Yayuma is 9:30 am to 12:00.

Lunch provided at the hall. 15 year celebration in the afternoon.

Many volunteers are needed to help with setup, serving, cleanup and take down for lunch at the hall, and organizing games at the school field in the afternoon.

PATIENT TRAVEL Notes:

I need all the doctor’s notes back from everyone who goes away for Medical appointments. It needs to be signed by your doctor’s office.

Off-reserve Members: I’m asking everyone who is off reserve to please be honest with me if you are living off reserve, if so I can do my best to help you. Send out your paper for travel. I got a news letter from Sacred Wolf and it says on this paper that Violet Alfred also helps with patient travel for off-reserve her number is 902-0552 if you would like her to help you out.

Travel will not be covered if your child has an appointment with the dentist here or Alert Bay. They need to say why they are unable to do your child. I’m not doing this to be mean I’m only following Medical Services policies.

When our members have moved off reserve you will have to wait at least a month before I am able to do travel for you. I really don’t want to start putting your meals back on hotel, but I will have to if appts aren’t kept.

Cancellations: If you are not going to your appointment/s. you must return your travel and cancel your hotel, or you will be billed for that night.

Elders’ Escorts: We still need escorts for our Elders if you are interested please call Christy at front desk. You also will need a reliable vehicle. When taking them to their appointments you must stay with them until they are done.

PUBLIC WORKS WATER RESULTS: The chlorine reading for this week is .05 which was taken at the Health and Family Services building.

GARBAGE BINS: Just a reminder to keep the bins closed and clipped so the bears can't get into them.

EMERGENCY PLAN: Last Tuesday we held an information session at our Memorial Park. We want to ensure that our community members know where to go and what to do in the event of a disaster. We had at least 50 people drop by to see us and have a bowl of soup. If you want to learn more just contact one of our committee members or myself. We would like to have more community members join us in helping out with the plan.

PUBLIC WORKS: I have a maintenance schedule set up with the Band Manager that I follow. Unfortunately cutting down all the berry bushes in the community is not a part of it because it is too big of a task for one person to do. There is only enough funding available to employ one person.

TREATY UPDATE Hello Community! It’s been a busy time for the Treaty Office. It was great to have a TAC meeting last Tuesday. Over thirty of our people participated. Below is a brief summary of items that were discussed. Each TAC (Treaty Advisory Committee) meeting begins with a conversation about the Homelands, what it was like to live in Blunden Harbor and Takush, to name a couple major villages of the GN Nations. Elders talk about rowing around on small boats, catching fish, picking berries, visiting each other often, community events, etc. The younger participants ask about what it was like in the old days. They talk about wanting opportunities to visit, work and live in the Homelands for short and long periods of time.

A second topic discussed at the recent TAC meeting was: potential GN Settlement Lands.

Maps were presented that showed areas with a lot of detail such as forest potential, residential development potential, known fishing and trapping areas, water supplies, etc.

The third area of discussion focused on the developing GN Nations Constitution, ‘Nusenc Sax’. This is about our law, as developed by our people and is based on our traditional teachings, practices and core values. This discussion has evoked a great deal of input from community members -- it is here where our people realize that indeed we can have a say over the future governance of our community, we can have a say over how decisions are made on important matters that effect our community now and into the future.

I want to acknowledge all who participate in the TAC meetings, we have made a lot of progress at our Negotiation Table, it is community input such as what we get at these meetings that help your Negotiators. Gilakasla goes to Chief Paddy Walkus, Hereditary Chiefs Tom Henderson and Willie Walkus for always being at the Negotiation Table with me to help move us forward in a positive direction.

NEW PRACTICUM STUDENT AT HEALTH & FAMILY SERVICES

LIVING IN THE SOLUTION

The Child & Family Services team is happy to announce that we have a Practicum Student from the University of Victoria with us from May 14th to approximately the middle of August. Her name is Stevie Niebergal and she is from the School of Social Work. She will be learning about how to work with Aboriginal communities such as ours around. Stevie is from the North Island, having grown up in Port McNeill. She is in her final year of classes and is excited about this opportunity to both learn and contribute to the community.

You may see Stevie with Maggie, Eleanor, Laura or other members of our team. She has agreed to and signed our Oath of Confidentiality and will be attending meetings with our staff to learn about how we support and plan with community members. Anything she learns about will be kept confidential; however, if you do not want her present then you have the right to request she not be in a meeting with you. Our staff will explain this when she is with them and give you the option of having her present or not. She has much to offer and hopes to learn from this experience as well.

As an Intergenerational Survivor of the Indian Residential School experience I inherit a legacy of chronic social conditions resulting from colonial oppression and hatred. Part of my responsibility is to develop the capacity to reconcile each instance of lingering memory that interferes with the well-being of the present moment.

My first experience of reconciliation occurred at the first national Truth and Reconciliation event in Winnipeg June 16 – 19, 2010. Indian Residential School survivors from across the country travelled to Winnipeg to participate in the historic event. Indian Residential School survivors could share their personal experience privately in a private statement gathering room, or publicly in the commissioners sharing circles.

Intergenerational survivors had the opportunity to share their experience in each of these venues, especially to share on the behalf of parents that have died before being able to contribute to history.

I became increasingly aware of how surprised Indian Residential School survivors were upon entering a public environment to share their truth, especially ones who had kept such truths so private for decades. I worried about how prepared survivors were at home on Vancouver Island to participate in the Canada Truth and Reconciliation Commission when it started happening in British Columbia? When I returned home I made it my goal to contribute as much as I could to helping Indian Residential School survivors, Intergenerational survivors, and non-First Nations people to participate in Truth and Reconciliation events when they asked for help. Since2010, to the best of my ability, I’ve worked with the Coast Salish, Kwakwaka’wakw, and Nuu-chahnulth Nations as we familiarize ourselves with what it means to participate in reconciliation. It is a growing process that takes time and open-mindedness. The truths are as diverse as the communities.

At least twenty-two countries around the world have had truth commissions. “These truth commissions have been quite diverse: they have varied in size, budget, and, most importantly, in goals, aspirations, and mandate,” says Louise Bickford, PhD from the Political Science Faculty at McGill University. The Canada Truth and Reconciliation Commission was created as part of the Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement. The goals of the mandate are defined as part of an overall

holistic and comprehensive response to the Indian Residential School legacy…a sincere indication and acknowledgement of the injustices and harms experienced by Aboriginal people and the need for continued healing. This is a profound commitment to establishing new relationships embedded in mutual recognition and respect that will forge a brighter future.

The truth of our common experiences will help set our spirits free and pave the way to reconciliation.

I experience reconciliation when an Indian Residential School survivor decides to speak about their experience with their family, spouse, and sometimes their children.

They care about developing emotional support networks with traditional cultural support people, counselors and therapists, and attend treatment center programs. They participate in community gatherings and practice working through the natural imperfections that are the result of colonization, and speak about each other from a place of compassion. Through all of this realize that the memories are never going to go away or disappear, but hopefully find something that works to move from deep pain to self-empowered choices.

Crafting new relationships out of old oppressoroppressed relationships is difficult and depends on the willingness of each survivor. Each person can agree to working towards reconciling traumatic histories, or disagree because the past cannot be undone, with a multitude of options in between both choices.

In exceptional instances survivors have committed to sharing what has worked for them and continue to find new ways of coping that are neither right or wrong when compared to the ways of coping that others use.

So what are we reconciling about the Indian Residential School experience? Memory and the way we remember plays a central role in the process. The way I see it is that it is not an effort to erase history, but an effort to help us find a way to remember from a place of power.

The word survivance is an evolution of the word survivor. When you are a survivor you live in the “effect” of other peoples actions, or the result of their power. An option is to live from a place of survivance, where you have the option to speak about and correct the action of others, and correct the balance of power.

I am sad to have left Vancouver Island, but I am aware that I have had an experience with the Coast Salish, Kwakwaka’wakw, and Nuu-chah-nulth that no other person my age has had the privilege of experiencing. I see the process as an evolution in oral history. I have heard incredibly honest life experiences that are not influenced by the inclination to polish it up for the purpose of a cultural presentation. Each story I heard comes from someone I understand to be my teacher, and I know it is impossible for me to understand on my own, but because of this experience I have my own understanding of where I come from, reasons now for why we live the way we live, and without a doubt know that our culture exists today because of the courage small children had to face the demons that entered our world.

At times First Nations people remember as individuals, and other times as part of a nation, and in the Truth and Reconciliation process both can happen simultaneously.

People bring forward whatever version of the truth belongs to them. Through this process First Nations people across Canada reform an understanding of our national identity. It is not the final version of our truth, but it contributes to a growing understanding of the truth. How would truth evolve if we kept it to ourselves?

What has reconciliation looked like on Vancouver Island?

For two and a half years I have watched both First Nations and Non-First Nations people come together to work towards reconciling their truth with the truth of others. To me it resembles the complexity of creating a potlatch. Entire families and communities need to be involved to make it happen. Coordinators and heads of family each bring something different from their oral history. Each person that attends walks away with a different version of what the outcomes were. The art of reconciliation is impacted by whether or not we see the possibility of change in how we see ourselves, how we see our families, communities, and the Non-First Nations people we live our lives out with.

Check the Band Membership List (posted at the Band Office) to see if you are registered to vote. Contact Sandra Charlie, Membership Clerk, at (250) 949-8131 with questions about band membership.

WHEN YOU ARRIVE: 1.

Go to the registration desk and sign-in with your ID (If you don’t have ID, there will be people at the Registration Desk to vouch for your identity) 2.

You will receive a numbered orange card which represents your vote 3.

Once 25% of voting Band Members arrive (and this is doublechecked) the Electoral Officer will start the meeting DURING THE VOTE: 1.

You will get a chance to hear about proposals and ask questions before the Electoral Officer calls the vote 2.

Then you go back to the registration desk with your orange card 3.

At the registration desk you will sign-in again and trade your orange card for your ballot 4.

You will write !or " to vote yes or no for the proposal in a secret ballot (any other marks besides !or "will void your ballot) AFTER YOU VOTE: 1.

CALL FOR CATERING BIDS The Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Trust Committee is holding an all-band meeting at the Wakas Hall on May 31, 2012.

We are inviting Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw community members to submit bids for catering this meeting (soup, bannock, fruit, pre-dinner snacks and beverages) for 300 people.

Successful bidders must have FoodSafe and previous experience catering for groups of this size.

• A proposed menu!

• A budget!

The budget must include: • Cost of food and all required supplies, including dishes!

• Cost of labour to prepare, serve, and clean-up!
