Others who helped organize include Lucy Scow, Betty Walkus, Ernie Scow and Buddy Walkus (pictured above), Charlies Willie who MC’ed, Johnny Henderson who organized the feast of traditional foods for both lunch and dinner, and Ollie & Libby Walkus who organized the gifts. Of course, many, many others helped out as well and many thank-yous were offered up throughout the day. The purpose of the feast was to come together, united as the Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw Nations, celebrating the fact that we have made it through hardships while keeping our culture and community spirit alive. Charles Willie said “That was the intent of today, was to come together as one, to come together and heal as one... Just let go of whatever you need to let go, and at the end of the day you can say this is who I am, this is who I want to be.”
Dances included: the memorial song; 4 welcome songs, including a ‘Nakwaxda’xw welcome dance with a newly composed song, check it out on the gncommunications Youtube channel online!; Hilikala; Nudzistala dance; children’s hamatsa; ‘Nakwaxda’xw, Gwa’sala and Dzawada’enuxw ladies’ dances; salmon dance; Sisiwala dance; paddle dance; Tlasala dances; Echo mask dance; Maxinuxw (killer whale) mask dance; Dzunuqwa mask As the day unfolded, the Gwa’sala and ‘Nakwaxda’xw dance; and fun dances, including one created especially “treasure boxes” were opened and many songs and for this feast. (please excuse the spelling on the names dances were performed by community members. of the dances, and feel free to e-mail me the correct ones) Charles Willie said “The intent of the dance program is to show all the different connections, the various families, that are part of the Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw Na- (More on page 10) tions.” Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw Nations Yo! Parenting group
On March 1 Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw Nations got a visit from Eric Magnuson and Bill Guerin from Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC, the new name for INAC). Mr. Magnuson (below right) is the Regional Director General (a.k.a. big boss) for British Columbia. Mr. Guerin is the Community Development Director, who deals with many things from status cards to CCP.
Laura’s Parenting Group starts Tues and Weds with lunch and child care provided. Starts at 9-3pm in the Elders Building..Everyone is invited to attend.
Treaty Related Measures Every once in awhile a treaty topic needs more research or discussion. The Treaty Office identifies the need and enters into an agreement or TRM with the federal government. Presently we have two TRM’s – one that looks at governance matters and one that looks at economic development and land expansion. The activities that we are doing under governance are: • • •
Building and developing our own Constitution that reflects our traditional ways Looking at what is needed for our government, programs and services, and staffing, after the treaty is negotiated Making a plan for the future on how to strengthen governance with traditional ways to achieve community goals
The activities that we are doing under economic development TRM are: •
Looking at areas that could meet the community and economic development priorities of the community. This includes identifying additional lands for housing.
For more information about these TRMs, contact Colleen Hemphill, Chief Negotiator at chemphil@telus.net or Jessie Hemphill at jessieh@gwanakplan.org. There have been and will be community events that tie in to these two projects, stay tuned!
The purpose of their visit was to get to know our community face-to-face. They are doing visits to many other communities across BC. During their afternoon here, they met with band office staff, health & family services staff, Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw School staff, and council (Chief Paddy was at the First Nations Summit meeting in Vancouver). Staff introduced themselves, explained what they do for work, and asked questions about different AANDC programs. They also shared a lot of ideas for how to help our community. The main messages that we got across were that we need more support for housing, at least a housing assessment and planning process to begin with. The other big thing is that we need a Human Resources Worker, to help community members get training and work. It was a great opportunity to have the ear of someone in AANDC with the ability to make big changes. We gave Mr. Magnuson a gift to take home, a binder full of information about our community including a map of our home lands, a summary of our Comprehensive Community Plan, a copy of the North Island Regional Protocol Agreement, and a copy of the 1994 RCAP report about the relocation of the Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw.

Thanks from Eke Me-Xi
He said he was not sure what there reply would be but that it was worth a try. I am pleased to say that he called a few days later bragging that he must be one heck of a sales man because they agreed to help us with our cause. The rotary club gave money enough to buy 8 more pair of gumboots. We got them in all different sizes and the rotary club put their logo on the sides of each boot.
Eke Me-Xi would like to thank a couple of organizations in the community who helped to better our program earlier this season. First off, the Ladies Hospital Auxiliary thrift store donated 8 jackets to us for the students who come to school underdressed. We often go down to the beach for longs walks here at Eke Me-Xi and those who are underdressed either do not take part or do not have fun. This class set of jackets really makes our time at the beach more comfortable and enjoyable.
In another effort to better our times on the beach I went around to local businesses to see if any might be interested in donating to our getting a class set of gum boots to go along with our new jackets. We had some interest but Dale Dorward from Macandales really came through for us. He donated us two sets of gumboots. What’s even better than that is he volunteered to take my request to the Rotary Club of which he is a member. So I typed up a proposal for him to bring to them .
Macandales’ kind donation of gumboots along with the Ladies Hospital Auxiliary’s donation of winter jackets have made our times at the beach so much more enjoyable. Many more students participate in our times outdoors. You would think that we would all stay drier having brand-new gum boots. But all they have done is increase our sense of adventure. Now we try things we would have never tried wearing running shoes. It’s pretty ironic that we end up wetter than we’d aver usually get before. We usually end up coming back inside wet, cold and shivering but we always have big smiles on our faces and a great story to tell.

Quonset Hut Update
We have power in the old hall so a stereo can be plugged in and will have the burnt out lights replaced so that sports can be played even when the sun goes down. It is taking a little while to get things finished up there. This is not because I am lazy but I have turned the building of this wall into a learning opportunity to the students of Eke Me-Xi. Every Monday afternoon Leah and I take the students up to the hall and I teach them basic building skills and construction terms. It is really proved to be a hit with many of the kids. They are learning to put their math skills they learn in class to use and use them in practical applications. They are learning tons about tools they have never seen before and experiencing the great feeling of success that comes with seeing something you’ve put your hard work and effort into come together in front of your eyes.
Earlier in the year I began a volunteer initiative to clean up the Quonset hut so that it might be used for hockey and sports. We had some terrific volunteers from in and outside of the community. We got all of the trash and junk cleared out and hauled off and the useable lumber stacked up to the side of the hall. The final step in completing the project is underway. I began building a wall which will divide what will be the carving and storage area from what will be a large full length playing area. This wall is going to be 80 ft. long and 8 ft. high and will help to keep the action in the playing area. This way no one will have to rummage through piles of lumber to search for their lost hockey ball.
So it is taking a lot longer than it was suppose to take but it is going to be a much richer project that our students all feel that they are a part of.

wonderful medicine, the teachings that I’ve learned.” Meals included yu’sa, elk, oolichans, crab, salmon, clam fritters, and many other delicacies. Chief Bill Robertson from Kingcome shared these words: “I’d just like to say thank you... To come breathe the same air, to dance together, dance to the same tune, with our own ancestors with us. I told my son over here to look around, we are one family.” Gary spoke about the importance of our culture, saying “That’s something the government can’t take from us, they can’t take our heritage, our culture, our spirit, the spirit of our language, our singing, our dancing.” He also announced that, through the Trust culture program, some upcoming projects will include refurbishing the community canoe, fixing up the totem poles by the Tsulquate bridge so they face the water, and organizing trips to the homelands for community members this summer. In the background of the feast, Aftab Erfan, UBC student, worked on a mural illustrating the four principles of parenting discussed at community parenting sessions she helped organize earlier this year and last. It was hoped that the mural project would draw some curious community members to ask questions and maybe even paint a bit. Many kids ended up “helping” with the pro-
Many people made speeches throughout the day about the importance of our culture, telling stories of our ancestors and home lands, and sharing visions of hope for our future. Gary Walkus said “The love we have among the Gwa’sala and ’Nakwaxda’xw is truly amazing. I sit up here and witness the spirit, not only here at our log, but the spirit out there, the spirit in our kitchen, the love that goes into our food, the food that came from our homelands, our oceans, our forests, our beaches. All the ject, keep an eye out for updates on this from Aftab. It was a wonderful day, that brought together many community members to share in the healing and celebration. As Chief Paddy Walkus said, let’s keep pushing for a Big House, and maybe the next time we have an event like this it will be in our own gukwdzi! It is always amazing to see our people come together and share the culture and the love. Gila’kasla
