Duluth middle school named after Coleman

SUWANEE — The first school in Gwinnett to focus on arts along with the science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, components was named on Thursday at the BOE meeting.

It will be Coleman Middle School, named after State Representative Brooks Brooks Coleman Coleman, R-Duluth, who serves as chairman of the State

House Education Committee. Coleman has served that area as a legislator for more than 20 years and previously worked in several local school and district leadership roles in GCPS. The school will offer Gwinnett’s first middle school dance program along with the first districtdeveloped Makerspace,

And in America, “there’s literally no goal too big to shoot for,” he said. “Opportunities and possibilities beyond anything you can imagine await each and every one of you,” said Kemp, who has been Secretary of State since 2010 after he was appointed by Gov. Sonny Perdue. The emotional remarks came from Olivia Mugenga, originally from Rwanda. She praised her father, Joseph Mugenga, who raised four daughters on his own after losing his wife in the Rwandan genocide. Mugenga said her father walked 11 miles to school when he was a boy, and graduated with an MBA from a U.S. college. “He was determined to give us an education,” Mugenga said. Mugenga said her father sent his children to school in Belgium and later to the U.S. for college, despite being wrongfully imprisoned,. One of her sisters, Sandrine Irankunda, graduated from
