FROM THE BAND MANAGER’S DESK There was council meeting on December 1, 2010 attended by Terry Walkus, Victor Walkus, Crystal Walkus, Eddie Charlie, Ernie Henderson and Robert Walkus. Absent were Paddy Walkus (away for meetings in Vancouver) and Gary Walkus (working). Presentations were given by Rick Coon and John Henderson. There was also a presentation given by Sandra Charlie and Ravena Coon regarding the annual disbursements for this fiscal year. Details to follow. A Band Council Resolution was passed to request patient travel dollars for our off reserve people. This should assist greatly in servicing our off reserve people. If approved, our Patient Travel Department will be able to process travel for individuals living off reserve. The office will be shut down from December 17, 2010 to January 4 for Christmas Holidays. Our school principal resigned so we will be posting for a new principal to finish out the school year. Winter cleanup is being targeted for January 10, 2011. Hopefully the whole community can get involved and contribute to the cleanup. Bins will be ordered. Please get involved and help the community with this event. I’m excited to have our website up and running within a week. Check it out and give us some feedback as to the content and whether or not it’s easy to find your way around. We had a workshop last Friday to try and develop a strategy with the provincial and federal governments and the Federal First Nations Organizations for renovations and training for young adults for our community. This will be a comprehensive plan with real targeted results. I will keep you informed, and you can see pictures in this newsletter. Please drive safe this winter season, I noticed cars slipping and sliding on our roads and this can be very dangerous with children walking on the slippery surface too!! Have a good weekend and best wishes for the holiday season!!

ELDERS’ UPDATE To our fellow community members: As you all know, there was an Elders’ Meeting held Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010. One of the main issues discussed was the the use and misuse of the Elders’ Centre. The Elders feel very strongly that Silena needs to continue enforcing the policy that we have come up with. There are many reasons why the Elders came up with this policy, and the building is very well maintained. Silena is the ONLY ONE authorized to unlock the building for anyone using it. She MUST be paid the clean-up fee for every use. The Elders will NOT tolerate anyone willing to break our rules for our building. It has been made clear that if this ever happens again, those people’s names will be made public and they will face a penalty. We Elders have worked very hard for our building and are very proud of having a place to call THE ELDERS’ CENTRE. It is kept clean and presentable. We advise you all to understand the Elders’ Building Policy and have respect for the Elders’ wishes. It is only Silena’s job to enforce them. We would not be able to replace the building if it was damaged. Thanks you all very much for your respect and understanding.
Silena George, Elders’ Coordinator

ELDERS’ CENTRE RENTAL & CATERING POLICY This policy has been passed through at an Elders’ meeting and was agreed upon in a vote in June of 2010.
Please book the building during office hours with Silena George, Elders’ Coordinator. Office hours are 8:00 am to 4:00 pm (with a lunchbreak from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm). There will be a clean-up fee added to all rentals as our Elders clean their building themselves, as they choose to do so themselves. This building is for the Elders to take pride in what they have for their meetings and what not. So please treat this building with the utmost respect as you would an Elders’ house.
Rates are as follows: Meeting Room, Half-day Meeting Room, Full Day Meeting Room, Hourly Clean-up Fee Office Space, Monthly Catering
- $50.00 - $100.00 - $20.00 - $40.00 - $200.00 (does not incl. janitorial service) - $15.00 per plate (not incl. groceries)
Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns with this updated policy. We are looking at the concerns of the Elders when we reinforce these matters. Thank you so much for your understanding and cooperation. This policy is in effect immediately. Sincerely, The Gwa’ala-’Nakwaxda’xw Elders Silena George, Elders’ Coordinator

TREATY UPDATE: A LOOK AT OUR PAST
This well known photograph of the village of Ba’as at Blunden Harbour was taken in 1901 by Charles F. Newcombe. According to Newcombe’s notes, one of the figures in the photograph represents “Tukoo Schannah” who is depicted with upraised hand that probably held a club or hammer to show his superiority. The other is his friend “Stlichoot Schnochway” who with raised finger is proclaiming the superior strength of Tukoo Schannah. The carved figures on the Boardwalk were later sold to Frederick Landsberg who owned a “Curio Shop” in Victoria. In 1905 Newcombe purchased two of the figures from Landsberg and sent them to the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.

LEGEND OF TUKOO SCHANNAH AND STLICHOOT SCHNOCHWAY A very long time ago there was a very strong man - the strongest man that ever existed, named Tukoo-Schannah. He could pull up trees with their roots, take a whale by the tail and rip it in two; he was such a strong man. He was also a very great diver; he could dive from the shore and proceed under the water as far as ever he wanted to without coming to the surface. And there was another very strong man named Stlichoot Schnochway who lived on the other side of the water. And Tukoo Schannah determined to try his strength with Stlichoot Schnochway. So one day he goes down to the beach and dives under the water. He travels a long long way till he comes to a large rock which bars his progress. He put out his hand and gave it a push to get it out of the way, but he splits the rock open and gets inside the rock and the rock closes on him. The rock continues the journey till they come to where Stlichoot Schnochway lived; and Stlichoot Schnochway was very glad Tukoo Schannah had come; and Tukoo Schannah told him how he had heard what a wonderfully strong man Stlichoot Schnochway was and that he had come to test their strengths. And he told Stlichoot Schnochway to break open the rock and liberate him and Stlichoot Schnochway tried and tried and tried but could not. Then Tukoo Schannah spread his hands out gently and the rock falls asunder. Tukoo Schannah then takes Stlichoot Schnochway by the hand and forces him to lie down prone on the ground. Tukoo Schannah then takes a rope made of the Sea-Lion and ties it to a large tree and tells Stlichoot Schnochway to pull up the tree out of the ground, and he pulls and pulls and pulls but the tree does not move. Then Tukoo Schannah took the sea-lion rope and with an easy pull out comes the tree by the roots. Then Stlichoot Schnochway turns to the people and proclaims Tukoo Schannah the strongest man. PUBLIC WORKS UPDATE WATER RESULTS This week the chlorine level in our water system is 0.95. The chlorine is put in our water to kill bacteria WINTER CLEANUP On Jan. 10, 2011, Fox Disposal will place two bins in our community. One will be by the bus shed and the other will be at the old school site. The band truck will be available to pick up and unload garbage. All community members are invited to take part to help out. WAKAS HALL The door closure on the front door has seized (frozen) part way, where the door won’t close or open. The door closure will be replaced whenever North Island Glass gets the part to me. CEMETERY When I went to pick up the burial planks, shovels and ropes, I could only find one rope when there should have been three. If anyone finds the other two ropes please contact me. I have also noticed that a lot of the grave markers are falling apart. Any ideas on what can be done to get them put back, I think that the band only funds the first marker. Thank you, from Bob (250-230-0087)
DID YOU KNOW... Germany made the first fake Christmas trees. They were made of goose feathers dyed green... “Jingle Bells” was written for Thanksgiving and then became a popular Christmas song... In Greek, X means Christ. That is where the word “X-Mas” comes from...

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT UPDATE After our first community meeting we were able to hold 2 other community meetings geared towards the younger members of the community. We were able to sit down with the youth from the Eke Me-Xi as well as Reed Allen’s and Norman Charlie’s grade 7 class. It was truly a wonderful experience to listen and work with these bright and energetic kids about their vision for the future! It is so very interesting to see the same ideas and concerns coming from all three groups. In the New Year I want to come to a couple of the locations where some of our people work to take an hour of your time and have the same type of talks that we have been having with the youth and Elders. Some locations I’m looking at are Hardy Buoys and Keltic. There is much work to be done in a short period of time at the start of the New Year, I am hoping that the Community will all participate in this very import work so that we have a true representation from all community members. We will be looking at all of the information that we have gathered, we will discuss what direction the community wants to go and we will have to talk about the legal parts of the direction that the people want to go. It is an exciting time to get involved with the Economic Development of the Gwa’sala‘Nakwaxda’xw people. On a personal note I would like to thank you for opening your hearts and minds to me in the short time that I have been here. To all of you that have gone out of your way to help teach and guide me Gilakas’la. From the Browne family, my wife Cyndi and my two son’s Clayton and Benton we wish you the very best through the Christmas season and have a safe and wonderful New Year!! Play Dou gh Ornaments • • • • •
4 cups of flour 1 cup of salt 1 and 1/2 cups of water 1 teaspoon of mineral or cooking oil Food coloring ( your choice of colour, optional)
You will need to mix the flour and salt together first. Then add the water a little at a time and knead the dough with your hands as you would bread dough. The food colouring and oil can be added once the dough is fully kneaded. The oil is optional as it makes the dough more shiny and keeps it from sticking to your hands. The dough should not be to dry or to sticky. If you need to you can add a little more water if it is to dry or a little more flour if it is to sticky. The play dough must be stored in a zip lock baggie until you use it or it will dry out and become hard. To make the ornaments you will need Christmas cookie cutters in all different shapes. Roll out the play dough and cut the dough with the cookie cutters. Place a hole at the top of the shape for a hanger to go through. You will need to bake the ornaments in an oven pre heated to 250 degrees. It takes about one to two hours depending on the size of the ornaments that you choose. The ornaments will start to turn a light gold and be hard and hollow sounding when you tap them. The bottoms will be slightly brown. Do not over cook as they will burn and turn dark brown around the edges just like a cookie. Once they are done cooking let them cool completely. You can paint them if you want, and put a ribbon or string through the hanging hole. These are nice gifts to give to your teachers, parents, and friends at Christmas time to hang on their Christmas trees and they are so special because they were made by you! 27

Su gar Cookie Recipe Makes About 8 Dozen • • • • • • • • •
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour, plus more for work surface 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened 1 cup granulated sugar 1 large egg 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract Gel-paste food coloring in pink and green Sanding sugar, for sprinkling 1. Whisk together flour, salt, and baking powder in a large bowl; set aside. Put butter and granulated sugar into the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment; mix on medium speed until pale and fluffy. Mix in egg and vanilla. Reduce speed to low. Add flour mixture; mix until combined. Divide dough in half. Shape both pieces into disks.Wrap disks in plastic wrap, and refrigerate until firm, at least 1 hour.
2. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Remove 1 disk from refrigerator; let stand at room temperature until slightly soft, 5 to 10 minutes. Roll out dough on a piece of lightly floured parchment to a 1/8-inch thickness, dusting with flour as needed. Cut out shapes with 2-by-1 1/2-inch fluted oval cutter. Lightly press 1-inch alphabet cutter into dough; do not cut all the way through. Re-roll scraps, and cut. (If dough becomes too soft, refrigerate 10 minutes.) Repeat with remaining dough. Space 1 1/2 inches apart on baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle with sanding sugar. 3. Bake, rotating halfway through, until edges are golden, 16 to 18 minutes. Transfer to wire racks; let cool completely. Cookies can be stored in airtight containers at room temperature up to 1 week. Cookie Cutter Candles SUPPLIES: • Cookie Cutters (choose stapes that will stand up) • Honeycomb wax sheets in various colors (An 8- by 16-inch sheet will make 1 or 2 candles) • Wicks • Scissors 1. For each candle, use a cookie cutter to make 10 identical shapes from the wax sheets. Divide the shapes into two stacks of 5. 2. Sandwich a wick between the two stacks, starting at the bottom and extending it beyond the top by at least an inch. Press the sheets together gently. If they don’t stick together, take the wax layers apart and use a hair dryer to gently warm each one before restacking them, adding the wick as instructed above. 3. Trim the wick to about a half-inch. Stand your candle up, shaping the base as needed to make it sit securely. http://familyfun.go.com/christmas/homemade-christmas-gifts/last-minute-christmas-gifts/cookie-cutter-candles-801164/
