Elders update Hello everyone My heart goes out to the family, friends of Vivian Paul. Our community stands strong together in heart felt losses such as these. Mayaxala one another <3 A little update on what has been happening here with our Elders: I brought granny Sarah & Richard down to Courtenay for a check up appointment. She seems to be healing very well from laser treatment. I shall be taking her back down in two weeks times. We have had one or two Elder's Council meetings in the last little while. A few of those members were away so it may seem like we haven't had a meeting for quite some time now. Please be patient. We will resume back to normal next week.

We hope this excites you Elders! :D It will definitely be something to look forward to. I will be away Monday. So again, NO ELDER'S DAY :( Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. We will resume Monday November 17.

The Elder's Halloween party was held here at the Elder's Center Friday the day of Halloween. We only had about 6 or 7 Elders show up. But that's ok. We still had lots of fun. We dressed up, had a nice big spread of food, played games and the Elders won prizes.

I have been keeping up to date with accounting and book keeping for the time being. As well as helping when I can where I am needed with services and such. I have also been meeting and talking on the phone with the Elder's workers from Quatsino & Fort Rupert. We will be joining together with the other nations and having Tri-Band Elder's luncheons on a regular basis.

CHRISTMAS PLANS!!!!!! They are in progress! I need all of you Elders (60&up) to contact me if you would like to participate in the Elder's Christmas trip. Yes, I said trip. They will be going to Campbell River to do their very own Christmas shop. For those that won't be making it, I will shop for your gift for you while we are down there. We have aimed for December 5th to depart early in the morning by bus in case road conditions are bad & for safety of vehicles. It is better this way. We will only be bringing 1 emergency vehicle and that will be mine. We will return Saturday December 6th. Please be safe and have a great weekend everyone. Know that you are loved and you are worth it <3

Also a huge thank you to Johnson, Melissa & Chelsey for helping with the Halloween party. I couldn't have done it without you! My hats off to you all Silena George, Elder's Coordinator

I’m going to push this website again because I think it is the most amazing site for recipe ideas out there.

Good Food Bag Recipes

Give it a try! http://www.tastespotting.com

November 7th, 2014

In the upper right hand corner there is a search option – type in cabbage.

Hello everyone, I just wanted to let everyone know that this Good Food Bag will be my last as I am moving on to a different endeavor. I would like to say that I enjoyed keeping the Good Food Bag Program going and have met so many wonderful people along the way. Thank you for sharing ideas, recipes and kind words of encouragement throughout my time here. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you want to keep sharing recipes or want to keep in touch, my email will remain the same  Good luck everyone with eating healthy and trying new things. Don’t forget to encourage others and share ideas. Our best strengths come from within but we are also motivated to stay strong from being supported and inspired by others.

Michelle Beaulieu, Food Security & Nutrition Coordinator michellehelenebeaulieu@hotmail.com You may have noticed that this time of the year (winter) is when some vegetables and other items become more expensive and you may find yourself buying the same thing over and over because it’s affordable. The reality is….you are being smart, eating what is in season….you just might need a bit of creativity to not get bored of your meals!

PAGE 3

See how many ideas there are! You can do this search with anything….try carrot (voilà! So many ideas). Remember when you are looking at a recipe you may see items you don’t know, don’t like, can’t get, or can’t afford. Don’t sweat it! You can “tweak” any recipe - search substitutions on the Internet, this will give you some flexibility. Tips for searching for recipe ideas: 1. Start with ingredients you already have such as meat and vegetables. 2. Try to keep to what is in season. 3. Google or use http://www.tastespotting.com or other recipe search engines to type in your ingredients you already have (ex. Broccoli). 4. Take a few minutes and skim some different recipes…. find any that appeals to you? 5. ALWAYS think of the healthier options (see previous GFB recipe tips) – which oils are better? Which cooking method is healthier? Which ingredients will help balance me (too much carbs, gluten, sugars etc.), brown instead of white etc. 6. Go ahead try something new! You might just surprise yourself 

4. Mix chopped onion, red pepper flakes, grated carrot, minced ginger, chopped mushrooms, cooked rice, cilantro, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil and uncooked ground pork. Combine until blended well. 5. Place a spoonful of the meat mixture into the cabbage leaf. Roll leaf starting with the stem end. Place seam side down on a baking dish. 6. Mix hoisin and water and drizzle over cabbage rolls. 7. Bake for 30min making sure the pork is cooked.

Main Dish: Asian Stuffed Cabbage Rolls

Alternatives to the Cabbage Roll:

Ingredients: 

1 tbsp sesame oil

2 tablespoons ginger, minced

3 garlic cloves, minced

4-6 mushrooms, thinly sliced

Ground pork

1 cup cooked rice

1 large carrot, shredded

1 onion, chopped

¼ cup cilantro, chopped

a pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)

1 tbsp soy sauce

1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar

1 large head cabbage, leaves separated and cooked until just soft

¼ cup hoisin sauce

2 tablespoons water

Stuffed Peppers, baked Kale Wraps, baked Swiss Chard Wraps, crispy Lettuce boats!!

LETTUCE WRAPS

STUFFED PEPPERS

To Prepare: 1. Cut end off the cabbage, peel away each cabbage leaf and steam the leaves until just softened (unless you think they are soft enough to fold already – then you can skip this step). Set aside. 2. Cook 1 cup rice. 3. Pre-heat oven to 375oF PAGE 4

BAKED KALE WRAPS

The recipe for the Cabbage wraps can be substituted for the above (everything in the recipe stays the same just the cabbage changes). Enjoy ;)

Side Dish (Optional):

Spinach Stuffed Mushrooms

Ingredients:       

Mushrooms, stems removed Spinach cooked or chopped fine. 2-3 cloves Garlic, minced Cheese (goat or grated mozzarella or cream cheese) Crab (optional) ½ onion, minced Basil

To Prepare: 1. Carefully remove mushroom caps, place caps upside down on a baking dish. Bake @ 375 for 5 min (this will allow the juices to drain). 2. Mix spinach, garlic, onion, basil and softened (or grated) cheese. Adding crab is a delicious delight!

PAGE 5

GWA’SALA-’NAKWAXDA’XW NATIONS YO! NEWS

3. Spoon the mixture into the mushroom caps. 4. Bake for 15min @ 375oF. 5. Let cool before eating because the cheese will be hot!

YO! JOB TRAINING AD GIS Technician Training Natural Resources Department Band Office Wage:

$12/hr to start

Deadline to Apply:

November 20th, 2014

Schedule:

35 hrs/week, one-year term (part-time hours may be considered)

Description: Training will be provided on a one-on-one basis to an individual interested in learning Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial data management. We aim to mentor a Band member in building the skills necessary to support staff in the Natural Resources office and elsewhere in spatial data management, map-making, and data/information queries. Projects are likely to involve managing and collecting data for traditional use studies (TUS) and general mapping of data in the Territory. The majority of the work will be office-based. Experience: Experience in PC computers and basic Windows software programs and commands (eg. Opening and closing windows, cut/copy/paste, etc). Ability to trouble-shoot computer problems and a working knowledge of spreadsheets are key assets, but will train the right person. HOW TO APPLY: Bring cover letter and resume to Erin Latham in the Natural Resources Dept of the Band office. Feel free to come in and ask questions before applying if interested. Applicants will be contacted for interviews. Introduction to Erin Hi everyone! My name is Erin Latham and I have just started in the Natural Resources department at the Band office! I’m a PhD candidate from the Geography department at the University of Victoria. I just moved this spring from Alert Bay, and before that was Victoria. I’ve moved around a fair bit, but I’m very happy to be in Port Hardy, and my dog Bodhi seems to love it too! My research involves learning about aquaculture and the various influences that effect its development, and how these effect First Nation’s opportunities to engage both in the industry and its management institutions. Quite a mouthful, I know! The research goals harmonize well with the research goals of the community, and the GNN has outlined specific community-based objectives and outcomes that will involve us talking to community members and other local people about aquaculture. I am fortunate to bring my own research funding, and so you might consider me as an ‘unofficial’ Staff Member at the Band office. Also while I’m here, and when I’m not reading about aquaculture or discussing aquaculture, I will be providing staff support to the Natural Resources department primarily through my geographic information systems (GIS) skills. I will be developing a GIS mentoring program specifically for the GNN which I consider to be more fun than work! I’m looking forward to working with community members of all ages and finding opportunities to teach and learn about the exciting world of GIS and maps! I want to thank you all for welcoming me into your community. I’m grateful to be working here and I look forward to meeting everyone! I am in the Natural Resource office. Feel free to drop by anytime. You can also reach me by email or phone: els.latham@gmail.com, and (250) 902-0550.
