The court fined him $1,598, imprisoned him for 24 hours and sentenced him to 12 months probation. It’s unclear what Howard did to violate his probation that landed him in jail

Feb. 15, but he wasn’t there long. Volkodav said officials realized he was suffering a medical emergency less than eight hours into his stay and took him to Gwinnett County Medical Center. Records show he left the jail at 11:32 a.m. Feb. 16. He died in the hospital a day later, according to an

online obituary. Friends and family held a funeral for Howard at Chestnut Mountain Church in Flowery Branch Monday. His Facebook timeline was flooded with mourning posts and memories on that day. “Right after we buried Christopher Cody Howard, we looked up in the sky and saw a rainbow,

Officials still hope to ID bones found 2 years ago BY CAILIN O’BRIEN cailin.obrien@gwinnettdailypost.com

The Gwinnett Medical Examiner’s office needs help identifying the skeleton of a man found in some Buford woods nearly two years ago, said Gwinnett police Cpl. Deon Washington. When the remains were found July 2015 in a wooded area between Satellite Boulevard and Buford Highway, they were already old. Washington said they’d likely been there for “several years.” That makes identifying the body a bit more difficult. “No clothing or personal effects were located due to the amount of time the man was at the location,” Washington said. The medical examiner estimates the man was between 25 and 40 years old when he died and likely stood anywhere from 5-foot-3 to 5-foot-7. His teeth had several composite fillings, and he had See BONES, Page 3A

Pollen spiking early; season may be rough BY CAILIN O’BRIEN cailin.obrien@gwinnettdailypost.com

Gwinnett and the rest of metro Atlanta could face a rough allergy season ahead, according to a local allergist. Atlanta Allergy and Asthma, the largest allergy group in the area, estimated Monday’s pollen count to be 1,289 grains of pollen per cubic centimeter of air. That’s a lot of pollen — and it doesn’t bode well for the impending allergy season. For context, Atlanta Allergy and Asthma considers any count between 90 and 1,499 to be a high concentration of pollen. Extreme concentrations are considered counts of 1,500 and higher. Monday’s pollen count didn’t quite reach See POLLEN, Page 7A
