Grand Valley State competes in the Great lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GlIAC) and NCAA Division II. The GlIAC consists of twelve colleges and universities located in michigan and ohio. The GlIAC was founded in 1972. During the two years previous to the GlIAC’s founding, several attempts were made to create a new NCAA College Division conference. In 1971, the Great lakes Athletic Conference was formed, but plans for the new conference were put on hold and several of the participating schools subsequently withdrew their support. The idea for a new conference did not die, however, and since 1972-73 the GlIAC has been a leader in the advancement and promotion of intercollegiate athletics for men and women. Grand Valley was a charter member of the GlIAC, joining lake Superior State, Northwood and Saginaw Valley State to form the conference in 1972. Since then, the GlIAC has expanded throughout the Great lakes region. The GlIAC crowns champions in a total of 19 sports. In addition to women’s soccer, the GlIAC decides titles in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. The GlIAC awards the President’s Cup every year for excellence in all GlIAC sponsored sports. The lakers have won this cup for 11 consecutive years: 1998-1999, 1999-2000, 20002001, 2001-2002, 2002-2003, 200304, 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09.

THIS IS GVSU SOCCER

2009 National Champions

THE RISE OF THE LAKERS The Laker soccer program claimed the top prize at the end of the 2009 season. The national championship came just 14 seasons after the program took the field for the first time in 1996. In those 14 years GVSU has quickly progressed from a brand new program, to a GLIAC contender, to a playoff caliber team, and now into a national powerhouse. The championship trophy tells a story about the 2009 season, but it also marks the culmination of the hard work and dedication of every player and coach who helped the program reach the next level. From the outside of the program, GVSU was supposed to be in a rebuilding year after Katy Tafler, Ashley Elsass, and Kristina Nasturizo graduated after wreaking havoc on the GLIAC for four years. Instead, the Lakers simply reloaded for the 2009 season and claimed their fifth consecutive GLIAC Championship and third straight undefeated season on the way to the national championship.

THIS IS GVSU SOCCER

THIS IS GVSU SOCCER For the third straight season, a majority of the studentathletes to earn all-conference awards were wearing Laker jerseys. GVSU saw all eleven starters earn first or second team awards from the GLIAC. Along with the All-GLIAC teams, Irie Dennis, Ashley Botts, and Megan Brown swept the individual player awards. Natalja Stanski wrapped up her senior year earning national awards. She was named an academic allamerican by Daktronics, while also being named ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American of the Year. Stanski was also awarded the NCAA Elite 88 award at the national championship site.

Irie Dennis capped off her career with her fair share of awards as well. Dennis was named the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year and was named to the All-region first-team. She also earned top honors from the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) being named the NSCAA National Player of the Year.

COACHING The women’s soccer program has been under the leadership of Dave DiIanni since 2003. As the head coach he has led the team to seven consecutive NCAA playoff appearances, which is even more impressive considering he lead the program to it’s first-ever appearance in his first year. DiIanni has brought the program to new heights since his arrival. The first playoff appearance, the first GLIAC championship, the first undefeated season, the first final four, and the first national championship have all come during his tenure. He has also tutored seven all-americans in his seven years. In 2006 he was named the NSCAA National Coach of the Year and he has been the regional coach of the year two times. DiIanni is also the coach of the 89 ODP age group and is a USSF-B licensed coach. Entering the 2010 season, DiIanni has a career record of 135-14-8 (.885). Erica Demers has spent the last five years as the top assistant coach for the soccer team. In that time, the Lakers have seen their five best goal totals by scoring 75 or more goals in each season, with a high of 88 in both 2007 and 2009. In 2009 the Lakers outscored opponents by a total of 8812, with six players recording 20 or more points. Demers, who played NCAA Division I soccer for Oakland University, was a two-time Mid-Con first team selection and was named the MidCon Player of the Year in 2002.

GVSU is committed to offering its student-athletes an opportunity to participate in some of the best experiences of their lives, while competing in intercollegiate athletics, as well as attending one of the fastest rising universities in the state. In 2008, the Lakers prepared for the upcoming season practicing against top-notch competition in Europe through the preseason. In 2009, the team kicked off the season with two games in Tampa, Fla. This would bookend the season as the playoffs would take them through Denver, Colo. and back to Tampa where they hoisted the trophy to finish the undefeated season. One of the main attributes of a Division II program is to offer “Life in the Balance” to students. GVSU takes pride in offering academic balance along with athletic success. Student-athletes in the soccer program experience the best of every aspect of the college experience and a quality education is no exception. The soccer team has a cumulative GPA of just over 3.1, with 18 members of the team averaging over a 3.0. When you combine the outstanding academic reputation of the school with the program’s winning tradition, it’s easy to see why GVSU is promoted as a “Grand” experience.

EXPERIENCE

EXPERIENCE The balance GVSU’s student-athletes experience doesn’t just include academics and athletics. The Lakers also spend time helping out around the community and serving as role models for younger girls. In January, the team volunteered to help out at the Kent County Humane Society and also spent time at the Ronald McDonald House of Western Michigan which is located in nearby Grand Rapids. The soccer players also took part in the National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) at GVSU where they teamed up with some of Grand Valley’s other women’s sports to host over 300 middle school girls to help them learn some basic soccer skills as they rotated through different activity stations and had opportunties to interact with the players. In the fall of 2009, GVSU hosted two clinics for soccer teams from the Grand Rapids Special Olympics and those teams were able to showcase their talents during halftime of one of the games.

GVSU hosted over 300 girls on NGWSD in February

LOCATION GVSU’s main campus is located in Allendale, Mich. which is located about 20 minutes from either Grand Rapids or Grand Haven. Grand Valley also has a downtown campus which is located in the second largest metropolitan city in the state, Grand Rapids. Grand Haven is home to the Coast Guard Festival and is a also well-known attraction because of the beach on beautiful Lake Michigan. Grand Rapids hosts the Celebration on the Grand every fall and is a city full of various events and attractions throughout the year. Grand Valley State also has a great Student Life department which creates events and brings in different musical, comedy, and other acts from around the nation for GVSU students to enjoy. Student Life at GVSU also offers community service opportunties as well as leadership programs.

The GVSU Soccer Field is located on-campus in Allendale. The home field for the Lakers saw one of the biggest college soccer matches in West Michigan when the #3 Lakers defeated the #1 Tampa Spartans in the first game of the 2008 season. In 2009, the Lakers added a brand new scoreboard behind the south end of the field and completed a locker room under the press box. The Lakers hold a strong advantage over their opponents when playing at home. The Lakers had a home unbeaten streak of 43 games that spanned from 2005-08. In 2009, the Lakers began another home streak as they were declared the victors after every home contest. GVSU hasn’t lost a regular season home game since Sept. 4, 2005. Having such a strong regular season home record helps the Lakers keep their games in Allendale once the postseason begins. The GVSU soccer field has been host to at least one NCAA playoff game in each of the past five years. That means when the season is on the line, the Lakers are often able to play at home in front of friends and family.

HOME FIELD

FACILITIES In 2008 GVSU opened the Laker Turf Building. The 138,000 square-foot indoor facility has a seating capacity of 800 with a 100 yard sport turf field surrounded by a six-lane 300 meter track. The building is used by the movement science program, intramurals, and athletics teams. Located near the Laker Turf Building there are also six tennis courts and three outdoor basketball courts that were expanded during construction. There was also a sand area added where there are three beach volleyball courts. The Fieldhouse is also home to some of the best facilities around. Inside there is a weightroom that is primarily used by the varsity programs for team workouts. The Recreation Center is connected to the Fieldhouse and is designed to show the university’s commitment to offering recreational services to students. There is a 1/9th of mile indoor track that is raised over the two main floors. The middle floor features over 60 pieces of cardiovasular equipment, while the lower floor features both free weights and machines. There are also two gyms that are connected to the Rec. Center that house four full-court basketball courts.
