DiIanni is only the second head coach in the program's 16-year history. His .886 winning percentage ranks him first among active Division II head coaches. The 2012 Midwest Region Coach of the Year kept plenty of streaks alive during GVSU’s 20-2-3 season. The Lakers won their eighth straight GLIAC title and fifth consecutive conference tournament. Nationally, GVSU spent the entire campaign ranked No. 11 or better in the NSCAA Coaches Poll. A loss in the NCAA Final Four, the team’s fourth appearance in as many years, ended the Lakers’ season. DiIanni led the Lakers to a 20-1-4 record and a runner-up finish at the NCAA National Championship in 2011. Three Lakers earned spots on the NSCAA All-American team, while six were named to the Daktronics All-America teams. Ashley Botts was awarded with the Capital One Academic All-American of the Year for her performance on the field and in the classroom. DiIanni was named the 2011 GLIAC Coach of the Year for leading GVSU to yet another league title. the season with a 22-1 record and a spot in the Midwest Regional Championship, as well as its fourth consecutive GLIAC title. Three Lakers were named to all-american teams following the season. After leading his 2007 squad to a perfect 17-0-0 regular season record and a school-record 21-1-1 overall record, DiIanni was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year. He led the Lakers to their second trip to the NCAA Final Four in as many years. GVSU was ranked No. 1 overall for nine straight weeks in 2007. The Lakers claimed their third consecutive GLIAC title and second straight Great Lakes Regional Title, as well as the inaugural GLIAC Tournament title. In 2006, DiIanni improved upon his previous success at Grand Valley State. Once again, the Lakers had a school-best year, finishing with a record of 19-2-1. GVSU advanced all the way to the school's first NCAA Division II National Championship game before losing 1-0, in overtime, to Metro State. Then-sophomore Katy Tafler set a school record, notching 33 goals and 73 points on the year, breaking her own records of 25 goals and 58 points set in 2005. Tafler also placed first in the nation in Division II, recording 3.32 points per contest. For his accomplishments, DiIanni was named the NSCAA/Adidas Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year. DiIanni guided the Lakers through a year of firsts in 2005, capturing GVSU's first-ever GLIAC and NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships. The 19-3 overall record was, at the time, the best in school history, with the Lakers rolling off 11 consecutive victories in the season. GVSU finished the season ranked eighth in the NSCAA/Adidas national poll. The Lakers' 7-1 GLIAC record helped them claim their first-ever Great Lakes Regional Championship and advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals. GVSU captured the regional title with a 1-0 win over SIU-Edwardsville and a 2-0 win over host Northern Kentucky in the final. The Lakers dropped a 2-0 decision to eventual national champion NebraskaOmaha in the quarterfinals. In 2004, DiIanni's Lakers recorded a 15-5 overall record, while finishing second in GLIAC play with a conference mark of 6-2. GVSU made its second-straight NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championship appearance. The Lakers fell to host Wisconsin-Parkside. In his first season, DiIanni guided the Lakers to a then-school best record of 17-2-2 (.857) in 2003. GVSU recorded its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance as it hosted the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championship. GVSU defeated Wisconsin-Parkside 4-0 in the first game before falling, 4-3, to Northern Kentucky in the championship match. DiIanni joined Grand Valley State after seven years as the head coach of the Jackson Lumen Christi High School women's soccer team. DiIanni also spent three years as an assistant coach at Hillsdale College, where he helped begin the men's and women's soccer programs. During his stint at Hillsdale, the women's team finished fourth in the GLIAC in just their third season. The men's team was also nationally ranked for one week. DiIanni turned in a 100-19-18 overall coaching record while at Lumen Christi helping the Titans advanced to the state finals in 2000, dropping a 1-0 decision to Detroit Country Day. In addition, Lumen Christi made it to the state semifinals three times under DiIanni and to the regional finals twice. DiIanni was a five-time district coach of the year and a four-time regional coach of the year. DiIanni has spent seven years working with the Olympic Development Program in Michigan, training and developing the highest level of soccer in the state. He is presently the head coach of the 97 ODP age group. He is also a USSF B-licensed coach, which is highly recognizable among soccer coaches. DiIanni and his wife, Kristy, have an nine-year old daughter, Karissa, and a five-year old named Kelsey.

2012 REvIEW
2012 Season Review
Grand Valley State claimed its eighth-straight Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) title en route to its fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Final Four. The Lakers were defeated 2-1 by UC San Diego in their semifinal match, which ended the team’s run at a third Division II National Championship in four years. Despite the loss, GVSU still recorded another impressive campaign. The 2012 squad finished with a 20-2-3 overall record and went 11-1-1 in GLIAC play. The Lakers notched 18 shutouts and yielded just 11 goals on the year. Offensively, GVSU scored 78 goals and peppered opposing goalkeepers with 304 shots on net. By posting a 13-0-2 record at home, the Lakers extended their unbeaten streak at the GVSU Soccer Field to 52 games. It is the third longest streak in NCAA history. For the third time in her illustrious career, senior ashley botts led the team in goals (18) and points (41). Botts garnered Daktronics All-American second team and National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) first team honors. The forward also became the first-ever DII athlete to be named NSCAA Scholar Athlete of the Year. She ranks third in school history with 163 points and 67 goals. Her 29 assists check in at seventh all-time in the GVSU record book. Botts also tied a school record with 25 career gamewinning goals. Fellow senior kayla addIson gave the Lakers a formidable one-two punch by piling up 29 points on 12 goals and five assists. Those numbers moved Addison into the fourth spot in career points (142) and goals (58) in the Laker record book. Addison accumulated those totals in 100 games. Only her classmates alyssa MIra and chelsea ParIse played in more contests as a Laker. Freshman midfielder casey McMIllan and senior forward MarIa broWn bolstered Grand Valley State’s attack with nine goals and five assists apiece. In her fourth season as the Lakers’ starting keeper, Parise stifled opponents yet again. She notched 15 solo shutouts and finished with an 0.41 goals against average. Parise allowed just four goals against GLIAC teams and became the sixth consecutive Laker to be named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Year. Her efforts were rewarded with a spot on the Daktronics and NSCAA AllAmerican teams. Spotting Parise in the record books will not be very difficult. She set school records for career wins (84) and games started (101). Her 59 career shutouts and 9001:58 minutes played were NCAA records. GVSU’s backline undoubtedly took plenty of pressure off of Parise. Junior defender kayla kIMble was a member of the NSCAA All-Region second team, while

classmate tayler Ward and sophomore Juane odendaal were All-GLIAC selections. Overall, GVSU placed eight student-athletes on the All-GLIAC teams. Botts, Kimble, Mira, Odendaal, Parise and senior midfielder erIn hIlbert were chosen to the first team, while Addison, Ward and sophomore midfielder charlIe socIa earned spots on the second team. Mira was a Daktronics and NSCAA third team selection as well. Additionally, Botts, Mira and Parise garnered NSCAA Scholar All-American honors. Ninth-year head coach dave diIannI was named Midwest Region Coach of the Year. After bowing out in the 2011 Division II National Championship just nine months earlier, the Lakers found themselves ranked No. 2 in the NSCAA Preseason Poll. Unlike the year before, though, GVSU lived up to its billing right away. A 3-1 victory over No. 3 Armstrong Atlantic in the season-opener helped the Lakers race out to a 6-0-1 start and claim the top spot in Sept. 18’s NSCAA poll. However, a 0-0 tie against Saginaw Valley State hurt GVSU in the eyes of the voters. The Lakers fell to No. 8 the following week with a 7-0-2 record. Three straight shutouts of Malone, Walsh and arch-rival Ferris State put Grand Valley back in the top five. Those wins also helped the Lakers tie a school record with 10 consecutive shutouts. The streak came to an end when GVSU traveled to Findlay six days later. The 3-2 setback at DeHaven Field also halted a run of 32 straight GLIAC games without a

loss. With little time to dwell on defeat, the Lakers bounced back in a big way. GVSU won its final five regular season matches by a combined score of 20-0 to capture the GLIAC title and earn the No. 1 seed in the league tournament. Routs of eighth-seeded Northwood (6-1) and fifthseeded Ferris State (4-0) gave the Lakers a chance to settle their score with Saginaw Valley State. With a sixth straight GLIAC Tournament Championship on the line, GVSU was flawless. The Lakers steamrolled the Cardinals 4-0, with all four goals coming in the first 35 minutes of the match. No team has beaten GVSU in the posteason tournament since its inception in 2007. Boasting an 18-1-2 record and the No. 3 ranking in the NSCAA poll, the Lakers earned the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region of the NCAA tournament. Grand Valley’s regional title defense began in Allendale with a 3-1 come-from-behind victory over Rockhurst. Addison, McMillan and freshman katIe klunder scored the Lakers’ trio of goals in the final 29:49 of the second half. A familiar opponent stood in the way of GVSU advancing to the NCAA Quarterfinals for a seventh time in eight years. Wisconsin-Parkside, fresh off an upset of Quincy in the second round, had been knocked out of the postseason by Grand Valley State in 2010 and 2011. It did not take long for the Lakers to seize control of the match. Junior defender taylor callen delivered a long pass to Hilbert for a perfect header and a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute. Twelve minutes later, Botts converted a penalty kick for an insurance goal. GVSU’s defense kept Wisconsin-Parkside’s offense in check and earned the team’s 18th shutout of the campaign. The 20 triumph also gave the Lakers their sixth consecutive 20-win season. Just two days later, GVSU hosted No. 17 Minnesota State with a trip to the Final Four on the line. The two met back on Sept. 9 in Mankato, Minn. and scrapped to a 0-0 tie. For a second time, 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of extra time failed to determine a winner. The Lakers held a 2-0 lead in the 70th minute, only to watch Minnesota State tie the game with a pair of goals in the final seven minutes of the match. This time, though, a winner had to be declared. Penalty kicks would decide who moved on to the NCAA Semifinals. McMillan, Socia, Botts and freshman kelly caPoccIa all traded goals with their Minnesota State counterparts. After a miss by Nicole Dooher, Callen found the back of the net and sent GVSU to its sixth Final Four since 2006. Awaiting the Lakers in Evans, Ga. was UC San Diego. The only other match between these two took place in
the 2010 national title game, which GVSU won 4-0. Things did not go as well for the Lakers the second time around, though. Several scoring chances in the first half were unsuccessful. UC San Diego made sure to take advantage of GVSU’s shortcomings. A 25-yard blast from Cassie Callahan put the Tritons up 1-0 less than one minute into the second half. UC San Diego struck again in the 61st minute to build a two-goal lead. Botts gave the Lakers hope by scoring at the 80:58 mark, but six more near-misses brought the curtains down on their season. The loss did not hurt GVSU much when it came to postseason awards. Seven Lakers were named to the Daktronics All-Midwest Region team. Parise, who was named the Daktronics Midwest Region Player of the Year, Botts and Mira garnered first team plaudits. The three were also named first, second and third team AllAmericans, respectively. Spots on the All-Midwest Region second team were awarded to Addison, Hilbert, Kimble and Odendaal. Six student-athletes were chosen to the NSCAA Midwest Region team as well. Addison, Botts, Mira and Parise were first team selections. The second team featured Kimble and Hilbert. Additioanlly, Botts was named a first team All-American. Mira and Parise both earned third team nods. Success in the classroom has always been a point of pride for the Lakers, too. Botts and Parise were on the first team of NSCAA Scholar All-Americans, while Mira claimed a spot on the second team. Parise was voted to the Capital One Academic All-America first team as well. DiIanni’s career record improved to a remarkable 197-18-17 in a decade at GVSU. His .886 winning percentage is the best of any active Division II coach. Grand Valley State welcomes nine newcomers to the program to replace seven graduating seniors: Addison, Botts, Brown. Hilbert, Mira, Parise and Molly streeter. The class of 2012 is arguably the most successful class in Laker history. The group compiled an 84-4-13 record over four years, a win percentage of .896, a national runner-up finish and two national titles.

THE GLIAC
Grand Valley State competes in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and NCAA Division II. The GLIAC consists of twelve colleges and universities located in Michigan and Ohio. The GLIAC was founded in 1972. During the two years previous to the GLIAC’s founding, several attempts were made to create a new NCAA College Division conference. In 1971, the Great Lakes Athletic Conference was formed, but plans for the new conference were put on hold and several of the participating schools subsequently withdrew their support. The idea for a new conference did not die, however, and since 1972-73 the GLIAC has been a leader in the advancement and promotion of intercollegiate athletics for men and women. Grand Valley was a charter member of the GLIAC, joining Lake Superior State, Northwood and Saginaw Valley State to form the conference in 1972. Since then, the GLIAC has expanded throughout the Great Lakes Region adding Walsh and Malone in 2012. The GLIAC crowns champions in a total of 19 sports. In addition to women’s soccer, the GLIAC decides titles in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track, wrestling and volleyball. This past year, the GLIAC began sponsoring women’s lacrosse. The GLIAC awards the President’s Cup every year for excellence in all GLIAC sponsored sports. The Lakers have won this cup for 12 consecutive years: 1998-1999, 1999-2000, 2000-2001, 2001-2002, 2002-2003, 2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09, 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13.

Three-time All-American Katy Taer was an oensive threat for GVSU from 2005-08, becoming the only player in GLIAC history and one of 25 Division II players to record at least 40 goals and 40 assists in her career.
Tafler finished her career as a six-time All-American after becoming the only player in GLIAC history and just one of 25 players in Division II history to record at least 40 goals and 40 assists in her career. Following her senior season in 2008, she was a Daktronics, Inc. first team All-American and an NSCAA third team All-American. In the two previous seasons, Tafler was a first team All-American selection for both Daktronics and the NSCAA. She rewrote both the school and conference record books during her four years at GVSU.
