The Lakers were undefeated in regular season for the third consecutive year at 17-0-2. GVSU ended the regular season ranked the No. 3 team in the nation and won its fifth consecutive GLIAC title. Following the season, two Lakers were named to all-american teams and forward Irie Dennis was named the NSCAA Women's NCAA Division II National Player of the Year. DiIanni was named the 2009 CaptainU Division II Women's Soccer Coach of the Year. In 2008, DiIanni led the Lakers to their second consecutive undefeated regular season with a 21-0 overall record. After leading his 2007 squad to a perfect 17-0-0 regular season record and a school-record 21-1-1 overall record, DiIanni was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year. He led the Lakers to their second trip to the NCAA Final Four in as many years. GVSU was ranked No. 1 overall for nine consecutive weeks in 2007. The Lakers claimed their third straight GLIAC title and second straight Great Lakes Regional Title, as well as the inaugural GLIAC Tournament title. In 2006, DiIanni improved upon his previous success at Grand Valley State. Once again, the Lakers had a school-best year, finishing with a record of 19-2-1. GVSU advanced all the way to the school's first NCAA Division II National Championship game before losing 1-0, in overtime, to Metro State. Then-sophomore Katy Tafler set a school record, notching 33 goals and 73 points on the year, breaking her own records of 25 goals and 58 points set in 2005. Tafler also placed first in the nation in Division II, recording 3.32 points per contest. For his accomplishments, DiIanni was named the NSCAA/Adidas Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year. 2011 REvIEW
Grand Valley State claimed its seventh straight Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) crown en route to just missing its third straight NCAA Division II National Championship. GVSU fell to eventual champions Saint Rose, 2-1, in the championship match. The Lakers recorded another impressive overall record with a mark of 20-1-4 and an undefeated season (15-0-0) in GLIAC play. The 2011 squad had 16 shutouts and held opponents to just 10 goals on the year. Grand Valley State tallied a goal in all but one game and had 11 studentathletes find the back of the net. With a 10-0 mark at home, GVSU extended its winning streak at the GVSU Soccer Field to 26 straight games and its unbeaten stretch to 37 contests at home. Junior ashley botts led the team, tallying 20 goals and 11 assists on the year, earning GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year as well as Daktronics and NSCAA All-American first team honors. The forward also excelled in the classroom and was named the Capital One Academic All-American of the Year presented by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). She now is now third in the GVSU record book with 122 total career points, coming from 49 goals and 24 assists. Classmate kayla addIson proved once again to be an offensive threat recording 15 goals and seven assists to move into the fifth spot in career points in the Laker record book. Addison now owns 113 career points on 46 goals and 21 assists. Both Addison and Botts will be battling during their senior season to try to match Mirela Tutundzic in the second spot who owns 184 points (75 goals, 34 assists). Junior MarIa broWn also stepped up on the offensive front, recording 10 goals in her 17 starts. Junior keeper chelsea ParIse recorded 14 solo shutouts and posted a miniscule goals against average of 0.39. Aiding the defensive stronghold were classmate alyssa MIra, the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Year, and All-Conference first team selections seniors kayla klosterMan and MeGan broWn and Daktronics All-Region sophomore kayla kIMble. GVSU saw a total of eight student-athletes earn a spot on the All-GLIAC teams. Addison, Botts, Mira, Megan Brown, Klosterman, Parise and senior erIn MruZ each took a spot on the first team, while Maria Brown earned a second team nod. Eighth-year head coach dave diIannI was named GLIAC Coach of the Year. ing and slipped to 19th by the third week of the season despite owning a 3-0-2 mark. Grand Valley quickly turned its season around winning its next 17 games, blanking 10 opponents and outscoring foes 53-5. Parise boasted a shutout streak of 1,003 minutes and 26 seconds to rank in the top 10 in NCAA Division II annals. GVSU was also able to make a mark in the Laker single-season record book by tallying 10 consecutive shutouts in the month of October, which is one better than the nine-game shutout streak from 2008. The streak boosted the Lakers into the No. 1 national spot heading into the NCAA tournament. Grand Valley State captured the 2011 regular season GLIAC title and as the No. 1 seed, the Lakers received a bye in the first round and hosted the GLIAC Championship. The Lakers sailed through the tournament defeating both Tiffin and Ashland, 2-0. Earning the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region, GVSU advanced to the regional finals, defeating Wisconsin-Parkside 3-0 on Nov. 13. Just four days later against Northern Kentucky, a failed clear found the feet of senior JessIca trost, who fired what would be the game-winning goal into the upper left corner of the net in the 80th minute. The Lakers tacked on one more goal at the 84:36 mark when Botts found Addison on the back post for a 3-1 victory and its third straight NCAA Quarterfinal appearance. One game separated GVSU from the Final Four and the game was a struggle for the Lakers. Tallying only one official shot during regulation was junior Maria

Brown when her ball hit off the crossbar. Mines had two shots on goal, which Parise knocked over the crossbar both times. After 110 minutes, No. 1 GVSU was able to successfully advance, defeating No. 8 Colorado School of Mines, 4-2 in the shootout. In the shootout, the Orediggers missed their first shot as it careened off the post and went wide. Addison connected on her shot to give the Lakers a 1-0 advantage. The Colorado School of Mines’ Kelsey Neal then landed her attempt before sophomore Kayla Kimble pushed her shot into the lower right corner for a 2-1 lead. Oredigger Anna Evans then missed her shot as it hit the post before freshman charlIe socIa connected for a 3-1 advantage. A successful kick from CSM forced the next shot as a must-make shot to end the shootout. Mruz had no problem making her shot as it sailed past the keeper’s reach to advance the Lakers to their third straight NCAA Semifinal game. A showdown with Chico State in Pensacola, Fla., ensued in the Final Four. Grand Valley State scored just 53 seconds into the game as Maria Brown found the back of the net to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. Mruz connected with Botts, who found Brown waiting on the right side of the box just in time to head it in. GVSU held onto the lead for most of the game, but a short defensive breakdown allowed Chico State to tie it up in the 85th minute. The teams battled through overtime, but it would be the second straight shootout for the Lakers. Similar to the previous game, Addison and Socia connected on their shots, while Parise made two great stops to keep the advantage. A save on the next GVSU kick and a Chico State make evened it at 2-2. On each team’s final attempt, Botts converted her shot and Parise made a diving save to gives the Lakers a chance at its third consecutive National Championship. Saint Rose, who had been knocked out by GVSU in the 2009 NCAA Semifinals, was waiting for the Lakers. Two second-half tallies by the Knights snapped Grand Valley State’s 42-game winning streak. Botts tallied a goal in the 33rd minute when she picked up a failed clear and fired it from the penalty kick area into the net. GVSU held onto its lead through the half, but Saint Rose opened the second stanza, putting heavy pressure on the Lakers’ side of the field. It paid off with a goal in the 48th minute to tie the game. Saint Rose would score less than 10 minutes later to go ahead 2-1 and remain there for its first-ever national championship. Botts, Addison and Klosterman represented GVSU on the All-Tournament Team. Despite just missing out
on their third straight national title, the Lakers were well represented on numerous regional and national teams as well. Seven student-athletes were named to the Daktronics Inc. All-Midwest Region teams. Addison, Botts, Megan Brown, Mira, Mruz and Parise earned first team nods, while Kimble was placed on the second team. Advancing to the Daktronics All-America teams, Botts and Brown garnered first team plaudits, while Addison, Mruz and Parise were placed on the second team. Mira picked up her first All-America honor with a third team selection. Grand Valley State also had six athletes chosen to the NSCAA Midwest Region team with three advancing to the All-America teams. Addison, Botts, Megan Brown, Mira, Mruz and Parise were selected to the Midwest Region team. Earning All-American honors, Botts and Parise were placed on the first team, while Mruz earned second team plaudits. Botts and Parise were honored for their performance on the field as well as in the classroom each player earning a spot on the Capital One Academic All-District IV teams. Botts was voted onto the Academic All-American first team and earned the GLIAC Commissioner’s Award as well. DiIanni improved his career record to 177-16-14 in nine years at GVSU with an .889 winning percentage to put him second among active Division II coaches. After the season concluded, assistant coach Erica Demers was promoted to Associate Head Coach after eight successful seasons with the Lakers. GVSU also added Shay Mannino to its staff to replace Shannon Neely as goalkeeper coach. The Lakers welcome six newcomers to the program to help fill the spots vacated by graduating seniors. The Lakers lost the service of five seniors from the 2011 team-- Megan Brown, Klosterman, Mruz, Trost and lIndsey MarloW each played their final contests in a Laker uniform. The class of 2011 finished its career with an astounding four-year record of 86-3-10, good for a .919 win percentage.

THE GLIAC
Grand Valley State competes in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and NCAA Division II. The GLIAC consists of twelve colleges and universities located in Michigan and Ohio. The GLIAC was founded in 1972. During the two years previous to the GLIAC’s founding, several attempts were made to create a new NCAA College Division conference. In 1971, the Great Lakes Athletic Conference was formed, but plans for the new conference were put on hold and several of the participating schools subsequently withdrew their support. The idea for a new conference did not die, however, and since 1972-73 the GLIAC has been a leader in the advancement and promotion of intercollegiate athletics for men and women. Grand Valley was a charter member of the GLIAC, joining Lake Superior State, Northwood and Saginaw Valley State to form the conference in 1972. Since then, the GLIAC has expanded throughout the Great Lakes Region adding Walsh and Malone in 2012. The GLIAC crowns champions in a total of 19 sports. In addition to women’s soccer, the GLIAC decides titles in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track, wrestling and volleyball. Beginning in 2012-13, the GLIAC will also sponsor women’s lacrosse. The GLIAC awards the President’s Cup every year for excellence in all GLIAC sponsored sports. The Lakers have won this cup for 11 consecutive years: 1998-1999, 1999-2000, 2000-2001, 2001-2002, 2002-2003, 2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09, 2010-11 and 2011-12.

THIS IS GVSU SOCCER
2010 National Champions
THE RISE OF THE LAKERS The Laker soccer program claimed the top prize for the second straight season at the end of 2010. The national championships came just 14 seasons after the program first took the field in 1996. In the last 15 years, GVSU has quickly progressed from a brand new program, to a GLIAC contender, to a playoff caliber team and now a national powerhouse. The back-to-back national titles tell stories of amazing seasons, but it also marks the culmination of hard work and dedication of every player and coach who helped the program reach the next level. From the outside, GVSU looked like it would have trouble replacing All-American players Irie Dennis and Natalja Stanski, but the roster was already filled with underclassmen ready to take their spots. The Lakers continue to reload with talent and won their seventh straight GLIAC Championship, but just missed winning its third National Title.

THIS IS GVSU SOCCER For the fifth straight season, a majority of the student-athletes to earn All-Conference awards were wearing a Laker jersey. GVSU saw eight players earn first or second team awards from the GLIAC, while Alyssa Mira earned Defensive Player of the Year and Ashley Botts was named Offensive Player of the Year. Botts wrapped up her junior year with two All-American first team nods, while being named the Capital One Academic All-American of the Year. Classmate Chelsea Parise and senior Erin Mruz also earned All-American honors from NSCAA. The trio was also named NSCAA Scholar All-Americans.

COACHING The women’s soccer program has been under the leadership of Dave DiIanni since 2003. As the head coach he has led the team to nine consecutive NCAA playoff appearances, which is even more impressive considering he lead the program to it’s first-ever appearance in his first year. DiIanni has brought the program to new heights since his arrival. The first playoff appearance, the first GLIAC championship, the first undefeated season, the first Final Four, and the first national championship have all come during his tenure. DiIanni has also tutored 16 All-Americans and a pair of NSCAA Player of the Year honorees in his nine seasons. In 2006 and 2010, he was named the NSCAA National Coach of the Year and he has been the Regional Coach of the Year two times. DiIanni is also the coach of the 92 ODP age group and is a USSFB licensed coach. Entering the 2012 season, DiIanni has a career record of 177-16-14 (.890) with his winning percentage ranking second among active Division II coaches. Erica Demers has spent the last seven years as the top assistant coach for the soccer team and was named associate head coach in December 2011. In that time, the Lakers have seen their six best goal totals by scoring 75 or more goals in each season, with a high of 92 in 2010. In 2010 the Lakers outscored opponents by a total of 92-5, with four players recording 20 or more points. Demers, who played NCAA Division I soccer for Oakland University, was a two-time Mid-Con first team selection and was named the Mid-Con Player of the Year in 2002.

GVSU is committed to offering its student-athletes an opportunity to participate in some of the best experiences of their lives, while competing in intercollegiate athletics, as well as attending one of the fastest rising universities in the state. In 2008, the Lakers prepared for their upcoming season practicing against top-notch competition in Europe through the preseason. In 2009, the team kicked off the season with two games in Tampa, Fla. This would bookend the season as the playoffs would take them through Denver, Colo. and back to Tampa where they hoisted the trophy to finish the undefeated season. The 2010 season saw the Lakers host three postseason games before traveling to Louisville, Ky. to claim the program’s second NCAA Championship trophy. In 2011, GVSU won back-to-back shootouts to advance to its third straight trip to the Final Four One of the main attributes of a Division II program is to offer “Life in the Balance” to students. GVSU takes pride in offering academic balance along with athletic success. Student-athletes in the soccer program experience the best of every aspect of the college experience and a quality education is no exception. The soccer team has a cumulative GPA of just over 3.1, with 20 members of the team averaging over a 3.0. When you combine the outstanding academic reputation of the school with the program’s winning tradition, it’s easy to see why GVSU is promoted as a “Grand” experience.
EXPERIENCE
EXPERIENCE The balance GVSU’s student-athletes experience doesn’t just include academics and athletics. The Lakers also spend time helping out around the community and serving as role models for younger girls. The team volunteered at the Kent County Humane Society and also spent time at the Ronald McDonald House of Western Michigan which is located in nearby Grand Rapids. The soccer players also took part in GVSU’s Family Fun Day, hosting activities for the children of the campus’ faculty and staff. In the fall of 2009, GVSU hosted two clinics for soccer teams from the Grand Rapids Special Olympics and those teams were able to showcase their talents during halftime of one of the games.

GK Chelsea Parise celebrates after blocking th final shot in the shootout against Chico State i the 2011 NCAA Semifinal shootout.
The GVSU Soccer Field is located on-campus in Allendale. The home field for the Lakers saw one of the biggest college soccer matches in West Michigan when the No. 3 Lakers defeated the No. 1 Tampa Spartans in the first game of the 2008 season. In 2009, the Lakers added a brand new scoreboard behind the south end of the field and completed a locker room under the press box. GVSU now has extra locker rooms, new restrooms and a permanent concession stand at the brand new South Complex. The Lakers hold a strong advantage over their opponents when playing at home. The Lakers had a home unbeaten streak of 43 games that spanned from 2005-08. In 2009, the Lakers began another home streak as they were declared the victors after every home contest through the 2010 season. GVSU hasn’t lost a regular season home game since Sept. 4, 2005. The Lakers boast an astonishing 94-4-3 record at home under coach Dave DiIanni. Having such a strong regular season home record helps the Lakers keep their games in Allendale once the postseason begins. The GVSU soccer field has been host to at least one NCAA playoff game in each of the past seven years. When the season is on the line, the Lakers are often able to play at home in front of friends and family.

FACILITIES In 2008 GVSU opened the Laker Turf Building, which is now known as the Kelly Family Sports Center. The 138,000 square-foot indoor facility has a seating capacity of 800 with a 100 yard sport turf field surrounded by a six-lane 300 meter track. The building is used by the movement science program, intramurals, and athletics teams. Located near the Kelly Family Sports Center there are also six tennis courts, three outdoor basketball courts and a sand area that houses three beach volleyball courts. The Fieldhouse is also home to some of the best facilities around. Inside there is a weightroom that is primarily used by the varsity programs for team workouts. The Recreation Center is connected to the Fieldhouse and is designed to show the university’s commitment to offering recreational services to students. There is a 1/9th of mile indoor track that is raised over the two main floors. The middle floor features more than 60 pieces of cardiovascular equipment, while the lower floor features both free weights and machines. There are also two gyms that are connected to the Rec. Center that house four fullcourt basketball courts.
