As you all may have heard, our Elder's Center has been yet again broken into & the brand new 58 inch Toshiba flat screen TV was stolen! This is the 3rd theft we have experienced in the last 7 months! It disgusts me & the rest of the community that this keeps happening! What's worse is someone from our very own community is doing this! Police, as well as myself, have been further investigating. We would strongly advise those of you that know something to come forward with any information! Once we catch this guy and your name comes up, that makes you accountable for criminal charges as well! We have a huge list of names of individuals that have been in our Elder's building in the last month. Don't be surprised if police show up at your door asking questions for it is protocol. We have had some information brought forward bringing us that much closer. I thank you to those of you that have been of help in this case. It is greatly appreciated. Thanks to Tony Wong for all his hard work in helping get he security systems set up and running.

With all of this being noted, the Elder's Center is no longer open to the community for functions such as dinners, Birthday, Anniversaries, services, etc. It is only to be used for work purposes during the working hours of 8am-4pm Monday to Friday. No exceptions! This is taken effect immediately and will be for good.

Elder's Fun Day: Monday's starting at 12pm with lunch, 1pm Matt comes in, & 2pm Nutritional Bingo with prizes to be won.

I have started accommodations for the trip to Kamloops to attend Kamloops Powwow August 1-4. We will all be going by bus together. We will also be staying the night in Nanaimo Friday night and continue on to Kamloops Saturday morning.

Please be advised that you MUST help with fundraising 3 different times from now until August in order to be able to come along on the trip. If you are unable to help, please send your grandchild or someone else to help on your behalf.

I would like to take this moment and Thank Lucy Hemphill for all her hard work and dedication she has had working with the Elders. We greatly appreciate you and wish you well on your new journeys. We love you!

GN OPEN HOUSE A SUCCESS! On May 7th we held the second annual GN Community Celebration & Open House, to promote all of the good work that has happened in our community over the last year. The idea for this kind of open house came from thinking about the AGMs of the past, and wondering “how can we get all of the information out, without the negativity of a typical AGM?” so we came up with the booths, so that people can have more time to ask questions or chat one-on-one with staff.

About 80-100 people came throughout the day, playing “booth bingo” to qualify for prizes. Leslie Walkus won the tablet computer, and several other people won prints of old photographs of the home lands and copies of the “How a People Live” DVDs.

In the evening we had a Q&A session with Roy Francis, the Sliammon Chief Negotiator (Sliammon has just signed their treaty). People wrote their questions on “Ask Roy!” papers and we read them out at the front, and Roy answered them. Also, Johnny Henderson Sr. and Doug Johnny Sr. made a short presentation and asked some questions as well. There were a lot of great questions asked during that whole session and we will be devoting a Yo! News article to answering them in the near future.

prize draws, giving away many more prints and posters and DVDs. The grand prize winner, for attending the TRM meetings this spring, is Ellen Paul! Ellen has won a trip to Vancouver for two, plus hotel and $500 spending money! After the prize draws we had dinner and showed some of the Eke Me-xi short films. A HUGE thank you to everyone who helped out – to Linda Paul for organizing, Jessie Hemphill for organizing and facilitating, the Regional District of Mt. Waddington for lending us the dividers, Conrad Browne for your help organizing, Wade Charlie for the catering, Roy Francis for travelling up to Port Hardy to join us, all of the staff and contractors who ran a booth, everyone else who helped out, and of course most of all to all of the community members that came out and took part.

Some of the things happening next with Treaty are: the dock is going in at Ba’as in June, we did get funding to start some of the same kinds of meetings to talk about Gwa’sala territory (Takush, Wyclees and Nekite) and this week Council has been down in Campbell River doing some governance training that we set up. We will keep you posted on all this and more, stay tuned!

Farewells and New Beginnings Today, Friday May 16th is my last day of working for the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Band. I’m getting married on May 31st, then travelling to Indonesia for three months, then Moving to Vancouver to attend University at UBC. I’ve worked for the Band for many years. I started with the Fisheries program, and was lucky enough to spend every summer for 5 years in Nekite. Then I moved to the Finance Office, as Margaret’s Assistant. I worked there on and off between college and travelling from 2007 to 2013.

In September 2013 the Food Security & Nutrition Program was created with the aim of helping Community Members eat healthier, by making wholesome food more accessible/affordable and by revitalizing traditional food practices.

The work that I’ve done with the community through the Food & Nutrition Program has been very important to me, and has inspired me to go to University to get my degree in Nutrition and become a Dietician. I realize how important it is for Dieticians to have an understanding of the role traditional foods play in a healthy diet/lifestyle, and I would like to do more work in this area.

Traditional foods are healthy foods and they’re free. Not only that, but the act of harvesting and preparing them is good for our body, mind and soul. Feeling depressed? Pick some berries.

Feeling sad? Try fishing. I guarantee you’ll feel better, just ask your gran or grandpa. It was my dream to revitalize traditional foods practices, and it’s a HUGE reason why we started this program. We’ve done some work in this area, and will continue to do more work. I believe traditional foods and medicines are an important part of our identity and culture, and to lose the knowledge about them would be a tragedy.

Michelle Beaulieu will be replacing me as the Food Security & Nutrition Coordinator. She has many strengths especially in the area of food security, wild foods and gardening. She also has a lot of experience in managing projects and applying for grants. In fact she has more experience in all these areas than I do, so she just might do a better job than me . I’m very excited about the future of the Food Security & Nutrition Program.

I consider myself blessed to have spent so much time with our Elders. There are no other people in this world like them. They are strong, wise, resilient, kind, loving, and good-natured. To top it all off they are humble. The lessons I’ve learned from them are ones I will carry through my life. The love and support they’ve shown me through the entirety of the Food Security & Nutrition Program has been so important in the success of the program.

Here are some things that I learned from our Elders: 







Respect. No matter what your past is, or the past of others, we need to respect each other. Don’t judge others. If you don’t respect yourself, you will be unhappy.

Love. Surround yourself with those you love. Do nice things for them, it will make you happy. But also, remember to love yourself.

Instead of pulling down others that are doing well, lift them up and support them.

Let their success make you happy. The success of our community is success for us. We are all connected.

Take pride in your appearance and your home. What you represent on the outside is a reflection of how you feel on the inside. This applies to the whole reserve.

If you litter and don’t respect nature, than you do not respect yourself.

These may not seem to have much to do with food and nutrition, but I feel it’s all connected.

I am thankful to Matt Martin, for having the bright idea to start the community garden and Good Food Bag program in the first place, and also for having the faith in me to make it happen.

I’m thankful to Margaret Bernard, Finance Manager, who taught me so much in the Finance Office, and then had the grace to let me go so I could focus my energy on the Food & Nutrition Program. I’m also thankful to my mom, Colleen Hemphill for supporting my work and being a good role model. Thank you to Silena and the Elders for their support, and thank you to Andrea Walkus, Colleen George and Chelsey Walkus for helping with the Good Food Bags.

Memorize Mamakla Matt Martin's Magnificent May Monkey Mayhem Memo:

I just wanted to take some time to thank Lucy Hemphill for the fabulous work she did in her role as Food Security & Nutrition Coordinator. As many, if not all of you know, Lucy has been working officially in this capacity since September 2013. What many people do not know, however, is that for a long time before that (probably a year, if not longer) Lucy was working many hours for free, in her spare time, for the betterment of the community and for the advancement of Food Security and Nutrition issues. Without her spending those many hours there would not be, amongst other things, a $25,000 Food Pavillion, there would not be the start of a community garden, there would not be a Good Food Bag program, and there would not be a Food Security & Nutrition Coordinator position at all.

Since starting the job as the Food Security & Nutrition Coordinator, Lucy has essentially single-handedly created successful programs that previously did not exist. What is impressive about that is often the hardest part of a challenge is just getting it up off the ground and started- all of the big and little details and processes have to be worked out. Lucy went about her work with a quiet efficiency, and the result of her hard work was real, tangible, results - we can definitely say that because of her this community is a better place than it was before.

In life we learn from each other. I know Lucy spoke a lot about all of the things she has learned from everyone in the community (and from the elders in particular). Similarly, I think we have things we can learn from her. I think she proved, without any doubt, that there are a lot of great ideas kicking around within the heads of community members, and from a good idea a goal can be developed, brought forward, built upon, and realized. Of course it takes help along the way – and in this case there was a lot of help and support from Chief and Council, the band manager, coworkers, and Health & Family Services staffbut really what she did is an example of grassroots community building. I encourage community members to use her as an example, along with the many other amazing role models in the community, to not be afraid to bring forth a good idea – you never know where it might lead to.

Anyway… I promised Mess I wasn’t going to do this….

Lucy, Thanks for all of your hard work and good luck with your next adventure!

Protect our Land & Sea. Help stop the Pipelines & Oil Tankers

Right now our government is trying to force through the Enbridge Pipeline. Which would increase oil tanker traffic on our coast, which would GREATLY increase the risk of oil spills. If the pipeline is to go through, it’s not a matter of “if” an oil spill will happen it’s a matter of “when.” If an oil spill happened off our coast our way of life would be destroyed, and many of the traditional foods we love would be gone.

Teleopthalmology Clinic

Of 32 people booked for the teleopthalmology clinic, 20 showed for their appointment.

Of the 12 that couldn’t make their appointments, , 2 had work obligations, 2 were sick, and 3 were out of town.

We also had 6 new appointments and 4 showed for their appointments -1 had school obligations.

We have 11 clients who have been on the teleopthalmology client list that haven’t yet been seen. Of those, 3 haven’t been seen since 2011 and 4 haven’t been seen since 2012. I hope to see these people to see if they want to remain on the list to see the teleopthalmologist in the future.

Why would anyone want to see a teleopthalmologist?

If they have diabetes, if they had an eye injury, or, if they see ”floaters” in their eyes.

Floaters are black specks in your vision or flashes of light and to see if there has been any damage if you have diabetes.

Some complications of diabetes include cataracts, glaucoma, or diabetic retinopathy.  A cataract is a clouding of your lens and things look blurry. Your lens is made mostly of water and protein and the protein is arranged in such a way that the lens is clear and PAGE 14

light can pass through. As people get older, that protein may start clumping and clouds part of the lens. www.nei.nih.gov/cataracts  There are different glaucoma: o Open angle glaucoma is most common and there are no early warning signs of this glaucoma. It develops slowly; sight loss is, a lot of times, unnoticeable.

Peripheral vision is first to go. There are no other signs but a person can maintain good vision by having regular check-ups and these check-ups may help this glaucoma be detected sooner – preventing further vision loss. You can go blind if this is untreated. www.glaucoma.org o Angle-Closure glaucoma is very rare. It develops quickly and the person affected must seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms include:  Hazy or blurred vision  Appearance of rainbow-coloured circles around bright lights  Severe eye and head pain  Nausea and vomiting (along with severe eye pain)  Sudden sight loss  Damage occurs right away.  This disease is caused by blocked drainage canals in the eye resulting in a sudden rise in intraocular pressure  Diabetic retinopathy is damage to blood vessels in the retina. Blood vessels may swell and leak fluid. In some people, abnormal new blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina. Stages of diabetic retinopathy: o Mild nonproliferative retinopathy – microneurysms may occur. They’re small areas of balloon-like swelling in the retina’s tiny blood vessels. o Moderate nonproliferative retinopathy – some blood vessels that nourish the retina are blocked o Severe nonproliferative retinopathy – many more blood vessels are blocked depriving several areas of the retina of their blood supply. These areas of the retina send signals to the body to grow new blood vessels for nourishment o Proliferative retinopathy – at this advances stage, signals are sent by the retina to grow new blood vessels for nourishment. These new blood vessels are fragile and abnormal. They grow along the retina and along the surface of the clear vitreous gel that fills the inside of the eye. By themselves they don’t cause vision loss but they have fragile walls and these walls leak blood then severe vision loss and, even, blindness can occur. When fluid leaks in the center of the macula (where sharp, straight-ahead vision occurs), it could make the macula swell causing blurry vision. This is called “macula edema.” This can happen at any time, but, most often, it occurs as the disease progresses. www.nei.nih.gov
