GWINNETTTASTES A selection of local eateries recently featured in the Gwinnett Daily Post: • Tim’s Rib Joint Walking into Tim’s Rib Joint feels like arriving at a neighborhood backyard barbecue. Owner Tim White wanted a rustic feel for the barbecue joint, which serves sandwiches, dinner combos and more. One favorite is Tim’s Big Plate, which features pulled pork, beef brisket, chicken and two sides. Be sure to try Tim’s Potato Salad — it’s been featured in a Duke’s Mayonnaise commercial. 465 Dacula Road, Dacula. 770-236-9580 • Mazzy’s Owner Lee Christiansen has set up an open, spacious place to watch your favorite teams play on TV. But he also wanted a menu that strived for more than tradi-
tional pub fare. Mazzy’s does just that, with wings and burgers being joined by daily specials and signature dishes such as grouper, fish tacos and meatloaf, which is made from his grandmother’s recipe. Other customer favorites are the bourbon chicken platter and the Old Fashioned burger. Mazzy’s has 19 beers on tap and 53 varieties available in bottles. 7160 Jimmy Carter Blvd., Norcross. 678-822-9888 • Brown Bag Deli Inspired by his son-in-law’s deli business in Pennsylvania, owner Joe Stackhouse created the Brown Bag Deli with a specialty in creating a variety of New York style sandwiches. The breakfast menu offers a diverse amount of options to choose from, such as a spinach, egg and a cheese sunrise sandwich. For lunch, customers
prefer the California club, reuben and hot pastrami. Brown Bag Deli's desserts include brownies, cheesecakes, the Big Apple Pie and the Big New York black and white cookie. 340 Town Center Ave., Suite A2, Suwanee. 678-682-3496 • Luciano’s Executive Chef John Soilis revamps the menu of the upscale eatery every three to four months to coincide with seasons and what ingredients are available fresh. A popular dish is the scallops and artichokes, which is made with linguine, pancetta and a garlic lemon butter sauce. Another popular menu item is the flatbread, which comes with a variety of toppings, including pepperoni, smoked chicken, prosciutto and more. Pasta, salads, steak and seafood dishes round
out the dinner menu, while the lunch menu includes paninis. 6555 Sugarloaf Parkway, Suite 309, Duluth. 770-2551727 • Maracas Cantina Maracas Cantina, known for its various fish platters, combines Dominican, Mexican, Portuguese and Cuban flavors, resulting in an exotic and rich Latin fusion. One popular menu selection is the Pescado Culiacan, a tilapia filet marinated with herbs and garlic in spicy chipotle-habanero sauce and bacon wrapped shrimp smothered in jalapeno pepper cheese. The California Burrito, another popular item, is stuffed with rice, black beans, lettuce, tomato, avocado, sour cream and a choice of meat. 320 Town Center Ave., Suwanee. 678-765-6611

ART BEAT Lionheart offers ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ When Lionheart Theatre’s curtain rises Thursday for six performances of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” director Jason Caldwell will be honoring a story that has greatly affected his life and art. “Yes, I’m a geek, and proud of it,” Caldwell said. “This story by C.S. Lewis had me enthralled when I read it. Coupled with ‘The Hobbit,’ the story led me on a lifelong love of fantasy and sci-fi literature.” Lionheart’s cast of approximately 30 actors will interpret the allegorical story of sacrifice and rebirth the weekend before Christmas. Performances will be held on Dec. 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m.; on Dec. 18 at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; and on Dec. 19 at 2:30 p.m. The theatre is located at 10 College St. in Historic Downtown Norcross. “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” is a challenge for Caldwell in part because the story requires stage combat. “This is the largest cast I have ever directed,” Caldwell said, “and that in itself is a logistical challenge. But there is also stage combat. I have stage combat experience, but I was a little leery of teaching younger kids the basics of how to fight on stage. However, they have taken what I have given, practiced a lot, and the battle scene towards the end of the play is a wonderful thing to behold!” Caldwell has been with

Lionheart’s actors range in age from elementary school children to adults. “The actors have given their all to this show,” Caldwell said. “This is apparent as I watch the play unfold. Local theaters present holiday performances BY CAMIE YOUNG SENIOR WRITER camie.young @gwinnettdailypost.com
Two local theaters are putting the “jolly” in Holly Jolly Christmas with some funny stage performances. Instead of the usual ghost story, New London Theatre is bringing to the stage “The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society’s Production of A Christmas Carol.” As the long name suggests, the story is a take
on the Charles Dickens’ classic, but shows neighbors contending with an intrusive PA system and even a rap. “Another dramatic massacre that enthralls,” a press release from the Snellville theater says. In Duluth, New Dawn Theater presents “A Candle in the Window,” a story about stranded passengers at a railroad station who get a lesson from children nearby practicing a nativity scene. “It’s a great heartwarming show,” said Sherry Ingbritsen, presi-
dent and artistic director of the theater who is directing the show. After last week’s opening performances, “the audience has left in tears almost every night, but it’s not sad tears. It’s ‘aww.’ ... It’s a touch-your-hearttype play.” Both shows continue for the next two weekends. Performances are scheduled at New London Theatre, located at 2485 E. Main St. in Snellville, are scheduled for 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $12 in
Lionheart •From Page 5 “I like to show people my vision of how a story is told,” Caldwell said. “Everyone who reads a script sees something different, something subtle. You bring your vision to the process which is then altered somewhat as you listen to your actors who bring their own vision of their characters. It is amazing to be a part of and lead that chemistry. Surprisingly, people listen to me.” Tickets for the production are $10, and children
3 and under are free. Reservations are strongly suggested and can be made by calling 678-9388518 or by going online at www.lionhearttheatre.org. Also, part of the ticket sale proceeds will go to the Mary Payton’s Miracle Foundation, which helps families struggling with Batten’s Disease, and also funds research for finding a cure. Lionheart Theatre won’t rest after this play ends. Two great acting camps are being offered from Dec. 20-22. “Christmas Boot Camp” is for children
ages 4 to 11 and gives each child a chance to sing and act to favorite Christmas stories. This camp is held from 10 a.m. to noon. “Musical Theatre Camp” is for ages 9 to adult and allows campers to work on their singing technique from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Visit the website at www.lionhearttheatre.org for more details, fees, and to register. Natalie Portman, left, and Vincent Cassel are shown in a scene from “Black Swan.”
Portman gives intense performance in thriller ‘Black Swan’ Black Swan (R) ★★★★ ★ With his 1998 debut (“Pi”) and the 1999 creepycrawly, tripped-out “Requiem for a Dream,” director Darren Aronofsky staked claim to Alfred Hitchcock’s long-vacant psychological thriller mantle. He then went all loopy with the sci-fi twaddle that was “The Fountain” but redeemed himself with the melancholy, bare-knuckle grit of “The Wrestler.” “Black Swan” is to the world of ballet what “All About Eve” was to the movie business and makes for an excellent feminine bookend to “The Wrestler.” The lead and the three female supporting characters engage in some of the most brutal, narcissistic, mind-bending cat-fighting

er a more realized, emotional performance. Almost immediately Aronofsky sets the tone with jittery, multiple-angle camera work which amplifies Nina’s innate paranoia and also provides the audience with a dancer’s perspective. Whenever in the dance studio or on stage the filmmaker and his designers drain the sets and costumes of all color keeping everything bathed in muted blacks, grays and dull whites. It was a risky decision but ultimately adds to the overall feeling of dread and an almost dreamlike flatness. Having already more or less experienced what Nina is going through, Erica nonetheless adds to her daughter’s woes by piling on the pressure with incessant brow beating which escalates Nina’s propensity
for self-mutilation. As her only significant rival, Lily plays it smart by alternatively being naughty and nice to Nina, often at the same time. The night before an important run-through, Lily whisks Nina away from Erica’s dreary apartment for a night of drink, drugs and clubbing. This provides Nina with a much needed release valve but also delivers one whammy of a morning after thud. As serious, driven and intense as Portman and Aronofsky are regarding the material, the movie regularly and certainly unintentionally takes on an air of camp and kitsch distantly reminiscent of “Showgirls.” It’s not cheesy by any stretch, but is highly melodramatic and more than a bit exploitative. A prime example comes at the start of the third act with a steamy lesbian sex scene
that while key to the story is far more erotic than this type of film requires. Apart from Aronofsky’s considerable cult base and those of the various performers, “Black Swan” is not something with which mainstream audiences will identify. It’s not quite gruesome or jarring enough to qualify as horror, but is also far too visceral and graphic for those expecting an art film about ballet. The dancing isn’t (by design) perfect and if you go expecting to see a full-length realization of “Swan Lake,” you’ll be disappointed. The movie proudly defies categorization and does as good of a job at blurring fantasy and reality as any in recent memory. It more than achieves its goals and makes its point, albeit one that many might not care about in the least. (Fox Searchlight)

NOWSHOWING Recently reviewed films now playing in theaters: • Love and Other Drugs (R) Starting as a bawdy sex comedy and ending as a weepy disease drama, director Ed Zwick’s movie is all over the place but is worthy for its accurate portrayal of Parkinson’s disease and the performances of Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway. 2 stars — Michael Clark • Morning Glory (PG-13) Because it was penned by the same person who wrote “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Morning Glory” looks and feels a lot like its predecessor only for an a.m. news show. Rachel McAdams carries the entire production skillfully. 21⁄2 stars — MC • Unstoppable (PG-13) Bet-
ter than it should be, this action/thriller is bolstered by some get-it-done, blue-collar attitude and excellent chemistry shared by co-leads Denzel Washington and Chris Pine. 3 stars — MC

THEATER New report finds Broadway sustained by women, tourists THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK — A new report says Broadway theaters were sustained last season once again by tourists and women. The Broadway League study found that international and domestic tourists accounted for 63 percent of the roughly 12
million Broadway admissions from June 2009 through June 2010. About one-quarter of New York City’s estimated 8.6 million international visitors took in a Broadway show. The report also found that two-thirds of Broadway audiences were female, a new high. The study says almost 70 per-
cent of theatergoers who made the purchasing decisions were female. The data is based on audience questionnaires distributed throughout the 2009-10 Broadway season. The League is a clearinghouse for information on the business, demographics and economic impact of Broadway.
