OVER 160 SURVEYS!
Here’s what you told us: Thomas Jack, Gloria Brotchie, Cara Anderson, Lucy Scow and Lori Anderson have been busy surveying community members in the last two weeks to help us put together a human resources database. At last count, 169 people had been surveyed! Our target was 120, so we have done way better than we hoped!

From the Band Manager’s Desk:
W
e have been the lucky recipients of some extra funding from a couple of different places. The Sasamans Society (who just hired Gloria Walkus as their new Community-Based Collaborator to work with the Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw Nations) have given us $5,000 to go towards youth activities. The Vancouver Island Health Authority has also given us $5,000 to go towards the Housing First Project. Thank you very much to both organizations, with every little bit of extra funding we are able to do more for our community, especially the youth. We are part of a group called Gwa’balis that is taking part in the Pacific Integrated Commercial Fisheries Initiative (PICFI, prounounced pick-fee). Through PICFI we will able to purchase many commercial fishing licenses and have them fished in the way that we want (for example, many small gillnetters to fill a quota instead of one big boat, so more fishermen can benefit). The PICFI program also has funding to help us purchase fishing equipment, do training, and set up a business to market and sell our seafood. This is an exciting project and I will share more information as we move farther along. The other nations in Gwabalis are Quatsino, Tlatlasikwala, Danakda’xw/Awaetlala and Mamalilikulla. If you want more information about PICFI, go to this website: http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/ picfi-ipcip/index-eng.htm The Human Resources Survey project is a huge success! I am learning many interesting things from the results, including the fact that the vast majority of you are willing to volunteer your time to train to work for the Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw Nations in all of the different positions. We have been talking for a long time about job shadowing, and this survey is going to help us put that desire into action. Please remember that the Tsulquate Spring Clean-Up is happening on April 14-15. It is up to all of us to make sure our community reflects our pride and self-respect. Public Works Update The chlorine level for this week is 0.93. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS UPDATE:
I ‘ve been promoting the level one emergency plan that we now have. I had an information table set up at the Health and Wellness Day on March 16 and at the community lunch on March 17. I explained about the plan and had a volunteer sign up sheet. Altogether twenty people signed up. I have set up a training session called Neighbourhood Preparedness Program which will be taught by Chuck Lok, who is the Regional District of Mount Waddington Emergency Coordinator. The session will take place at Wakas Hall on April 4 at 10 - 12. See you all there. I also attended a meeting with the District of Port Hardy about how emergencies can be handled better that affect our communities. We are working on having a joint emergency plan, current contact information, phone trees and having a brochure to hand out to our communities. I was involved on a conference call with PEP, INAC, Regional Districts and First Nations on Vancouver Island. The call was to get feedback on how everything was handled here in regards to the earthquake in Japan which generated the tsunami wave to come towards us on Vancouver Island. Thanks, Bob Swain, Public Works
