Are You Ready?

Training • Don’t let your dog think he/she is the leader of your ‘pack’ (your family) - if dogs think they are the leader, they might attack a member of your family who he/she thinks is challenging his position in the ‘pack’ or a person they perceive as a threat to your family • Ensure your dog respects members of your family as being in control, e.g.: • Have all members of your family occasionally feed your dog • Make your dog stay still while you groom him/her • Make your dog follow you through narrow passages, e.g., doors, down stairs • Pet your dog by pressing down from the top of the head across the shoulders • Make your dog learn to obey at least one command (e.g., “sit”) • Put your dog through obedience classes

Owning a dog is time-consuming, expensive, and difficult. You will have to pay hundreds of dollars in the first couple of years for vaccination shots, examinations and spaying/neutering. You will have to pay for food, collar, leash and ID tags (mandatory in the town of Port Hardy) and shelter for your dog if you plan to keep it outside. You will have to spend hours each day walking, feeding, playing with and training your puppy. You will spend a lot of money on cleaning supplies for your house when your pet makes a mess and perhaps wrecks your belongings.

Owning a pet is not a decision to be made lightly - are you ready?

Spaying & Neutering You should have your cat or dog spayed (for females) or neutered (for males) when they are about 6-7 months old. This prevents them from having babies. In seven years, one female cat can make 450,000 kittens!

If your dog misbehaves: • Instead of hitting your dog (e.g., with rolled up paper), say “no!” firmly • Put your dog outside - so they learn that indoors is for relaxation

If your dog chases its tail and/or rubs its rear end on the floor: • Take your dog to a vet or groomer to have anal glands checked Regularly: • Use a shampoo designed for dogs • Buy dry dog food which is age appropriate, e.g. puppy, younger than 7 (maintenance), older than 7

For females, if they’re over a year old or have had a litter of puppies, there’s a mature-fee because the procedure is longer/riskier. This fee ranges from $67.20-$112 depending on the size of the dog.

dangerous dogs A Warning to the Owners

These dogs have been seen around the Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw School often. A child got bit last week. This is a warning to the owners of these and other dangerous dogs: If your dog is caught running loose, it will be destroyed.

If you are aware of puppies and/or friendly older dogs that are abandoned or mistreated, we can fly them to the SPCA in Victoria for free. Please contact Les Taylor at the Band Office (949-8343 or manager@gwanak.info) regarding the location and description of dogs that should be removed from the community. If you have dogs or cats that you want spayed/neutered, please contact Les to have your name & contact info added to a list for a possible spay/neuter clinic. Any other ideas about how to control the dog and cat population are appreciated.

quonset hut cleanup The Quonset hut project is really starting to shape up.

For those who don’t know what the project is about, we are cleaning out the old hall and building a big wall so that things can be stored and projects can be done on one side and the kids can play hockey and soccer on the other.

So, on Saturday Nov. 12th and Sunday Nov. 13th a group of community members got together to do a huge clean-up. We filled up an entire 30 foot garbage bin, rearranged peoples belongings and re-stacked countless timbers and boards. There was a great feeling in the air. Everyone worked hard and a wheel-barrel at a time we got closer and closer to the vision we all had in mind. Ever since we started this project people have been popping by and telling stories that really inspired the project. We heard great stories of how the hall used to be teeming with activity. Everything from potlatches to huge hockey tournaments. We heard of great rivalries GNN teams had against other nations, the police department hockey team the boys from Newfoundland and many other great dramas. All these stories really kept us going as we worked our way towards completion.

This Quonset hut project isn’t only benefiting the people who plan to use it for sports but also those who are interested in culture too. In the back of the Quonset hut there were two huge old CTM’s (Culturally modified trees). These were accidentally logged years ago and then given to the GNN nation. We had them brought down to the elementary school so that the students there, the students from Eke Me-Xi and any interested community members can see and learn how the local first nations used to harvest their lumber. Thanks to Hardy Builders for volunteering their big HIAB truck free of charge.

All that’s left to do now is to forklift all the lumber into organized piles, pressure wash and sweep the floor, move the construction storage shack and build the wall.

We’ve already had someone kindly donate two hockey nets too!

Huge thanks to Ernie Henderson, Harry Puglas, Alexander Heuman, Dorey Brotchie, Chris (Small Fry), Dwayne Daly, and the boys at Hardy Builders.

We’ve had great support so far and many others have offered to help in the future. Come out and do your part Saturday Dec. 3rd. Food and drink will be provided again. Let’s make this happen.
