Yo Wiksas?

This brings me great pleasure to announce that I, Silena George, am back to work in the office as the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Elder's Coordinator! That was a long year and a half off. I started last week November 4th. We have had numerous meets & greets already!

With plenty more to come. Our Elder's Day Program will continue Monday November 18/13 from 9am-4pm! I look forward to seeing all you Elders there! We also have a trip coming up. We, the Elders, are planning on attending the KDC Assembly meeting next month. We will begin walking club immediately. I am working with other staff as a team to better meet all of the Elders needs. If you have anything you would like us to help you with, please feel free to call me at the Elder's building 250 949 7406. I am getting back into the swing in full force here. Ecdev Update Hello from the ecdev department!! I would like to update you on a specific project that you might have been hearing about. There has been a request of Chief and Council to lease the old Quonset site to build a store and develop a couple other things.

This request was met by Chief and Council with excitement and a general agreement that it sounded good for the community. Chief and Council then asked Les Taylor to look into what it would take to have this project get off the ground. Les then contacted me to see what the process was, I indicated to Les that Chief and Council had agreed with a “New business engagement protocol” that every new business wanting to work with the GNN would have to go through- this included businesses wanting to lease property from the Nations. The idea behind this protocol was for the Band office to gather as much information as possible to help Chief and Council to make their decisions on projects. We don’t want to see the Nations get into any business arraignments that might bring harm or financial hardship to the community. Chief and Council have something called “fiduciary responsibility” which basically means that they have to find out as much PAGE 3

information and decide if the risk is something the community can handle.

The second major part of this project is taking something of extreme value to the community (LAND) and lease it to a community member and his non community partner. While it is an exciting thing to have a noncommunity member want to invest into the community it is also Chiefs and Councils responsibility to ensure that in the event that the partnership doesn’t work or the project ends that the property will remain in control of Chief and Council with respect to their fiduciary responsibility.

I am currently working with the community member who brought this project forward to help him through the process.

Did You Know Did you know- That GNN has a 5 year economic development plan?

Did you know- That the call out list has provided employment to over 35 Band members over the last 6 months?

Did you know- That the GNN now own 3 vessels, and all of them need to be renamed? Geordie Girl III, Hook Tender and Tranquilizer.

Did you know- That all of the vessels are commercial vessels and you have to have all of the required qualifications and go through our in-house training program to be able to be on the insurance in order to operate them?

Did you know- That GNN Marine Services has been in operation for over a year?

Did you know- That our tourism operations belong to a number of tourism organizations?

Aboriginal Tourism British Columbia (ATBC), Vancouver Island North Tourism, Destination BC Did you know- That GNN has a float camp? It is currently being rented out to a forestry operation.

Did you know- That the GNN is close to having its own economic development corporation?

Did you know- That having a strong and active economic development corporation is one of the building blocks for our future generations?

Did you know- The GNN economic development department works with Eke Me-Xi and High school to encourage our kids to gain experience in the work force?

Did you know- That we are looking closely at a few businesses on the North Island to invest in?

Did you know- That we are working on a strategy to identify the different educational requirements to fulfill our employment needs for the next 5, 10, 15 years Did you know- That we have the largest number of future workers on the whole North Island?

The GNN Guardian Watchmen season is winding down with the winter weather rolling in more frequently now. Recent events within the program, we sent two of our watchmen to undergo further training up in Prince Rupert for two weeks. Two separate modules were taken in Price Rupert.

The first week of training was an environmental resource seminar.

Where all the watchmen who were there for training sat down with various companys and groups from up and down the coast. This included groups such as the WWF, DFO, Park Rangers, T/buck, Conservation Officers, GEM, and also some Guardian Watchmen from the northern Nations. All groups who in different ways helped protect the environment on the coast of BC. This proved to be one of the most successful training modules we have taken so far. It allowed the Watchmen group to sit down with the leaders of every group and learn about what makes each of there programs successful and what problems they face and how they have delt with them. Great information for our own in house program. The second week of training was Environmental Monitoring for construction projects.

new construction projects that happen in sensitive areas and monitoring finished projects/deactivated projects.

One module remains in the 7 module Environmental Stewardship training program provided through VIU. Scheduled for mid February in Port Hardy the last module will cover small motor repair and last 5 days.

Gnn Marine Services Short update on GNN Marine Services.

Our new hire (Adam Munn) from early this year has been doing very well and is heading into his first winter as a full time skipper. Winter time on the north island is the testing ground for most skippers on the north island due to the rough waters and high winds, but with early winter storms and big seas already here our new skipper has already been tested and has plenty of experience.

We also had the honor of taking a crew from GNN out to camp. It was also proud time as it was a band employee driving a band crew into stay at the band owned float camp. Which we were quite happy to be apart of.

Public Works Update Nov.14, 2013 Garbage bins: Just a reminder to keep the garbage bins closed and clipped. If we work together on keeping the bins locked we shouldn’t have any bear problems.

Please remember not to throw anything that has an electric cord into the bins, the Band gets charged double the fee when these are found at the landfill.

When you have any items with an electric cord, let me know and I can take them to the Return It Centre. I will also take away any appliances that you might have.

Streetlights: If you see any streetlights burnout, contact me or notify the Band Office and I can get in touch with BC Hydro to get it replaced.

Emergency planning: We have regular scheduled meetings every first Thursday of the month at Wakas Hall, 10-11am.

CHILDREN & SELF-ESTEEM

Know that these children are at risk of becoming stressed out or developing mental health problems.

Self-confidence and self-esteem sound alike but are not. Self-confidence is knowing what your abilities are while self-esteem is a person’s opinion of themselves. Self-esteem begins at birth and continues to be developed to adulthood. It gets harder to build a person’s self-esteem once he/she reaches adulthood.

And a child with a healthy self-esteem:

Children with a good self-esteem know their strengths and weaknesses and feel pretty good about themselves and they generally have an easier time dealing with conflict and resisting negative pressures. These children seem to enjoy life, they smile more, think more realistically, and are more optimistic.

     

How can you help your child?

1. Use your words carefully. Praise their efforts and accomplishments 2. Be truthful to them when it comes to sports or other activities that require some skills. They may not have the necessary skills to be successful in what they are pursuing. So, help them to appreciate what they can do.

3. Don’t put yourself down if there is something you can’t do – children will learn this behaviour and will mimic it 4. Know what accurate and inaccurate beliefs are and correct them. For example: a child generally does well in school except for one or two subjects and they berate themselves over it...calling themselves stupid. You can say “it doesn’t mean you’re stupid because you can’t do math; you’ll just need to spend more time on it and I can help you.”

While children with low self-esteem see life as more challenging and feel frustrated a lot more which causes a lot of anxiety in their lives. They have a hard time finding solutions to problems and often say things like “I’m no good” and “I can’t do anything right.” They seem passive, withdrawn, and depressed and respond to new challenges with “I can’t.”

Recognizing a child with low self-esteem:  Says “I’m stupid”  Says “I’ll never learn this”  Says “Why bother? No one cares about me anyways”  Gives up easily or waits for someone else to do something  See temporary setbacks as permanent and intolerable and feel pessimistic about it

Are comfortable in social settings Is able to work well in either groups or by themselves They don’t get mad or berate themselves if they don’t understand something They will work to find solutions to their problems They know their strengths and weaknesses and accepts both They are generally optimistic

CHILDREN & SELF-ESTEEM

Children  Need to try things on their own  Make their choices, work on those choices, and be responsible for the choices they have made  Let them experience both success and failure  Ask them to help you even if they are only toddlers. This allows them to build their self-esteem by allowing them to demonstrate their competence and giving them a feeling that their contribution is valuable  Encourage them to follow their interests and stick with those interests  Allow them to experience the struggle. This gives them an opportunity to see what went wrong and what they can do differently next time  Make sure that they are at a level of ability that allows them to have some success  Let your child know that you love them and it isn’t because they are good at something  Be inventive on how you give praise o Give them stars to reward their efforts o Let them “hear” when you are praising their efforts to someone. They’ll feel good without being in a spotlight  Make them feel special without giving them a feeling that they are better than everyone else  Teach them to set goals, work towards those goals, and have pride in their accomplishments  Tell them to try and try again. Do it the way they want, face their challenges and take risks

5. Be spontaneous with your affection.

Give your child random hugs and tell them that you love them and are proud of who they are. Don’t overdo it though or your child’s ego can become overinflated and they’ll think themselves better than everyone else.

6. Create a safe and loving home. People who fight and criticize each other’s repeatedly in front of their children may increase a child’s chance of developing low self-esteem because they feel they have no control over their environment and feel helpless or depressed.

7. Watch for signs that a child is being abused by others, has problems at school, or doesn’t get along with their peers. Encourage your child to talk to you or someone when they need help solving problems that are too big for them.

8. Avoid calling your child “emotional” or “dramatic.” Give positive, accurate feedback. Acknowledge their feelings; reward the choices they make, and encourage them to make the right choice again next time.

Over-praising? (Today’s Parent)     

Overly praising your child can be more harmful than helpful It may make them think they’re so good that they don’t need to try any more Or, make them think that they have to be perfect every time…which is impossible They learn that too much praise is like lying and they won’t believe what you say to them any more They are being set up for failure
