EMERGENCY PLAN UPDATE: The emergency committee is getting ready to take a two day course called EOC Essentials. This course will be at North Island College on Sept. 14 & 15th. It will give the committee members an understanding on how an emergency operations centre will work in the event of a disaster.

The committee members will need to have this course as a prerequisite for more training in operations/planning/logistics and finance, which are parts within our emergency plan.

From the band manager FINANCE CLERK: I’d like to welcome Janine Sheard to our team until Lucy gets back from her leave. Janine been hired to replace Lucy as our Finance Clerk. Welcome to our team!! To Lucy… I sincerely hope your trip goes well and look forward to your return.

TRUST: I heard some disturbing news going around the reserve recently. I was told that the reason that I don’t have anything to do the Trust anymore was that I was asking for more money to add to my job as band manager. Nothing could be further from the truth. I received a letter from the Trust thanking me for my efforts and that my services were no longer required. I never have nor was I asking for more money from the Trust. There was a suggestion that because I was employed as a band manger perhaps the Trust should consider reimbursing the band for services rendered because it was taking up to 30% of my time. That does not mean extra pay, just that the band should be compensated for the work done for the Trust. The pay was to remain the same.

We have purchased a Float camp recently and we have our first contract for some tree planters. We hope to have structures in place soon to accommodate band members and elders to attend the site as soon as we bring the camp up to a better standard.

DRIVE SLOW: The kids are all going back to school now and I want to remind people driving cars to slow down to 25 km on the reserve and pay extra attention to the young ones on the road.

FISHERIES & WATCHMEN: We will be winding down our fisheries and Guardian Watchmen Program soon and I sincerely hope that you can attend our season’s debriefing and presentation at year end to hear what the programs have accomplished and the direction we are trying to head in for the future.

GARBAGE: The Fall clean up is coming up soon. Regarding debris on the side of the road- please contact Bob.. don’t just put it out on road.

Well, looks like we're back to routine of Sept. 21st~ Elder's monthly lunch meet getting the kids and grandkids ready @ 12pm Elder's Centre, guest speakers and off to school already eh! Hope you will be there as well :) all had a wonderful summer. Here is a bit of what September activities look Sept. 28th~ Catering job for the Trust Committee. Start time is 9am as well.

Smokehouse On Sept. 5th Vivian & Janet Paul’s smokehouse burned down. Here is what a couple of you had to say on the Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw Facebook page: “Knowing how important fish is in our lives and also how hard Vivian and Janet both worked on their fish, Bob and I will donate six of our frozen fish to them, once someone builds them a smokehouse. No, this is not a challenge to anyone else, it’s just a contribution. If anyone else can, that would be great, I know that six fish is not much, but who knows? If a few people donate one, two, three fish, it just might add up. We both totally admire them for their commitment and dedication to fish preservation.”

“As many of you know, I have been working as Margaret’s Assistant in the Finance Office for the past five years in between travelling and going to school. I will be leaving again on September 10th, this time to travel to South Africa. I will be back March 1st, 2012, in time for the fiscal yearend and the audit. Dear Parents of Nursery children: School begins for Nursery children on September 12th or 14th.

Classes run Monday to Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m.

If there are too many students for one afternoon class, the children will be divided into a morning and afternoon class. This will be done on a Þrst come, Þrst choice basis.

Please note: All children must be fully toilet trained before they can attend class. They must be completely out of diapers or pull-ups.

The children will need a pair of runners for classroom and gym use. These are to be kept at school so be sure to mark your childʼs name on them.

It is helpful to have an extra set of old clothes which are kept at school in case they are needed. It is important that the childrenʼs names are on all of their belongings and also on their bag.

The children are invited to bring one fruit to put in our sharing basket. This fruit will be cut up and shared at snack time. Beverages are provided.

VOTING PROCESS Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Trust Committee All Band Meeting on September 29, 2011

BEFORE THE MEETING: 1.

Check the Band Membership List (posted at the Band Office) to see if you are registered to vote. Contact Sandra Charlie, Membership Clerk, at (250) 949-8131 with questions about band membership.

WHEN YOU ARRIVE: 1.

Go to the registration desk and sign-in with your ID (If you don’t have ID, there will be people at the Registration Desk to vouch for your identity) 2.

You will receive a numbered orange card which represents your vote 3.

Once 25% of voting Band Members arrive (and this is doublechecked) the Electoral Officer will start the meeting DURING THE VOTE: 1.

You will get a chance to hear about proposals and ask questions before the Electoral Officer calls the vote 2.

Then you go back to the registration desk with your orange card 3.

At the registration desk you will sign-in again and trade your orange card for your ballot 4.

You will write or to vote yes or no for the proposal in a secret ballot (any other marks besides or will void your ballot) AFTER YOU VOTE: 1.

You will bring your ballot back to the Electoral Officer, who will count all the votes with the help of 5 Trustees 2.

The Electoral Officer will do a second count for accuracy 3.

If 50% plus 1 of the votes are in favour, the proposal is approved. If 50% or less votes are in favour, the proposal is rejected 4.

The Electoral Officer will write a report to the Trust Committee with the result 5.

School starts on Tuesday, September 6th at 9:00 am for students in Grades 1 to 7 only. Students will be dismissed at 10:30 am.

Students in Kindergarten will start school on Monday, September 12th.

They will begin the year with a half-day schedule (9:00-12:00) and start a full day on Monday, September 19th.

The four year old children in Nursery will start school on Monday, September 12th. Nursery classes will be held in the afternoons (1:00-3:00) from Monday to Thursday. ALL NURSERY KIDS MUST REGISTER IN PERSON.
