Thinking about a new Career? Why not Aquaculture?

If you currently live on Vancouver Island and are thinking about your future career choice, or if you’re thinking of a career change, you may want to consider aquaculture. According to Don McRae, the Minister of Agriculture, aquaculture is a half-billion dollar industry in British Columbia, and it is anticipated that this sector will see continued growth as we move into the future, which translates into future opportunities for skilled individuals.

So what exactly is aquaculture? Aquaculture is the farming of fish, aquatic plants, molluscs, and crustaceans in controlled environments of fresh or salt water. These products are grown in earthen pods, freshwater lakes and bays, or in the open ocean, where they are fed and cared for to ensure that they are of a fine quality and healthy. The fish or plants are monitored to ensure they reach an appropriate size after which they are harvested, processed, and shipped to market. This includes working on Net Pen fish farms, in local and government hatcheries, and also working in shellfish operations.
