The DIY movement has inspired many homeowners to tackle home repair and remodeling projects on their own. DIY projects can be rewarding, and many homeowners who have embraced the DIY movement have discovered talents they never before knew they had. But no matter how simple popular home renovation television shows make remodeling projects appear, homeowners should know that such undertakings are far more difficult than they appear on television. Homeowners who overestimate their abilities and the time they have to complete projects can cost themselves substantial amounts of money. In fact, there are a variety of reasons homeowners might want to work with professional contractors when tackling home improvement projects.

FRESHEN UP YOUR HOM E FOR THE SPRING SEASON Give rugs and floors a deep cleaning. Recirculated air may be full of dust and other microscopic particles that end up blow ing throughout your home. Also, it’s easy to track in dirt and other materials on your shoes that become imbedded in carpeting. At least once a year, rent or enlist the surfaces of carpet and upholstery cleaners to give floors a thorough cleaning. You may be surprised at how clean and fresh a home looks and smells once rugs and carpets are deep-cleaned. You also can make a dry carpet cleaner using baking soda, corn starch and desired fresh herbs for fragrance. Sprinkle and then vacuum up after a few hours.

REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS Gutters and downspouts are designed to move rainwater away from the home. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well. First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter. Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling.

CROSSWORD
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Is Acupuncture for Real? ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: You have mentioned acupuncture as a treatment for several conditions. I have read otherwise. How strong is the evidence for its use? -- R.L. ANSWER: The effectiveness of acupuncture for over 50 different medical conditions was reviewed by the Cochrane Collaboration, an evidence-based medicine group. Some of these show significant benefit; for example, acupuncture improves pain and function in people with fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis, when compared with placebo pills. Acupuncture also was better than doing nothing and better than some other treatments. On the other hand, the Cochrane group could not find enough evidence to say whether acupuncture is effective for many other conditions, such as depression or shoulder pain. More importantly, some authors have argued that the benefit from acupuncture is a placebo response, and that the apparent benefit of acupuncture compared with a placebo pill is merely that acupuncture is a more effective placebo than just a pill. There certainly is evidence that even surgery has a potential for a placebo response, and one interesting recent study showed that people with Parkinson’s disease got more improvement in motor skills from a placebo pill they were told cost $1,500 than they did with the identical placebo if they were told it cost only $100. This shows me that our minds have a tremendous ability to improve our bodies if we really believe we can. I think that to a very large extent, and perhaps entirely, the real benefits seen by people who undergo acupuncture are a manifestation of the placebo response. Acupuncture has far fewer side effects than many medications and helps people with a variety of conditions. Whether its effect is “real” or placebo is almost not an issue.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year, I started getting Raynaud’s. I can remember from my youth that my father had it, so it didn’t seem too terrible. It’s not just the fingertips that turn white, but also some of my toes are affected. I asked people who know of it or have it how one gets this. What is the cause? No one knows. So I asked my doctor. Even he said he did not know. How do I get these episodes, and what can I do to prevent them? -- R.S. ANSWER: Raynaud phenomenon is an exaggerated response to cold or stress, causing color changes in the skin of the fingers and toes. There is a long list of causes of Raynaud phenomenon. Often, no cause is ever found (in which case it is called primary Raynaud, which just means we don’t know what’s causing it). The most common known causes are the autoimmune rheumatic diseases, especially scleroderma, lupus and Sjogren’s syndrome. Hypothyroidism is an unusual cause, and some drugs can cause it as well. The current thinking is that primary RP is caused by abnormalities in the alpha receptors in blood vessels (alpha receptors respond to adrenaline and similar molecules). Keeping the whole body -- and especially the hands -- warm is the first step. Sudden temperature changes can trigger the effect. Warming the hands in warm water at the onset of an attack can stop it. Anxiety makes it worse, so a positive attitude can really affect this condition. Medications, such as amlodipine, may be necessary for prevention in more severe cases.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be tempted to be more assertive when dealing with a job-related matter. But a carefully measured approach works best at getting the cooperation you’re looking for. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) While others urge you to act now, you instinctively recognize that a move at this time is not in your best interests. You should know when to do so by week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A busy schedule keeps you on the move for much of the week. But things ease up by the time the weekend arrives, allowing you to reconnect with family and friends. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Travel dominates the week, and despite some delays in getting to where you want to go, the overall experience should prove to be a positive one in many ways. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your Leonine selfconfidence comes roaring back after a brief period of doubt and helps you get through a week of demanding challenges and ultimately emerge triumphant. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Virgos who have made a major commitment -personal or professional -- should be able to tap into a renewed reservoir of selfconfidence to help them follow through. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You soon could receive news from a surprising source that could cause you to change your mind about how you had planned to deal with an ongoing job-related problem. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A surprise move of support from a colleague who has never been part of your circle of admirers helps influence others to take a new look at what you’ve put on the table. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) While a bold decision to take an “I know what I’m doing” approach impresses some colleagues, it also raises the risk of causing resentment among others. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A misunderstanding ‘twixt you and a friend might not be your fault at all, despite what he or she suggests. Talk it out to see at what point the confusion might have started. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Getting into a community operation fulfills the Aquarian’s need to help people. It also can lead to new contacts that might one day help you with a project. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A minor problem could delay the start of a longanticipated trip for two. Use the time to recheck your travel plans. You might find a better way to get where you’re going. BORN THIS WEEK: You are a dedicated romantic who seeks both excitement and stability in your relationships. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
Going Away? Tips To Keep Your Home Safe While You’re On Vacation (NAPS)—Peace of mind is important to just about all homeowners, including when they’re away on a hard-earned vacation. When warm weather arrives, however, crime rates increase, according to a study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Fortunately, you may be able to reduce any vacation time stress by taking five steps to improve security—protect your windows, monitor your doors, secure your AC, make your house a difficult target and stay in the loop about what’s happening at home. How to make it look like someone is home, even when you’re away • Stop your mail. Nothing says “there’s nobody home” like an overstuffed mailbox and a pile of newspapers on the front porch. You can fill out a simple form with the United States Postal Service asking it to hold your mail. Or, perhaps better yet, have a trusted neighbor stop by to pick it up. • Leave dog toys in the front yard. Even if you don’t own a dog, you can give a burglar pause by making him or her think that you do. • Maintain a well-kept yard. Remove tree branches that give easy access to top floor windows and cut back tall shrubs that make it easy for burglars to hide behind. • Add outdoor motion sensor lights to scare away those trying to walk into your yard and peek inside. With smart lighting technology, you can program your lights to come on even when you aren’t home. This feature has an advantage over automated timers because you can turn the lights in your home on or off as you please from anywhere with your Internet-connected device, or set routines through your home automation service, such as ADT. • Integrate your wireless doorbell with your lights for further security benefits. Have the doorbell trigger an inside light to give the illusion that someone is home, since burglars prefer dark areas for stealth. While you’re away, home security can act as your house-sitting service and provide real protection. Choose a security company that has 24/7 monitored protection, such as ADT, which has over 19,000 employees who are always ready to help in case of an emergency. If you do choose to hire a house sitter when you’re away, provide him or her with a unique pin code to disarm your security system. Not only will you be alerted when the system is disarmed, you can deactivate this code once you return. With these steps, you’ll have peace of mind on vacation. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

On May 8, 1973, in South Dakota, armed members of the American Indian Movement surrender to federal authorities, ending their 71-day siege of Wounded Knee, site of the infamous massacre of 300 Sioux by the U.S. 7th Cavalry in 1890. On May 11, 1988, Kim Philby, a former British intelligence officer and double agent for the Soviet Union, dies in Moscow. Philby was perhaps the most famous of a group of British government officials who spied for Russia from the 1930s to the 1950s. On May 7, 1994, Norway's most famous painting, "The Scream" by Edvard Munch, is recovered almost three months after it was stolen from a museum in Oslo. It was recovered undamaged from a hotel about 40 miles away. On May 9, 1926, according to their claims, American polar explorer Richard E. Byrd and pilot Floyd Bennett fly over the North Pole in a triple-engine Fokker monoplane. However, the discovery in 1996 of Byrd’s diary suggests they may have turned back short of the pole because of an oil leak.

I’ve read every complaint about this poor beagle ever since you started writing about him. However, complaining isn’t helping. Have you approached the owner with your sentiments? Have you called the authorities on him? Leaving a dog out in the cold without insulated & heated shelter is against the law and definitely animal abuse. Dogs are pack animals that need companions and love. They have feelings; they are not robots; they freeze in the winter. Offer to adopt the beagle or make so much noise publicly that his owner will willingly give him up. It’s obvious the owner doesn’t care about him. Please, for the dog’s sake, take action. I can’t understand why people like that have pets.

I cannot thank the wonderful woman (Mary from Marion) enough who gave me a ride from Walworth to Penfield when my vehicle was disabled about a week ago. There are still wonderful people in this world! She would not accept anything in It seems that [local town] has found a great money maker in the snow removal ordinance. I was blessed with two violations this winter on [local street]. They charge 40.00 per minute, the whole process of plowing the sidewalks took 2 minutes, and the bill was 80.00! Who makes 40.00 per minute? We shoveled religiously all winter and still got dinged for not shoveling the [local town] sidewalks! Most places use the tax dollars to remove snow from their sidewalks! [Local street] sidewalks were not cleared all winter. I think a petition is in order, and [local town] needs to redo this ordinance! Many street crossings have pedestrian signals that show the words WALK and DON’T WALK or show a WALKING

return. My prayers go out to her, and I hope the dear Lord recognizes her thoughtfulness and kindness. Our family of 5 visited Wolschlegel’s Maple Farm in Naples at the end of March and what a wonderful time we had!!! A beautiful hiking tour through their woods and operation followed by pancakes with fresh syrup. Beautiful views, and a cute “maple products” store. The kicker was as my husband and I scrambled around to get our 3 young kids some food, an employee was quick to give us a hand and kept checking back to make sure we were all set!! Wonderful
PERSON in white and a RAISED HAND in orange. Pedestrian signals direct pedestrians while crossing the street. The WALK or WALKING PERSON appears when it is legal to START crossing. When the DON’T WALK or RAISED HAND appears, you may not start across the street. The FLASHING signal means you should not BEGIN to cross because you may not have enough time to make it to the other side before vehicles start moving across your path. If the flashing starts after you have already started to cross, (which in my case going slow w/a 5-year-old with her bike and training wheels, it started to flash midway) you may finish crossing the street. The pedestrian has the right of way! Patience is a virtue.

people and a wonderful time! We are very lucky to live in such a beautiful place, we should not take it for granted but should take care of it. I find it so sad to look out the car window and see so much trash along the roadside. If everyone would pitch in and clean up the ditches in front of their house, and people would stop tossing garbage out the window, we could really make a huge difference in the aesthetic of our scenic landscape. Make everyday Earth day and take care of our beautiful world!
Every time you have a plumber, electrician, hvac, or repairman do work for you and you pay them with cash, you cannot be certain that they pay any tax on that money. If they do not, they are evading taxes and costing all of us in the long run. If the average citizen would only pay taxes on let’s say half of your income just think how much more take home pay you would have. We know we are all overtaxed, but part of the reason is that there are those among us that do not pay their fair tax, and the rest of us make up for them.

Retired Pittsford Teacher, John Strazzabosco, Takes a New Look at Poverty By Amanda Dudek
T
hirteen years ago, retired Pittsford teacher, John Strazzabosco, needed to understand the issue of poverty that plagued people he met while doing volunteer work. His research and experiences during the years that followed led him to shocking conclusions. In his newly published book, Ninety Feet Under-What poverty does to people, Strazzabosco shares his findings, hoping to spread awareness and inspire solutions. John Strazzabosco has long had an interest in helping others. “I was in the middle of the 4th year of my engineering degree at the University of Cincinnati when I realized this was not what I wanted to do,” said John. “After two years in the US Army as a hospital lab technician, I decided to use my math background to become a teacher.” He then taught in Pittsford for the following 33 years, even chairing his department a couple of times. Long interested in social justice, John recalled, “I realized I did not truly understand poverty and how it works.” Five years after he retired in 2001, Strazzabosco felt driven to understand the complexities of poverty. “I did volunteer work with people in poverty so that I could learn more about it,” John shared. “I became involved with the Rochester Children’s Zone Effort, and the church I attended started partnering with a Rochester church, as well.” These eye-opening experiences sparked in him a determination to end the poverty crisis. “When I saw what the kids went through, I had to know why,” John recalled. “My wife, Jeanne, and I have been involved ever since.” Jeanne runs a program called Kicks for Campers which hosts a Kickball Tournament to raise money for kids to go to Camp Cory on Keuka Lake. For Strazzabosco, those experiences led him in another direction. “I shared with people in our church about poverty,” John explained. “Sister Janet Korn, who helped me develop my presentation, asked if I would use it to help train mentors as a part of an Action for a Better Community self-sufficiency program. I agreed, also working with Focus Plus.” When asked to make a presentation for a training arose at the Hillside Crestwood Center, he jumped at the opportunity. “That was really the beginning for me,” John shared. “All kinds of opportunities have started popping up. I have since presented programs for Brighton, Webster-Schroeder and the Pittsford Teacher Center to name a few.” “Sadly, many people still think about poverty in terms of stereotypes and judgments,” said John. “Believing that people in poverty are lazy, do not want to get a job and want to live on welfare. However, the people I’ve worked with are typically anything but lazy, and whether they receive welfare or not, they are also often working 1-2 jobs, which do not pay enough.”

“Over the years, I have identified 90 impacts that poverty has on people,” John explained. “Most of these are experienced at one time or another, sometimes all at once. They have these 90 impacts assaulting them all the time. This is true for situational poverty, and much more so for generational poverty.” “In poverty, you might feel guilt and shame,” John elaborated. “It starts deteriorating your mind and your body…and it starts early,” he added, suggesting poverty is now being found to affect unborn children. “Poverty’s assaults on children can be silent,” John continued. “As an infant, you experience attachment through eye gaze, touch, and tones of voice. If the infant’s parents are experiencing their own guilt, shame and stress, that affects how they relate to the infant.” “Hunger is another silent assault,” John continued. “Also, poverty is the #1 predictor of child abuse,” he added, careful to emphasize that many parents living in poverty do not abuse their children. “Once I started making a list of these impacts, I didn’t think I was going to be able to stop,” said John. “I wouldn’t be surprised if there were more than the 90 I reported.” “About 6 years ago, I decided to write a book about what I have learned,” shared John. “Now, Ninety Feet Under-What poverty does to people has been published.” Poverty is a serious issue with long-lasting effects on those who experience it. Yet, in spite of the enormity of this issue-traditionally 11-15% of Americans and between 20 and 25% of all children in the USA live in poverty-he believes there is hope. “People must first have their basic needs met, and in poverty, this isn’t happening,” said John. “Food, rent, sickness, shame, cold, hunger, fear: these critical factors are so demanding that attention must be given to them first. Work, education, going to school, career: these might very well get lost when one is totally overwhelmed by making decisions in survival mode.” Strazzabosco hopes he can help others understand poverty’s impacts as well as encourage creative solutions. “I want to see poverty end,” he said, emphasizing that it is up to all of us to find effective solutions before they can be implemented nationally. “First, we must believe we can solve this problem and end poverty together, then we have to find John Stazzabosco at his Book Launch on a way to do it.” June 18, 2018 Please contact John through www.JohnStrazzabosco.com for more information, presentations and book club discussions. BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Failing to get adequate sleep can have an adverse impact on your career. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines.
