Dear Community Members, We are writing to you to introduce the k’awat'si Economic Development Corporation (KEDC). While some of you may have already heard about this organization in the community through friends or family, we are relatively new. The KEDC was created as a result of strong community desire to grow opportunities that will bring in revenue, prosperity, skills and development to the community. The KEDC is a distinct entity that reports directly to the Chief and Council. Over the course of the next month, we hope that you’ll have time to answer a few questions about your understanding of the KEDC and the best ways we can communicate with you. We want to understand how the community has come to know about the organization, what they believe it does within the community, and how people hope to communicate with the KEDC. Some of you may have answered a quick survey at our community holiday event, if you did so already, thank you. If you have time over the holiday, please click on the link below – or visit the Gwa'sala'Nakwaxda'xw Facebook page where this link will also be posted – where we will ask you a few short questions about KEDC and how you want to hear from us. Once you complete the survey we will enter you into a contest to win round trip flights to Vancouver and tickets to a Canucks game. The draw will take place early in January 2015.

Season's greetings to everyone from the Treaty Office!
Treaty's main role in 2014 was to continue negotiations with the federal and provincial governments. For years our Treaty team have pushed to get government to put something real on the table - to make a realistic and genuine offer to our community in compensation for their taking our land. They finally made their first offer on Nov 27 at the community meeting. That offer was soundly rejected by the community. In spite of struggles like those Treaty will continue to work toward helping our people return to the homelands. Treaty has focused in other ways to help build community during 2014... We applied for grant funding to study 6000 hectares in our traditional territories to see how community members might earn a living from their homelands. Three community members worked with Forestry technicians to look at various uses for our forests, including non-timber forest products such as harvestable plants, scenic trails, wildlife viewing, etc. This work will continue early in 2015. Treaty arranged another TRM study where community members told us what their interests were for living in the homelands. What do families need to live off the lands and seas once again? We learned that many young people want to live in the Homelands, at least for a time, and that they would like to have Elders with them to teach about how they lived there before Relocation. Everyone agreed that having docks to tie up boats was essential for our people to get back to our winter villages. So, Treaty acquired funds to have docks built at Ba'as and Takush which included preparing both those sites for further development in the near future. Many of our community members worked under tough living conditions to contribute to those projects. Today, both villages have a covered shelter, trails and stairs for any of our people wishing to camp - for clam digging, fishing, seaweed gathering or other purposes. We plan to build a board walks and a larger dwelling for more people to come and experience the way we were and will be again. Much more will planned together with community for our territories in the future. While work was being done in the homelands, the Treaty Office supported local projects with Health and Family Services and Capital Planning. With Sandra, Willie, and Matt we hired Lucy to help design a program to improve nutritional and traditional food requirements for our Elders and other interested community members. In the new year we will be bringing Chelsey on board to work with the Elder Coordinator, Silena to insure this successful program continues. The “good food bag” has been a welcome addition to the community as many enthusiastic parents try to serve healthy nutritional food to their families at lower cost than the local grocery store offers. The Treaty Office also worked with Capital Planner, Leo, to help build the upcoming smoke house, which will be ready for the next fishing season. Treaty supports the Elders Program, including the Elder Coordinator position, and the five member Elder Council. The elected Elder Council made up of Alfred (Bird) Rufus, Willie Walkus, Mary Henderson, Mary V. Walkus and Betty Walkus have played an important role on behalf of our Elders to insure their needs are met. Treaty supports Silena as she works on travel, recreation and social programs and events – all funded through their own initiatives, and through Trust. PAGE 3

This past summer the Elders said they wanted a deck attached to the Elders Building, so Treaty hired Ernie and his crew of Alvin and others and in a short while they had a lovely deck! On hot summer days the Elders will be able to bask in the sun while looking out across the way. Our carpenters did a great job and made sure the deck is wheelchair accessible. Up to 35 people can gather to picnic on it!
Treaty facilitated together with many Elders, interested community members and Council members with formation of our Bighouse Society, made up of individuals working to find a way to build our long awaited Bighouse. The Society will help get grant money to build the Bighouse. Many dedicated individuals spoke at planning meetings helping move us towards our community's dream. We now have a crew, working with GN's Kawawaci Economic Development Corp planning on how to start building. If you are interested in being part of this momentous project please attend the next Bighouse dinner meeting on Jan 12, 2014 at the Elders center to be updated on activities and plans.
2014 was called the Year of Reconciliation - the powerful documentary about our history - “How a People Live” - has helped tell the world the history of our Elders and families. For the first time, people, universities, colleges, social agencies, health agencies, have found our story has helped them understand all first nations people. Our people, especially Elders, give other communities hope and inspiration as we move towards reconciliation and a better quality of life.
The GN Treaty Office has had a very busy 2014. It is exciting to see and hear our people speak out on issues of concern as we saw at the Community Meeting on Nov 27, and at the recent Charlie Family Treaty Meeting on Dec 11. It is exciting to know we are moving toward the dreams spoken of by our Elders. There is much to do as we strive to regain a better life for everyone. The recent 50 Year Tsulquate Reflection/ Celebration was an incredible event…the honesty and hope expressed by community strengthens us all every day in our work.
Gilakasla! to all the organizers, helpers, staff, contractors, elders and leaders who make all of these important events happen. They show so much foresight, dedication and commitment for a better future for our young and old! All of you community members who come out to listen and help give direction at the meetings make a huge contribution – keep doing this! You will be heard and your hopes and dreams will become reality!
Merry Christmas to All of YOU and a Happy New Year!! From our Treaty Team to you!
