Cherry Blossom Festival marks milestone Festival rooted in friendship CONYERS — What started as a kind gesture of friendship between two different cultures has literally blossomed over the past 30 years into an event which draws tens of thousands of people — the annual Conyers Cherry Blossom Festival.

Local residents who witnessed the genesis of the festival three decades ago recently spoke to the Citizen about just how the event came to fruition.

City of Conyers Tourism Manager Harriet Gattis said the city had its first festival following a 1980 gift from Hideo Ogino, former president of the Maxell Corporation in Conyers. The company used to occupy the buildings on Parker Road in what is now the Rockdale County government annex

buildings.

Ogino presented the city with 500 yoshino cherry trees, the same trees that bloom at the nation’s Capital. Half of the trees were planted on the Maxell property and the other 250 trees were presented to then-mayor Charles Walker to plant around the city, including in front of the railroad tracks coming into the city.

“It was a gesture of friendship and (they wanted) to make themselves feel

an important part of the community,” Walker said.

In Japan, the community celebrated under the cherry trees when they bloomed. In the spirit of that tradition, Maxell worked with the ConyersRockdale Chamber of Commerce and the first festival was held in 1981 on the Maxell property.

Maxell continued to lead in event planning until 1991 when a foundation took it over. In 1997, the festival out-

grew the Maxell property and moved to the Georgia International Horse Park. In 1999, the festival became a two-day event.

Darlene Partain, now a sales manager at the horse park, worked at Maxell in the 1980s and served as festival chairperson when the festival moved. She recalled the smaller event where the Japanese wives were very involved and taught everyone bon odori, a traditional Japanese dance.

“At that time, there probably weren’t that many Japanese here in Georgia. So it was a new culture. They wanted to introduce the culture as a gesture of friendship,” Partain said. “It’s just a goodwill gesture of friendship that we all do have differences and yet those qualities are so important to share.”

Partain said the Conyers Cherry Blossom Festival owes its 30-year success to those who worked so hard to establish it in its early years.

“It took a team to make that event,” Partain said. “Without them, it wouldn’t be what it is today.”

shea butter and half emu oil for a rich and luxurious texture. And, Baker said the homemade emu soap lasts twice as long as commercial soap, as it has no additives.

“It’s a lot milder than Dove as we’ve had a lot of people compare the two,” he said, adding that shampoos and lip balms are also popular items.

The pure emu oil is used for medicinal purposes for such problems as body aches and pains, wrinkles, scars and skin irritations, as well as an assortment of other ailments.

Baker said his partner Deb Munday has multiple sclerosis and was bedridden until she began using emu oil.

“Now she’s running around like a teenager,” he said.

Atlanta Puppet Show involves music and audience interaction CONYERS — Whether it’s a jig, a dance, song or playing the fiddle, the puppets of Peter Hart’s Atlanta Puppet Show is a sure bet to entertain the whole family during the Cherry Blossom Festival this year.

Hart will bring to the festival this year his family of characters, which includes a rapping skeleton, a daredevil cat with a “catapult” and a family of bunny rabbits that play fiddle, ride unicycles, clog and much more.

Hart said the performances are intended to allow people to enjoy stopping by, even if it’s for a short time.

“It could be thought of as a sort of puppet vaudeville show,” he said. “This makes it convenient for festival-goers to see part of a show and not feel they have missed something within a story.”

Hart said he will use marionette puppets in his routines during the festival.

He will be on stage and the audience can see him manipulate the puppets. The routines involve dance, song, music and audience interaction and participation.

“The pacing of the show is energetic and there is a lot of visual action,” he said.

Hart has been a puppeteer for 30 years. Before starting his own business

with his wife, Mary Ann, Hart was head puppeteer at the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta for 11 years.

Hart was attracted to the craft when he saw shows presented by European and Asian puppet companies at an international festival.

"Because they were performing to an international audience, their shows focused on visual action and depiction rather than dialogue or language,” Hart explained. “This really brought out the idea of giving a craft object, or the puppet, the illusion of life. It was a fascinating experience. It was like watching special effects — but done live and with an appreciable amount of skill."

Hart said that experience has influenced his shows ever since.

“This is not a ‘sit quietly and watch show’ that I will be doing, but a performance that invites the audience,” he said.

Hart and his puppets will be performing next to the International Food Court on the festival grounds. Performances run about 20-25 minutes for each hour of the festival.

Back by popular demand Festival-goers will get an opportunity to chat with "Barney" and "Gomer," portrayed by actors with "Memories of Mayberry." "Barney Fife" and "Gomer Pyle" will be part of the strolling entertainment offered both days of the festival. Other strolling entertainment will be provided by characters from the Georgia Renaissance Festival, the balloon art of The Magic and of Mr. Me, Peter Hart and The Atlanta Puppet Show, Nick's Kids, and the characters from the new movie "Hop."

Couple sells treats any pooch would prefer MARIETTA — Bob Otis and his fiance Sonia Beard are selling treats your dog will love at this year’s Cherry Blossom Festival. But beware. The treats are so good, they warn, you might just lose a finger if you don’t move quickly enough to get out of the way.

That’s the theory behind the name of their business, Lose a Finger LLC: “The treats are really good, so if you’re going to feed them to your dog, you should watch your fingers,” Otis said.

A professional barbecue cook who regularly enters competitions, Otis and his fiance Sonia Beard got a new puppy last summer and were discouraged they couldn’t find tasty, preservative free, inexpensive treats. So, they decided to make their own. They presented the treats as Christmas gifts to pets of friends and family.

“They called us back and said, ‘These are fantastic. Why aren’t you selling them?’ By New Year’s we decided to make it a business,” Otis said.

The couple, who lives in Marietta, has participated in several festivals since and is the only pet food vendor invited to participate in the upcoming Fabulous Food Show in Ohio, the Midwest’s largest culinary celebration.

Otis applies the same technique he uses in his professional barbecue cooking for the meat that goes in the treats, minus injections, marinades and rubs.

Beard uses a food processor to grind up the meat and adds other ingredients like whole wheat flour, milk and baking powder. The treats are sold in six flavors that each come in small or large sizes: slow smoked brisket, slow smoked pork, slow smoked turkey, cheddar cheese bacon, crunchy peanut butter and funky monkey, which includes bananas and peanut butter.

Grandpa Larry carves up creations for festival

DOTHAN — The locals around here might be celebrating 30 years of the Cherry Blossom Festival, but Dothan, Ala., residents Larry and Connie Skeen will set up shop for the first time at this year’s festival.

Grandpa’s Creations was carved out about two years ago after Larry, a retiree from work at UPS and wife, Connie, retired from a large Baptist church, wanted to put his handiwork into some fancy art work.

What can be seen at Booths 85 and 86 is an assortment of wooden signs, pens, patio table lights, spigot and bucket plaques, whistle key chains, candle holders, and book ends and much more.

All of Grandpa’s Creations are carved out, chiseled and shaved up at Larry’s wood shop at his home in Alabama.

The solar lights he sells are on a wood base and often have different figurines attached to them and some come with funny sayings, too.

“My biggest sellers are probably the yard signs and wooden signs. One of my most requested humor signs says: “I’m retired! I was tired yesterday and I’m tired again today,” as Larry said with a chuckle.

“We do eight or nine shows a year, most of them in Georgia, but this will be our first year at the Cherry Blossom and we are looking forward to it.”

Connie will be selling her handiwork at the festival as well. She makes play food for kids out of felt and flannel and she calls it deli food. The Skeen’s 3year-old grandson Alex loves playing with the deli food, whether it is the hamburger, hot dog, fruit. The deli food is a hot item with kids at other festivals as well.

Monastery offers sneak peak at visitor’s center CONYERS — Though the Cherry Blossom Festival has been operating for 30 years, this is the first time the Monastery of the Holy Spirit, based in Conyers, will have a presence at the event.

The monastery will have a booth displaying bonsai trees, some of which will be for sale. The monks will also be selling food products made at the monastery (or at other monasteries) including fudge, fruit cake, biscotti and jam.

Monastery of the Holy Spirit business manager Jim Burnham, who is not a monk, said that from an economic development standpoint having a booth at the Cherry Blossom Festival is beneficial.

In May the monastery is opening a new visitor's center which will feature a cafe, a new Abbey Store, an expanded bonsai and nursery space, a museum on

the history of monasticism and a large multi-purpose meeting room.

The new Abbey Store will feature an expanded inventory, including outdoor items like bird baths, bird houses and kites, along with items related to hiking such as T-shirts and hats.

The center will be located on the monastery grounds at 2625 Highway 212 in Conyers.

“They thought this would be a good opportunity for us to publicize it a little bit,” said Burnham.

Burnham said he hopes to have an audio visual presentation about the visitor center available for viewing at the Cherry Blossom Festival.

“Our main purpose isn’t to sell stuff, but to make people more aware of the monastery,” said Burnham. “I meet people in Conyers all the time who have heard of it but who have never been out there.”

The Monastery of the Holy Spirit will also be selling food products, such as biscotti, at the festival.
