Treaty Update Hello Community Members. Remembering…
It has been a very emotional time for all this past week as we mourned the loss of our colleague, friend, and family member. Last Friday I was in awe of how the family and community remembered her and celebrated the contributions she made to this community over the past 30 years. “Bunny, we will always remember your smile and the bounty of love you gave and may we always remember to live your legacy…” Communications
Last year our leaders and Hereditary Chiefs gathered at the Elders Centre for the purpose of treaty planning and communications. At that time they instructed our treaty office to host Family Meetings. It is felt that in this way more members will attend because there may be a higher comfort level to have PAGE 4
GWA’SALA-’NAKWAXDA’XW NATIONS YO! NEWS
treaty related talks among family. Today we begin to hold family meetings to help our people further understand the Treaty Process as well as to get updated on the most recent treaty negotiation activities. Hereditary Chief Willie Walkus has communicated with his family and today we will have our first meeting at 2:00 pm. Commonly Asked Questions about Treaty Q. Are we ready for Self Government? A. Under treaty, everything our government does must be consistent with the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Nations *Constitution, and the laws that our Government will make. Our constitution will say we must manage our financial affairs according to Gwa’sala‘Nakwaxda’xw Nations Laws. We must be open, transparent, accountable, effective and efficient. We must plan for the future, and create trusts that 30/ 10 /2013
protect our money. There will be annual financial audits, regular budgets and borrowing and loan guarantees. A treaty government will be more accountable to the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw people and less reliant on ANCI (INAC). Our Government will be better able to respond to the needs of our community. Citizens may challenge any decisions not consistent with the Constitution, including financial management. [*Constitution – We held Treaty Advisory Council Meetings from 2010 – 2011 and during that time we worked on a draft Constitution. There is more work to be done to complete this – it is hoped that future Family Meetings will offer opportunity for input.] Meetings Two weeks ago I attended a Chief Negotiators Meeting at the Musqueam Cultural Centre in the Musqueam Community in Vancouver. During these meetings Chief Negotiators take time to share information about how negotiations are going in their
PAGE 5
GWA’SALA-’NAKWAXDA’XW NATIONS YO! NEWS
respective communities, including negotiations with the governments. Also there is a report on the “Principals Meetings”, these are high level meetings where representatives of all BC First Nations meet with reps from government to find solutions on several key issues such as, Certainty, Fisheries, Tax/Fiscal matters, Negotiation Loans, etc. ‘Certainty’ is a critical issue where progress is being made. The Government representatives are now prepared to recommend to their higher bosses that they move the word “extinguishment “ out of negotiations. This means that any rights and title that are not in treaty will continue to exist after a treaty has been implemented. Contact Please contact me if you would like further information on the above or other treaty issues where you have concerns or questions. To make contact, call our Band Office and Bernadine will connect you to the Treaty Office. Gila’kasla.

Food Security & Nutrition Update
The Good Food Box Program
The Good Food Box is a nonprofit program for families and individuals who want to purchase good quality, fresh and healthy produce at a lower price than shopping at grocery stores. The boxes are paid for by community members a week in advance, produce is purchased in bulk from the grocer, volunteers sort and pack the boxes and then the boxes can be picked up at a central location on the reserve. The boxes can be purchased on a weekly basis. The cost of the box is $10 and payment must be received a week before the boxes are picked up. The money will be used to PAGE 6
GWA’SALA-’NAKWAXDA’XW NATIONS YO! NEWS
purchase the produce that will go into the boxes. Because the produce is being purchased in bulk, your $10 will go further than it would in the grocery store. An important component for the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Good Food Box will be the traditional/wild foods component. Youth Volunteers will harvest seasonal wild foods when they are available. The food harvested will be a free component of the good food box. This will serve to teach youth how to harvest and prepare traditional/wild foods, and also to provide community members with traditional and wild foods, which are both nutritious and delicious! Also included in the boxes will be recipes showing how to cook with the produce in the good food box. A cooking 30/ 10 /2013
demonstration using the good food box produce will be held each week and will be available to view on Youtube for reference at a later date. A sample of what a good food box would contain is listed below:

according to what’s in season. Participants will get a chance to provide feedback about their boxes and changes will be made accordingly. Initially there will be only one size of good food box, if participants want a bigger box, we will look at providing more options in the future. Also, not every box will contain a traditional/wild food component, these will be provided when the youth volunteers have had a chance to harvest and prepare them.

It’s important to note that not every box will be the same. Produce will be purchased PAGE 7
