Dan Fox 585-208-8144 triggerboy322@aol.com HOW EVERYDAY PEOPLE CAN CUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION Curtailing energy consumption is a great way for people to protect the planet’s natural resources and save money at the same time. Part of the difficulty with regard to reducing energy consumption is that energy plays such a big role in our lives. Smartphones and tablets have become must-have items, and these items, though not necessarily big consumers of energy, must be plugged in and charged. But individuals won’t have to unplug from their lives to reduce their energy consumption. In fact, there are several easy, non-invasive ways for everyday people to reduce their energy consumption. Reducing energy consumption does not require substantial sacrifice, but it can produce substantial savings and benefit the planet in myriad ways. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

How can I get my hydrangeas to bloom? - Mary R. There are several reasons why macrophylla hydrangeas don’t bloom. They need winter protection to keep the buds from freezing. Deer often will eat the buds, which form the previous season. And often they gradually reduce their blooms each year because they don’t thrive in our cold winters. There are other kinds of hydrangeas that do bloom reliably in our weather. Both panicle hydrangeas and arborescens hydrangeas bloom very well here. The arborescens varieties are most deer resistant. I spray the buds on my panicle hydrangeas with deer re-

pellant as soon as they emerge in be adjusted. Pruning can affect the timing of bud-break. You should do this soon after flowers have fallen. Do not prune in late summer, fall,

or winter; late pruning often results in removal of flower buds. Old bushes with runaway growth will need severe pruning. Large single trunks may be cut back to a stump to encourage growth of new stems from the roots. Clumps of overgrown stems may be thinned out about a third a year starting with oldest, weakest and damaged.

CROSSWORD

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Husband Refuses to Wash His Hands ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband and I are both 74 and in general good health. He never washes his hands when he comes in from working as a public accountant. He doesn’t wash his hands when he sneezes, or after touching meat and poultry when he cooks. He smokes and is a functioning alcoholic. He says it’s not necessary to wash fruit before you eat it and tells me I don’t know what I am talking about. He has been on Lipitor for several years and eats steak almost every night. On the other hand, I wash my hands when I come in from work and before preparing meals, and have always washed fruit before eating it. What’s his secret? Does he have strong genes? -- T.M. ANSWER: Eating well and taking good care of yourself don’t guarantee a long, healthy life. The converse is true as well. I have heard so many stories about Aunt Martha (or Gertrude or Helen), who drank, smoked and lived on bacon until she was 105, but your lifestyle does give you a better chance at living longer and healthier, and of feeling better right now. Smoking increases the risk of dying from any cause. A 74-yearold man who has smoked all his life has about the same risk of dying as an 82-year-old nonsmoker. One can do a similar risk analysis with diet. But some people, through a combination of good genes and good luck, manage to live long, healthy lives despite poor lifestyle choices. Even though some individuals will not have the expected outcome, smoking is still bad. So is eating steak every night. Washing (or at least rinsing) produce is a good idea.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year, I started getting Raynaud’s.

16 17 19 20 22 23 24 26

I can remember from my youth that my father had it, so it didn’t seem too terrible. It’s not just the fingertips that turn white, but also some of my toes are affected. I asked people who know of it or have it how one gets this. What is the cause? No one knows. So I asked my doctor. Even he said he did not know. How do I get these episodes, and what can I do to prevent them? -- R.S. ANSWER: Raynaud phenomenon is an exaggerated response to cold or stress, causing color changes in the skin of the fingers and toes. There is a long list of causes of Raynaud phenomenon. Often, no cause is ever found (in which case it is called primary Raynaud, which just means we don’t know what’s causing it). The most common known causes are the autoimmune rheumatic diseases, especially scleroderma, lupus and Sjogren’s syndrome. Hypothyroidism is an unusual cause, and some drugs can cause it as well. The current thinking is that primary RP is caused by abnormalities in the alpha receptors in blood vessels (alpha receptors respond to adrenaline and similar molecules). Keeping the whole body -- and especially the hands -- warm is the first step. Sudden temperature changes can trigger the effect. Warming the hands in warm water at the onset of an attack can stop it. Anxiety makes it worse, so a positive attitude can really affect this condition. Medications, such as amlodipine, may be necessary for prevention in more severe cases.

Five Ways To A Better Move (NAPS)—The next time you’re among the estimated 40 million Americans a year who move into a new home, heeding these five hints can help you stress less: 1. Know what’s happening when. Make a list of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. It should include budgeting, decluttering, hiring movers, buying supplies, and updating medical and financial records. 2. Keep all your critical move-related names, phone numbers and addresses in one document. You may want to store them in your smartphone and have a hard copy. Be sure you can easily access your moving contract, real estate and mortgage documents, as well as information you may need about utilities, banks and schools. 3. Have a first-night box. Once you’re in your new home, you don’t want to have to hunt for such things as box cutters, tools, device chargers, bed linens, shower curtains, toiletries—and the coffeepot. 4. Stay connected to what matters most—family, friends, Internet, Wi-Fi and TV. Arrange your services in advance of your move at CableMover.com. 5. Get help. For a one-stop, customizable way to stay organized, there’s the Moving Guide from CableMover, downloadable at www.cablemover.com.

Recently, Golden Coin Laundry/Dry Cleaning was kindly helpful, without their customer even asking. A partly disabled, senior citizen was helped getting some drapes with special instructions washed, then when dry and pressed, back out into the car again. There was good, honest, communication So tonight, I was out walking my dog in our peaceful village as I often do. My dog is, of course, leashed with doggy bags on hand and is on the municipal side grass. My dog is in her senior years and likes to stop and piddle periodically, even if there’s nothing left. Out of nowhere, this woman pulls over and proceeds to proclaim that I must pick up the dog poop, insinuating my dog had pooped in her yard, with a hoity toity attitude. My dog had not pooped at all, and if she had, I certainly don’t need to be pre-advised of my responsibilities. The woman quickly rushed away, surely realizing her own arrogance and haste. My dog is a good judge of character, and we both concur hers really stinks!

and empathetic, capable assistance. That was such good, local customer service, one could recommend them for future business. Thank you, Golden Coin.

The Avon Circle looks beautiful with the Military banners hanging and the gardens planted and starting to bloom. new units. Two electricians showed up on time but slow walked the job. After 3 hours, both of them had only managed to install 4 thermostats total. Turns out they were overheard talking to each other about how they had hooked the wires up incorrectly, and when the units were placed back in the wall, the wires actually came loose! These novice mistakes, including troubleshooting them, took up valuable time that we were paying for by the hour. When I contacted the owner to voice my concern, he unfortunately made more excuses for his employees than he did offers to help me, his customer. I felt duped.

put on a grave need to be brought back or enforced. It looks trashy. You will find Christmas decorations, Easter decorations, multiple containers of fake flowers, multiple figurines, and even beer cans, beer cans on graves of young people who died because of alcohol. This is not showing respect for the dead. We are in May, and the holiday wreaths are still on the graves. I understand our need to grieve and to display our love for someone who has passed, but we can’t overdue and infringe on the rights of neighboring graves. We have to keep things neat. Please, everyone go clean up your loved one’s grave.

Recently an individual commented within a post about increasing hate towards certain groups across the country. I have to disagree with that and am offended by that opinion.

I have no hate feeling for any group and hope that the poster of that comment feels the same way. We, as a country, need to move forward. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) There’s nothing an Aries Lamb likes less than having to tackle a humdrum task. But finding a creative way to do it can make all the difference. A more exciting time awaits you this weekend. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Finishing up a job on time leaves you free to enjoy your weekend without any Taurean guilt pangs. A romantic attitude from an unlikely source could take you by surprise. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Moving in a new career direction might be seen by some as risky. But if you have both the confidence to see it through and the facts to back you up, it could prove rewarding. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Holding back on a decision might be difficult, considering how long you’ve waited for this opportunity. But until you’re able to resolve all doubts, it could be the wiser course to take. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You still need to move carefully where financial matters are concerned. Better for the Lion to move slowly than pounce on a “promising” prospect that doesn’t keep its promises. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A rejection of an idea you believe in can be upsetting. But don’t let it discourage you. Get yourself back on track and use what you’ve learned from the experience to try again. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) The early part of the week could find you looking to balance your priorities between your family obligations and your career responsibilities. Pressures begin to ease by week’s end. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An associate’s problem could cause unavoidable delays in moving ahead with your joint venture. If so, use the time to look into another project you had previously set aside. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Although a financial problem could be very close to being resolved in your favor, it’s still a good idea to avoid unnecessary spending for at least a little while longer. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Support for some unwelcome workplace decisions begins to show up, and continues to build, so that by week’s end, the gregarious Goat is as popular as ever. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Congratulations. Deciding to attend a social function you might have earlier tried to avoid could turn out to be one of the best decisions you’ve made in a long time. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Getting into a new situation could prove to be a more difficult experience than you expected. Don’t hesitate to ask for advice in coping with some of the more irksome challenges. BORN THIS WEEK: Your strong sense of duty makes you a valued and trusted member of your community. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On May 27, 1941, the British navy sinks the German battleship Bismarck in the North Atlantic near France, where it fled because it was leaking fuel. The German death toll was more than 2,000. Three days earlier, the Bismarck had sunk the British battlecruiser Hood.

Show Mom You Care: Have A Conversation About Long Term Care Insurance (NAPS)—This year, as you look back at the many years your mother cared for you, consider the possibility that she may require care herself someday. Long term care insurance can help ensure that your mother will get the care she needs, should there come a time when she requires help managing some of the activities we associate with independent living. Millions of Americans require long term care during their lifetime,1 which includes assistance with simple tasks like bathing, eating and dressing—trivial things we do every day without a second thought. In reality, the type of care needed to provide assistance with these activities can be expensive and is generally not covered by traditional health plans or Medicare. It’s important to keep in mind that women, in general, live longer than men. This means that women may be more likely to need care at some point in their lives than their male counterparts.2 Should that need arise—whether it’s assistance to perform activities of daily living or supervision due to a severe cognitive impairment—it’s likely to be provided by a family member or friend. Unfortunately, this may not be an ideal option, with many families living far apart from each other. And, your mother may not be willing to place that burden on you or even a close friend. The good news is, she is eligible to apply for coverage under the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP). Encourage your qualified relatives to plan now The best time for your family members to consider long term care insurance is long before they need it. Because the FLTCIP is medically underwritten, it’s important for your qualified relatives to apply when they are in good health to avoid the risk that a future illness or condition may prevent them from obtaining coverage later. Also, premiums are directly related to age. This means the younger people are when they apply for coverage, the lower their premium. You may wish to consider applying for coverage as well, as a way to help secure your family’s future. With benefits designed specifically for the federal family, the FLTCIP offers a smart way to help protect your savings and assets should you or your loved ones need long term care services someday. Many members of the federal family are eligible to apply for coverage under the FLTCIP, including federal and U.S. Postal Service employees and annuitants, as well as active and retired members of the uniformed services. Certain family members, or qualified relatives, are also eligible. Qualified relatives include your spouse, domestic partner, parents and parents-in-law, and adult children. For a complete list of who is eligible to apply, visit LTCFEDS. com/eligibility. For personalized assistance, call (800) LTC-FEDS ( (800) 5823337)/TTY (800) 843-3557 to speak with a program consultant. 1 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Dansville Castle on the Hill Pilot turns 100 By Amanda Dudek with special thanks to Jeff Roberts

T

his past February, Pete Wilkins, pilot for Bernard McFadden, turned 100 years old, after being honored for his “100 orbits around the sun,” as Pete quipped, on February 6th during a dinner presentation with the Professional Pilots Association (PPA) in Columbus, Ohio. That evening they honored him, PPA member 32, receiving a recognition for being an original and oldest continuing member of the PPA. Pete, who now lives in Ohio, grew up in Hornell and was born in Bath in 1919. He served in the Army Air Service in 1937, and he soloed a Waco 10 aircraft. He managed the Dansville Airport 1950 through 1952, giving flight instruction there. He also flew for Bernard McFadden, the operator of Castle on the Hill resort. Jeff Roberts, one of Pete’s personal friends, recalls Pete Wilkins describing this experience. “Bernard was rather aggressive and very much into men’s physical fitness,” said Roberts. “This was post WWII era. Men’s health was prominent. Bernard could bring in the press; they would chase him everywhere.” Roberts explains that Bernard McFadden decided to create jump boots using shoes with springs attached. Pete was the pilot flying Bernard this day and the demonstration was a success. “He put on the boots and a parachute and went all over the airport,” said Roberts. “The military bought the contract.” “Bernard decided that the next demonstration he would do would be to attract a Navy contract,” Roberts said. Bernard told Pete that he wanted to be dropped into Niagara Falls. “He told Pete, ‘I have a new Mae West,” which is a floatation device used when a pilot jumps into the water. He planned to pull a cord and have it inflate around him. He believed if he used it in Niagara Falls, it would be a good demonstration. He knew the Navy would be watching.” There was just one problem with Bernard’s plan. “At that time, a lot of people were trying to do the barrel routine,” explained Roberts. “It had become illegal to drop things into Niagara Falls. If anyone dropped anything, including one’s self, from an airplane, both that person and the pilot would be responsible. A pilot would be held accountable for any object that fell from his airplane. He could lose pilots license, go to prison and never fly again.” Pete refused, and Bernard fired him. Bernard never jumped into Niagara Falls. Pete moved on to Corning Glass as a corporate pilot, then to Columbia Gas in 1952 at LaGuardia Airport. In 1959, he was named Chief Pilot of Columbia Gas, and in 1961, the aviation department was moved to Columbus, Ohio. Pete flew many corporate aircraft including Lockheed Lodestars, Twin Beech’s, Grumman Gulfstream I’s and Merlin IIA’s. He went from aviation to the executive branch of Columbia Gas. He wanted to prove that pilots could be executives, too. After 28 years at Columbia, Pete retired in 1981, went back to college and met a young college student from Dansville named Jeff Roberts. “He told stories of Dansville and Castle on the Hill that you could just listen to all day,” said Jeff who was just starting a 30+ year career in corporate aviation. Jeff flew for Columbia Gas for 12 years.

who eventually ran Dansville Airport. “It was a pretty hopping place back when the military contracted out the basic training,” said Roberts. “Now, some of those planes are so old that people wouldn’t know what they are except in museums.” Pete Wilkins also met people who worked for Glenn Curtis of Hammondsport who invented the airplane as we know it, using ailerons to do the steering.” “Pete was instrumental in developing aviation,” said Roberts. “He testified in Congress regarding several aviation bills and impacted the institution of the FAA.” Pete Wilkins was one of the first people who trained in simulators, as well, and was one of the original members to train on LaGuardia’s first simulators. “He established a rule at Columbia Gas that pilots be offered an early retirement package when they turn 60,” said Roberts. He is very engaging “He also instituted duty time restrictions for pilots and talkative... at corporate organizations, which had not been done.” a very smart man. As impressive as his - Jeff Roberts accomplishments are, Pete himself is at least as remarkable. “Pete has a photographic memory,” observed Roberts. “People who worked for him said he was an excellent leader who knew how to handle personnel problems.” Roberts explained that in aviation, people problems are a primary concern. “Pilots are a unique, self-starting type of people who often have strong personalities,” explained Roberts. “Pete’s excellent leadership skills made him very good at dealing with that. It also helped that he could remember everything!” According to Roberts, Pete’s personality also works in his favor. “He is very engaging and talkative,” said Roberts. “As something of a history buff, he enjoys talking about the past. He is soft spoken, but if you take the time to sit down and listen to him, all kinds of interesting facts roll out. He remembers things that happened in the 30s, 40s, 50s. He is a very smart man.” Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? Go to My Hometown at www.gvpennysaver.com to view previously posted stories and to post your own. “Pete would talk about people that he trained to fly,” Roberts recalled. One of them was a man named Schwenzer

TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions.
