Leslie will be working from next week until September. Her job is to organize recreation activities for youth & children. These activities could include soccer, hockey, swims, field trips to do active things like hiking or canoeing, camping trips, or whatever else that is active that the Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw youth are interested in.

Leslie Taylor Child (Band Manager Les Taylor’s daughter) was hired last week as the new Youth Recreation Coordinator for the Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw Nations! Seven other people applied for the job. Leslie was chosen because she is a Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw Band member, she already has lots of ideas about recreation activities for the summer (including trips to the home lands!) and she is a great role model for other youth in the community. For example, she has graduated from high school and is taking college courses to work towards becoming a social worker. She volunteered at her church’s daycare in Victoria, and she recently competed in the Salmon Princess contest in Alert Bay.

FROM THE BAND MANAGER ABORIGINAL DAY: I hope all of you take part in some of the celebrations out in Fort Rupert for Aboriginal Day. I am hoping next year we can plan our own celebration and I was hoping someone from here would take the lead in organizing activities for our band members. Perhaps next year we can plan this for our band members. We should take a great deal of pride in who we are as aboriginal people and celebrate our heritage. Please contact me if you want to help organize some activities and plan for those events. ELECTIONS: Please take notice that we need to have our elections very soon. The tentative dates will be: Nominations - Monday, June 27, 2011 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00pm @ Adult Education Center Advance Poll – Monday, July 11, 2011 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm @ Adult Education Center Election Day – Monday, July 25, 2011 from 8:00am to 8:00pm @ Adult Education Center. Please contact me if these dates conflict with anything!!! I’ll be formalizing these dates very soon. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: There will community consultation with respect to getting your imput into our new Economic Development Corporation and we need your imput on how that’s going to be run, so please ensure that you come out to theses very important meetings!! GUARDIAN WATCHMEN: Our Coastal Guardian Watchmen Program is starting very soon and I’m very excited that we can offer a little longer season this year. It is our hope to have this operation going all year round so we can monitor our homelands all year long. GARBAGE: I’ve noticed that people are just leaving garbage out on the road. It seems that every time we try to clean up the reserve people seem to think that they can replace with new garbage. It’s a never-ending battle!! Please be responsible and put your garbage where it suppose to go. This is including stoves, fridges and couches. If you need to get rid of it, please call Bob during working hours and arrange for pickup and disposal. Bob will provide you the truck to do this. All you need to do is supply the help to load and unload. Gila’kasla, Les Taylor

UBC Community Appreciation Lunch

On June 14 four students and faculty members from the University of British Columbia came to Tsulquate to hold a thank-you lunch for Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw community members who have worked with people from UBC over the last few years. Johanna Mazur and Aftab Erfan (with baby Seff in tow) were the students, accompanied by Penny Gurstein (Chair of the UBC School of Community and Regional Planning) and Margot Young from the Faculty of Law. Natasha Walkus helped organize the lunch which was attended by over a dozen community members, plus those attending the electrical training who joined in with our group for lunch. Thanks to the folks from UBC as well as those Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw community members who took part in the lunch and/or the interviews.

Plumbing & Electrical training

Between June 7 and June 17, BC Housing offered two hands-on training courses (plumbing and electrical) to Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw community members. Instructors Dave Farrar and Jim Sawyer taught students how to fix leaks, install/repair faucets, tubs & toilets, and install & repair outlets, light switches, and stoves. On the last day Gary McDermott from the Industry Training Authority came and gave a presentation on how to get into the trades. Participants enjoyed the courses, especially the fact that they were so hands-on, with live wiring, sinks with running water, real stoves, real toilets, and lots of one-on-one instruction. To hear interviews with the participants, check out the website at http://www.gwanak.info/for-members/projects/bc-housing-training-2011

Tre at y U pdat e U p d a t e Guardian Watch m e n

Well the 2011 Watchmen Season is starting! We have gone through the hiring process where we received 4 applications for 2 positions. I was pleased by the quality of applicants that we received this year but a little disappointed with the numbers. The successful candidates were Doug Johnny Sr. and Leslie Walkus. Doug has provided the program with leadership and experience that has proven itself by Leslie learning from Doug enough in his part time position last year to take all of the required training and pass for his certificates. It was decided to also hire a third person who will take some training right at the start of the season that will allow him to cover if either of the two other crew members can’t make it. The on-call person is Tom Henderson Jr. We will be heading out on our first patrols in the coming weeks after we have done all of the program training and the boat is mechanically checked out.

The Storytelling Film Project

Starting on July 8, 2011 several professional film makers will come to our community to offer a workshop to teach interested individuals how to create Digital Stories and Films. The Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw Nations Treaty Office received funds to offer this training. The purpose is to create films that tell our stories about our families, our way of life (past and present), our lands and our community. For too long our people have been unable to live in our own homelands, our children have been unable to catch fish in the ‘hotspots’, or pick berries where their grandparents did for centuries.

I would also like to bring to the community’s attention the amazing opportunity for 2 youth in our community to participate in the Junior Watchmen program. This opportunity is open to any youth that are registered and/or attending High School or Post Secondary School. Please see the job posting for full details!!

Through this project we hope to provide an opportunity for our people to tell their own vivid stories by capturing the past and present on film. In these ways our children will want to watch and to learn about their own histories. There are many great stories to share and the film project is an opportunity to bring those stories alive.

We look forward to a tremendous season being our community’s eyes and ears in our Traditional Territories.

If you are interested, contact myself and watch for posters and postings about the project in the Band Office.

In your words

Cathy Swain shares her thoughts on the Canucks’ loss, and an anonymous parent shares their thoughts on the differences between punishment and discipline. Share your own thoughts with Yo! News by sending them to jessieh@gwanakplan.org

Cathy on the Discipline vs.

Canucks

This is to thank each and every one of you who got together and cheered on the Vancouver Canucks! While it is sad that they didn’t win the Stanley Cup, it’s totally awesome that they made it to the Stanley Cup Finals in the first place! It is terribly sad to see what happened in Vancouver AFTER the game was finished. And I was very, very, very sad about seeing the coverage about it all on TV, the newspapers, on the Internet. What happened would, I believe, have happened whether the Canucks won or lost though. As the rioters had the materials with them to start the fires and cause destruction / with them before they went to watch the game. What’s great about it all though, is the fact that people are using the Internet to find out who the culprits are that caused thousands of dollars worth of damage (I even heard that it was over a million dollars), what’s great is that tons and tons of people came together to clean up that mess. And that there may be a rally to honor those wonderful people in Vancouver who went downtown to clean it up. It’s possibly going to be next Saturday (June 25th)! Anyway, I strongly agree with what Allison Henderson suggested on Facebook, that we should have a parade of sorts to honor the Vancouver Canucks and the other teams who played in the play-offs for that matter. Wear our team colors! We all saw many, many people getting into the spirit and being proud of OUR Vancouver Canucks! So they didn’t make it and win the Cup, BUT they did bring us together, right? I have been a luke-warm fan up to this past year but have been so inspired by their team effort that I have become a full-fledged Canuck fan! I look forward to going to Vancouver to watch more hockey games with more people! And to even go on road trips to go watch games elsewhere! Calgary, Edmonton….They’re not that far away and are drive-able! Go Canucks Go! Let’s have a potluck get-together at Tsulquate park on the next beautiful sunny day! Who’s in with this idea? Call (949-7797 or text 230-8191) if you want in on this awesome idea of Allison’s!

Punishment

This generation is different than the last, in a sense that they can get away with more. For example, they have easy access to alcohol and drugs at such a young age, it can be challenging for them to really pay attention. Discipline sounds like a harsh word, as if discipline and punishment are the same. They’re not. Discipline is different than punishment because it teaches children to learn from their mistakes rather than making them suffer for them. In fact, imposing suffering actually shifts the focus from the lesson that needs to be learned to who is in control. As a result, punishment focuses on the parent being responsible for controlling a child’s behaviour, rather than the child controlling his/her own behaviour, which is the focus of discipline. They hit their own learning moment, adding more character to their foundation. To do this in the ‘right way’ goes so much further and they fare so much better in the long term. My hope is that they’ll stop for a minute and realize the need to respect people who provide safety, security and guidance to ensure their well-being. My hope for them is to be more determined, independent so that their impact in this workd is very meaningful. When they don’t have this, they come across as lazy, no drive or motivation to make it. They have it within them; that powerhouse within to where they hit those learning moments, to practice the resilience, life skills to “who they are meant to be”. They need to know that anything worth achieving is worth working for, step by step. Overall I have to keep believing they can change for the better, because better is possible.

Job search

tips & tricks

Last week I had the privilege of conducting 15 job interviews, and helping four people with resumes and cover letters. I have noticed a few key things that might help you if you are looking for work:

Read the posting thoroughly

Many times it seems like people have not read all of the details on the job posting. Then they come into the interview asking questions that were answered on the posting. This makes it seem like the applicant doesn’t pay attention. A big no-no is to come in without a cover letter if the posting asks for one.

Prepare for the interview

Once you have read the posting, do even a tiny bit of research. Find out about the company/office where you’re applying, see if you can talk to others who have the same job that you are applying for. The more research you do, the more you will shine in the interview.

Tailor your cover letter

If you can, try and make a resume that is specific to the job you’re applying for. For example, if you’re going for a construction job, highlight your construction experience and don’t put so much detail about your office experience. If you can’t tailor your resume (not enough experience to pick and choose) at least make sure your cover letter is specific to the job, and talks about why you would be the best candidate for that particular job.

Looks count

I am amazed by how many people have shown up to job interviews in jogging pants, track suits, ball caps, t-shirts, or other casual clothes. When you go to a job interview, make sure you dress as nicely as you can. That means no t-shirts, no sneakers, no stains/rips, and definitely no cleavage.

Have confidence

Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw community members, have more confidence! So many of you have all the training and experience you need, but when you come into an interview with a quiet voice, very short answers to questions, or if you don’t show up because you’re worried you’ll do badly, you sell yourself short. Good luck! ~ By Jessie Hemphill Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw Nations Yo! News - 06/20/11 Page 17
