K’AWAT’SI CONSTRUCTI K’AWAT’SI CONSTRUCTION CO. YO NEWS FALL UPDATE The arrival of fall brings an end to another very busy summer for KCC. We started the summer off by finishing up exterior renovations on ten homes within the village. These renovations included some or all of the following: decks, windows, siding, and roofs. We are just putting the finishing touches on the last two of the four complete renovations (previously boarded up homes). We are very proud of these transformations. These four homes have been renovated to meet our high standards and will be able to be enjoyed by community members for many years to come. The crews are currently working on nine units of new construction, 3 duplexes and 3 ranchers, within the village. All of these homes are nearly completed on the exterior and we are moving on to the interiors. These new homes have been designed and are being built to stand up the wet climate we have here in Port Hardy. The homes all have large roof overhangs, steel roofs, and Hardi plank siding for greater protection from the weather. Inside the homes we are installing air movement control units to help remove moister buildup within the homes. These new homes will look and function great for decades. KCC’s project management team has been working together with with Tohmm Cobban Architecture to finalize construction drawings for the Big House. Once we receive the completed drawings we will be able to complete a full cost estimation for the construction of the Big House. This last summer KCC put together a plan for training and the further development of the skills and knowledge of its employees. To date we have had sessions on: building science, design consideration, indoor air quality, environmental housing, air barrier systems and exterior weather protection. GNN also provided funding for an exterior envelope specialist to come work hands on with our crews to help develop their skills. We would like to thank Leo Lawson for organizing this for us. We at K’awat’si Construction are looking forward to completion of the the new builds and working together with GNN on future projects. We would like to thank all of the community members for their patience and understanding of the inconvenience of multiply crews working within your community. Gila’kasla
