Council Update What’s Happening With The CCP? The CCP is not over. Jessie took a long leave of absence, but is now back. The goal is still to finish the CCP by the end of the year. Also, Silena will most likely be kept on until the end of the project, so you can talk to her about the CCP as well.

What’s a CCP Again? CCP stands for Comprehensive Community Plan. A CCP is a plan for reaching the community’s goals. We have been working on our CCP since May, 2008. So far we have had many planning meetings to find out how community members feel about our community, things they would like to change, and things they would like to keep the same. We have also done other projects, like the CCP DVD and the photo project. Now we are taking all of the notes, from meetings and questionnaires and interviews, and writing it all down into draft plans. When this draft is finished, we will bring it to the community (including staff and leadership) to make sure that it really is the community’s goals and vision, and that the plans seem realistic. After bringing the draft to the community, re-writing anything that needs to be changed, and bringing it back to the community, we will have a finished CCP!

Grants We got two of the grants that Jessie applied for. One will pay for 2 community members to do work like mapping trails in Tsulquate, noting areas that need fixing up, doing some trail clearing, and talking to community members about their transportation needs. Their work will go into the CCP. The other grant will pay for a Recreation Development Coordinator, who will organize recreational activities for community members of all ages (like hikes, trips to the pool, etc.) and who will talk to staff and community members to figure out ways to improve the recreation situation in our community. Their work will also go into the CCP.

S.C.A.R.P. Two students from the University of British Columbia’s School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) have moved to Port Hardy. Their names are Jeet Chand and Johanna Mazur. They will each be doing a project that will benefit the CCP and will help Jessie with some of her work. Jessie, Jeet and Johanna have moved into the Fisheries Office temporarily. Jeet Chand Other SCARP students and staff are also helping with the CCP. For example, Stephanie Manson (another student) is helping to create the Comprehensive Community Plan by going through the minutes, questionnaire results, etc. and organizing them. The partnership with SCARP was discussed at two CCP Advisory Committee meetings this year, and community members who were there were strongly in favour of this partnership and the benefits it could have for the CCP and our community.
