The Sliammon First Nation is just north of Powell River, BC. They are almost the same size as us. They will be voting on their treaty soon. Chief Negotiator Roy Francis and Negotiations Manager, Grace Adams, provided tips on organization, communication, and how they addressed some treaty topics.

Roy stressed the importance of the comprehensive community planning process (CCP) and how they were able to get many things in place before the treaty is finalized in areas such as capacity building, planning and communication to members.

They have electronic media such as the webpage and regular meetings as some ways to keep members up to date. Also they have smaller family meetings. Their Community News, called “NEH MOTL” or “US” is a very inspiring newspaper and way to inform members on treaty updates. We hope to have a small community newspaper as well. The newspaper will help spread information, but it will also be one way to ask for and receive feedback from members) Stay tuned!
