Billy WIlliams Memorial Soccer Tournament This past Saturday and Sunday Jack Walkus and family hosted the Billy Williams Memorial Indoor Soccer Tournament at the Wa’kas Hall. PVS came in first, with Weesa-Gee coming in second. Colin Smith, goalie for Weesa-Gee, was named MVP for his quick moves in net. Corey Swain won the ‘fastest kick’ competition, with 115 kmh. A lot of fun was had by all, with players coming from here, Kingcome, Alert Bay, Fort Rupert and Quatsino. Thanks, Jack & Family, for hosting the tournament!

From the Band Manager’s Desk Please be advised that the Bye-Election for ONE councilor will begin on November 5, 2010. As you probable aware there is one seat available due to the recent passing of one of our councilors. All Election Regulations will apply and the term will be for 19 months. The bye-election will take place at the Adult Education Building (Eke Me-xi) Nominations Meeting: November 5, 2010 – between 6:00pm – 8:00pm Advance Poll: November 19, 2010 – 6:00pm – 9:00pm Election: December 4, 2010 – 8:00am – 8:00pm As many of you are aware elk meat has been delivered two times now. The last delivery to households was on Saturday, October 23rd, 2010. If you were not at home and did not receive any elk meat and want to have some, please contact Les @ the band office (9498343). The recent delivery was the traditional food gathering by the Campbell River Indian Band on behalf of the Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw Band. A very special thanks is given to the Campbell River Indian Band for assisting us with the elk meat for our community. Daylight savings is coming up on November 7th (fall back one hour). Daylight savings is a good time of year to make sure your smoke alarms and extinguishers are fully operational. It could save lives!!! I would like to have the fall clean-up of the reserve fairly soon so please keep your eyes open for announcements. Two previous council meetings did not occur because not enough councillors showed up. The last council meeting was not scheduled for Wednesday because I was away and there were some council members not in town. The next scheduled meeting is this Wednesday @ 10AM at the Band Office. Your elected leaders need to ensure they attend all council meetings, as it is very hard to keep things moving along for the community. Decisions have to be made and discussed. There are policies in place for non-attendance at scheduled council meetings. I will be bringing those to our next council meeting for action. I’m very excited about our new web site coming on-line very soon. Once our site is up and running it is hoped you will visit the site often and give us feed back as to it’s content. We are trying to make it user friendly. It will be at www.gwanak.info.

Public Works Update WATER SAFETY Chlorine level this week is 0.74. Safe chlorine levels are 0.00 to 1.00. When the chlorine level doesn’t register or is above 1.00 I then notify Epcor and they will then adjust the chlorine in our water system. This is a program sponsored by Indian Affairs and Health Canada to make sure that all First Nation communities have safe drinking water.
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS MEETINGS We had four community members that attended the Oct. 21 meeting. It was suggested that we will meet every Thursday at the GN Youth Centre from 1-2 to get started on our emergency plan. They are Irene, Karla, Bunny and Cathy. The meeting is open for anyone who wants to help out. Bob Swain, Public Works

Jack o’ Lanterns originated in Ireland where people placed candles in hollowed-out turnips to keep away spirits and ghosts on the Samhain holiday. The ancient Celts thought that spirits and ghosts roamed the countryside on Halloween night. They began wearing masks and costumes to avoid being recognized as human. Q: How do you fix a jack-o-lantern? A: With a pumpkin patch.

Elders Update Monday & Thursdays from 1-4pm is drop in exercise. As well as HUGE REMINDER THE ELDER’S FLU VACCINATIONS CLINIC WILL BE THURSDAY OCT.28th FROM 9-11AM @ THE ELDER’S CENTRE. It is strongly advised that ALL Elder’s get their flu shots as it is that time of year again. Friday Oct.29 will be the Elder’s Halloween Party from 1pm-whenever everyone is partied out! NO CHILDREN allowed to this event, so please make care giving arrangements for your grand/children if you happen to have them on this day. :) ~ Gilakasla Silena George, Elders Coordinator
Kingcome Relief Fund On September 25th and 26th the Dzawada'enuxw First Nation of Kingcome Inlet, BC suffered considerable damage due to flooding. The Kingcome River flooded its banks and caused severe devastation to the village infrastructure and homes. This was a result of the torrential downpour of rain leading up to the weekend experienced in the North Vancouver Island region. The Dzawada'enuxw First Nation community is in need of financial support to provide assistance to community members who have been displaced from their homes. A Kingcome Flood relief fund has been established by Dzawada'enuxw First Nation. New Minister of Aboriginal Relations Barry Penner Replaces George Abbott On October 25 Premier Gordon Campbell announced changes to his cabinet. The Hon. Barry Penner replaces George Abbott as the new Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation. Minister Penner previously served as the Minister of Environment and Minister responsible for Water Stewardship and Sustainable Communities. He was reappointed as Minister of Environment in June 2009. Raised in Chilliwack, Minister Penner studied political science and economics at Simon Fraser University to earn his bachelor of arts degree. He later earned his law degree from the University of Victoria. A former park ranger and sawmill worker, Minister Penner also worked as a B.C. legislative intern in Victoria. In 1991, he worked for an international law firm in Bangkok, Thailand and later practiced law in Chilliwack until his election in 1996. Minister Penner was appointed by Premier Campbell as the co-chair of B.C.’s Alternative Energy and Power Technology Task Force in April 2005. He is keenly interested in renewable energy and conservation technologies. He previously served as parliamentary secretary to the government house leader, as chair of the Government Caucus Committee on Natural Resources, and was a member of the Legislature’s Standing Committee on Crown Corporations. He has also chaired the Legislature’s Select Standing Committee on Parliamentary Reform, Ethical Conduct, Standing Orders and Private Bills, and served as a member of the Legislature’s Select Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs, and the Cabinet Committee for Legislative Review. Halloween Safety • Small children should never carve pumpkins. Instead, let your child draw a face on the pumpkin. • Make your home safe for trick-or-treaters. Remove all objects around the outside of your house that could cause children to trip or fall. Turn your outside light on so children will know they can visit your home. • Keep candles, jack-o-lanterns, matches and lighters in a place that children cannot reach. • Tell your children not to eat any goodies until you see them. Make sure that your child eats dinner before they set out, so they’ll be less tempted to eat their goodies along the way. • It might be a good idea for parents or children to take along a backpack to empty the goodies into if the trick-or-treat bags become too heavy. • Children should stay in well-lit areas and should only visit homes that have their outside lights turned on. Children should never go inside homes or cars. • Children should walk, not run, from house to house and stay on the sidewalk or at the side of the road facing traffic, cross the road at the corner and look both ways before crossing the road. • Children who are not accompanied by an adult are vulnerable to injury, bullying by older children or predators.

Free Family Swim! Tuesdays & Thursdays 11:00 am - 12:00 noon Family Swim is for Parents, Granny, Grandpa, Cousins, Aunties, Uncles, Kids, Tots, Babies to enjoy spending time together in the pool... It’s FREE to go, Eleanor will meet you up at the front desk of the Swimming Pool 15 minutes before the swim so it gives you time to get ready and be in the pool before 11:00. Unfortunately we don’t have a way of transporting/giving rides for everyone as of yet...Once there is more interest and more people going, I will look into getting a bus or van.
