes referred to as “admins,” handle everything from spreadsheet generation to PowerPoint presentations to preparing schedules. Admins are often the unsung heroes of the workplace, and while they may not receive much fanfare, without the continued efforts of admins, businesses may grind to a halt. In recognition of the roles they play, administrative professionals have been honored during a special week each April for the past 60 years. Called Secretary’s Day upon its inception in 1952, the holiday was later expanded and the name changed to incorporate all of the employees who play pivotal administrative rolls in companies big and small. Administrative professionals do a lot to keep companies afloat and operating smoothly. Supervisors, managers and other higher-ups can take every opportunity to show their appreciation to these hard, yet often unsung, workers. Page 26

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Go easy on yourself. While many successful people strive for perfection, achieving perfection is unlikely, if not impossible. Successful people often admit to being their own worst critics, but don’t beat yourself up if you endure some trial and error. Mistakes can be a great teacher, so use any you make to your advantage.
LEAVING A JOB GRACEFULLY Watch out for social media. It’s best to keep resignation plans to yourself and off of social media. You never know who is reading your posts, and bad-mouthing a soon-to-be-former employer can lead to hurt feelings and poor references. Resist the urge to rant about what’s making you unhappy at work or brag about a new position to your social network.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On March 23, 1839, the initials “O.K.” are first published, in The Boston Morning Post. Meant as an abbreviation for “oll korrect,” a popular slang misspelling of “all correct” at the time, OK steadily made its way into the everyday speech of Americans. * On March 25, 1933, the newly commissioned USS Sequoia becomes the official presidential yacht. Previously, the Department of Commerce had used the Sequoia as a decoy to catch Prohibition lawbreakers. * On March 27, 1973, actor Marlon Brando declines the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in “The Godfather” as a protest against Hollywood’s portrayal of Native Americans in film. The first performer to turn down a Best Actor Oscar was George C. Scott, for “Patton” in 1971.
