Mall opens first Macy’s Backstage in Georgia BY CURT YEOMANS curt.yeomans@gwinnettdailypost.com

Duluth resident Denise Montroy faced an uncanny coincidence Saturday when she and her husband, Tim, showed up as one of the first shoppers in the new Macy’s Backstage store at Gwinnett Place Mall. The couple had talked about Tim needing a new swimsuit Friday night, she said. They arrived at Macy’s bright and early Saturday morning for the grand opening of the store, getting the first parking space in their row, and when they finally got to walk into Macy’s Backstage, they got a surprise. The very first item they saw in the shop was a wall of men’s swimming trunks. “It’s like we’re meant to be here today,” Denise Montroy said. Macy’s Backstage is the company’s latest shopping concept, offering a store-within-a-store format where customers can get designer products at bargain prices. This is the first location in Georgia, but Macy’s Vice President and Store Manager Maegan Rivest said additional locations are expected to open soon at other malls in metro Atlanta. The 18,000-square-foot discount store is located on the second floor of the existing Macy’s store at the mall. The store has products ranging from women’s, men’s and children’s See BACKSTAGE, Page 7A

They couldn’t talk about The Dream Keepers sculpture without talking about the kids after all. After years of talking Gov. The newest — and fluffiest — member of the Lilburn Police Department has a new house thanks to a local fifthgrade class. The Parkview Christian School class, taught by JoAnne Gray, presented the department Tuesday with a handmade doghouse for its new K-9, Ajax. “The dog house ended up a huge success,” Community Relations Officer Mike Johnson said. “It was a lot better than what anybody would have anticipated. It turned out to be a fantastic project.”

The project also fostered new relationships. “Children don’t have an experience with police officers very often,” Parkview Christian Principal Cindy Nation said. “Now they’re able to see them as people. One kid I quoted said, ‘I’ll never look at a police officer the same way.’” It all began with a mandatory service project. “Because we feel like it’s really important for our kids
