The Sliammon First Nation is just north of Powell River, BC. They are almost the same size as us. They will be voting on their treaty soon. Chief Negotiator Roy Francis and Negotiations Manager, Grace Adams, provided tips on organization, communication, and how they addressed some treaty topics.

Roy stressed the importance of the comprehensive community planning process (CCP) and how they were able to get many things in place before the treaty is finalized in areas such as capacity building, planning and communication to members.
WAKAS HALL CLOSURE
They have electronic media such as the webpage and regular meetings as some ways to keep members up to date. Also they have smaller family meetings. Their Community News, called “NEH MOTL” or “US” is a very inspiring newspaper and way to inform members on treaty updates. We hope to have a small community newspaper as well. The newspaper will help spread information, but it will also be one way to ask for and receive feedback from members) Stay tuned!

PATIENT TRAVEL
I would like to thank all the people who have brought me the doctor’s notes.
Notes:
Bed Bugs:
I need all the doctor’s notes back from everyone who goes away for Medical appointments please and thank you. It needs to be signed by your doctor’s office, plus it shows me your next appointment on there.
Off-reserve Members: I’m asking everyone who is off reserve to please be honest with me if you are living off reserve, if so I can do my best to help you. Send out your paper for travel. I have been getting a lot of people telling me they are living on reserve and I find out later they are living in town. I got a news letter from Sacred Wolf and it says on this paper that Violet Alfred also helps with patient travel for off-reserve her number is 902-0552 if you would like her to help you out. I know this must be getting on everyone’s mind but I have to keep reminding you because I am not getting those back. It is needed for audit purposes. Again, travel will not be covered if your child has an appointment with the dentist here or Alert Bay. They need to say why they are unable to do your child. I’m not doing this to be mean I’m only following Medical Services policies. When our members have moved off reserve you will have to wait at least a month before I am able to do travel for you. I really don’t want to start putting your meals back on hotel, but I will have to if appts aren’t kept.
I also want to mention to everyone not to be ashamed if you have bed bugs in your home. I just want to share with you all I had it in my house and no kidding I had to buy at least 8-10 cans of raid to try and get rid of it. This does not mean you are dirty at all. I just want you to know if you call us I know Victor Walkus & Robert will do their best to get fumigation done at your home. We all need to think about our young children so they don’t get all these bites from those things. No kidding I had lots in my bed room and now I get really paranoid when I see one. So I just wanted to mention to you all who may have that in your home not to feel ashamed about this.
Bunny Away: I will be away on April 25 & 26 for medical appointment for myself. Just want to let you know ahead of time. I also will be away on March 30th using some OT I really don’t want to miss out on my OT so I need to use it.
Cancellations: And once again if you are not going to your appointment/s. you must return your travel and to make sure you cancel your hotel, or you will be billed for that night.
Elders’ Escorts: We are still in need of escorts for our Elders if you are interested please call Christy at front desk. You also will need a reliable vehicle. When taking them to their appointments you must stay with them until they are done. Please leave your name and phone number so we can get in touch with you. PAGE 4

MINISTER JOHN DUNCAN’S VISIT You probably remember that we’ve been having lots of visits lately with people in government, from Mary Polack, Minister of Aboriginal Relations & Reconciliation with BC, to Eric Magnuson, Aboriginal Affairs & Northern Development’s (AANDC)Director General for all of BC, to a visit last week from John Duncan, Minister of AANDC.
Every time we have gone into these meetings we’ve shared stories about our community, what our history is, what our strengths are, and where we need some assistance. Last week we found out that we are, indeed, going to get some funding from AANDC to help out with some areas that aren’t covered under our regular funding. The funding was mentioned in a press release that went out the same day that John Duncan visited.
One of our big complaints has been that the funding we get for renos is almost never enough to cover the actual cost of doing the work properly. The $120,000 is to help us meet the actual cost of doing renos. The $40,000 for the housing strategy (and probably the $20,000 for inspections will be part of this work) is so that we can all sit down, council, trust, staff, housing committee, and community and come up with a better way to tackle our housing issues. The $20,000 for the road is to fix the area by Jessie & Calhoun’s where the water pipe broke under the road and there’s that big rust stain. We also heard that we will probably get $75,000 for a human resources person, to help people find work and increase their education.
We are very pleased that we received this funding, big thanks to John Duncan and AANDC for helping us out. We will keep you posted as these projects move along!

I would like to thank those dedicated people who showed up Thursday nights for fitness...your bodies love you for it too! We will be off for a week or so; but, hopefully, the next fitness night will be on Tuesday, April 10 at the old Robert Scott School gym. Fridays at 1 p.m. remains unchanged. One of our community members brought up the idea of a “Biggest Loser” contest for our community and, to a point, I think it’s a good idea. What I would hope to see is that people feel good about themselves and that is more important than winning a contest. Losing even 10 lbs adds years to your life and lessens your chances of developing Type 2 diabetes. Our nurse can monitor weights (when our new scale comes in—it is a good scale for those over 300 lbs). This type of contest takes great dedication but we can do it if you want to. Let me know by Friday, April 13 :) We can put it into motion. Thank you! Andrea Walkus-Andrew (phone: 250-902-2275) Email: andrea_walkus@telus.net
