NAKWAKTO RAPIDS TOURS SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHED! This past weekend marked the first two Nakwakto Rapids Tours, the latest Economic Development venture from the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Nations.

Skipper Angela Smith (who is training Gwa'sala'Nakwaxda'xw members to be skippers) took out boatloads of guests from the local tourism businesses, and local communities. Thanks to the great weather and some of the fastest tides of the year, the trips were a huge success, and the abundance of wildlife was the cherry on top! (check out Angela’s pics from the trip) From now until the end of September tours are available every day. Departure times depend on the tides, and some of the tours are sunset dinner cruises or sunrise cruises! The trips are 4-5 hours long and cost $100 per person. There is a washroom on board the boat, and snacks and beverages are provided to guests.

It is important these tours reflect the history and culture of the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Nations.

Dorothy Henderson and Elisha Taylor-Child have been hired as this year’s tour guides, serving guests and sharing stories about the our Nations and home lands. There are also videos shown on board the boat, including a welcome from Sally Bruce, descendant of Chief Johnny Nolie.

Silena George is managing this shop, and they really need Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw art pieces to sell. Please get in touch with Silena if you have some traditional art to sell.

Many people have been working very hard to see these businesses get off the ground. While it hasn’t always been smooth sailing, it is great to see the efforts of Conrad and others pay off, and it will be exciting to see what the future holds!

THE TLA’AMIN (SLIAMMON) NATION CITIZENS GO TO THE POLLS TO VOTE ON THEIR TREATY TODAY

Treaty negotiations with the governments of Canada and BC were concluded on June 9, 2010 when the Sliammon completed the final stage of the six stages of negotiations. On October 21, 2011, the three parties initialed the Final Agreement. Today, the Final Agreement is to be voted on, or ratified by the citizens.

Today, members of the Sliammon Nation are going to the polls to decide whether or not they should have a treaty. The Sliammon Treaty Society has been working for 20 years to negotiate and to bring to the people something that they believe in. The following are statements from Chief Clint Williams and Vern Pielle, President of Sliammon Treaty Society.

“We are at a cross-road in our history. Our choice is whether we will continue to struggle for our rights and survival under the colonial system of the Indian Act that has suppressed and oppressed us for more than 150 years – or if we take advantage of the immediate opportunities available to us under treaty.

The treaty will allow us to once again access and have a say throughout our territories and to have full and direct control over our treaty lands and resources. It would provide us with significant additional financial and natural resources with which to dismantle that colonial system and allow us to rebuild our Nation based on our vision of being healthy, self-governing stewards of our lands and resources. It will enable us to work towards continuing to improve the quality of our lives for present and future generations.”

PARENTING WORKSHOP REPORT

being raised as children, and their ideas about how children can grow up to be happy and healthy. Collectively, we generated a list of good parenting practices under four headings: 1. Nurture a sense of self-worth in children

Why is parenting a key issue for GN?

2. Discipline to teach right from wrong 3. Care for yourself so you can care for your children

GN has a young and rapidly growing population.

More than 50% of community members are under the age of 20 and there are over 70 babies and small children (under 5) on the reserve alone. Children and those who raise children are valued, and GN wishes to be “a community that raises happy, healthy children and passes good parenting skills to future generations” (CCP).

Many grandparents and other family members are involved in raising children. However, parenting remains a challenging and sometimes isolating task, particularly for single parents, teen parents and those with several children.

Many children are in foster homes and parents often struggle to regain and keep their kids in their own care.

4. Stay connected to your culture To capture and celebrate these good practices, I then created a large drawing that incorporates the above four statements. The drawing was displayed in the back of the Hall at the Healing Feast in March, and many GN children added to the drawing and helped to paint it. The painting has now been completed and will hopefully be displayed at the Trust All-Band Meeting on July 18th. Please come and check it out!

What more can be done to help GN parents with their parenting?

What did we learn from the parenting workshops last fall?

I was lucky to be able to convene a series of workshops on the topic of parenting on Tsulquate last Oct/Nov. We had two sessions for grandparents and three sessions for parents held at the Elders Centre, as well as two sessions with the youth at Eke Me Xi. In total, 25 community members took part.

The workshops had an open format and often functioned as sharing circles. The elders spoke about growing up in the old times, and shared their knowledge of good parenting practices.

Young parents reflected on these lessons, then built on them with their own stories of parenting struggles and successes, exchanging tips and ideas. The youth talked about their experiences PAGE 5

Following the workshops I interview participants and relevant GN staff to identify what would be the best next steps. What I found was that GN parents are looking for opportunities to support each other (parenting circles) and to learn about parenting (skill development classes). However, staff are hesitant to organize such programs because in the past attendance has been so low.

One idea put forward was to create a Parents Committee that can work with families, staff, and band council to make sure parenting programs are customized to the parents’ needs, and address barriers to participation. This idea needs volunteer champions. Are you one?

Check the Band Membership List (posted at the Band Office) to see if you are registered to vote. Contact Sandra Charlie, Membership Clerk, at (250) 949-8131 with questions about band membership.

WHEN YOU ARRIVE: 1.

Go to the registration desk and sign-in with your ID (If you don’t have ID, there will be people at the Registration Desk to vouch for your identity) 2.

You will receive a numbered orange card which represents your vote 3.

Once 25% of voting Band Members arrive (and this is doublechecked) the Electoral Officer will start the meeting DURING THE VOTE: 1.

You will get a chance to hear about proposals and ask questions before the Electoral Officer calls the vote 2.
