QUESTION & ANSWER
MARK STOESSNER HEAD ATHLETIC TRAINER
-QTell us about your background and how you ended up at Grand Valley State? -AI was the head athletic trainer at Northern Michigan for 13 years, in my first full time job. We moved to Ann Arbor to be closer to family and I worked a variety of sports as an assistant athletic trainer at Michigan for six years. We moved here because I realized I wanted to be a head athletic trainer again, and an opportunity to work at a place like Grand Valley was too much to pass up. -QAs the head athletic trainer, what are your main responsibilities? -AI am the athletic trainer for the football team. In addition to that, I supervise three full time and five graduate assistants in covering the rest of the 20 GVSU varsity sports. I also coordinate physician coverage, help with supervision of athletic training students and a variety of other administrative responsibilities like medical billing and records.
-QWhat is the greatest challenge of being the Head Athletic Trainer of GVSU?
-QWhat sparked your interest in athletics and made you want to pursue this career?
-AOften times the biggest challenge is the time involved in doing a good job, and how it takes away from my time with my family. Also, trying to provide quality health care for 550 student athletes, and combining that with the wants of 13 coaching staffs, organizing schedules and things of that nature.
-ALike a lot of athletic trainers, I was injured in high school, and saw athletic training as a way to continue to be involved in athletics, and be part of an allied medical profession where helping people regain health is one of the main objectives.
-QWhat do you enjoy most about your job? -AI most enjoy seeing a student athlete return to a pre-injury level of participation after an injury. Also, the proximity of Speedway (I have a thing for a frozen coke every now and then) is a plus.
-QWhat have been some of the highlights during your time at GVSU? -AIt seems like all of the sports teams have on the field highlights every year. Recent championships in soccer and track and cross country have been great to see. It is always a highlight to see injured athletes return to play, and Rob Carlisle comes to mind as someone who overcame two significant injuries and was able to get back to nearly normal, but there are many more stories like his as well.
GVSports Monthly Magazine • 3
-QWhat do you enjoy doing outside of your job? -AI like golfing when the weather and work schedule permits. I enjoy coaching my son’s baseball teams as well. We do some camping in the summer, and traveling to visit family.

GOLF Grand Valley State golfers happy to tee it up with the first tee of west michigan By: Dean Holzwarth - Special from the GR Press
Golf has provided Grand Valley State's Marni Weinstein with opportunities that she never could have imagined. It also has served as a learning tool for life beyond the confines of a course. Weinstein, a junior from Farmington Hills, hopes to instill the core values she has developed through the game to her young playing partner Friday afternoon. The First Tee of West Michigan is holding a unique event at The Meadows at Grand Valley State that pairs collegiate golfers with participants from the First Tee program. The event, which includes golfers from GVSU and Calvin College, will begin with a 4:30 p.m. shotgun start. Nineteen First Tee golfers, ages 7-16, will play in an alternate shot format for nine holes. Girls will be paired with GVSU women’s golfers and boys will be paired with Calvin men’s golfers. "This is an awesome way to help underprivileged kids because golf is a great game that teaches you a lot," Weinstein said. "It teaches you to be honest, and how to persevere, and it just teaches you a lot of life lessons that other games don’t teach you. "It’s a good outlet for them, and I want to show them where golf can take them. It could give
them a lot of opportunities that they would not have, like college." The First Tee of West Michigan, which operates from The Highlands Golf Course, was established under the Lake Michigan Junior Golf Association and approved as a chapter in June. It is the official chapter of the leading youth development organization, The First Tee. The First Tee of West Michigan executive director Tyler Smies said the program is in its infancy, but is striving for growth in the upcoming years. It had 50 kids during the summer, and 24 in the fall. "It’s been a good start for us, but we’re looking to impact a lot more kids in the future as we get the ball rolling," he said. "We want to reach out to more schools to get more kids involved in the program." Smies said Friday’s event is another step in the building process. "I had two golf teams that really wanted to be involved, so I was trying to figure out a way to
GVSports Monthly Magazine • 5
utilize their energy and interest and still make it useful for our program," he said. "The thought of pairing the kids with college golfers really stemmed from the fact that we have so many female participants, and I wanted them to really connect with a very good college golfer. Let them see that this is a game played by a lot of women, too, not just men." Calvin junior Ben Kuiper, who was named Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Most Valuable Player in men’s golf earlier this month, is eager to share his knowledge and show them how enjoyable the game can be. "I love working with kids, and it should be a blast," said Kuiper, a former standout at Grand Rapids Christian. "I hope they will have fun and I can get a couple of smiles out of them. This is a chance for these kids to get out and play a game that they normally wouldn’t get to play, and learn a couple of values along the way. "I’m looking forward to hanging out with these kids and having a good time. I play a lot of golf, so it will be easy for me to relate to them."

T HINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT Louie the Laker
I’m the face of GVSU Being the face of GVSU is really great. Everyone knows exactly who I am when I am out on campus and who I am representing. I enjoy being the face of GVSU because I am representing a great school with a great athletics program. I really take pride in that and am glad that I can continue the tradition. GO LAKERS! Community events are great! Helping out at community events is extremely important to me. I love that I can go out to different events and make kids smile. I always aim for a smile out of the kids and people I see. I love when organizations contact me and want me to come to their event. I make sure that I do everything I can to go to everyone’s event and make an appearance in the community. I enjoy going out into the community because I am representing GVSU and I’m honored to do so. I’m a great listener Being the strong silent type has always been easy for me; I stick to nonverbal communication. I think that in the way I move and motivate fans to cheer shows that you don’t have to be loud to get the message across. I believe that my actions say enough to get the Laker fans involved in games and influence the game day atmosphere. Silence is the one characteristic that I have that will never change but can always be used as an advantage to create a great game day environment. The best part of my job is ... I can go to all sporting events. Going to the sporting events is fun because I can make the game day atmosphere come alive. I love seeing the faces on students who are excited that I am there and having a good time. It is fun to interact with the students and get them to cheer the teams on. I especially enjoy the kids that are at the games because they are excited to see me and give me a hug or a high five. One time a little girl told me that she wanted to be me when she grew up. That just made me proud to be a Laker! My main responsibility is ... My biggest job is to get fans to the events and ensure they have a great time there. Whether in the community or on campus, I consider it my responsibility to communicate how great it is to be a Laker! When we are having our big rivalry games I make sure to get out on campus and promote the game for the whole week in order to raise campus awareness. Sometimes I even get out into the community to promote our bigger events. I hope that by having me go out on campus and in the community would raise the awareness of the games.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
LADIES PREPARE FOR THE heart of the 2011-12 basketball schedule By: Doug Witte - executive editor
Early in the basketball season, the women’s team hasn’t taken the easy road to the conference schedule. Head coach Janel Burgess knows her team needs to be fully prepared to fight its way through the heart of the conference schedule in December and January. In order to get to that point, the Lakers faced a strong non-conference schedule throughout November. The team faced Michigan State in East Lansing in an exhibition game to kick off the month. The Lakers then went on the road to face St. Joseph’s (Ind.) and Wisconsin-Parkside. GVSU hosted GLVC foe Urbana to close out November. Just a few weeks into the season, GVSU has already seen the expected production from key players on the team. Preseason all-conference selections Briauna Taylor and Alex Stelfox have both lived up to their reputations thus far. Both players are
averaging double digits in scoring for Burgess’ team. Brittany Taylor has seen her production rise in the young season. She has stepped up on the offensive end, becoming one of the most consistent scorers for Grand Valley, leading the team in that department so far. Along with Stelfox and the Taylor twins, GVSU has seen improved play from Jasmine Padin at the point. Padin has logged heavy minutes creating problems for other teams when the Lakers are on the defensive end of the court. After being young for the past two years, GVSU now has known

commodities entering the conference schedule with plenty of experience. Kara Crawford, Tori Klewicki-McNutt, Lauren Stodola, Breanna Kellogg, and Dani Crandall have all shown flashes of improved play early in the season to show signs of much improved depth for this 2011-12 squad. However, there is still one wild card that remains to be seen. Kellie Watson has seen her first playing time in over a year, as she was redshirted last season. Depite starting the season on limited minutes, Watson led all scorers against WisconsinParkside with 16 points on Nov. 26. Experience will be the key to surviving the grind throughout the next three months with some tough games ahead in the schedule. GVSU is in the midst of finishing it’s three game road trip with one last game at Northwood, after two conference games in Ohio. Defense will be key against Northwood as the team looks to shut down two Preseason All-GLIAC Second Team performers in G Rachel Church and C Savannah Steadman. Church and Steadman accounted for almost onethird of the offensive production last season. The Lakers will have redemption their mind heading into its first game against Northwood since losing to them in the GLIAC Tournament last season. After the three-game road trip, the team will then turn the tables and have a three-game home stand. On Dec. 10 the Lakers will host Rochester College at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. Grand Valley State will head into the holiday season with tough home games against two teams from the Upper Penninsula, Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech. Northern Michigan will come to town on Dec. 18, led by Preseason All-GLIAC Second Team G Hillary Bowling. Standing at 5-10, Bowling averaged 9.3 points last season for the Wildcats. On Dec. 19, Big Monday will bring two of the best teams in the GLIAC together for a game that could determine the leader in the GLIAC North Division. Michigan Tech and Grand Valley State were the
GVSports Monthly Magazine • 8
only two teams in the North Division to have two players named preseason first team all-conference. In the preseason poll, Michigan Tech was picked first in the North, while GVSU was picked to finish second. Emma Veach will also be returning to Allendale for the first time since transferring from GVSU to Michigan Tech. While every conference game counts, there should be some extra motivation on both benches, where the winner could get a step ahead in the conference race. The Lakers will close out the calendar year on Dec. 29-30 when they swing down to the Sunshine State. In Florida, they will take on Florida Southern and Tampa. Both games will provide stiff competition for the visiting Lakers. In the Sunshine State Conference, Tampa and Florida Southern were picked to finish second and third, respectively. Before a long road trip to the U.P. to face Lake Superior State, GVSU will head to SVSU on Jan. 5 when it returns to its first action of the new year. The Fieldhouse Arena will then host the first game of the 2012, when Northwood has its return trip to Allendale on Jan. 11 for one of the few Wednesday night games on the schedule. Just a few days later, on Jan. 14, the Hillsdale Chargers come to town with its high scoring offense which has averaged 76.8 points per game during November. A notoriously difficult road trip looms as the Lakers look to finish January strong. They will travel to Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech for games on Jan. 19 and 21 before facing rival Ferris State in Big Rapids on Jan. 28. During December and January, the Lakers will play 10 road games and just five contests in the friendly confines of the Fieldhouse Arena. In February, the schedule flips a bit in the Lakers favor with five out of seven games slated to be played in Allendale. The difficult schedule ahead will test the Lakers’ mettle as they make their way through the heart of the conference schedule and attempt to climb to the top.
men’s basketball prepares for big games during the midseason stretch
MEN’S BASKETBALL
By: Kyle Schwerin - staff writer
James Thomas started his senior season with a strong effort, scoring 21 points in the home opener.
The Grand Valley State men’s basketball team has gotten off to an exciting start for the 2011-12 season, putting on an offensive display against Michigan-Dearborn while nearly pulling a huge upset against defending national champion and top-ranked Bellarmine. On Nov. 16, the Lakers ran over Michigan-Dearborn 94-51 in the season-opener, led by senior guard James Thomas’ game-high 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting and six rebounds. GVSU then took No. 1 Bellarmine to the bitter end before falling to the Knights by a 70-67 score on Nov. 19. It was the coming out party for junior Josh Anderson who hit three trifectas, all within a 55-second stretch at the end of the first half, who tied a team-high with 14 points in the game. Thomas has been as exciting as usual, leading the Lakers in scor-
ing through the early part of the season. Combined with the emergence of Anderson and the stellar shooting of true freshmen Ryan Sabin and Ben Lanning, GVSU is looking like an intriguing squad to follow for the duration of the season. The schedule for December and January shapes up to be an exciting one for the Lakers as they look to take back control of the GLIAC North division.
The lakers and huskies, who were picked to finish 1-2 in the gliAc north Division, will face each other on Dec. 19 at gVSU. December 1 marks the beginning of conference play for GVSU
when they head on an Ohio roadtrip to take on Ohio Dominican and Tiffin (Dec. 3) before traveling to Midland, Mich. to take on the Northwood Timberwolves (Dec. 7), a team that includes two preseason All-GLIAC Second Team players in junior guards Andrew Joyce and Andrew VanDierenDonck. The Lakers will kick off a three-game homestand on December 10 with a non-conference contest against Rochester College, a team the Lakers hit 15 three-pointers against back in 2006. With one 13-trifecta effort already this season and a team full of shooters, the Lakers look poised to challenge that number a couple more times this season. GVSU has their first home GLIAC contest on December 18 against Northern Michigan and then take on the Huskies of Michigan Tech the next day before taking off 10 days for the holidays. The Huskies were the preseason pick to win the GLIAC North Division and feature preseason All-GLIAC First Team player Ali Haidar. Senior forward Mike Hojnacki is on the preseason Second Team All-GLIAC squad for the Huskies as well. The Wildcats have a preseason First Team All-GLIAC player of their own, as Jared Benson is one of the best big men in the conference. On December 29, the Lakers will travel to Erie, Pa. to participate in the Gannon Porecco Cup, a fourteam tournament that takes place over two days. In the opening game, GVSU will take on Seton Hill on the 29th and then face either former GLIAC member Gannon or future GLIAC member Malone on December 30 in either the championship game or consolation match-up. After the holiday festivities have ended, the Lakers will be back
GVSports Monthly Magazine • 9
at it with a two-game road-trip to Saginaw Valley State (Jan. 5) and Lake Superior State (Jan. 7) to get back in to the conference swing. Against Saginaw Valley State, the Lakers will be facing one of the top guards in the conference in Greg Foster, a First Team preseason AllGLIAC pick. GVSU will be looking to avenge last season’s overtime loss that it had in Sault Ste. Marie, a 6963 decision. They’ll face a tough test in the rival Lakers as they include preseason First Team All-GLIAC guard Kyle Hunt. On January 11 the Lakers will welcome the Timberwolves to Allendale for a GLIAC battle and then await Hillsdale on January 14 in their only match-up of the season with the Chargers. It will be a tall test considering Hillsdale returns two players who are part of the preseason First Team All-GLIAC South squad in seniors Tyler Gerber and Brad Guinane and the team was voted to finish second in the GLIAC South Division in the preseason poll. GVSU will finish out the month of January with a four-game roadtrip, starting with the grueling Upper Peninsula trip to take on Northern Michigan (Jan. 19) and Michigan Tech (Jan. 21). The highlight game of the entire stretch will be the match-up in Big Rapids against Ferris State on January 28. The Lakers and Bulldogs battled to two overtime games last season, each team winning one. Junior guard Breland Hogan gave GVSU a victory in the final game of the regular season last year up in Big Rapids, banking in a jumper as time expired in the extra period to keep the Lakers postseason hopes alive with an 82-80 victory. The Bulldogs return preseason Second Team All-GLIAC player Jerrell Sanders, who suffered a season-ending injury last year. The Lakers will finish up the month with a trip to Cedarville (Ohio) to take on the NAIA foe on January 31.
