BOE pleases residents with redistricting By Keith Farner keith.farner@gwinnettdailypost.com
SUWANEE — J. Alvin Wilbanks, who participated in his first redistricting process more than 50 years ago, called the process “akin to a goat-roping.” But in the end Thursday night, the Gwinnett MORE INSIDE County Board • GCS announces three new principals.................3A of Education and its CEO/ • Wilbanks receives contract Superintendent, extension, raise...............7A Wilbanks, made most of the several dozen people in the crowd happy. LILBURN — Sgt. Tim Allen began his presentation Thursday night with a note: “This seminar is not to scare you.” But reality, he made clear, can be scary. Scores of residents turned out to Providence Christian Academy, passing through the blue flashing lights of Lilburn Police Department cars at the entrance, to learn how best to survive active shooter situations. Those in attendance joined in growing numbers of metro Atlanta residents taking in such seminars. Allen acknowledged that
the odds of ending up faced with an active shooter are slim. But he said thinking bad things won’t happen is no way to be prepared. “There’s no profile of an active shooter,” he told the crowd. “Anybody in this room could be an active shooter.” The residents listened intently as Allen spoke, many of them taking diligent notes. Christine Peredney, a member of the Lilburn Woman’s Club, was among them. She planned to report back to her husband at home about what they could do. “I’m just interested in being informed,” the former teacher said after the Lilburn Police Officers listen in as Sgt. Tim Allen goes over strategies in an active shooter situation during Thursday’s active shooter

While Gwinnett didn’t catch the brunt of Wednesday’s wintry mix, there’s still a chance for residents to see snow since another bout of winter weather is on the way. The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory around 3 p.m. Thursday for numerous northern and central Georgia counties, including Gwinnett and its neighbors. The statement said temperatures will drop to near freezing today and remain at or below freezing through Saturday. Forecasters expect sleet and freezing rain to roll in this afternoon and transition into accumulating snow tonight and into Saturday. There could be 1 to 2 inches of snow and sleet along with up to a tenth of an inch of ice. The statement advises drivers to “be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities” and to use caution while driving.
