Yo Wiksas! This month has been a bit scattered due to facility rentals and catering jobs. Our next Elder's Fun Day will be this Wednesday, Oct. 1st starting at 12pm with lunch. I have a bunch of games and prizes to mix it up a little bit. Then next week we will go back to our usual Mondays @ 12pm. I have been making jam for the Elders. Please come see me if you haven't gotten to try some yet and I will give you a jar. My next quest is salsa. I will jar some homemade salsa to hand out as well. We tried setting out the crab traps. No luck :( Hopefully we can get our hands on some very soon. We will be going clam digging like I said before. Anyone who wishes to come and help dig for our elders is more than welcome to do so. If anyone has any other food harvesting ideas, please feel free to run it by me.
We have started a step challenge with some of the Elders. If you haven't gotten a digital pedometer (step counter), please come and see me to get one if you'd like to be a part of teh challenge. We have yet to determine the grand prize for the step challenge. Maybe on Wednesday we can decide what that will be.

September 12th, 2014 Good Food Bag Recipes Hello everyone, Just wanted to put another reminder of the changes to the Good Food Bag in the newsletter. Payment is due when you sign up, no exceptions. The cut off for signing up is the Wednesday before the GFB. There will be no home deliveries (except elders that have trouble picking up their GFB). Now lets get back to talking about food‌ While the weather is still very nice, the mornings are getting to be cooler and that means fall is coming shortly. And that means soup time! The best kind of soups are the ones you make yourself, not only can you put whatever you want in them (veggies, meat, herbs etc.), you can also control the amount of salt. Most store bought soups, soup mixes and broths contain higher amounts of salt than if you were to make it yourself. Making your own homemade broth is very rewarding when cooking for yourself, friends or family – it is nourishing, helps fight colds, warms

To Prepare the Salad: Lightly toast pecans by putting them in a pan on medium heat. Stir constantly until pecans are lightly brown. Wash and cut lettuce, put in bowl. Healthier Eating – it’s worth it! 10 Tips on where to start and how to budget…helping to make the change a little less overwhelming
1. Eat in season: Eating in season will not only give you access to the freshest veggies, it will also be easier on your pocket book as in season fruits/vegetables tend to be less expensive than if you were to buy them out of season. See the charts for “In Season Vegetables and Fruits” 2. Read the flyers: Paying attention to grocery store flyers is a great way to save money on meats, fresh veggies/fruits, cheese, yogurt, grains etc. Try to buy items while on sale. Also plan your meals around those sale items. 3. Plan ahead: Plan your meals before you go to the grocery store. This will save you time at the grocery store and you’ll know exactly what ingredients you need because you can take a look in your cupboard before you head to the store. 4. Limit your shopping: Try to limit your shopping for 2-3 meals. Planning ahead and buying less actually saves you from throwing things out. It happens….you load up on lots of fruits and vegetables only to forget about them in your fridge, they end up going bad and that means you wasted healthy food and money. 5. Shop the perimeter of the grocery store: the “outside” aisles of the grocery store generally have the healthiest options such as fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, dairy and meats. Avoid the center aisles where the junk foods and processed foods are. 6. Pay attention to ingredients: Eating healthier means you should be more conscious about what the ingredients are. Here are some things that you should be limiting/eliminating in your diet as they can raise blood sugar, raise bad cholesterol, actually makes you put on weight, increase cravings, and some options are “empty calories – low nutrient value”. a. low-fat foods & low-sugar foods, these substitute to “alternative fats and sugars which can actually be worse for you!! b. cooking oils such as canola, sunflower seed, vegetable, soybean) – choose olive oils, coconut, grape seed soils instead. c. refined sugars (white and brown sugars, pop, candy, sugary cereals.) – choose options that aren’t high in sugar, choose items with honey as the sweetener. PAGE 3
GWA’SALA-’NAKWAXDA’XW NATIONS YO! NEWS
08/29/2014
d. sugar substitutes (aspartame, corn syrups, fructose, glucose etc.). e. artificial dyes and flavors - choose pure extracts, f. high salt content foods (some canned goods) 7. Time to switch: Switch from white breads, white pasta and white rice to brown and whole-wheat options. Sometimes this takes a bit of time because the taste is different. When cooking pasta, try mixing half white and half whole wheat, to help with a gradual transition to 100% whole wheat. 8. Buy Organic: if you can’t buy organic all the time due to the availability of organics at the grocery store or because of the price, you can watch the sales and buy them when you can. 9. Start your own garden: It doesn’t have to be a huge garden, it can be a small container (lettuces, spinach, kale, carrots etc.). Growing your own vegetables ensures that they are organic and can help save money! If your kids aren’t too keen on vegetables than having them help grown their own may change their attitude as it gives a sense of pride and satisfaction of helping provide for their family….not to mention that it’s pretty cool to have grown something you can eat! 10. Recipes: Sometimes coming up with recipes isn’t the easiest but luckily we have the Internet, the good food bag recipes and our friends/family to call up and ask for suggestions and ideas. You don’t have to spend a lot of time cooking; you can make healthy meals that are quick and tasty! a. http://www.tastespotting.com - a fantastic visual website with a million ideas! You can search the recipes using any key word (such as: chicken, thai, greens, carrot, thyme, bake, pizza…. basically anything cooking related you can think of.) Don’t forget that you can pick up the phone or send Michelle an email anytime and ask for suggestions etc.
Hope this helps!
