This summer was a blast. It went by so fast. I sure enjoyed my time with the kids. Our activities we did included going to the field, going to the hall and walks we have done games, movies and a few things such as going to beaver lake and whale watching at telegraph cove. We were also able to have mad science camp come for four days. I have defiantly made me some awesome friend (the kids) they sure are amazing, funny, caring and respectful. If I could do this job again I would do it in a heat beat. Very memorable with some awesome co-workers Veronica, Thomas & George.

Working with children and people in general has been the greatest opportunity in my life. To work with 3 great co-workers and to make awesome memories with the kids. I hope to be working for the Gwa’salaNakwaxda’xw band again in the future as a registered nurse.

We did various activities. Going to the hall, the field a couple parks in town. We also played man hunt and capture the flag I had a lot of fun. I also had the opportunity to work alongside three great people.

These past two summers have been great! We had so much fun with the kids and I hope they had fun with us. We did so much activities that helped us connect with each other, which was great. What I liked doing most with the kids was everything! Because even though some of the kids weren’t able to participate because they didn’t know how to play a board game, card game, or outdoor games. We all helped out and made sure no one was left out and tought them the best we can and for all that just makes me happy and more that they are happy. So to that I say thank you for allowing me to work with these amazing children and 3 awesome co-workers.

Kamloops just before dinner. We settled in then headed straight off to the Pow wow grounds. It was very hot & humid over there. We arrived and all kind of sat spread out from each other as the Arbour was jam packed. Our fantastic helpers were prompt with getting everything the Elders needed.

Yo Wiksas?

Well, the summer has came & went. It was fun & eventful for our G&N Elders. I returned back Monday from being off for a couple of weeks.

As you all may already know, the Elder's went to the Kamloopa Pow Wow.

August 1st & returned on the 5th. The bus arrived to pick us up Friday morning. We were on our way to Nanaimo for the night. We headed onto Kamloops bright & early Saturday morning. At this time, Bob was asked to drive the vehicle that came with us in case of emergency. Being the trooper Bob is, he gladly did so. Thanks Bob & Cathy. While we were on our journeys to Kamloops, the bus blew a tire.

This was a minor set back. Luckily for us, we were just outside Hope. So the bus had to get the tire fixed.

He dropped us all off at a Library, which was closed.

But the recreation center had air conditioning. A few of the Elders felt ambitious & walked down to the town Diner to have a snack. The tire was fixed and we were well on our way. We arrived to our hotel in PAGE 3

We sat and enjoyed the Pow wow until late around 11pm that night. There were so many vendors & food booths. It was awesome! Everyone had a grand old time. The next morning we took our time eating breakfast downstairs of our hotel. The Pow wow resumed at lunch time. We headed there a bit earlier so we could get seats. It was amazing to see everyone sit & watch the dances. It was 35 degrees there through out the day.

Such troopers our Elders are! We left to a nice cool restaurant to have dinner. Then half of the Elders went to their hotel room to rest for the night, as the rest went back to the Pow wow.

It was about 11pm again the second night when we all headed back to the hotel. We sleep. We left bright and early to North Van for the Elders to go shopping (tax free;) and have lunch. We enjoyed a few hours there before we had headed to the ferry. The bus driver was amazing. Thanks John (from Smith Transportation Ltd). We headed back to the same hotel in Nanaimo and crashed there. The Travelodge in Nanaimo is excellent. Great customer service, big rooms, big comfy beds, air conditioning. Highly recommend you stay there if you are staying in Nanaimo for the night. By the next morning, everyone was eager to get home to our fish. We stopped in Campbell River on our way home to grab a bite and some jars. We were on our way and arrived home with warm welcoming by the end of the day on Tuesday. We had great volunteers giving Elders rides home with their luggage. Thanks guys!

Our trip to the Kamloopa Pow wow was amazing. I know I will be taking my family to it next year. The Elders had a blast. A couple bumps in our journeys, but hey... that's to be expected right? A great big huge thank you to our helpers: Dodie Rufus, Conrad Anderson, Cathy & Bob Swain. With out you guys, I don't know what we would have done. I salute you all. I would also like to thank Eileen Rufus & Marylynn Henderson for being such a big help with Quorbin! My heart was filled with so much warmth seeing everyone working together as a team on the entire trip. Way to go everybody! I look forward to the next journey.

Which brings me onward to my next topic. The Elders have finally received their first half of their grant from Trust! Now we can really start food harvesting & going on more adventures! We will be going crabbing very soon. Hunting season opens in a couple of weeks. Elders: Please don't hesitate to let me know if you would like to come along on any of the food harvesting adventures. I have cleared our freezers for what ever we catch.

The food fish fever came and went. It was an awesome experience! Gilakasla Chief & Council! I had a great processing team. We worked on fish for 4 days (some did for a week). We were able to get granny Sara's, Vivian & Janet's fish jarred for them.

When I returned to work this past Monday, I canned nearly 5 cases for our Elders Center. I am very pleased with the turn out. Now the Elders have fish for every function they may need it for at home and at their building.

That's all for now ladies & gents. I hope you have a great long weekend. I will be meeting with other organizers/supervisors from other surrounding programs & schools to set up lunches, tea times, etc. with students & youth from our community. Stay tuned for updates.

August 15st, 2014 Good Food Bag Recipes Hello everyone, Wow, is the Good Food Bag ever growing!! We have 33 people signed up to receive a GFB, the most yet  Keep telling people about the GFB and hopefully we’ll get a few more new people included.

Remember; don’t be afraid to provide feedback too.

I’d really like to know if people like the recipes, if they are easy to follow or too complicated, suggestions around communication etc.

Have a wonderful weekend  Michelle Food Security & Nutrition Coordinator 250-949-0144 (cell) michellehelenebeaulieu@hotmail.com Main Dish: Chicken Broccoli Quinoa Bake Quinoa is definitely getting the reputation for being a super grain…for very good reasons (some listed below). If you haven’t tried it yet, here’s your chance!

It is gluten free It contains almost twice as much fiber than other grains It’s one of the most protein rich foods containing all the 9 essential amino acids.

It contains iron, lysine, magnesium, riboflavin and manganese (all sorts of vitamins and minerals) Benefits from these ranges from increasing brain function, essential for tissue growth/repair, promotes healthy blood sugar control, helps prevent heart disease by reducing high blood pressure and lowers cholesterol.

Ingredients for the Casserole: Chicken Broccoli (cut small) Spinach cut into small stripes 5-6 mushrooms sliced (more if you like mushrooms!)

2-3 cloves of garlic, minced 1 cup uncooked quinoa 1 cup milk (can substitute almond milk) 2 cups chicken broth (add seasoning provided to 2 cups of water) Black pepper to taste Fresh Basil (or 1-2 tbsp dried) ½ cup flour 1-2 cups water (additional to the chicken broth) ½ cup Cheese (of your choice)

Did you know that Goat cheese contains less lactose than regular cheese, which may make it easier for people to digest if they have sensitivities to dairy.

Try Goat Feta (also has less salt than regular feta) or Goat Mozzarella.

To prepare: Preheat oven to 400oF In a saucepan bring the chicken broth, ½ cup milk to a low boil.

In a bowl, whisk the flour, and ½ cup milk until it is a smooth creamy mixture. Add this to the boiling liquid and set aside.

Grease baking dish.

In a large baking dish, add the sauce from step 3, 1-cup water, quinoa, chicken, mushrooms and broccoli (cut up small) and garlic. Bake for 30 min.

Check the casserole and stir every 15 minutes adding additional water if needed. It should be a creamy consistency.

Once everything is cooked, top with cheese and bake until cheese is just melted.

Side Dish: Garden Salad Garden salads are great because you can toss in whatever vegetables (or fruit, nuts etc) you have and voila, you have a delicious healthy salad.

What’s not so easy is the dressing as they can sneak in a lot of unhealthy fats and sugars into your diet.

The easiest dressing you could do is oil and vinegar (as long as the oils are the good kind such as olive oil). Add any kind of berries for a delicious taste. The best kind of berries are the ones you’ve picked yourself…lucky us, it’s berry-picking season 

Ingredients for the salad: Lettuce, rinsed, dried and cut into bite size pieces 1-2 Carrots, shredded 1-2 beets, shredded Peppers cut into bite size pieces Ingredients for the dressing: 1/4 cup Olive Oil 1/8 cup Balsamic Vinegar Handful of Blackberries (or huckleberries, thimbleberries – any other kind of berry) To prepare: Mash the blackberries in a bowl or cup; add olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Stir until blended.

Add all salad ingredients to a bowl and top with the dressing, toss until salad is coated.

Changes & Updates The Good Food Bag Program

Changes are to help with improving communication and address some of the challenges that have been experienced to date.

Provide the $10.00 at the time of signing up, no exceptions. This is so we can have all Good Food Bags financially accounted for before they are ordered.

Sign-up cut off will be the Tuesday (4pm) before the GFB. The order is made Wednesday morning (see attached Schedule).

Pick-up is at the Elders Building every second Friday before 4pm (unless otherwise indicated) Doors close at 4.

Unfortunately there is no food storage space therefore if someone does not show up for his or her GFB it will be sold to someone else. If this happens more than twice you will have to be taken off the list so we don’t waste food. People not showing up to pick up their GFB is the #1 challenge – Last GFB Friday, 16 people did not show up, including some that were spoken to one the phone that Friday.

If you are unsure if you are on the GFB list you can view the list at the Band Office.

As a member of the senior management team this position also provides policy advice to enhance the overall management of the Gwa’sala‘Nakwaxda’xw Nations and its various departments and programs. It is also responsible for dissemination of sensitive information, development of new or improved office systems and procedures. An important assignment of this position is taking minutes for Chief and Council and other meetings as required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:        

Receives and screens information, visitors and phone calls.

Provides information and refers requests to the appropriate individual.

Files and retrieves corporate documents, records and reports Manages the correspondence control system for the band manager’s office by ensuring documents/calls /requests received are tracked, processed, action taken, or delegated to appropriate managers.

Produces sensitive material relating to managerial decisions within the band manager’s office.

Prepares office correspondence, briefing packages and presentations and ensures quality control of all documents and materials.

Maintains schedules; coordinates meetings and makes travel arrangements for Chief and Council.

Maintains office equipment and office supplies.

REQUIREMENTS:        

Minimum 2 years experience working with and supporting senior staff and executive level management.

Ability to exercise sound judgment in setting priorities and dealing with confidential and sensitive information.

Minimum grade 12 with a certificate in Office Administration or other relevant degree.

Initiative and time-management skills to work with minimal supervision.

Ability to work in a fast paced environment and interact with administration staff and Council.

Excellent interpersonal skills, professionalism and integrity.

Excellent MS Office computer skills, Mac operating system, Power Point and Excel.

Demonstrated leadership skills.
