Gender equity in excellence Gwinnett’s boys, girls teams equally dominant at state level BY GUY CURTRIGHT
GWINNETT’S STATE CHAMPS
Staff Correspondent
T
here’s no gender gap in Gwinnett County high school basketball. Both the girls and the boys reign. Schools from the county have won 28 girls state titles and 18 boys state championships, with 29 Georgia High School Association crowns coming in the past 11 years. Girls teams have taken 20 of those recent championships, including three last season. The boys captured two titles last March, giving Gwinnett a staggering five of the six state championships in which county schools were eligible. Wesleyan won both boys and girls titles in Class A, becoming the first school to sweep titles twice. The Wolves also won both in 2008 while in Class AA. Actually, Gwinnett may have just missed two schools sweep championships. Norcross won the Class AAAAA girls championship and the boys were deprived of getting a chance to match it because of a controversial ending to their quarterfinal game against eventual Class AAAAA boys winner Milton. Needless to say, the bar has been set very high. Nowhere higher than at Wesleyan, a private school located across Spalding Drive from Norcross in the Peachtree Corners area of west Gwinnett. Coach Jan Azar’s girls teams have won three straight state championships and seven in nine years. The boys team, coached by Skip Matherly, has two titles in three years. “Success breeds success,” said Azar, who is also assistant athletics director. “We’re not in competition. I think we feed off each other.”
Teams from Gwinnett County won five basketball championships last season and 29 in the past 11 years, raising the county’s total to 46 all time.

Wesleyan certainly isn’t in the spotlight by itself. Gwinnett has had numerous runs of excellence in recent years. Collins Hill won five girls titles in seven years, capped by three straight championships in current Connecticut All-America Maya Moore’s final seasons and a No. 1 national ranking in 2007. Angie Hembree coached the Collins Hill girls to their first three titles, then led the Norcross girls to their championship last season. The Norcross boys won three consecutive Class AAAAA titles from 2006 to 2008. The Wesleyan girls are going for a fourth straight championships this season, while the Buford girls are trying for three in a row in Class AA.

The recent run of success as coincided with Gwinnett County’s rapid growth. But basketball is part of Gwinnett’s rural roots. The first high school in the county to win a state football title was Buford in 1978. By then, Gwinnett had already claimed 13 boys and girls state basketball titles. Greater Atlanta Christian dominated small school competition in the 1970s and early 1980s, winning five girls championships and three boys titles. With 12 total championships in basketball, the Spartans lead the county. GAC won the Class AA boys title last season and the girls, who have won three state titles in the past decade, made the Final Four.
Eddie Martin, a Central Gwinnett standout in the early 1970s, coached Norcross to its three straight titles before winning another in his second season as GAC coach. He’s seen first-hand the growth in the county and its phenomenal recent success in basketball. “Basketball has always been strong as far back as I can remember,” Martin said. “Schools were small back then and maybe that worked against football. Basketball doesn’t take as many players. “When the county started to grow, there was a lull there for awhile. But with the unbelievable growth the last decade or so there has been a phenomenal run of success in basketball. It’s amazing really.” Schools now have multiple

gyms, giving the boys and girls plenty of practice times. There is no rivalry, just mutual respect. “We’re in this together,” Martin said. “You want both teams do to well. It sets the tone.” No area of metro Atlanta has come close to matching Gwinnett in basketball during the past decade and the run doesn’t appear anywhere close to stopping. Maybe someday the county will go 6-for-6, sweeping Class AAAAA, AA and A. That may seem impossible, but don’t bet against it. Who would have believed what Gwinnett has already accomplished?

Wolves return six of their top players from last season and add two transfers from Northview — Alex Flagler and Nick Mitchell. The key returnee for the Wolves is T.J. Shipes. ■ Region: 8-AAAAA ■ Coach: Cynthia Cooper ■ 2009-10 record: 14-15 ■ Returning regulars: None ■ Players to watch: Anna LaCavera, Jr., 5-6 Sadie Caudell, Jr., 5-8 Ashley Griffin, Jr., 5-7 ■ Outlook: The Rams made the Class AAAAA state tournament last season in Cynthia Cooper’s first year as coach, but graduated all their starters and don’t have a single senior on this year’s roster. Hardest to replace will be Taren White, who led the county with a 21.2 scoring average last season while also contributing 3.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists. Of the returnees, junior guard Anna LaCavera was the biggest contributor a year ago. Tiara James (pictured) and Courtney Lee will be counted on inside. ■ Worth noting: Cooper, a former standout college point guard at Wingate, was an assistant at Norcross for 10 years and at Shiloh for two seasons before coming to Grayson last year. She was the fourth coach in six years for the Rams.
■ Region: 8-AAAAA ■ Coach: Brian Anderson ■ 2009-10 record: 12-13 ■ Returning regulars: Ciavy Wiles, Sr., 6-4 Calvin Espeut, Sr., 5-10 ■ Other player to watch: Kenny Lockett, Sr., 6-4 ■ Outlook: Ciavy Wiles averaged 11.8 points per game last season as the Rams’ second-leading scorer and was the top rebounder with 9.5 per game. Calvin Espeut is the only other returning starter, though, and the five seniors from a year ago will be missed. Gone is leading scorer Javarris Smith and big man Andrew Osemhen, now at Kennesaw State. ■ Worth noting: The Grayson boys are still searching for their first winning season, but just missed a year ago. Schedule gets another boost Duluth site of holiday invite BY GUY CURTRIGHT Staff Correspondent
Gwinnett County already had two traditionrich high school basketball tournaments during the Christmas break. Now there is a newcomer. Eight girls teams from Georgia will be joined by eight others from around the Southeast for Peach State Hoops’ first JumpOffPlus.com Holiday Invitational on Dec. 27-29 at Duluth. The four Gwinnett teams in the event are Class AA two-time champion Buford, Class AA challenger Greater Atlanta Christian, defending Class AAAAA Region 7 champion Mill Creek and host Duluth. Each of the 16 teams will play three games and compete for titles in two eight-team divisions. The non-Gwinnett teams from Georgia are Campbell, Alpharetta, Carrollton and Lovett. The out-ofstate teams are coming from Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Kentucky. The Peach State Hoops event compensates in some ways for the contraction of the Deep South Classic,
which has cut its field in half in recent years and no longer invites teams from outside Georgia. The Deep South Classic, begun in 1991 and once up to 32 teams, will be held at Brookwood on Dec. 28-30 with eight boys teams and eight girls teams. Northwest Whitfield is back to defend its girls title. Eight boys teams and eight girls teams will compete in North Gwinnett’s Jared Cook Classic, also on Dec. 28-30. Entered on the boys side is a team from Puerto Rico. In addition to Thanksgiving and Christmas tournaments, Gwinnett County will be the site of several showcases. Greater Atlanta Christian hosts a boys event on Dec. 11, with the Class AA champion Spartans playing Class AAAAA champ Milton in the final game. The biggest boys showcase is the two-day Marriott Invitational at Norcross on Jan. 21-22, with top Georgia teams like the Blue Devils, Milton and GAC matched up against top teams from around the nation. Coming the farthest is Washington power Rainier Beach of Seattle.

Good bloodlines Progeny of NBA players give county teams boost BY GUY CURTRIGHT Staff Correspondent
When Lexie Brown moved to Atlanta from Orlando, it wasn’t that surprising that she landed at a school in Gwinnett County. As the child of a former NBA player, the talented sophomore guard fits right in. Brown, who has already committed to the University of Maryland, is just one of several players with pro basketball bloodlines who play for Gwinnett teams. Wesleyan has two girls — juniors Holli Wilkins and Kaelyn Causwell. Holli is the daughter of NBA player Gerald Wilkins and the niece of Atlanta Hawks great Dominique Wilkins. Kaelen’s father is former NBA player Duane Causwell. The Wesleyan boys team also has the child of a former NBA player, this one an all-star. Mark Price’s son Hudson joined the Wolves this season as a sophomore after transferring from Marist. Both college prospects, the 6-foot Holli Wilkins and 6-4 Kaelyn Causwell have already won two Class A state titles each with Wesleyan. GIRLS
■ Region: 8-A ■ Coach: Will Cantrell ■ 2009-10 record: 12-13 ■ Returning regulars: Jack Griffin, Sr., 6-1 (pictured) Dylan Shulte, Sr, 6-2 ■ Other players to watch: Griffin Gambill, Jr., 6-1 Josh Lowery, Sr., 5-10 Daniel Williams, Sr., 6-2 ■ Outlook: Will Cantrell takes over as coach with the Lions still looking for their first trip to the GHSA boys state tournament. Jack Griffin, who was second on the team with 3.7 assists per game is one of just two returning starters. Hebron must replace Trey Saxton and Anthony Stewart, who combined for 28 points per game. Stewart led the team in rebounding at 8.9 per game and Saxton was tops in assists at 4.5 per game. ■ Worth noting: Cantrell, the younger brother of Providence Christian baseball coach Adam Cantrell, came to Hebron after three seasons as an assistant basketball coach at Monroe Area.
■ Region: 8-A ■ Coach: Judy Conner ■ 2009-10 record: 15-9 ■ Returning regulars: Jalisa Tucker, Sr., 5-6 Tai Stringer, Sr., 5-7 Kara Adams, Soph., 5-10 Leah Benton, Sr., 5-2 ■ Other players to watch: Lacy Stephens, Sr., 5-7 Whitney Edwards, Sr., 5-9 Ziah Dorsey, Sr., 5-6 Tatiana Torres, Sr., 5-4 ■ Outlook: The Lions had only one senior a year ago and return seven players who started games a year ago. Senior forward Whitney Edwards will get a late start on the season, leaving the team shorthanded early. She is recovering from surgery. ■ Worth noting: Hebron Christian made the state tournament its first five years as a GHSA member before missing the past two seasons. The Lions reached the Class A state semifinals in 2005 and 2007 under Betsy Hensley. The former coach was originally scheduled to return this season after a two-year absence.

Coach Jeremy Huckaby does have some height, with Victoria Inman at 5-foot-11 and Monique Pitts at 510. Other top freshmen are Lauren Brown and Amber Cesair.

■ Region: 7-AAAAA ■ Coach: Billy Davis ■ 2009-10 record: 24-6 ■ Returning regulars: None ■ Players to watch: Troidell Carter, Sr., 6-9 Tevin Glass, Jr., 6-7 (pictured) Deondre Lucas, Sr., 6-1 Anthony Andrews, Sr., 6-3 Zach Stevens, Sr., 6-4 Chaalid Hill, Sr., 6-3 Jordan Capps, Soph., 6-4 Devonte Carter, Soph., 6-5 ■ Outlook: Although there are no returning starters, the Mustangs still have plenty of talent and size as they hope to continue their recent run of success. Meadowcreek has made the state tournament five straight years under coach Billy Davis, posting a 113-26 record during that stretch. But the Mustangs haven’t made it past the Class AAAAA quarterfinals, which they reached in 2006. This season’s team have plenty of height with 6-foot-9 senior Troidell Carter and 6-foot-7 Tevin Glass. ■ Worth noting: Meadowcreek moves
■ Region: 7-AAAAA ■ Coach: Adrianne Long ■ 2009-10 record: 3-22 ■ Returning regulars: Freddie Banks, Jr., 5-10 LaBrea McKay, Sr., 5-10 Asha Phillips, Sr., 5-4 ■ Other players to watch: Marian Assibey-Mensah, Jr., 5-11 Angel Alexander, Soph., 5-8 ■ Outlook: The Mustangs have some stability with 10 returning players and hope to continue their improvement. Meadowcreek is led by junior Freddie Banks and senior LaBrea McKay, both strong rebounders. Banks had a good summer and will be counted on to be the team’s top offensive threat. Team chemistry should be a strength for the Mustangs. ■ Worth noting: Meadowcreek is a long way from its glory days of the early 2000s, but coach Adrianne Long is doing her best to get the girls program back on track. The Mustangs made the state tournament three consecutive seasons from 2001 to 2003, finishing as state runner-up in 2002.

Simmons, a freshman volleyball player at Clemson, averaged 15.9 points and 11.4 rebounds last season and the Hawks won’t have a lot of height this season. potential. Alicia Brookins and Tamarr Williams each averaged about seven points per game a year ago and Sierra Menzies returns at point guard after averaging 3.2 assists per game. The Hawks also add talented freshman Jasmine Carter. Williams and Christina McDannald are accurate outside shooters. ■ Worth noting: Mill Creek beat eventual state champion Norcross twice last season and won the Region 7-AAAAA title for the third straight time. The Hawks have made it to the state tournament five consecutive seasons under coach Ashley Phillips, losing in the Elite Eight for the second time last season after making the Final Four in 2008. But three starters return and Mill Creek hopes to make a playoff run this time. Brandon Hayman, who will play for Samford, leads the way. The versatile guard averaged 12 points and 4.1 assists last season. The other returning starters are Ronald Wamer, a dogged defender, and rugged inside player Daniel Braschler. All three have GPAs of 3.6 or better. ■ Worth noting: Coach Chad Rogers is looking for key contributions from Daniel Loudermilk and Paul Evans, reserves a year ago as sophomores. Evans is expected to take over at point guard and Loudermilk is a 6-foot-6 forward who can really leap. Emery Buckner heads a group of four returning starters. She averaged 10.7 points and 2.7 assists last season while also getting two steals per game. Ivey Franklin was the team’s top rebounder at 7.2 per game. She and Jade Manning averaged just under six points. ■ Worth noting: Buckner is the lone senior and Franklin the only junior as the Bears again have a very young team. Mountain View also moves up to rugged Region 7-AAAAA after playing in Class AAA during its initial year.
■ Region: 7-AAAAA ■ Coach: Bob Perryman ■ 2009-10 record: 14-13 ■ Returning regulars: Drew Bollier, Sr., 6-2 Troy Taylor, Sr., 6-1 ■ Other players to watch: Charlie Brower, Sr., 6-4 Malcolm Bruce, Sr., 6-2 Caleb Grant, Soph., 6-5 Kevin Harford, Sr., 5-9 Tommy Jennings, Soph., 6-5 Willie Thomas, Sr., 6-3 ■ Outlook: Mountain View makes the jump up to Region 7-AAAAA from AAA in its second year and competing in one of the state’s toughest regions will be difficult. But the Bears return their two leading scorers in seniors Drew Bollier and Troy Taylor, and gain some height from the sophomore class with Caleb Grant and Tommy Jennings. Bollier is a deadly 3-point shooter who averaged 16 points per game a season ago. ■ Worth noting: The Bears got a boost with the addition of Malcolm Bruce, who moved back to Georgia from North Carolina. He will take over at point guard and should help get Mountain View’s running game going while also setting up Bollier and Taylor in the half court.

Annie Wheeler, who will play at Vermont, leads the returnees. The 6-foot-1 post player averaged 10.7 points and 7.0 rebounds a year ago. He will team outside with Cyrus Lavant, who is potentially an explosive scorer, and A.J. Clements. North Gwinnett went to overtime before losing to Campbell in the first round of the state tournament last season. ■ Worth noting: First-year coach Zach Smith, a young former assistant to Len Garner, is looking forward to a breakout season from Ryon Riggins. The 6-foot-9 senior as the potential to dominate inside and is a college prospect despite limited high school experience.

■ Region: 8-AAAAA ■ Coach: Mike McCoy ■ 2009-10 record: 28-1 ■ Returning regulars: Katie Carroll, Sr., 5-9 (pictured) Erika Joseph, Jr., 6-1 ■ Other players to watch: Mia Marshall, Soph., 6-3 Marissa Mandeldove, Soph., 5-2 Helena Pouengue, Jr., 5-8 Kelsey Stanton, Jr., 6-0 ■ Outlook: The Panthers were upset by Marietta in the first round of the state tournament, making for a very disappointing ending to a previously unbeaten season. Lauren Coleman, who helped lead the team to a 58-3 record over the past two seasons and a Class AAAAA Final Four berth in 2009, is now at Florida State. But the Panthers still have a good nucleus, led by returning starters Katie Carroll and Erika Joseph. Carroll, a four-year regular who has signed with Belmont, averaged 13 points per game last season. Joseph was the team’s leading rebounder at 7.5 per game.
■ Region: 8-AAAAA ■ Coach: Keenan Temple ■ 2009-10 record: 9-17 ■ Returning regulars: Delano Spencer, Soph., 6-2 Cameron Neysmith, Sr., 6-4 ■ Other players to watch: Elliott Abraham, Sr., 6-3 Kameron Russell, Sr., 6-5 ■ Outlook: The Panthers are trying to work their way back to their former success after two straight losing seasons. Parkview had six seniors last year, but leading scorer Delano Spencer returns. He averaged 17 points per game last season as a freshman. Also back is Cameron Neysmith, who contributed seven points, five assists and five rebounds per game as a junior. The top scorer to replace is Christian Patterson, who averaged 12 points per game. ■ Worth noting: Parkview went to the state tournament in 2007 and 2008, winning 20 games both years, before slipping. Keenan Temple took over as coach last season after Tim Watkins moved to Archer and is trying to rebuild the program. Trickum, Parkview’s feeder school, won the county middle school championship last season and a division title the year before.

■ Region: 7-AAAAA ■ Coach: Keith Arrington ■ 2009-10 record: 21-8 ■ Returning regulars: Corey Heyward, Sr., 6-1 (pictured) Moe Armistead, Sr., 5-8 ■ Other players to watch: Richie Everette, Sr., 6-2 Eric Ryba, Sr., 6-3 Brandon Jack, Jr., 6-5 Benny Johnson, Jr., 5-11 ■ Outlook: Peachtree Ridge is determined to advance to the state tournament for the sixth straight season despite some major losses. Gone is C.J. Blackwell, who transferred to Taft High School in Woodland Hills, Calif., after averaging 19.7 points and leading the county with 11.8 rebounds per game last season. The Lions do have experienced senior guards in Corey Heyward and Moe Armistead to count on. Heyward is headed to Morehead State. ■ Worth noting: Coach Keith Arrington hopes to get a boost for the second semester by picking up Daryan Griffin
■ Region: 7-AAAAA ■ Coach: James Clanahan ■ 2009-10 record: 14-13 ■ Returning regulars: Gabby Cole, Jr., 5-6 Melissa Turvey, Soph., 5-3 ■ Other players to watch: Lorrie Cruse, Fr., 5-8 Stephanie Amichia, Fr., 6-0 Shioban Frazier, Sr., 5-7 Claire Hays, Jr., 5-3 Alex Crawford, Sr., 5-8 Sally Crocker, Sr., 5-9 ■ Outlook: Peachtree Ridge’s season ended a win short of a state tournament berth a year ago with a 39-36 loss to North Gwinnett in the region quarterfinals and the Lions must replace their two leading scorers. Brittany Jack and Erika Waters combined for 28 points per game and Jack was also the team’s leading rebounder. Jack and Waters were the Lions’ only seniors a year ago, though. Leading the returnees are junior Gabby Cole and sophomore Melissa Turvey. ■ Worth noting: The Lions have a strong freshman class led by Lorrie Cruse and Stephanie Amichia, the tallest player on the roster at 6-foot. Both are being counted on to contribute this year.

Providence snuck up on teams last season, but that certainly won’t be the case this time with three talented junior transfers joining the returnees. Included is Aarvid Wanghammer, an exchange student from Sweden. The other newcomers are Kareem Adekunle (North Atlanta) and Nikko Cormier (Lakeside). ■ Worth noting: Providence returns its top offensive threats in Nate Bucher and Peter Hage, who led the team in scoring at nearly

Four starters return, but Providence remains a young team with just two seniors – Stephanie Cailor and Jessie Sherman. ■ Worth noting: Erika Gotfredson, a junior, led the Stars in scoring last season, averaging 12 points per game. Sherman was second on the team in rebounding, averaging six per game. Jessie Kowalewicz, a key reserve as a freshman, is a standout shortstop on Providence’s state tournament softball team.

GENERALS GIRLS
BOYS
■ Region: 8-AAAAA ■ Coach: Dale Grant ■ 2009-10 record: 15-11 ■ Returning regular: Jalisa Williams, Jr., 5-8 ■ Other player to watch: Holland Glenn, Jr., 5-7 Kimberleigh Rivers, Sr., 5-7 ■ Outlook: Shiloh’s promising season a year ago ended with a disappointing two-point loss to Berkmar on a last-second shot in the Region 8-AAAAA tournament and just two players return from that team. The Generals lost seven seniors from a year ago and had several other players transfer. ■ Worth noting: Jalisa Williams, who started as a sophomore a year ago, is sidelined for the start of the season, making coach Dale Grant’s rebuilding effort even more difficult. Holland Glenn is the only other player with varsity experience. Shiloh made the state tournament four straight years through 2007 and again in 2009 before coming up short last season.
■ Region: 8-AAAAA ■ Coach: Kim Rivers ■ 2009-2010 record: 14-15 ■ Returning regulars: Adonal Rogers, Jr., 6-2 Jordan Gaither, Jr., 6-3 ■ Other players to watch: Tyler Gordon, Sr., 6-4 Devonte Taylor, Sr., 6-0 Justin McCain, Sr., 6-2 Darius Conley, Sr., 6-5 ■ Outlook: The Generals closed strong last season and made the state tournament for the first time in three years before losing to Marietta in the first round as a No. 3 seed. Adonal Rogers and Jordan Gaither, who started as sophomores a year ago, lead the returnees. Coach Kim Rivers will also count on seniors Devonte Taylor, Justin McCain, Tyler Gordan and Darius Conley. The Generals still lack size, so again will rely on pressure defense and execution on offense. ■ Worth noting: Shiloh defeated Dacula in the Region 8-AAAAA tourney to qualify for the state tournament, then gave top-seeded Meadowcreek a battle in the semifinals before beating Berkmar in the third-place game.

Kevin Haynes, Sr., 5-11 Julian Jackson, Sr., 5-11 Logan Adams, Soph., 6-6 (pictured) Ashanti Day-Downey, Jr., 6-6 ■ Outlook: Coach Scott Bracco has to retool in his second season at South Gwinnett, with no starters returning. But the Comets have three guards back who saw action a year ago and a promising new frontline that has size and athleticism. Leading the newcomers is 6-foot-5 junior Qiydar Davis, a transfer from Blessed Trinity. He was a force on the Titans’ Class AA state tournament team a year ago. ■ Worth noting: A promising season ended in disappointment short of the state tournament a year ago, the Comets losing three of their final four regular-season games and then falling 73-71 to upstart

She averaged 15 points and 8.6 rebounds last season. South Gwinnett also will rely heavily on senior point guard Kiara Baker, who will play for Tusculum College next season. She led the team in assists last season and was second in scoring at 11.1 points per game. ■ Worth noting: Jaime Kruppa, a former South Gwinnett standout, took over as coach last season after eight years as an assistant and inherited a team that had lost 10 seniors. Before going to Georgia Tech, she played on South’s 1995 team that won the state title and went 33-0.

Andrew Frerking had 26 points in the championship game. He averaged 17.3 points per game last season and is a deadly 3point shooter. Brittany Stevens was a part-time starter at point guard last season as a freshman and Jordan Frazier had 17 points in the state title game. ■ Worth noting: Katie Frerking is expected to have a breakout season as a sophomore after tearing an ACL in the first game a year ago. Kaelyn Causwell, meanwhile, could become a dominant force inside as a junior. She has grown to 6foot-4.
