YO!

ELDERS UPDATE Yo I hope all is well with everyone! I have been putting out newsletter submissions as well as notices to remind everyone about activities. We have been experiencing poor numbers in attendance for everything. Bread making last week... nobody showed up. Elders day programs only 8 elders have been showing up. I need you as elders to participate in ALL the activities or the other parties we invite will no longer join us! We had a catering job yesterday. Mary & Ernie have been the only 2 helping me cook. Remember our contract with Trust, where all of our funding came from, does state: in order to keep getting more funding in the future, we MUST continue to fundraise. There will be NO trip this year for us if everyone does not start participating! I do understand everyone gets busy, ill, or tired. Lets it least make an effort for successful programs :)

2014 Treaty Projects Gila'kasla! Over the years we have heard many people talk about reviving our traditional village sites so that we could more easily spend time there, even extended periods of time. We have also heard people talk about wanting to create more tourism opportunities in our home lands, as well as getting a better idea of what resources we have out there. This year, we are going to tackle these issues through three TRM projects! You probably remember that every so often the Treaty office gets some funding to do a project, called a Treaty Related Measure or TRM. This year we are working on three TRMs:

1. Reconstructing Ba'as The goal of this project is to work with leadership and community members to develop a plan, including conceptual drawings, for rebuilding Ba'as, potentially with some kind of tourism attraction. Part of this project will also be to build a dock at Ba'as so that community members, including elders, can access the village more easily. 2. Ba'as Lands Plan The goal of this project is to create a detailed plan for how we could use the lands around Ba'as after Treaty. This project will include a timber cruise, community survey work about potential uses for the land, and creating a plan based on community input that shows potential areas for homes, recreation, businesses, etc. PAGE 4

GWA’SALA-’NAKWAXDA’XW NATIONS YO! NEWS

3. Strategic Forests Management Plan The goal of this project is to get a better understanding of commercial forestry potential within our home lands, while also looking at non-timber forest values, and identifying areas that could be logged in the short, medium, and long-term. It will also look at partnership opportunities and work opportunities for GN members. Although the projects this year focus mainly on Ba'as, we are hoping to do similar projects for Takush and other areas within the Gwa'sala and 'Nakwaxda'xw home lands in the near future. It is very important that we have as much community involvement as possible in these projects. In the next few months there will be at least 3 community events where you will have a chance to learn more, share your input, and ask questions. There will also be community surveys.

The first community event will be a dinner meeting on February 6 to talk about rebuilding the village of Ba'as so that it can once more become a place to live and work. One of the speakers at this meeting will be Judith Bosire from the Sauder School of Business at UBC. She will be there to help us develop a plan to start new tourist related businesses and to talk about training and employment for our members. Stay tuned for more detailed information about the time and place of this meeting. If you have questions or comments please contact the Treaty Office at 949-8424 Colleen Hemphill, Chief Negotiator

Good Food Box Update

Hi Everyone,

Wow the time is flying, I can’t believe it’s almost February already! On the next page you’ll find a calendar with the Good Food Box payment and pickup dates. Please note that though pickup is normally on a Friday, we’ve changed the 14th pickup day to Wednesday the 12th. We changed it because Friday is a Valentines day AND it’s the Friday before a long weekend. Even though the pickup date has changed, Payment is still due on the Friday before.

On the last Good Food Box Friday I had the help of Colleen George, Andrea Walkus and Silena George. We had lots of fun, and it was much easier and quicker than when I pack the bags on my own. They will be helping every GFB Friday, which means that more people can join the program. Right now on average 20-22 people get a GFB every second week. The bag includes fresh produce, healthy recipes, and ingredients for the recipes. Sometimes produce from the GN Community Garden, or traditional foods are included when they are available. Everyone who has had a GFB loves it. If you’re not sure if the GFB is right for you feel free to ask me questions, or talk to someone who does get a GFB.

We just created a GFB Facebook Page. We will upload healthy recipes, info, updates and pictures. It’s a great way to stay connected, so if you want to join the page you can search for “Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Good Food Box Program” On Facebook. Something exciting that you can look forward to is that Andrea and I are going to start doing Healthy Cooking Classes on Good Food Box Pickup days, so keep an eye out for updates on that.

Keep well everyone,

Lucy Hemphill, Food Security & Nutrition Coordinator 1-250-230-2707 lucyhemphill7@gmail.com
