The Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw School is busy planning for kindergarten for next year. The school has to decide if we are going to have one or two classes. As a result, we need to know if your child is planning on attending our school in September.

Children ages 3-16 years old can get ONE bracelet for a day at the carnival. However, you need to go to Health & Family Services and grab two garbage bags and fill them by helping clean up around the reserve. Fill those two bags and then put them into the Big Blue Bin. Garbage pick up must be done AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to qualify for the free bracelet! Bracelets will be handed out on Saturday, April 23rd from 10-12 noon at Health & Family Services.

I hope you all had a great weekend! A few announcements this week: we will be getting the funding from Trust as soon as 2 of the Trustees sign it that need to. I am hoping Robert gets their signatures with in the next couple of days so we can start up some fun activities :) There is an IMPORTANT LUNCH MEETING ON THURSDAY, APRIL 14TH @ 12 NOON! PLEASE BE SURE YOU ARE THERE. We will be starting the nominations for escorts for the trip this year. We will also start planning other minor details for the trip at this meeting as well. I need equal involvement from all Elders in meetings such as these. Thank you to Mary Henderson & Mary V. Rufus for coming down on Thursday and helping with the catering that day for Trust. Neighbourhood Emergency Preparedness Program On Monday April 4, eight people were in attendance for the presentation which was done by Chuck Lox (the Regional District Emergency Coordinator). Seven areas were covered which have to do with the neighbourhood program. They cover what the neighbourhood response units would need people for:

The purpose of the neighbourhood program are as guidelines for us to use when disaster strikes and we may be cut off from
the outside world or the other resources (example - ambulance, fire department) are busy elsewhere. If there is one of these areas that interests you please feel free to attend our emergency preparedness committee meetings. Our next meeting is scheduled for April 12, at 10:00 a.m. at the Youth Centre. In the event of an emergency, our community will meet at Wakas Hall which is our designated reception centre. I am also the emergency coordinator for our community.
Water Results The chlorine reading for this week is 0.52.
Spring Cleanup Our spring cleanup is scheduled for April 14 & 15. Four bins have been ordered, one will be at the band office, one by the park and two at the old school site. On Monday April 11, I’ll start taking the appliances off the reserve, this will make the bins lighter when it is weighed at Seven Mile. First Nations People have an increased chance of getting Type 2 diabetes especially if their family has had a history of Type 2 diabetes, they have excess weight in their stomach, eat lots of processed/refined food (fast food, quick meals), have had babies over 9 pounds, have high blood pressure and/or high cholesterol, was an unusually large or small baby, have excessive stress, physically inactive (exercise less than 3 times a week), sleep deprived, or smoke. People with diabetes have increased their chances of complications of diabetes such as heart disease, kidney disease, nerve damage (neuropathy: numbness in hands & feet; carpal tunnel syndrome; autonomic neuropathy: irregular heartbeat, delayed digestion of food, erectile dysfunction; dental problems: gum disease, dental abscesses, oral thrush; autonomic neuropathy: feeling full quicker, alternating diarrhea with constipation, delays in the stomach emptying leading to nausea, vomiting, and bloating; and possible blindness due to retinopathy (high blood sugars disrupts the proper function of the eyes)—which may take months or years to develop but once retinopathy is present will progress very quickly.

DECORATING EASTER EGGS BLOWING OUT EGGSHELLS FOR DECORATING To create a blown-out decorative Easter egg, first you must blow the egg out of its shell. Be sure to do this over a bowl. You can then use the egg for breakfast or baking. To blow out an egg, poke two holes in it, one at either end, lengthwise. The hole for the egg contents to exit should be about a quarter of an inch in diameter. First, poke a hole with a thick sharp sewing needle, pushing through the shell gently, and with very light force. Then, use a larger item to enlarge the hole. Once the first hole is completed, follow the same process to create the second hole in the other end of the egg, holding the egg up slightly above eye level, so you can see what you’re doing without spilling the egg all over the counter. It helps to make sure you puncture the yoke before trying to blow it out. Finally, hold the egg over the bowl, and blow into the top hole. Be sure your grasp on the egg is not too tight or it will crack. Blow hard enough so that the egg comes out of its shell, but not so hard that the entire shell breaks, in which case you will have to start all over again. Cover and refrigerate the bowl of egg whites and yolks immediately. Use within three days. Once you’ve emptied the shells, you need to remove egg residue from the inside of the shell to prevent mold and bacteria from forming. Fill the sink or a large bowl with warm water and a few drops of dish soap. Submerge each shell to fill it with soapy water and shake. Let sit for five minutes, then drain the water. Empty each eggshell and rinse well. Set aside to air dry.

Botanical Eggs 1. With a tiny paintbrush, apply egg white to the back of a leaf or sprig; use tweezers to center it on the egg, and press down gently with your fingers. 2. Cut a nylon stocking into 5-inch tubes. Stretch open one side of a tube, carefully wrapping it over the leaf to hold it in place, then pull remainder around the egg (to the side opposite the leaf). Tie with string. 3. For dye, mix 1/2 cup water, 2 tablespoons vinegar, and 1 teaspoon liquid food coloring, depending on the desired color. Holding the string, dunk the egg into the dye; press down with a spoon to immerse it completely. Let the egg sit for 5 minutes, periodically turning and spooning dye over it. 4. Remove egg from dye, and blot dry with paper towels. Snip the string, and untie nylon to check the color. If the egg isn’t dark enough, re-tie nylon, and return to dye. When desired color is reached, remove nylon and carefully peel away the leaf. Blot with paper towels, blow out excess water with egg blower, and place egg leaf side up on paper towels to dry completely.
