You can come in and order a plain biscuit, a biscuit with breakfast meat (chicken, steak, sausage link, tenderloin, ham, sausage patty or bacon) or a whole platter with biscuit, eggs, and plain, cheese or butter grits, meat and gravy. Cafe isn’t just a restaurant. It’s a community gathering spot. Free live music is offered several nights a month. Many use two words to describe Boudreaux’s menu: authentic and esoteric. Boudreaux’s gets a fresh supply of seafood weekly, and the products are handselected from vendors. The menu is 80 percent Cajun and 20 percent creole. Menu items and market goods are genuine Eastern European, featuring many dishes and items from Germany, Italy, Bosnia

“We try to get as many authentic European items here as possible, and I only bring the best to the cafe and market,” Mustic said. Menu: The breads and sausages are handmade either on the premises or in a local bakery less than a mile away. Only veal and beef are used to make the sausages, and all of the dishes are true eastern European dishes and

served in generous portions. Sauces and spices are authentic eastern European mixes, and the coffees are Italian and very popular among patrons. Performances of ‘Scheherazade’ end this weekend Beautiful music, witty dialogue, and a strong female role model made “Scheherazade” the perfect choice for the Actor’s Edge spring performances at the Red Clay Theatre in Duluth, according to Artistic Director and Founder Pat Padrick. Audiences can enjoy this musical performed by the young theatre students for one more weekend. There will be shows today and Saturday at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m. The Red Clay Theatre is located at 3116 Main St. in Duluth. The idea of performing “Scheherazade” came to the Actor’s Edge director Pat Padrick as she was searching for something different for her students to perform. Padrick said, “I thought that other parents, like me, were getting a little weary of seeing another version of ‘High School Musical,’ although it’s a wonderful show. In my search for something else, it appears I wandered not just off the beaten path but off the map altogether.” As Padrick began talking up the idea the show, she was met with silence and blank stares. “Most folks not only didn’t know who ‘Scheherazade’ was, they didn’t have any idea how to say her name. We decided to take the plunge anyway and bring this fun and entertaining story to life.” “Entertaining” is the key word for this tale. Written by Susan Pargman with music and lyrics by Bill Francoeur, “Scheherazade” is a great show to introduce younger members of the family to musical theatre. It is the story of a very brave, quickwitted and creative young maiden who plots to change the heart of an enraged king by weaving tales to transform his heart and mind.

‘5th Quarter’ proves to be less hoorah and more ho-hum The 5th Quarter (PG-13) ★★★ ★★ It’s utterly impossible for anyone with even a sliver of a heart to sit through “The 5th Quarter” and not be moved. On a strictly human interest level, there are few stories more powerful than this one. There’s death, sports uplift, family strife and rebirth and every single second of it is presented with the utmost sincerity and good intentions. The problem with intent and its often opposite, execution — at least in the medium of film — is that the former can overpower the latter and turn what should be inspirational and life-affirming into some-

It was a major missed opportunity. Bieber could have made another “Brian’s Song” but instead he churned out a weaker version of “The Blind Side.” Taking his cue from every overproduced sports drama of the last 20 years, Bieber turns “The 5th Quarter” into a football movie with minor family dysfunction embellishments and alcoholism sidebars. The movie concentrates on Luke’s brother Jon (Ryan Merriman) — a Wake Forest linebacker who dons his brother’s No. 5 jersey and dedicates the season to his memory. The movie then isn’t so much about the tragic death of a child and its positive ripples as it is about a college football team marching toward its first winning sea-

son in two decades. It’s less hoorah and more ho-hum. We’ve been there and we’ve done that far more than enough already. From the time it starts until it ends some 90 minutes later, there is maybe a minute’s worth of screen time that isn’t accompanied by music of some sort. All of it is instructional and most it is intrusive. Original slow songs with sad lyrics are played overtop of important passages of dialogue. Hard rock and pop songs are present during the car crash scene and whenever weight-lifting or football is seen. Syrupy, overwrought strings fill the remainder. Bieber assumes his audience is emotionally bereft and/or ignorant and feels the need to prompt it at every

turn. Next to flashback (employed here in mercifully short supply), score and soundtrack is the most go-to crutch when trying to patch holes in screenplays and this one is total Swiss cheese. “The 5th Quarter” should have been about five people who were saved and not about football. If you’d like to honor the memory of Luke Abbate and his intent, you have the option to visit this website: lukeabbate5thquarter.org. It benefits victims of teen car crashes — a most noble, honorable and worthy cause. Or you can see this film and get a distorted version of the truth while lining a studio’s pockets. Sam No. 1), a floundering, unfocused would-be novelist who is about to turn 30. Wandering aimlessly trying to find the meaning of his life — whatever that is — Sam No. 1 takes it upon himself to rescue Rasheen (Michael Algieri), a black toddler who is separated from his foster family on the subway. Never mind what he’s doing is technically kidnapping, Sam No. 1 is in desperate need of a project — that will give him something to do. In addition to believing he’s a humanitarian, Sam No. 1 notices that Rasheen has real talent as an artist and that he’s a major babe magnet. In short order Sam No. 1 uses Rasheen to get

in with a girl both from and named Mississippi (Kate Mara), a waitress/cabaret singer. Couple No. 2 features Sam No. 2 (Tony Hale), an overly sensitive office drone type who wants to save and then marry coworker Annie (Malin Ackerman). Stricken with alopecia and bad taste in men, Annie is also Sam No. 1’s best friend who is never at a loss when offering romantic and professional advise to him. Either she’s incompetent or he’s not listening. The third couple includes Mary (Zoe Kazan) another one of Sam No. 1’s gal pals who has either the hardest or

simplest dilemma of the bunch. Mary’s not-quite-aboyfriend Charlie (Pablo Schreiber) has just returned from L.A. and he thinks the two of them should pull up stakes and relocate. Mind you, he has no solid career prospects in L.A. as of yet and she’s in love with all things Manhattan. Theirs is a deadend, one-note subplot. Like the overly precious title, the film’s dialogue is a non-stop barrage of quirky one-liners meant to deliver mantra-like heft and spiritual awareness but actually come off like generic fortune cookie true-isms. No one in the real world — save for fictional TV 20-somethings

— talk, act or think like they do and Radnor’s pieeyed approach to his material makes it all the more glaringly awkward. There are just enough glimmers of hope in Ackerman, Hale and Mara’s performances (but not his own) to suggest that Radnor could give this filmmaking thing another stab with far better results. What he’ll need to do first is check out other films made by other sitcom leading men — Zach Braff’s “Garden State” and David Schwimmer’s upcoming “Trust” — and take note that those movies look or feel like nothing he or anyone else is already doing on TV.
