WELL HELLO EVERYONE! Are you enjoying the nice weather we have been having lately? I sure hope so. As you may have heard, the Elder's have been very busy the last week catering for various occasions. Last week we catered for Trust for their monthly meeting. Then we did an outside cater function up at the Port Hardy Hospital for the ground breaking of the new ward that's going to be built. I have been informed that we came recommended from a reliable source to cater! That's awesome! As you know, the Elders fundraise to do things like go to the Annual Elder's Conference, go on trips to the homelands, have weekly luncheons, exercise, swim, etc. One of the Elder's main Revenue is through catering. The Elder's are also on a health kick. So we cook and serve all healthy meals. Lucy Hemphilll & I prepare and cook every Elder's Day Mondays and make the healthiest meal for them possible. Great job G&N Elders for taking a step towards healthy living! s you all know, Lucy will be leaving by the end of this month. I would like to thank her for all her hard work and dedication she has put into the Nutrition Program, as well as into the Elder's Program! We wish you well on your journeys down the road. We will miss you! Elder's Day is still in action! Please feel free to bring a friend (Elder) from other communities! We will be working towards our Tri Band Elder's Luncheon in the very near future. Every Monday starting at 10am Our next catering job in May 8th for Trust. I need each of you that plan on coming on any trips this summer to help. It is not fair to those that are always helping with fundraising activities. You MUST help it least 3 times from now until the trips in order to be able to come along. So please, be sure to help. If you can't, you can also send someone on your behalf.

Economic Development Update We are coming to the end of the initial information about the basis of the economic development corporation. We will continue to provide updates on the work that is being done and the transition of the Nations businesses to the ecdev corp. Now we are hoping for some help. We are looking for a name for the economic development corporation, it is important that the name is culturally significant, accepted by the Elders and means what our community wants it to mean when representing the ecdev corp for the many years to come. We are providing 5 options below, they are not the only options of course but 5 that we see fitting the criteria mentioned earlier. The spelling and meaning of these words comes directly from the First Voices website and the work done by them on the “Language Legacies” project. Please give these different options some consideration and then let us know which one you like the best, then second best and finally third best. The Sisiutl artwork is a part of the overall “logo” with the name being incorporated into it. Here are the options: k̓awat̕si - [k̓a] (wa) (t̕si) Means- treasure box, painted ḵ̓iḵ̓ed - [ḵ̓i] (ḵ̓ed) Means- Rich, wealthy (To be) dadalut̕ła- [da] (da) (lu) (t̕ła) Means- get or earn money, trying to dalanukw- [da] (la) (nukw) Means- money, has or to have ǥwa'wina- [ǥwa] ('wi) (na) Means- Raven
Once the name has been chosen the artwork and the name will be professionally “finished” and then it will be used on all signage, business cards, letter head etc. Please email Bandreception@gwanak.info with your votes or stop in and see Bernadine. We will also have a booth at the community open house May 7th where you can vote. Gila’kasla and until next time, stay safe!!

News from Lucy Scow Just a reminder to come into the Band office for the call out list and fill out our forms, there are many jobs coming up, there have already been a few people on the list that has gotten a job through the call out list, please if you are on the list already and know that your number isn’t updated please do come in and update it, if you don’t and I try call or text you and you aren’t available I will move to the next person and your name won’t come up until I go through the whole list again. How the list works
I go through the list when a job comes up I follow the list of how it was drawn or in the order you handed me your form. I call you, text, Facebook or email you If declined I won’t come back to you until your name comes up on the list. It will also be reported to Pat for those of you who are social assistance and it will affect your social assistance. There are close to 70 people that have filled out forms I cannot just pick anyone for a job I need to know if they have the experience or interest in the position. Some jobs require licensed drivers this will be the only reason that I would jump the list to find those that have license in the order of course of how they are on the list. Some businesses are requesting qualified workers or specific experience. So I have to look through the list thoroughly to find that specific person. Some jobs are long term and some jobs are short term it isn’t in my control to pick and choose who will be in what position.
If you require more information please do not hesitate to contact me I am more than willing to answer any questions. Call the band office and ask for me Lucy Scow please let the receptionist know it is in regards to the call out list thank you!

In addition, we have been working with MCFD to change the responses to child welfare concerns in the community - this has resulted in a 50% decrease in the numbers of people involved in child protection investigations: 120 100 80 60 40

Notes Not tracked in 2012/13 72% increase in number of counseling appointments Not a significant change A new service focusing on high risk youth 32% increase in people addressing relationship issues 37% increase in contacts for people struggling with issues of finances or housing 38% increase in the amount of advocacy staff are carrying out for clients 12% increase in the number of people supported at court Healing Circle was added near the end of 2012/13 so a straight comparison would be misleading 26% increase in the number of people supported through case conferences
We had 3453 contacts with clients last year. On average, this means that our team of 6 people provided services to 67 people each week - in addition to attending meetings, committees, training opportunities, doing paperwork, and other minor work. A huge accomplishment - my hat's off to the team!
