3 Reasons Why Livin’ Your Best Life Depends on Your Health We all know that glamorous friend who always seems to be full of life and possesses an unlimited amount of bubbly and refreshing energy everyday. We love and hate her because she seems to have it all including a glowing skin tone and a head full of healthy hair. She looks great in just about any outfit and is just simply living her best life. She seems almost super human and there’s something about her we just can’t put our finger on… What is she doing that we aren’t doing? We often ask. We think we’ve turned over every stone looking for the answer, but we always overlook the one insight she has about her health. She understands that in order to live her best life, she has to be at the top of her health game. She understands these 3 reasons why we must be more intentional about improving our health: You can’t live your best life when you don’t have enough energy. How many times have you wanted to do something you knew would be an awesome business idea? Or maybe you wanted go to a networking event you knew would lead to some groundbreaking connections, but you just didn’t have the energy to get dressed, do all the makeup and hair and drive across town. When we eat foods that don’t nourish our bodies and support our health, our intentions end up outshining our actions. We want to do one thing, but when the moment comes, we realize our tanks are too depleted and we’re unable to show up as our best self. So we put things on the back burner and then later wonder why our dreams seem forever out of reach.

1.

You can’t develop “best life” strategies when you have brain fog. You need mental clarity and insight to implement out of the box strategies that your best life and your dreams require. The brain is not some separate entity that operates on some unknown alternative fuel. The food you eat or don’t eat directly impacts your brain health. Studies have shown that our diet directly impacts mental health. Depression is not just the result of a chemical imbalance from an unknown source - certain foods regulate those chemicals. It’s no wonder so many of us suffer from depression and anxiety. Good health and well-being includes brain health.

2.

You can’t help yourself or others when you’re sick or in pain. If you’re constantly dealing with one illness or another or you suffer from achy joints, it’s highly unlikely you will feel up to putting in any kind of “best life” work. If your only goal for the day is just to survive the discomfort you’re in, you could care less about your dreams. Doctors have determined that certain foods have inflammatory properties that cause the body to attack itself. Inflammation is not just an annoying retention of water around your ankles and joints - it is literally your body raging an attack on itself. And it doesn’t just end with joint pain, it is the root cause of a multitude of illnesses that include heart disease. So it’s best to eliminate inflammation inducing foods such as wheat, grains and nightshade vegetables - like right now...

3.

If you’re serious about living your best life, you must come to terms and accept the fact that you can no longer ignore your health. Eating healthy food and getting enough exercise is not optional. It’s a requirement if you truly hope to be your best self and get to the next level where your dreams reside.

Author’s Spotlight

Interviewed by Jennifer Diaby

Please introduce and tell us a little about yourself. Ms. Sonja Pinckney Rhodes is a #1 Amazon bestselling author of From Pain to Purpose: A Bridge Over Troubled Waters, as well and #1 bestselling Author internationally in India. She is also the Visionary Author of Greater Works: A Compilation of Prayers for Every Day Life. Both books were published in 2019. Ms. Rhodes is: ●The Founder and CEO of JMPinckney Publishing Company, LLC ●Advocate for Battered and Abused Women with My Sister’s House ●South Carolina Realtor for Carolina Elite Real Estate ●South Carolina State Retiree ●Journalist for The Charleston Chronicle News Paper ●Speaker for Crime Victims In addition, she is a spiritual Advisor for the Young Adult and Baptist Young Women Ministries, and she teaches biblical principles as a Young Adult Sunday School Teacher for ages eighteen through thirty-six years old at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. Ms. Rhodes earned her Master’s Degree in Business Management with a Minor in Human Resource Management from Strayer University in 2014. She is a native of Charleston, South Carolina; the elder daughter of Dea. Johnny Pinckney (deceased) and Mary Pinckney, the proud Mother of two sons, Jon Michael Pinckney, Sr. and Andre’ Christopher Rhodes, Mother-in-Law of one admired daughter-in-law, Markita Flemons Pinckney and three beautiful grandchildren, Jon Michael Pinckney, Jr., Ari Samiya Pinckney and Nia Malika Pinckney. What inspired you to write books and become an author? My gift of writing was divinely inspired by God based on the trauma that I had experienced in my life as a child and a young adult. There were offenses and violations that had occurred and I was sworn to secrecy. Those things became the foundation for how I managed my life that resulted in failed relationships. An old adage says, “What’s done in the dark will definitely come to light”. God began to awaken me with powerful prayers over and over again each night and I proceeded to write them. It led to me seeking God deeper, which motivated me to write and hear His subtle voice. My admiration of writing grew deeper and the hidden secrets emerged into a novel. What I was once ashamed of is now a tool to empower and uplift women that have experienced the same type violations and insults. Tell the readers about your books, “From Pain To Purpose: A Bridge Over Troubled Waters and Greater Works?” From Pain to Purpose is a journey of how strong the power of God is, even in our darkest moments. When we have not acquired the knowledge of what our purpose is and the why of the offenses, it becomes a mask of hiding destruction and chaos that occurs in our hearts, minds and spirits resulting in insecurities. However, it gives the insatiable desire and will to fight through tears and disappointments. It describes the quietness and isolation that occurs while separated from all others and from the world that bridges the purpose to trusting God with the secret pains of our beings. It may take a lifetime to comprehend how high, how deep and how wide the power of God is that reigns in our lives. Nevertheless, He keeps us from falling and gives us hope to continue by trusting, leaning and growing in Him so that the purpose actually exceeds the pain. This book will reveal to you how the Holy Spirit will transform you from hurt and hopelessness to walking victoriously with God. Greater Works is a compilation of prayers by women who prayed based on their personal and spiritual experience from their walk with God. There were many sleepless nights, fallen teardrops and heartfelt prayers to the Lord, trusting and holding to His unchanging hands to deliver, set free, heal, or simply show up. The Psalmist said it best that weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. That midnight hour may have lasted for days, weeks, months, or even years as they believed God to resolve their situations. Liken the oak tree, their waiting symbolized strength, morale, resistance and knowledge. The tree is known for its towering strength that is often associated with honor, nobility, wisdom, longevity and deep roots. These women stood the test of time and received grace after grace from God. Today, they witness through their prayers how God was a bridge over troubled waters. Where can your books be purchased? From Pain to Purpose and Greater Works can both be purchased on my website: JM PinckneyPublishing.com and Amazon.com. From Pain to Purpose can also be purchased from Barnes and Noble and Books-A -Million.

Tell the readers about JMPinckney Publishing Company, LLC and when was it established? JMPinckney Publishing, established 2019, is a high-quality, affordable solution for getting your book professionally published. We offer Editorial Reviews, Cover and Book Design, eBook Creation, ISBN & Barcodes, Printed Book Distribution and more. Your work is not outsourced and you will receive personal contact with the editor to guide you throughout the entire process from a draft to a finished product then on to be published. JMP was inspired by the Parents of the Founder, Johnny and Mary Pinckney. Johnny, now deceased, was an awesome man of God that lived his life as a demonstration of whom God wants us all to become in His Kingdom. He was an astute man that worked hard and put his heart into everything he did for his family and others. He challenged his three children, Jonathan, Sonja and Sherri to be all they are called to be because the sky is the limit. Mary, a Proverbs 31 Woman, is still an example of how God strengthens women to be mothers, wives, daughters, sisters and a friend. She maintained the home with diligence and grace and tended to her family with loving-kindness. They taught and led us based on biblical standards and introduced us to Christ, who is the head of our lives. And for that, we are truly grateful. JMPinckney Publishing is ]established as a legacy in remembrance of my Father, Johnny Pinckney and for my Mother and the Pinckney Family to be passed down from generation to generation. For we are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, and holy nation, a peculiar people: that we should show forth the praises of Him who has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light! I Peter 2:9 For women who have experienced domestic violence, what advice would you give them as an advocate and speaker with “My Sister’s House.” As an advocate for women who have suffered and still experiencing domestic violence, it empowers me to speak on their behalf to offer encouragement and give my personal testimony. The situation is different for each person. A single advice is not suffice for everyone, as some are in direct danger of their abuser, and is held captive in their situations. While dating, notice red flags and don’t dismiss things and think they’re cute. The smallest act of controlling; keeping you away from family, friends or your career are evident signs. There are many kinds of abuse; verbal, emotional, mental, sexual and physical abuse. Unfortunately, I experienced all. I would advise everyone to pray for guidance, tell someone that you can trust, call the authorities and if at all possible, leave and find safe shelter. My Sister’s House is a place of refuge in Charleston, South Carolina. Their mission is to break the cycle of domestic violence by providing a wide range of support, services, and education within and beyond the walls of their shelter. All of their programs are free to clients and all personal information is kept strictly confidential. It’s unfortunate that, less than 3 percent of domestic violence victims press charges against their abuser. My Sister’s House assists those victims who consider either pressing charges or filing for an Order of Protection. I have also committed to partner with MSH to provide spiritual and educational growth by leading bible study along with other women and spiritual leaders of my church, Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. This partnership is soon coming, after the end of the Covid-19 crisis. I encourage all to pray for direction and protection then stand up for yourselves, children and your lives by speaking up when it’s safe. What is one of your greatest accomplishments? One of my greatest accomplishments is forgiving myself from all the pain, and violations that occurred by the hands of others. I kept silent for most of my life protecting others and living through the shame of their offenses. I didn’t realize how it impacted my life, or how and why I viewed myself as unworthy. As I grew stronger and closer to God, He revealed those things that I needed to confront. It was difficult and the journey wasn’t always clear but I trusted and leaned on Him. Writing my first book, From Pain to Purpose: A Bridge Over Troubled Waters, was the beginning of freeing myself from the guilty shame of abuse, lies and deceit. Doors were opened and I walked through with fear and trembling, but as a beacon of light for women who are struggling and living with this demon. God proclaims in His Word that, we are more than a conqueror in Him who truly loves us, we are fearfully and wonderfully made, and He created, ordained and destined us for greatness. Therefore, I admonish you to put on your seatbelts, hold on to God’s unchanging hands and don’t let go. This is one of my greatest accomplishments because I am now free, liberated and walking in my God-given purpose. Give us some words to educate, inspire, and encourage women and all of our readers of Growth Women’s Business Networks Magazine. Women are a powerful source of humankind. We have the strength to bare and raise children; take care of a family and work a full-time job, while aspiring to be great individuals. Kamala Harris is the face of a diverse and successful woman that have exceeded the odds of becoming not just a mother, and a wife but an African American Woman who will become the first Vice President of the United States of America. Like Michelle Obama said, “The difference between a broken community and a thriving one is the presence of women who are valued.” Whatever God has placed in your heart, use it as a gift to be a blessing to others. Always, invest in yourself because you are worth it. Your knowledge will inspire and encourage other women to fulfill their highest potential. In the words of King Lemuel in Proverbs 31, Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.

Author’s Spotlight

Brenda Scott-Coleman Interviewed by Jennifer Diaby Please introduce and tell us a little about yourself. I was born in West Virginia and raised in Pennsylvania and at a very early age I was in a car accident that injured my face and I grew up with a face that looked quite different from other children. My life has been quite challenging but I survived on the love of my family and my faith in God. I eventually had over 25 surgeries. I am a widow and have 2 sons and 2 grandchildren along with my dream house nearby the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. I pursued a job of my lifetime where I traveled the world promoting international trade and received one of the U.S. government highest honors the Bronze Medal. I am also a designer of unique earrings CHANGE-A-LETS marketed to those who cannot wear traditional earrings due to medical reasons. What inspired you to become an Author and start writing books? Some years ago, during a Grandparents Day visit to my grandson’s school I happened to arrive at the school early just in time for recess to see the children happily playing together; with the exception of the little boy with no arms that was pushed aside. That experience brought tears to my eyes and inspired me to share my story with children with differences about the challenges I faced as a child with a difference and how I fought that adversity. You have written four books about life growing up with a facial difference. Tell the readers why it was important to write books on this topic. It was important to write books on this topic because it has given me the opportunity to reach out to children with differences and to share with them my life about how I learned to live with being different. I also believe my story benefits all children and teaches them that we are all different in our own different way and not to judge others by the way they look. I hope and pray that my words would inspire all of them in some way. Where can your books be purchased? My books are available from: www.amazon.com/author/bren-dee and Barnes and Noble. As part of the mission to give hope, encouragement, and prayer to children with facial differences you give your books to hospitals and organizations. How can hospitals or organizations who would like to get your books for this purpose get in contact with you? They can reach me by email: cbrendee@yahoo.com You have a new book that was just released called “Uniquely Beautiful.” What is your new book about and the reason you wrote it? It is a self-help book that offers my experience with facial differences and written as a letter to girls with differences and teased about the way they look. It chronicles the challenges I faced with a facial difference and explains how I grew up making accommodations such as eating soft food, hiding my face in public and a difference that made social interaction difficult and academic respect hard-won. I am hoping that my words in this letter will show them that nobody is perfect and beauty comes from within. What is one of your greatest accomplishments? My greatest accomplishment is my way of reaching out to children with differences who are teased because of the way they look. I enjoy reading my story and showing my pictures to those children about how I looked as a child and was teased just like them about the way I looked. My reflections appear to have expressions of fulfillment on their faces and to hear these words coming from such young lips “when I grow up, I want to be just like you”. Those words of thanks are music to my ears. Please share with everyone about your upcoming conferences, events, or speaking engagements. My latest book UNIQUELY BEAUTIFUL will be featured in a National Black Book Festival Holidays flyer for the 2020 holiday season that will feature authors who are making a difference in literature. Plans are underway for a spring “Eat and Chat” event for girls (10-16) to celebrate the launching of my latest book UNIQUELY BEAUTIFUL and will focus on the objective of the book “beauty is only skin deep” with hope that the topic will benefit them in some way. The event will be held at a resort on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. The date, time, etc. will be announced later. Give us some words to educate, inspire, encourage women and all of our readers of Growth Women’s Business Networks Magazine. Words from my Mother and Grandmother: “The Lord will not put more on you than you can bear. Having some pain and grief in your life sometimes makes you a better person. Never give up on life, regardless of how many problems you face.” Those words have followed me throughout my life.

I was running terribly late to submit a business proposal to a potential client by the deadline. When I finally arrived, I saw many cars parked by the entrance and quite some commotion as masses frantically ran with white envelopes in their hands to submit their proposals to the same client. I had to act fast and join the race to give our company a chance to achieve something glorious. I was grateful that I had not worn high heels that day otherwise I would not

have made it in the race. When we got to the entrance, one male competitor with discouragement written all over his face remarked, ”Why did we waste our time. There are so many other proposals”

The year 2020 was extraordinarily challenging, with many people losing their jobs due to unforeseen and numerous company closures. Most businesses that could not adapt to the new normal were forced to abruptly close. Some wished they could press the pause or reset button of life so that they could find themselves. Unfortunately, others lost loved ones and bread winners due to the pandemic. As the year ends, many people could be feeling like the man whom I ran against for the submission of the business proposal. They have run the race of life and feel hopeless because of the overwhelming challenges. Years ago, I read an inspiring article about the two sisters, Serena and Venus Williams. Apparently, Venus struggled with a debilitating auto-immune disease called Sjogren’s syndrome which threatened her career. Instead of being overwhelmed by that challenge, she changed her diet and persisted. At the age of 37, she is still competing near the top of women tennis. Serena won her last grand slam while she was pregnant. These 2 women have overcome insurmountable obstacles to reach the top. Maybe 2020 was not a productive and fulfilling year for you because of the pandemic and many other overwhelming challenges. Maybe your income levels were significantly affected. The 2 sisters who have succeeded despite challenges did not overlook or underestimate their challenges. Instead they faced them like head on and stayed the course with courage, discipline and adaptability. In my book, “The dream”, I state that to “perceive your dream, Know where you are, to determine where you want to go. Know who you are, to determine who you want to be. Know who you are not, to determine what you should do to be who you should be.” Maya Angelou once said “You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from and how you can still come out of it.”

Self-Care in Progress: How to Make Taking Care of You a Priority

With the demands of a busy world, it’s harder and harder to set aside time to relax. However, without these set times for relaxation we stand the risk of experiencing what’s called “burn out.” At this time, burn out is now listed in the DSM 5 which is the psychological diagnostic manual which clinicians use to diagnose mental health issues. As a society, we are tired! How can you prevent this level of exhaustion? By being attentive to your physical, mental, and emotional health. Put time limits on work and time spent outside of your home. Create routines for daily movement and exercise. Fifteen minutes of exercise or drinking an additional cup of water daily can be a small but mighty change in a busy day. Carve out intentional times for refection, journaling, prayer and/or meditation. Becoming more self-aware of your own thoughts and feelings can change your outlook from pessimist to optimist. This time can also allow you to see if you may need further help managing your emotions. Focus on making small changes which can have a mighty impact on how valuable you feel as a person. When your sense of value increases, so does your overall contentment with your life. Commit to your own self-care today and begin a journey towards balance and wellness in mind, body, and spirit.

Author/ Entrepreneur/ Nonprofit Organization Spotlight

Interviewed by Jennifer Diaby Please introduce and tell the readers about yourself? Ms. Miyoshi Umeki Gordon came out of retirement to launch a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to help persons with Myositis or Breast Cancer diseases. She is very passionate in helping others. Her career in the medical field for 30 years has shown she is truly an advocate for humanity. She worked 30 years in Radiology and most of these years she served as the Diagnostic Radiology Supervisor. After developing Breast Cancer; she seamlessly changed careers to a Human Resources Specialist for five years. She hired staff and Physicians from across the United States and International. She has a Bachelor Degree in Health Science, Associate Degree of Applied Science Radiology, graduated with President’s honors; Campbell University graduated Cum laude, Certification of Recognition for Honorable Service by American Registry of Radiologic Technologists-Retired, Certificate of Appreciation from the Department of Veterans Affairs for her time and devotion in assisting in the Welcome Home Event at the Orlando Veterans Affairs Medical Center. She has one adult Son. During the Pandemic; Ms. Miyoshi Umeki Gordon became a first time Author. Just an amazing gift; she has been given by God!!! You recently released your new book called “Broken, But Still A Masterpiece: Surviving Multiple Unknown Illnesses.” Tell the readers about your book and the reason you wrote it. I have always wanted to write a book and enlighten my Family one day I would in God’s timing. During the Pandemic; our 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization United – A Divine Purpose, Inc. did a huge COVID -19 project to assist first line workers by sending masks across the U.S., purchased meals for Healthcare Workers, donations made to Open Door Soup Kitchen, Seniors First, Feeding America, assisted families in need because of the Pandemic as well as Myositis and Breast Cancer patients and more. Once the COVID-19 project was completed; I had alone time with God. I prayed and asked Him if it was time to write my memoir to let me know. Two weeks later on a Wednesday morning 3:00am; a whisper to me in my sleep “Broken But Still A Masterpiece and glass on the back”. Thereafter; this was my confirmation to write my memoir. I called the Publisher and told her what God told me and she told me to begin writing, I informed her I wanted to write my book in thirty days and have the softcopy and hardback by December 2020. The Publisher asked me was I diligent enough to write a book in 30 days; my response to her “If God said I can, I will” and my book was birthed from writing until published in 90 days by Butterfly Typeface Publishing Company, Ms. Iris Williams. Synopsis: Some things are not only tough to endure but equally challenging to communicate. I was raised to be strong and confident. However, there came a time in my life when my faith and strength were challenged. Faced with the choice to suffer in silence or speak my truth, I chose to “Let Go and Let God”. I grew up in a loving and caring environment. The values my parents instilled, and my faith in God are what sustained me when life seemed bleak and hopeless. Fueled by the love and desire to parent my only son well, I preserved through my emotional and physical pain to live out God’s purpose for my life. My book (memoir) is my story of triumph. Where can your book be purchased? Broken, But Still A Masterpiece can be purchased on Amazon. I know you an Advocate for Myositis & Breast Cancer at Wewo Radiostation. My work family was like my 2 nd Family, I began working at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center (Cape Fear Valley Health System) for 25 years. My internship turned into per diem job opportunity and I was hired July 1978. During my Radiology career; I held several positions as a Radiologic Technologist, Traffic Control Technologist, Quality Control Director and Diagnostic Supervisor which I served most of my radiology career. I then relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana and had the opportunity to serve a Team Leader for four years at St. Vincent Indianapolis and relocated to Orlando, FL where I had the most meaningful experience as hiring Physicians at the Department of Veterans Affairs for one year before retirement. Author Miyoshi U Gordon, you passionate about helping others. What inspired you to start your health ministry and also participate in activities for women and senior ministries? I am very passionate about helping others since I was in my

younger years as a teenager. I volunteered at McCain Hospital in my hometown Raeford, North Carolina; where I transferred patients to and from Radiology. I became interested in this field of study. I am driven to helping others because I want to give back to my community and persons whom may need assistance.

My greatest aspiration in helping others are because I am a 25 years Myositis Survivor, 14 years Breast Cancer Survivor and Emotional Abuse Victim. I feel the more I speak about these topics; it gives hope to persons going through these circumstances they are not alone and keep their faith strong and to be around Family and have a circle of uplifting positive inspirational friends. Please give some words of hope and encouragement to women who are battling breast cancer? My encouragement to persons who are battling breast cancer; they are not along during this journey. There are resources at their fingertip including UADP, American Cancer Society which we are in partnership with as well as other resources listened on our website: www.united-adivinepurposeinc.com The journey is not easy; however, with strong faith, determination and the will power to know they are going to kick cancer. Going through the journey; please lean on your strong faith, family, friends, clergy and their specialist and caretakers. These persons are a Team to assist them in time of need. Also; with a strong group such as our organization and others, we are just a phone call or email away. I would always tell those person battling breast cancer to NEVER EVER GIVE UP AND KEEP THEIR FAITH STRONG AND REMAIN HOPEFUL. Please share any upcoming conferences, events, or workshops? During the Pandemic; we are now doing online events. Recently a Breast Cancer Fundraiser and now in partnership to assist a few families at Christmas with Haven Focused, LLC. Please visit our website: www.united-adivinepurposeinc.com to keep up with current events. Give us some words to educate, inspire, and encourage women and all of our readers of Growth Women’s Business Networks Magazine. My advice to educate, inspire and encourage women and all readers of Growth Women’s Business Networks Magazine is be there authentic self. No matter what challenges you face in life with the right attitude you can overcome them. Pray about all things and have faith God will move in your favor in His timing. While I have become a better person, God is still molding me. I am determined to stay focused. Life may present obstacles, but I was not built to break. The flaws I possess serve to strengthen me. I am living my authentic self and I am peaceful and serene to know that I am living in the moment. With goals and aspirations I have set; I can accomplish each one of them with God at the forefront of my life. I have learned to re-engage myself with positive people who give me encouragement and inspiration to reach higher ground not for material things but being a servant to help someone in which my Parents taught us at an early age “Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You” – The Golden Rule. With quiet time and reflection during the Pandemic, I have learned through knowledge of wisdom, the acceptance of being true to my authentic self. I’m so thankful and grateful to have the opportunity to be recognized in Growth Women’s Business Networks Magazine.
