Yo wiksas? Spring is finally here! Which means warmer weather, we hope. The Elder's went to try Japanese food at Toudai Sushi Restaurant. Brian and I did trips to take the Elders out there for Elder's Lunch on Wednesday April 26. We had about 22 Elders rs come out and enjoy the atmosphere and some delicious food. Elder's luncheons have been a hit. We had 28 people come and join us for lunch on Wednesday, May 3. We had Cathy & Shelley were here to encourage everyone to go up and vote at the advanced poll pol that was happening at the Hardy Bay Seniors Centre. They even gave a bunch of Elders rides up. Thank you Cathy & Shelley. We had a few guests at the last Elders luncheon. It is always so nice to see more faces come in and have a nice lunch and visit with h the Elders. They really enjoy your company. So please, keep on coming out. A few reminder dates to remember:
May 15- (Elder 60+) Mother's Day celebration: Please come on out all you Mothers & grandmothers. We will start at 12pm with a light lunch and some crafts after lunch. May 17- Elder's er's Wellness Day in Fort Rupert. We will leave here at 11am. Please call the office if you need a ride. 949-7406. With that being noted, there will not be a regular Elder's luncheon here at the Centre that week. Walking club every Thursday at 1pm at the Elder's Centre. We will start off with the treadmills, then work our way up to walking around town. Swimming? Would anyone like to go swimming? Please let me know and we can arrange it. JUNE 6: NORTH ISLAND ELDER'S NI'NOGAD STARTING AT 9AM WITH BREAKFAS BREAKFAST AND ENDS AT 3PM @ THE PORT HARDY CIVIC CENTRE :) Please call and let me know if you would like to attend as seating is limited for our locals. Membership Clerk Update:
Hello Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Nation! I am happy to say the status cards are still coming in I have done well over 100 cards! Since I have started and yes that is most of the G-N Nation I have done cards for. Now taking names and starting a list, so please call the Band Office to add your name and number. Once I am done making status cards I keep track of all the ones I have made one for. So if you have lost a card I can’t guarantee you will get a card right away. To be fair I will not pick who gets a card I work down the list, if I get no shows I pass the card on to the next person who is waiting for a card. The faster I get these cards made and handed to the ones in need the faster I can order for more. So I want to thank you the Community for all your patience, it was a very slow process but I am getting it done! For anyone asking how long it takes for my cards to come in it all depends who shows and picks up cards right away. Once that is done I put all my paper work together and send off. Please wait for my call, leave the right number, if the number has changed call the band office to let me know right away. Please make sure you have proper I.D, I need two pieces of up to date I.D such as -Birth Certificate -Health Care Card -BCID -Drivers License -Old Status Card -Gun License SIN does not work to get a card. To register a baby, please come see me with the original Birth Certificate. Also need mom and dad to sign the form, reminder that the birth certificate must have both mom and dad’s name on it, otherwise it will get sent back for correction. Anymore question you can give me a call at the office Thank you Bernadine Clayton Receptionist/ Membership Clerk (250) 949-8343

POSTER CONTEST FOR ABORIGINAL YOUTH
Reminder - Submission Deadline May 15, 2017
March 1, 2017 - To celebrate the rich cultural and heritage traditions of BC's aboriginal people, FORED is sponsoring a poster contest with cash prizes for aboriginal youth. The theme is Traditional Knowledge and Medicine.
Poster submissions should illustrate the above theme with artwork and any brief description as required. Three winning entries from aboriginal participants will each collect a $50 prize. If participants work with a partner or group to submit a poster, the partners/group will share the prize. By participating in this contest, winners agree that their names and posters can be published in local media. Winning posters are displayed in Ministry of Education offices in Victoria on Aboriginal Day, June 21st. Winning posters are uploaded to the FORED website and can be viewed at http://www.landscapesmag.com/common/main.cfm?ind=1&sin=1&ssi=0&sss=1
This is a wonderful opportunity to find a mentor in the Elder community to pass down this important knowledge to First Nations youth.
Contest Details:
Deadline for poster submission to FORED BC is May 15, 2017 and must be postmarked by that same date. All posters become the property of FORED BC.
The contest is open to all kids ages 5-18 with Aboriginal or Métis ancestry. Participants must note their name, band affiliation or ancestry, postal address, phone and email address and/or grade, teacher, school, & school postal & email addresses on the back of all posters or in covering emails.
Posters must reflect the theme and can be on any size paper up to 11x17. Any type of artistic medium may be used, i.e. pencil, crayon, paint, mural, collage, computer graphics etc. You may glue or tape any natural textures, including seeds, sweetgrass, flowers, leaves, fur, feathers etc. to the poster with a description on how they are used in relation to traditional knowledge and medicine. Emailed submissions are welcome as long as they are 300 dots per inch resolution and scanned at the actual size. A .jpg or .pdf file is fine.
Due to the large volume of entries received, FORED is not able to return posters. Only winners will be notified.
For any questions on the poster event, please email education@foredbc.org or fax 604-737-8598.

Traditional Knowledge/Medicine Example: Cedar Tree Traditional Uses Medicinal uses for cedar: oils for cleansing and tea for healing. Wet bark can be made into baskets, spoons, strips for baskets and more. The First Nations relied on cedar to be the main source for transportation as they built rafts, canoes, and more. Cedar is used in weapons because it is sturdy and is really strong. It is used in the handle of an ax or an arrow body. The bark of the cedar tree can also be used to make weapons because it can be used to tie the objects together. - submitted by Louise, Boston Bar, BC
FORED BC, short for FOR EDucation about our environment & its natural Resources, is a charitable non-profit association established in 1925. We work with aligned groups and volunteers such as the Spirit Bear Youth Coalition, and the Aboriginal Institute for Management Excellence, on community-based sustainability projects. This poster contest is a component of our AHEAD (Aboriginal Heritage Education and Dialogue) program.
