Sixteen Laker Women Named All-American at Nationals The Grand Valley State women’s track and field team came up just nine points short at the 2010 Indoor Track & Field Championships on March 12-13 in Albuquerque, N.M. The Lakers notched 47 points which tied them for second with Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rival Ashland. Lincoln (Mo.) took home the national title with 56 points GVSU topped all women’s teams placing 16 student-athletes with All-American honors, eight of which came from placing in the top-eight in an individual event. The Lakers also received eight All-American honorees in the 4x400-meter relay and the distance medley relay teams. The top-finishers for the Lakers were sophomores Monica Kinney and Chanelle Caldwell. Both took home second place finishes and AllAmerican honors. Kinney crossed the finish line in 4:50.48 in the mile run, while Caldwell ran the 800-meter run in 2:08.87. Also in the 800-meter run, senior Lauren Bergstrom finished seventh at 2:13.22, scoring two points for the Lakers. Kinney, Caldwell, and Bergstrom also earned All-American honors by placing in the top-eight in the relays. In the distance medley relay of Kinney, Kayla Vallar, Bergstrom, and Karie McDonald, the Lakers earned five points, placing

Kelsey Deacon Staff Writer fifth (11:54.02). The 4x400-meter relay team of Caldwell, Vallar, Danielle Fonseca, and Candice Wheat, crossed the finish line sixth with a time of 3:49.28 and scored GVSU three points. Along with Vallar’s two All-American honors, the junior also set a new school record in the 400meter dash. During the preliminarily trails she crossed the finish line with a time of 55.46 seconds, which beat the previous record of 55.55 seconds, which was set in 2002. In the 60-meter hurdles, Wheat collected her second All-American honoree with a fifth place finish. She cleared the hurdles in 8.36 seconds, scoring Grand Valley State four points. Four Lakers placed in the top-eight, earning All-American honors, in the field events. The top-finisher for GVSU was Liz Murphy. The redshirt freshman placed third in the weight throw with a toss of 61’11”, scoring Grand Valley State six points. Sophomore Lauren Buresh set a new GVSU record in the shot put. Buresh’s throw of 47’9.25” was good for seventh place, which beat her previ-

ous record set in 2009 of 46’4.75”. In the high jump, senior Maegan Doyen collected a fourth place finish. Her jump of 5’8.5” earned the Lakers five points. Sophomore Jocelyn Kuksa placed fifth in the pole vault with a vault of 12’6” and four points. Head coach Jerry Baltes was pleased with the performance of his team along with all the work and effort they put in, “We are very proud of our women and the accomplishments of finishing NCAA runner-up for the second straight year,” Baltes commented. “Our kids competed hard and came close to winning it all.” The men’s and women’s track and field teams will now prepare for the 2010 outdoor season, which will begin at the end of March. The Lakers will get another shot at defeating conference rival Ashland and taking the top-spot at the GLIAC Outdoor Championships and the NCAA Outdoor Championships. GLIAC’s will be held at Ferris State on May 5-7, while Nationals will be in Charlotte, N.C. May 27-29. “We will go back to work and prepare ourselves for outdoors,” said Baltes. “We look forward to the outdoor season and making a run at an NCAA Championship.”

Women’s Golf Gears Up for Successful Spring Season The expectations surrounding the Grand Valley State women’s golf team have perhaps never been higher, as the Lakers are preparing to repeat - or even surpass - their most successful finish in school history. In May 2009 at the NCAA Championships in Findlay, Ohio, GVSU finished as the Division II runner-up, placing second behind Nova Southeastern. Four of the top five Laker golfers at last year’s Division II Championship returned this season, which helped set the standard for another productive year. The leadership under secondyear head coach Rebecca Mailloux helped lead Grand Valley State, as GVSU finished first in four of their six fall tournaments and also placed third at another tournament. Grand Valley State took home team titles at the Ferris State Invitational, the Laker Fall Classic (which was hosted at The Meadows), the Bing Beall Classic, and the Zippy Invitational, while finishing third at the Cardinal Classic. It was this combination of five top-three finishes out of six events that helped the Lakers receive their first-ever #1 national ranking, as released in the Golf World/National Golf Coaches Association poll in the Nov. 30 issue of Golf World magazine. GVSU notched two of the 10 first-place

DJ Foster Staff Writer votes for 230 points, outdistancing Nova Southeastern, which garnered four first-place votes and 229 points. Two other Florida schools (Florida Southern and Rollins), along with regional competitor Indianapolis, rounded out the top-five. It was quite an accomplishment for the Lakers, which features just two seniors on the team, Caitlin Bennett and Ashley Smith. The two seniors helped Grand Valley State finish second at the Ashland Desert Invitational in Mesa, Arizona to start the 2010 spring season. Bennett tied for eighth place with a score of 156 (+14), while Smith finished in a tie for 14th place with a twoday total of 158 (+16). Junior Allie Tyler, perhaps the team’s most consistent performer, led GVSU with a 36-hole total of 154 (+12) and sophomore Sarah Hoffman tied for 10th place with a score of 157 (+15), as the Lakers finished just one stroke behind California State Monterey Bay. Hopefully Grand Valley State will make a return trip to Mesa, Arizona, as the Division II National Tournament will be held there in midMay, a week after the regional tournament in

Springfield, Missouri at Drury University. After closing the month of March at the Barry Bucs Invitational in Miami, the Lakers compete three more times before advancing to regionals and the national tournament. GVSU will participate in the Lady Panther Spring Shootout (also held at Drury) on April 10-11 and will travel to Ashland, Ohio for the Ashland Invitational on April 16-17. The Lakers will look to bring home a three-peat of the GLIAC Championship, which takes place on April 24-25 in Big Rapids, Mich. After winning last year’s conference title in Allendale by a whopping 25 strokes, GVSU made it two league championships in a row and the program’s fifth overall since 2001. The Lakers will look to capture the team trophy again before heading off to the NCAA Tournament. Grand Valley State boasts three valuable leaders in upperclassmen Bennett, Smith, and Tyler, but the Lakers have good depth with youngsters Ashley Beard, Hoffman, Danyelle Kauble, Carolyn Schaner, and Marni Weinstein. If any of those five freshmen or sophomores contributes late in the season, the Lakers could very well capture more team championships at the conference, regional, and national levels.

WHO WILL LEAD THE LAKERS IN 2010? The quarterback position is obviously important at any level of football. Pee wee, high school, college and professional teams rely on the QB in so many ways, leadership, running the offense and making plays are all on the checklist, among other qualities, to be a good quarterback. The Grand Valley State football program has been able to produce quality quarterbacks over the years, evidenced by a list that includes Steve Michuta (1978-81), Jim Lynch (1982-84), Guy Schuler (1985-87), Brian Tazic (1989-92), Kwame McKinnon (1994-95), Jeff Fox (1996-98), Curt Anes (1999-2002), Cullen Finnerty (2003-2006) and Brad Iciek (2007-09). Fox, Anes, Finnerty and Iciek combined for eight appearances as Harlon Hill Finalists, including four top three finishes and one Harlon Hill Award winner (Anes-2002) as the DII Player of the Year. “Obviously, the quarterback is an important piece of your football team, but at Grand Valley State that piece of the puzzle is under a great deal of scrutiny because of the success of the past quarterbacks in the program’s history,” said first-year head coach Matt Mitchell. “It is simply amazing that over the last 13 years we have had four starting quarterbacks and all four have been in the running for the Harlon Hill Award,” added Mitchell.

Isiah Grimes Freshman • 6’6” 218 South Haven, Mich. Redshirted in 2009

Tim Nott Editor in Chief The Lakers’ biggest question mark heading into the 2010 season is who will be the starting quarterback. It is a question that Mitchell has heard more than a few times since taking over the reins of the most successful DII football program during the last decade. “It is something that I have been asked a few times,” said Mitchell. “We have a very good list of candidates and that is a great place to start. It is comforting when you look at the group we have competing for the job, however, no one in that group has started a game at Grand Valley State.” Heading into spring drills the list includes seniors Marquel Neasman, Kyle McMahon and Danny Stiefel and freshmen Taylor Copacia, Isiah Grimes and Heath Parling. Neasman has played in a backup role at Grand Valley State, while McMahon started six games at Eastern Michigan. Stiefel was a two-year starter at Saginaw Valley State before leaving the program in 2009. “We are heading into this competition with the mindset of having six players competing for the

job,” said Mitchell. “We have no idea at this point who will be under center versus West Texas A&M, but we do know that we are developing a starting quarterback for the 2010 season. We have an idea of what each player brings to the table in terms of style and talent, but we need to find out who fits best into the position of running our base offense. We ask a lot out of our quarterbacks in terms of pass protection and changing plays to make sure we are in position to be successful, but we also want someone who will play within themselves and realize that they have a lot of weapons to get the job done.” Neasman has completed 34-of-66 passes for 413 yards and two TDs the last two years as a backup to Iciek. Neasman is an athletic quarterback with the ability to throw on the run. He has had the opportunity to see a significant amount of playing time because former head coach Chuck Martin substituted early in games. “Marquel has the advantage of playing in our offense the last three years,” said Mitchell. “He has done a good job of running the offense when he got in games, but he knows being the starting quarterback brings a whole new set of circumstances. I like the leadership approach he has taken and we

Who Will Lead the Lakers in 2010? (continued) know what we will get with Marquel taking the snaps.” McMahon played in 19 games during his career at Eastern Michigan, including six as a starter in 2009. Kyle completed 156-of-278 passes for 1,752 yards and nine TDs during his time with the Eagles. McMahon’s signature game a year ago came against Temple when he completed 25-of-36 passes for 230 yards. “We are excited to see what Kyle can do during spring practice,” said Mitchell. “We are not as familiar with what he can do in our offense, but we knew he was a talented quarterback coming out of high school and he did a nice job when given the chance at Eastern Michigan. Kyle was a leader during our off season conditioning workouts and he was an athletic player with good arm strength when we saw his Eastern Michigan film,” added Mitchell. Stiefel was a two-year starter at Saginaw Valley State before transfering to Grand Valley State last fall. He practiced with the Lakers during the fall, but will need to show his skills during spring practice. “Danny has played a lot of football and we have seen what he can do firsthand, but now he will be

Parling was listed as the number three quarterback as a true freshman, while Copacia and Grimes practiced with the GVSU scout team as freshmen. All three possess the qualities needed to be the starting quarterback at Grand Valley State, but all three will need to impress the coaching staff during spring workouts. “Spring practice will be an important time for our three freshman quarterbacks, but we have been impressed with what we have seen thus far,” said Mitchell. “All three possess a different skill set that will work in our offensive scheme, but being in the middle of the fire is a little different and we need to see how they compete under the stresses of a game situation.” Taking the snaps at Grand Valley State bears a responsibility that few can imagine and with the great quarterbacks of the past like Steve Michuta, Jim Lynch, Jack Hull, Jeff Fox, Curt Anes, Cullen Finnerty and Brad Iciek looking on, the pressure to Offensive coordinator Eric Koehler instructs QB Heath perform and lead the Lakers to a championship can Parling during practice last year. hang heavy. Doug Lipinski is the Associate Athletic Director for Marketing at GVSU

Describe some of your responsibilities as the Director of Marketing for GVSU Athletics. I am responsible for the external operations when it comes to customer relations. I oversee our media rights (radio, TV, internet), marketing, corporate sponsorship program, ticket operation, promotional campaigns and the fan experience. What’s the best part of being the Director of Marketing? The best part of my job is the people. We have some great people at Grand Valley State that understand what it takes to be successful. They are enjoyable to be around and that is a good thing when it comes to working in athletics, especially when there are long days and weekends. I also enjoy the ability to assist in shaping our brand. The opportunity to be creative and create promotional elements that assist in greater brand awareness is a rewarding part of the job. Being the director of marketing for athletics is great because every day is different. There are no normal days. One hour I might be dealing with a Vice President of a Fortune 500 company negotiating a corporate sponsorship and the next hanging signs at the stadium. I tell people I am the thunder stick and bobble head guy. You also played baseball at GVSU. How did that influence your decision to stay with the Athletic Department? Being a student-athlete at Grand Valley was a privilege and gave me the opportunity to compete at a higher level. Those experiences were a great influence on why GVSU is such an attractive place for me and my family. I have a good understanding of what it takes to be successful. I have a great appreciation for the commitment our student-athletes and coaches make for their programs Your department has won 18 NACMA (National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators) awards in the past 4 years. What’s your secret?
