Yo Wiksas! The summer has come to an end. It is time to start preparing for the colder months ahead. Do you need your chimney cleaned? Please call me at the office and we can arrange to have it cleaned. Why does your chimney get so dirty so quickly? Because the wood you are burning is still green (fresh). When you burn firewood, you need to let it season (dry out) so that the ash doesn’t clog your chimney pipes and become a fire hazard. So be sure to ask where ever you are getting your wood from, that it is seasoned (dry). Western Family Pineapple products with the expiration date August 18, 2017 have been declared contaminated with Hepatitis A. So please make sure to check your pineapple products for the expiration date if they contain any pineapple at all. Elder’s Luncheon- we had a great turn out last week. We had about 30 people show up for lunch. Let’s keep the numbers up. Please feel free to invite any of your elderly friends. We want to make this environment a fun and friendly place for any Elders to come and hang out and enjoy a nice meal together. Fish processing a success! As some of you may have seen, there were a bunch of us processing fish a couple of weeks ago. Brian and I were showing some of our youth and staff how to jar fish. We worked on 50 pink salmon the first day and then the adults did 25 sockeye for the Elder’s Program. Some of the jars from the first day did not seal, so they had to be thrown away. But it is ok. We still have 7 cases from that batch. Constable Starr and Ernie Henderson donated a bunch of pinks they jarred as well. We were able to save 4 cases from the bunch they donated. So we have some fish stored away for future community events. The Elder’s Program is well stocked for the winter as well. Parking: We have been having a lot of people parking in front of the Elder’s Building lately. This is just a friendly reminder that parking in from of the building is for Elders and staff that work in the office. We want to keep the front area clear for when we have Elder’s Luncheons or meetings. It is harder for them to park further away and walk over to the front door than it is for the rest of us. So please remember that before you park your vehicle outside the GNN Elder’s Centre. Thank you. Hydro: Hydro has a new set up now. I have a feeling a lot of people are going to experience some great difficulties with their bills. Here are some pointers on saving some energy and money:

Unplug your appliances when you are not using them: microwave, tv, cell phone charger, hair dryer, toaster. Turn the lights off when you are not in the room. Have your thermostat set to 15 at night. Try not to leave your oven on too long. Do laundry after 7pm Don’t let people plug extension cords to your house if they are in a mobile trailer in your yard. This can cause your breaker to trip. Maternity Leave: Please keep note that my last day of work will be Friday November 3, 2017. I will be off for a year. Stay tuned for the plans as I am off. Elder’s Council meetings: The Elder’s Council has been very busy this past week. They have been very productive in their meetings. Catering: Catering jobs have slowed down a little bit. We still have our regular catering for Trust. Elder’s Health & Safety: If you have a Doctor’s appointment down island, I need a note (the same one you give to Christy) for records. If you could please get these in as soon as you get it, that would be great. If you have an eye doctor appointment, you need to let the receptionist at the front desk of Dr. Eng’s office know that you are an Elder from Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Nations. If you have a prescription that is not covered by FNHA, we need your invoice brought into the office so we can process payment. Please note that Leslie will contact you, via letter, if you are close to your funding cap for the Health & Safety Program. The Health & Safety Program is for all Elders aged 60& up that is on the GNN up to date Elder’s List. It is run on a daily basis by myself & Leslie Walkus. If you need to access funding for things like: home safety equipment (toilet seat, hand rails, pole for beside your bed to help you up), doctor’s appointment down island, emergency medical, eye doctor appointment, dentures. This is when you call myself at the office 949-7406. I will then see if you are eligible to have your request covered by checking with Leslie if you have used up your funding. Please remember that you only get a certain amount that we are hoping to last for another 2 more years. Our Health & Safety Committee members are: Leslie Walkus (Chair), Silena George, Willie Walkus, Leo Lawson & Dean Wilson. That’s it for now, Gilakasla,
