DON’T CALL IT “PATTY’S” DAY St. Patrick’s Day is a time for celebration. Celebrants look forward to the festivities every March. In this time-starved society, brevity in writing and conversation has become par for the course. So in their hurried text messages, posts and tweets, people unknowingly may refer to St. Patrick’s Day in a shortened, albeit incorrect, manner. According to experts on Irish culture, the shortened “Paddy,” and not “Patty,” should be used when referring to St. Patrick’s Day. Paddy is derived from the Irish name “Pádraig,” which is the equivalent of the English “Patrick.” “Patty” is actually a shortened form of Patricia, which happens to be a woman’s name. One individual has gone on his own personal crusade to correct people around the world as to the correct way to refer to St. Patrick’s Day, should the name need to be shortened. Marcus Campbell has copyrighted the website PaddynotPatty.com to inform people why “Paddy” is the correct way to shorten the name. Campbell goes on to state that Paddy, Pat, Packie, Podge, Pád, and Pod are all perfectly acceptable substitutions for Patrick. Just steer clear of Patty. It is important to point out that some people are offended by the name “Paddy,” which has been used in the past as a derogatory name for persons of Irish descent. However, there are many who still stick to the facts that Paddy has long been used as a nickname or term of endearment for Pádraig or Patrick. Whether one prefers to call it St. Patrick’s Day or Paddy’s Day, it’s best to steer clear of using Patty in any reference to Ireland’s patron saint.

Are You “a Little Irish?” By Amanda Dudek Courtesy of The Ontario County Historical Society of the leading men of Canandaigua who was prominently interested in the construction of the Erie Canal. Port Gibson, the only village in Ontario county which touched the Canal, was named in his honor. Glasner described early Irish immigrants, like Henry Gibson, as brave, hearty people. “Many came before the steamship was invented; a perilous journey by sailing ship that took months, and they were not always welcome,” a fact epitomized in an American Ballad, ca. 1880. “I’m a decent boy just landed from the town of Ballyfadd. I want a situation; yes, I want it might bad. I seen employment advertised, ‘Tis just the thing, says I. But the dirty spalspeen ended with ‘No Irish need apply.’” John Flannigan’s Regionally Famous Oyster House, est est. 1867 1867. Photo courtesy of the Ontario County Historical Society.

Y

ou may have heard people say that we’re all a little Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. If you live in New York, there is a good chance this is actually true! According to Forbes, Albany, Syracuse and Long Island all rank in the top ten list of America’s Most Irish Metros. Another source reveals the Greater Rochester Area’s most Irish city, using data from the U. S. Census Bureau’s 2013 American Community Survey and only considering places which have populations of 10,000 or more. With approximately 24% of residents claiming Irish heritage, lucky Canandaigua came in first as the local most Irish city. Edward Varno of the Ontario County Historical Society and Museum generously provided information regarding Canandaigua’s Irish heritage. “In 1983, the museum displayed an exhibit entitled, ‘Citizens by Choice: An Ethnic History of Ontario County,’ by Laura Glasner,” stated Varno. Glasner’s research offers unique insight into the history of the Irish population in Canandaigua and across Western New York. “Of the European immigrants, the first to arrive in large numbers were the Irish,” wrote Glasner. She explained that while the building of the Erie Canal and the first railroads brought Irishmen across New York in the 1820’s and 30’s, the large Irish settlements arose after the major emigrations during the 1840’s. “The largest emigration of all came during the years of the potato famine,” she stated. “Between 1845-1850, nearly 1,000,000 people in Ireland died and more than 1,000,000 emigrated to America. In these five years, Ireland lost 1/4 of its population.” According to Glasner, many Irish families lived on property owned by landlords, and they used their crops to pay their rent. When the potato blight left many without income or food, they were evicted by the thousands. “The Irish came to the United States en masse,” Glasner wrote. “Their descendants who remember their grandparents [these first immigrants] only recall that they had no desire to reminisce about their homeland. For most, the memories were bitter.” A pamphlet published by the Irish Emigrant Society of New York confirms that these Irish men and women arrived in impoverished condition, stating, “Thousands continually land entirely penniless and are at once in a state of destitution.” Even so, these Irish immigrants didn’t let this stop them from “becoming responsible and respected community members [who] contributed to the economic, cultural and social fabric of their communities.” According to Glasner, large Irish communities, which were mostly Catholic in a very Protestant country, were also often responsible for the establishment of local Catholic churches, citing the formation of Roman Catholic congregations during the mid-1800s (Canandaigua 1844, Rushville 1853 and Victor 1856). One notable Canandaiguan whom Glasner mentioned, Henry Gibson, was a resident of Irish ancestry. Gibson was a key figure in the development of successful banking in the village and was also important in the early railroad interests. Glasner related that in 1820, he rescued the Ontario Bank by establishing firm banking practices, strict but fair. In 1841, he was elected president of the Rochester and Auburn Railroad and later became Director of the New York Central. He was one

Nevertheless, these Irish men and women persevered. “They worked in factories [and] building roads,” wrote Glasner. “There are numerous accounts of their labor on the Canal as well as the railroads. By the turn of the century, Irish Americans held positions in local government, police departments and fire companies.” A local newspaper, the Ontario County Times, demonstrates their influence, as well, featuring “The Galway Fair” and “History of the Celts” as two articles in one of its February 1852 editions. “Although there is evidence of Irish settlement in many towns, such as Canandaigua, Victor, Honeoye and Geneva... little of their culture or tradition was nurtured or cultivated,” stated Glasner, explaining that it wasn’t until the establishment of the Republic of Ireland in 1937 that a reawakening began of Irish traditions. “Music, art and industry [again flourished] within the country [Ireland] and across the United States,” observed Glasner. “Today there is a greater awareness among the descendants of the Irish immigrants. Irish societies are being formed... for the purpose of teaching and sharing Irish culture.” On this Saint Patrick’s Day, we wish you well with a traditional Irish blessing: “May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; The rains fall soft upon your fields And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand.” Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’ll want to discourage well-meaning but potentially ill-advised interference in what you intend to accomplish. Your work has a better chance to succeed if it reflects you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Bovine’s well-deserved reputation for loyalty could be tested if you learn that it might be misplaced. But don’t rely on rumors. Check the stories out before you decided to act. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’ve been going on adrenaline for a long time, and this unexpected lull in a recent spate of excitement could be just what you need to restore your energy levels. Enjoy it. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Friends can be counted on to help you deal with a perplexing personal situation. But remember to keep your circle of advisers limited only to those you’re sure you can trust. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Securityloving Lions do not appreciate uncertainty in any form. But sometimes changing situations can reveal hidden stresses in time to repair a relationship before it’s too late. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time for single Virgos to make a love connection. Be careful not to be too judgmental about your new “prospect” -- at least until you know more about her or him. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your sense of justice helps you resolve a problem that might have been unfairly attributed to the wrong person. Spend the weekend doing some longneglected chores. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might feel justified in your anger toward someone you suspect betrayed your trust. But it could help if you take the time to check if your suspicions have substance. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Ignore distractions if you hope to accomplish your goal by the deadline you agreed to. Keep the finish line in sight, and you should be able to cross it with time to spare. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your creative self continues to dominate through much of the week. Also, despite a few problems that have cropped up, that recent romantic connection seems to be thriving. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) As curious as you might be, it’s best to avoid trying to learn a colleague’s secret. That sort of knowledge could drag you into a difficult workplace situation at some point down the line. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Instead of spending too much time floundering around wondering if you can meet your deadline, you need to spend more time actually working toward reaching it. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a natural gift for attracting new friends, who are drawn to your unabashed love of what life should be all about. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Workout Supplements Are Sum of Their Parts ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My son, in his mid-20s, uses a preworkout energy supplement to which I am opposed. Can you tell me if this is harmful so that I can show him scientific research and your educated and medically sound response? The supplement he uses contains alanine 1 g, creatine 1 g, arginine 1 g, tyrosine and velvet bean seed extract. It also contains 150 mg caffeine. -- B.G. ANSWER: It’s not always easy to tell what supplements are safe or effective for the condition they are marketed for, and the information available through a web search often is biased. One place I start to get information is Medline Plus (www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/), which has reliable information about many supplements, but you often have to search individually. In this case, alanine, arginine and tyrosine all are amino acids. These are the building blocks for proteins, and are safe in reasonable amounts. Creatine is generally safe for adults, and has been shown modestly effective at helping improve strength in young male weightlifters. One gram is a fairly low dose and is generally considered safe. The 150 mg of caffeine is about the same as a cup of strong coffee. Velvet bean seed extract I had to look up. It has been used both as a food crop and in traditional medicines. It has toxicity at high doses, but at the dose in the supplement, it should be safe. In summary, I think this supplement is not likely to be harmful if taken in recommended doses, and it might have some small benefit. There is nothing in the supplement that cannot be obtained easily and cheaply from food, apart from the velvet bean, which I think has the least proof of benefit of all the components of the supplement. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 49 years old and in good health. I recently was told by my doctor that what was first diagnosed as a swollen lymph is actually a condition called carotidynia. Can you please publish some information about this condition and what I can expect? Sometimes it is worse than at other times, but it never really goes away. I would not consider it painful; it is just uncomfortable, and when severe, it radiates up into my ear and down into my chest. -- S.W. ANSWER: Carotidynia (literally, “pain in the carotid artery”) can come from several distinct causes, some of which are catastrophic, such as a carotid artery dissection, which is a tearing of the lining of the artery. In some cases, carotidynia may be a form of migraine. After surgery or angioplasty to the carotid artery, one also can get pain that comes from the carotid itself. In the case of no other cause being identified, the condition is sometimes called idiopathic (which simply means “of unknown cause”) carotidynia, and some, but not all, experts think this condition comes from a type of inflammation around the artery, which can sometimes be seen on CT or MRI scan. Idiopathic carotidynia is usually treated with anti-inflammatory medicines -- ibuprofen, or prednisone in more severe cases. Most cases respond quickly, in a few days or up to a few weeks. However, I want to emphasize the need to thoroughly search for other concerning causes of neck pain. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Your Medicare Advantage Plans Offer A Broader Mix Of Benefits

Marge, like some people her age, can’t drive anymore. She gave up her keys. But she could use a lift... a visit to a doctor, a trip to the grocery store, a stop at the bank. If you have a couple of hours a month to help, please call us to volunteer. We’ll provide you with training and supplemental insurance. LIFESPAN 244-8400, ext. 142

(NAPS)—Whether you’re new to Medicare or an established beneficiary, take a close look at Medicare Advantage plans during this year’s open enrollment period. Those policies may offer the best mix of benefits to meet your health needs. Medicare Advantage plans provide Medicare benefits through private health insurance companies. These plans, which currently cover approximately 21 million people, typically include extra benefits and services not available on original Medicare. Medicare.com, a popular non-government health insurance resource, looked at benefits offered by more than 2,500 Medicare Advantage plans available through Medicare.com for 2019. Here are some key benefits available and the percentage of Medicare Advantage plans offering them: • $0 monthly premiums: 45 percent of all plans; • Dental: 88 percent of plans; • Vision exam: 98 percent of plans; • Vision glasses: 84 percent of plans; • Hearing: 90 percent of plans; • Fitness: 99 percent of plans; • Routine transportation: 37 percent of plans; and • Meals: 50 percent of plans. Early in 2018, the government paved the way for Medicare Advantage plans to offer even more benefits, including adult day care services, respite care for caregivers, and in-home assistance with activities such as dressing, bathing and managing medications. Health insurers will also be able to provide safety devices to help prevent injuries in the home, including stair rails, grab bars and temporary mobility ramps. Although most insurers won’t offer the next wave of benefits until 2020, some of the services may be available during this year’s open enrollment period, which runs through December 7, 2018. It’s important to look at costs when shopping for Medicare Advantage plans too. That’s true even if you already have Medicare Advantage, since premiums, deductibles and co-pays change from year to year. Insurance companies often tweak their list of covered drug and prices, too, for Medicare Advantage plans that cover prescription drugs, and that can mean higher out-of-pocket expenses for you. Learn More For further insights, go to www.medicare.com. Many Medicare Advantage plans offer a surprising array of new benefits.

Perhaps in part to its widespread use in St. Patrick’s Day decorations and imagery, the shamrock is widely considered the official symbol of Ireland. But while St. Patrick is believed to have used the shamrock to teach the Christian notion of the Holy Trinity, the clover was never an official symbol of Ireland. That designation is held by the harp, which has been featured on the coat of arms of Ireland for centuries. The harp also was adopted as the emblem of the Irish Free State when it separated from the United Kingdom in 1922.

All blessings to the person who found my father’s wrist watch outside Canandaigua Wegmans and brought it into the store. It has been professionally cleaned and I am now wearing it with great joy! It is a wonder it was not run over and smashed beyond repair. Thank you, good person! It is simply a good day love and peace to all at the beginning of Lent. It will soon be spring!!!!! On Monday, March 11th, my husband, adult son, and I went to the labs in Brockport to get blood drawn. I don’t know many people who enjoy having blood drawn. I for one, am dog to the same groomer for the last twelve years, and year after year, I have given this groomer gifts for Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, the groomer’s birthday. I handed this groomer a large tip on Christmas week, and I have never even gotten a thank you or well wishes for the holidays, nothing. This groomer is fantastic, but the lack of manners shocks me. Saying thank you is not a hard thing to do! Since going to Brockport labs for my blood work up, I have slowly but surely started to gain confidence that I will not have a problem when doing so (I have bad veins). I owe that to the WONDERFUL people who work at Brockport Labs. THANKS again to STEPHANIE M, TINA D., and last but not least, KIRK W. Job well done! See you ou in six months!!! mont nths nt hs!!! hs

Mr. Glass Fax Resume to 271-1279 or Email: alex@mrglassfix.com DID YOU KNOW? In a survey of 3,500 working professionals, Allied Van Lines found that 17 percent had relocated for a job. Roughly 50 percent of those who relocated did so for career advancement and/or more money, while 8 percent moved to be closer to family or for other relationship reasons. Moving is often characterized as stressful, and 31 percent of survey respondents who moved indicated that finding a home was the most challenging part of relocating for a job. Acclimating to a new community (29 percent), finding services such as utilities and medical care (13 percent) and making friends (12 percent) were also cited as some of the most challenging parts of relocating for a job. As difficult as relocating can be, 64 percent of those who had relocated expressed positive sentiments toward their job relocation, while just 7.5 percent harbored negative feelings about relocating (28 percent were neutral).

OVERCOME YOUR PADDY’S DAY HANGOVER Get to the gym. While it might seem impossible after a night spent overindulging in alcohol, some moderate exercise may help you feel better, at least mentally. Make sure you’re fully hydrated before hitting the gym so you’re less vulnerable to muscle cramps or injury, and drink water while exercising as well. Exercise releases neurochemicals and hormones, including endorphins, that can help boost your mood and provide some energy on a day when you might benefit from both of those things.

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

9 DAY NOVENA PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH: O, St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the Throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires. O, St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine Head for me, and ask Him to return the Kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls, pray for me. Amen. Say for nine consecutive mornings for anything you may desire. It has seldom been known to fail. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Whoever reads this prayer or hears it or carries it, will never die a sudden death, nor be drowned, nor will poison take effect on them. They will not fall into the hand of the enemy, nor be burned in any fire nor will they be defeated in battle. Make this prayer known everywhere. Imprintatur, Most Rev. George W. Ahr, Bishop of Trenton. May is the Month of St. Joseph, husband of the blessed Mother. St. Joseph’s Feast Day, March 19th. This Novena is in Thanksgiving for our Joanna.
