GVSU Places Third at Nationals, 13 Named All-American The Grand Valley State women’s track and field team set a program record when it sent 22 studentathletes to compete at the 2010 Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 27-29 in Charlotte, N.C. The Lakers finished third at the meet with 47 points, the highest they have ever finished in an outdoor season, and collected 13 all-american awards. Head coach Jerry Baltes was pleased with the performance from the women’s team and looks forward to next year. “Our women competed very hard in Charlotte to earn their highest finish in school’s history,” Baltes commented. “We took the most women athletes to the meet, we had the most women earn all-american honors and I am very confident we will win a championships in the near future.” The top-finisher for the Lakers was sophomore Monica Kinney. She recorded 13 points for GVSU with a second place finish in the 1500-meter run (4:23.00) and a fourth place finish in the 5000meter run (16:24.67). Senior Candice Wheat and sophomore Chanelle Caldwell also took home two all-america honors. Wheat cleared the 100-meter hurdles in 13.57 seconds for fourth place, while Caldwell claimed a third place finish in the 800meter run (2:06.60). Wheat, Caldwell, Kayla Vallar

Kelsey Deacon Staff Writer and Leiah Hess set a new school record in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:41.81, placing fourth. Senior Danielle Fonseca set a new school record in the preliminaries of the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.56 seconds. In the finals, she earned all-america honors with an eighth place finish (1:00.37). In the field events, Liz Murphy took home a second place finish in the hammer. Her toss of 181’8” recorded eight points for GVSU. Freshman Sam Lockhart earned her first outdoor all-american honors in the discus throw. She finished seventh with a throw of 148’9”. Jocelyn Kuksa earned five points for the Lakers with a fourth place finish in the pole vault (12’6.75”), while senior Maegan Doyen claimed all-america honors with a seventh place finish in the high jump. She cleared a height of 5’7”, scoring two points. On the men’s team, two student-athletes scored points for Grand Valley State, earning all-america honors. Junior Tyler Emmorey broke his previous

school record with a sixth place finish and a time of 8:55.42, scoring three points for the Lakers. Sophomore Matt Armstrong also set a new school record in the shot put. His toss of 59’2.75” placed him second. Grand Valley State also earned two postseason awards from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Assistant coach Joe Lynn was named Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year for his work with the distance crew, while the women’s program was honored with its second straight Division II Women’s Program of the Year Award. The award is based on where the team finishes at the championships of cross country, and indoor and outdoor track and field. Baltes was honored with winning program of the year for the second consecutive year. “This award goes to show how strong our program is during all three seasons. Our student-athletes and coaches have prepared to compete at a high level in cross country, and indoor and outdoor track and field,” Baltes said. “I am very proud and thankful for the hard work, the effort and the great results our student-athletes and coaches have put together over the past two seasons of winning the program of the year award.”

Baseball Ends Season After Strong Postseason Run The Grand Valley State baseball team endured a great deal of adversity during the 2010 season, but head coach Steve Lyon kept the diamond Lakers in tune for another title run. GVSU (37-16) advanced to the GLIAC Tournament for the seventh straight year and was then selected to appear in the NCAA DII National Tournament for the ninth consecutive year. Grand Valley State advanced to the NCAA DII Midwest Regional title game for the seventh time in the last nine years, but dropped a pair of games on the final day to eventual National Champion Southern Indiana. GVSU headed into Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with an 8-3 mark and opened the league ledger with eight straight wins. Grand Valley State used a potent offensive attack that hit .368 and averaged over eight runs per game to build on its winnings ways. Injuries to an already depleted pitching staff forced pitchers that began the year in the bullpen into weekend starters. Senior Jared Knuth turned in a 6-2 record, while sophomore Cory Rademacher finished 5-2. Following a 1-2 mark in the GLIAC Tournament, the Lakers entered the NCAA Midwest Regional as the No. 2 seed. GVSU opened with a 6-3 win over league foe Ashland, followed by a 7-1 victory over Northern Kentucky. GVSU then improved to 3-0 in the six-team tourney with a 6-3

Tim Nott Editor in Chief win over Southern Indiana. The Lakers needed just one win on Sunday to advance to its fifth NCAA DII World Series in the last eight years, but USI claimed 7-3 and 11-4 wins over the Lakers to earn the World Series berth. The Lakers are one of three teams (Central Missouri and Tampa) to appear in every NCAA Tournament since 2002. In addition, GVSU has the fourth-best winning percentage (.724/390-148-1) of all DII schools since 2000. Senior 2B Kyle Gendron, sophomore CF Cody Grice and junior RHP Joe Jablonski reaped postseason honors following the 2010 baseball season. All three GVSU student-athletes were named to the American Baseball Coaches Association and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association AllMidwest Region First-Team. In addition, junior SS Andrew Trepel was named the NCBWA All-Midwest Second-Team. The above mentioned four earned First-Team All-GLIAC honors, while senior 1B Cory Maguire, sophomore 3B Brian Robinson and Rademacher were named to the All-GLIAC Second Team. Sophomore OF Steve Anderson and Knuth earned honorable mention plaudits. Grice hit .455 with 18 doubles, five triples and

six home runs. His 100 hits established a GLIAC and GVSU single-season record. Grice, who tallied a .664 slugging percentage and a .506 on base percentage, drove in 49 runs and scored 66 runs. Cody was also 18-20 in stolen base attempts. Gendron hit .381 with 74 hits and a team-high 50 RBI. Kyle scored 40 runs, hit 15 doubles, seven home runs and two triples. Jablonski turned in an 8-3 record with a team-low 3.33 ERA in 14 appearances and 12 starts. Joe struck out 56 batters and yielded 40 runs, 30 of which were earned, in 81.0 innings pitched. He tossed five complete games and recorded two shutouts on the year. Trepel hit .360 with 68 hits, 36 RBI and 34 runs scored.

Kyle Gendron and the Lakers advanced to the regional championship game.

NEWS IN BRIEF

Where Are They Now?

Joe Lynn Receives Award Grand Valley State's assistant coach Joe Lynn was honored by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Friday (June 4) with the National Men's Assistant Coach of the Year award. Lynn's distance crew accounted for three of the Lakers' entries for the NCAA Championships, two of which were in the steeplechase. Lynn works with both the men’s and women’s teams and did a great job this year.

How you remember him: While Brian Kelly gets national headlines for being the head coach at Notre Dame, he is not the only former GVSU football coach at the helm of an NCAA Division I program. Jeff Quinn was Kelly’s offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator in Allendale for 15 seasons. Quinn oversaw an offensive line that blocked for three Harlon Hill finalists (including Curt Anes who won the award in 2002) and 12 1,000yard rushers. In 2001, the Laker offense averaged an astounding 600.8 yards per game with Lisa Sweany Awarded National Honor The National Association of Collegiate Women the no-huddle spread that was directed by Kelly Athletics Administrators (NACWAA) will and Quinn. honor Grand Valley State Senior Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator, Lisa Sweany, at the Administrator of the Year, Honor and Distinction Awards Banquet. The banquet will take place at the 2010 NACWAA National Convention on Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at The Worthington Renaissance Hotel in Fort Worth, Texas.

What he’s doing now: After helping to bring two national championships to GVSU in 2002 and 2003, Quinn followed Kelly to Central Michigan and Cinicinnati. Quinn served as the interim head coach for the Chippewas near the end of 2006 and led the team to a Motor City Bowl victory. He served in a similar capacity last season for Cincinnati in the Sugar Bowl against the Florida Gators. Now, Quinn will begin his first season as the head coach of the Buffalo Bulls in the Mid-American Conference (MAC).

Keeping the Cup To be named the winner of the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup trophy even once is quite an honor for an athletic department. To be named as back-to-back winners of the prestigious award would be an even greater accomplishment. However, the Grand Valley State athletic department just completed its seventh consecutive school year atop the Learfield Sports scoring system, capturing its seventh straight Directors’ Cup award and adding another crystal trophy to the incredible collection the school has put together in the past few decades. GVSU has collected its seventh Directors’ Cup trophy in a row after finishing second in both 2001-02 and 2002-03, putting together quite a nine-year stretch that surely looks to continue in the future. To better understand how prominent the award is, one needs to know the history and scoring system behind the Directors’ Cup. Starting during the 1993-94 school year, the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the USA Today developed the Directors’ Cup program to honor the institution that scores the most points throughout the year in a pre-determined number of sports for both men and women. During the inaugural stages, the Directors’ Cup program was solely for Division I institutions, in which point totals from 20 sports (10 men’s, 10 women’s) would be counted toward the school’s cumulative total. In 1995-96, Division II, III, and the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) were included in the Directors’ Cup standings for the very first time. The number of sports that could score points was different for each of the newest branches, as Division II could record points for 14 sports (seven men’s, seven women’s), Division III was allowed 18 sports (nine men’s, nine women’s) and NAIA was permitted a dozen sports (six men’s, six women’s). Teams advancing to postseason play are eligible to score points for their institution, with a national championship (or first place finish) giving the school 100 points toward its final tally. Depending on the number of teams competing in a sport at the national level and barring any ties, second place would earn a program 90 points, third place captures 85 points, fourth place garners 80 points, and so on. At the end of the school year, for Division II (for example), the top seven point totals in both men’s and women’s sports are counted to-

DJ Foster Staff Writer wards the institution’s year-end total. Any overload of points from teams not in the top seven are not counted towards the final standings. With that process now understood, it is easier to dive into the numbers and see how Grand Valley State has sat atop the Division II Directors’ Cup standings for seven consecutive years. For the past three years, the Lakers have eclipsed the 1,000-point mark and GVSU is the only Division II institution to reach that figure in the 15-year history of the award. No school east of Colorado had won the Directors’ Cup trophy before Grand Valley State captured the title in 2003-04 for the first time. That ended a four-year stretch from UC-Davis, as the Aggies won six times overall before moving to Division I. Aside from GVSU’s record-setting seven Directors’ Cup trophies and UC-Davis’ six titles, the only schools to win the award are Cal State Bakersfield and Adams State (Colorado). The Laker athletic department recorded seven top-five finishes and 10 different sports placed in the top-10 as it cruised to this year’s title. Not only did Grand Valley State use a balanced performance of men’s and women’s sports, but the

Lakers had terrific finishes in each of the three athletic seasons: fall, winter, and spring. During the fall 2009 season alone, GVSU recorded 380 points which, for some schools, is a strong point total for the entire year. The Lakers finished in the top-10 in four of the five NCAA championships in which they qualified, including four finishes in the top-five. Head coach Dave DiIanni and the women’s soccer team recorded their first-ever undefeated season and captured the first national championship in program history with a 1-0 win over CSU Dominguez Hills in December, giving Grand Valley State 100 points to add to its total. Exactly one week later, the Laker football team dropped a heart-breaking 30-23 loss in the national championship game to Northwest Missouri State, but capped off a tremendous season with a runner-up finish and another 90 points to the total. The women’s cross country team also earned 90 points in placing second at the national meet, falling to Adams State by just eight points. On the men’s side, the GVSU cross country team took home a fifth-place finish in late November and earned 75 points, while the volleyball team advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 10th straight season and garnered 25 points. After the fall season, Grand Valley State held a strong 141-

Keeping the Cup (continued) point lead over second-place Minnesota Duluth and the Lakers would only widen that margin in the coming months. In the winter sports season, the Lakers racked up a season-high total of 330.50 points, as five programs finished in the top-30 nationally. Both swimming and diving teams recorded their best finishes in school history at the national championships in mid-March, as the men’s team notched a fourth-place trophy, while the women’s team claimed an eighth-place finish. It was a strong boost in the point total, as the men earned 80 points while the women received 70.5 points. The women’s indoor track and field team placed second at the national competition, finishing just nine points behind Lincoln (Mo.) for the team title. It was GVSU’s top-ever placement at the NCAA meet. That gave Grand Valley State 87.5 points towards its total, while the men’s indoor track and field team finished 29th, earning 42.5 points. Just one day later, the Laker men’s basketball team dropped a 78-76 overtime classic to Saint Joseph’s in the Midwest Regional semifinals, giving GVSU a 17th place showing and 50 points to its winter season total. Capping off the school year came a spring season in which the Lakers picked up three more top-10 finishes and pushed their point total over the

1,000-point mark. The women’s outdoor track and field team had eight athletes and the 4x400 meter relay team score points at the national meet, as GVSU finished in third place, its highest finish ever. Just outside the top-five was the women’s golf team, which notched a sixth-place total at the NCAA Women’s Golf Championships in Mesa, Arizona. During the year, Grand Valley State earned its first number one national ranking in women’s golf and finished the year strong with its finish in sixth place. Another team that advanced further than it had in school history was the women’s tennis team, which placed ninth at the national championships in Orlando, Florida in May. The Lakers moved onto the Sweet Sixteen and added 64 points to the Directors’ Cup standings for GVSU. On the men’s side, the outdoor track and field team placed 23rd at nationals, while setting a pair of school records in that meet. The men’s golf team notched its second straight GLIAC title in October and advanced to the Midwest/South Central Regional Tournament in May, scoring 23 points towards Grand Valley State’s total. Finishing off the athletic calendar year was the Laker baseball team, which advanced to the Midwest Regional Tournament for the ninth straight year, becoming just the third team in Division II to have

competed in the NCAA Tournament every year since 2002. GVSU fell in the regional championship game to eventual national champion, Southern Indiana, as the Lakers participated in the regional title game for the seventh time in the past nine seasons. With its seventh straight Directors’ Cup trophy, Grand Valley State joins three other schools in the complete domination of the award. In Division I, Stanford appears to have clinched its 16th straight Directors’ Cup trophy this year, giving the Cardinal the trophy in 16 of the 17 years of the awards’ existence. Williams, the Division III winner for the past 11 years, is well on its way to making it a dozen years in a row that the Massachusetts-based school has won the Directors’ Cup award. In the NAIA, Azusa Pacific (California) is close to locking up its sixth straight title, as the Cougars have dominated the national field over the past five years. The GVSU athletic department, Laker student-athletes, and coaches will receive the Directors’ Cup trophy in a halftime ceremony at the 2010 football home opener against West Texas A&M on September 2nd.
