Fugitive puts Buford schools on lockdown Police: Man threatens to kill his mother, her animals

A Buford man who police said was high on drugs and threatened to kill his mother and her animals caused a lockdown of Buford area schools Tuesday afternoon. But this domes-

tic ordeal began hours earlier and is not over.

The fugitive wanted for Dustin aggravated York assault and false imprisonment was still

on the run from police late Tuesday afternoon after they captured a female accomplice who denied being involved but was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

The search lasted for several hours, spanned a large area mainly around Buford Highway and Thompson Mill Road,

Bomar named sole finalist for CID director

Duluth City Councilwoman Marsha Bomar is the last woman standing in the Gwinnett Village Community Improvement District’s search for a new executive director.

The CID named Bomar as the sole finalist to fill the position on Tuesday.

The district’s board of diMarsha rectors must wait 14 days Bomar before it can vote on hiring Bomar, but Gwinnett Village spokesman Joel Wascher said a special called meeting is expected to be held by the end of the month to deal with the issue.

Bomar would replace Chuck Warbington, who stepped down last month to become Lawrenceville’s city manager.

One day in 2006, Charles George was at the Gwinnett County airport, where he had his plane stored, and heard about an organization called Mercy Flight Southeast. The nonprofit connects volunteer pilots with people who need transportation to medical treatment across the country.

At the time, the Buford resident had a void in his life. His wife of 33 years, Susan, died five years earlier. She had breast cancer, a form that typically claims lives in about nine months.

Susan held on for five years — five years in which Charles settled into a retirement from IBM and dedicated himself to being her caregiver.

Flight is tied to fond memories of Charles’ and Susan’s marriage. In 1974, Charles talked his bosses into holding his job a year while he and the wife “lived out of the back” of a plane. They sold their house, took the money and took off.

They flew wherever they wanted, up and down the East Coast. When it got too cold, they headed south.

When the cash dried up, they got jobs and decamped for metro Atlanta.

They got rid of the plane.

Charles thought he’d flown enough and went decades without it.

Then in 2006, five years after Susan’s death, an opportunity came up to buy a plane. Then came the day at the airport in Lawrenceville.

He attended a meeting to get information about Mercy Flight Southeast. In it, he saw a chance

Ringleader convicted in Buford strangling case

After deliberating for about three hours, a Gwinnett jury on Friday convicted a woman of being the ringleader of a gruesome 2013 killing in Buford.

Her co-defendant then entered a negotiated plea for his case.

for killing 20-yearold Kayla Weil in a drug house on Cloud Street, was found Amy guilty on McGarity all counts, including malice murder and felony murder, according to Chief Assistant District Attorney Dan Mayfield.

Once Judge Ronnie K. Batchelor sentenced McGarity to life without parole plus five years, Cedric English pleaded guilty to helping her conceal the death. He was sentenced to three years in prison followed by seven years on probation.

McGary was convicted of beating Weil with a handgun before strangling her with an ethernet cable and, with the help of Eng-

lish, dumping the body at a closed park at Lake Lanier.

The other defendant, Cody Williams, was convicted in March on all counts, including murder, for his involvement in helping McGarity. Sentencing was deferred at that time. Prior to the trial of McGarity and English, Williams agreed to testify against them in return for a sentence of life with the

The suspects allegedly threw the property over the fence and retreated into the woods.

Officers and K-9s saturated the area, the news release said.

They found Irving Lewis Saunders, 17, who allegedly began fighting and kicking the officers as they arrested him.

Jashon Aaron Samuels, 18, also turned up, as did Thoushal Nakill Lucas, 19.

The victim from Cash America Pawn identified all four suspects and said Samuels was the one who punched him in the face, police said. The victim from Cubesmart reportedly identified Saunders and Samuels as the two who robbed him.

A K-9 meanwhile found the handgun in the woods.

All of the items stolen were returned to the victims.

Residents displaced after fire at Missing Snellville man’s town home near Lake Lanier body found on Lake Lanier

A handful of residents at a town home building near Lake Lanier were displaced after a fire heavily damaged two of the homes and led to smoke, heat and water damage in two adjoining units Tuesday night.

Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services Capt. Tommy Rutledge said firefighters responded to the fire on the 1904 block of Pine Tree Drive in unincorporated Buford at 6:19 p.m. and found heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of the building.

“Firefighters quickly deployed attack hose lines and entered the burning build-

ing to combat the blaze and conduct a primary search,” Rutledge said. “Crews were forced to back out several minutes later due to advancing flames and a partial collapse.

“Firefighters flowed water from multiple hose lines and an aerial ladder device to bring the fire under control and protect exposures.”

Firefighters extinguished the fire after battling it for about 30 minutes, Rutledge said. He said investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire. Paramedics checked out and released one woman who had minor exposure to smoke products at the scene. The fire department spokesman said no other injuries were reported.

Georgia Department of Natural Resources rangers recovered the body of a 57-year-old Snellville man who had been missing for more than a week at Lake Lanier on Monday.

Officials had been searching for Jerry Kornmeier since his empty boat was found adrift outside the lake’s Cocktail Cove on April 30. Hall and Forsyth county sheriff’s deputies, as well as Hall County fire officials, helped rangers search the lake with sonar and along the coastline for the body for days before scaling the search back to shoreline searches Thursday.

Then rangers got a lead Monday morning.

“Just before 10 a.m., a boater called 911 to report a body in the water just south and outside of Cocktail Cove,” DNR Law Enforcement Division spokesman Mark McKinnon said in a statement. “Rangers

quickly arrived and made the recovery.”

McKinnon said the DNR Law Enforcement Division’s Critical Incident Reconstruction Team is now investigating the incident and officials are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Grayson man killed in wreck Sunday

The Atlanta Police Department is investing a single-car wreck that killed a Grayson man early Sunday morning.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office told the Daily Post on Monday that the victim was 28-year-old Christopher Porter. He was killed after his car ran off the road at 2:30 a.m. on Ga. Highway 400 near Lenox Road. The car reportedly was pulled by crane from a tree-lined area along the road.

Speed appears to be the leading cause for the crash, authorities have said.

Possible link between migraines, glaucoma DEAR DR. ROACH: Recently a reader was asking for help with chronic migraine that was little helped by various medications.

I also suffer from migraines, and they have really diminished since my diagnosis of normal pressure glaucoma and the use of eyedrops, which have brought that pressure down several points. My pressures were at the high end of the normal range.

I still get migraines, but far less often. Most importantly, I do not wake up with a headache every day, like I used to. What a relief!

Maybe there are others like me. The diagnosis came after irreversible eye damage. Perhaps people with daily migraines, especially when they wake up in the morning, should be referred to an eye specialist for a visual field test. It might be the pressure in the eyeballs that’s causing the headaches.

— J.G. ANSWER: Glaucoma is a common eye condition of damage to the retina, usually but not always associated with elevated pressure inside the eye. Since damage to the retina can occur at pressures that are within the broad range of “normal,” as it did in your case, it’s appropriate for adults to be periodically evaluated, even in the absence of symptoms.

Some groups recommend every-other-year screening between ages 40 and 60, and annually after age 60.

Other groups, including the influential U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, don’t make a specific recommendation. However, in the presence of eye symptoms, a regular exam is essential, regardless of age.

Many studies have found a link between glaucoma and migraine headache, especially glaucoma in people whose measured eye pressures usually are normal. Others have not found a link. However, I think it very reasonable for a person with migraine to be sure he or she has seen an eye professional for both a pressure measurement and a retinal exam to look for any damage to the retina.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am age 82 and in reasonably good health and weight.

However, my cardiologist advises me not to add salt to any dish. I have oatmeal (not instant) two or three times each week. I am not too worried about the quantity, but am more curious about why the directions say to add a dash of salt to oatmeal before cooking?

— J.K. ANSWER: Salt is not necessary for oatmeal.

Salt is in the recipe simply because many people don’t like the taste of oatmeal without salt. If you like it without salt, that’s fine.

You should speak to your daughter about this.

Explain how you feel about being open and honest about matters concerning her body, growth and health. Tell her that this openness made her friend’s mother uncomfortable.

You could try to explain to the other mother that you are not trying to influence or parent her daughter, but ultimately it will be this mother’s choice whether to permit her daughter to be exposed to people who think differently than she does. She doesn’t seem to understand that exposure to other views can strengthen a family’s values rather than dilute them.

world Canadian wildfire eases, production of oil resumes FORT MCMURRAY/ EDMONTON, Alberta — Oil sands companies around the Canadian energy center of Fort McMurray began to resume production on Tuesday after an out-of-control wildfire forced a shutdown a week ago, and energy executives met with province leaders who reported the town was less damaged than first feared.

The fire continued to grow on Tuesday, but it has moved far enough away from the oil sands’ sites to allow companies to begin resuming production.

Royal Dutch Shell Plc became the first company to resume its operation in the center of Canada’s oil sands region, while Enbridge Inc began inspecting its facilities and prepared plans to restart operations shuttered during the blaze.

Sanders beats Clinton in West Virginia

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK — U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders defeated Hillary Clinton in the West Virginia primary on Tuesday, slowing her march toward the party’s nomination.

Despite the setback, Clinton is still heavily favored to become the Democratic candidate in the Nov. 8 election.

But Tuesday’s loss could signal trouble for Clinton with working-class voters in the U.S. Rust Belt, where she will need to prevail in key states such as Ohio and Pennsylvania when she takes on Trump in the general election.

Clinton in March said the country would “put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business” at an Ohio town hall in a comment that appeared to hurt her with voters in coalmining states such as West Virginia.

Ancient lava bubbles reveal conditions on primordial Earth

WASHINGTON — Tiny bubbles that formed inside volcanic rock 2.7 billion years ago are providing big insights into the conditions on primordial Earth.

Scientists said an analysis of gas bubbles trapped in ancient basalt rock that formed from ancient lava flows in western Australia showed the planet back then possessed a much thinner atmosphere, with air

In addition to the fainter sun, the air lacked oxygen, the moon was closer so tides were stronger, Earth spun more quickly so days were shorter, and the only life forms were single-cell microbes, said study leader Sanjoy Som, CEO of Seattle-based Blue Marble Space, a nonprofit organization focusing on space science research, education and public outreach.

The findings demonstrate that “a planetary environment com-

pletely different than modern Earth can sustain life on its surface,” said Som, who worked on the study while at the University of Washingto​n and is now based at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California.

“Life doesn’t need conditions like modern Earth to survive and thrive. This is important in our quest for habitable environments in extra-solar planets,” Som added.

The scientists used sophisticated scanning technology to analyze

the size and distribution of bubbles within the ancient lava rock found along the shores of Australia’s Beasley River that solidified at sea level.

Lava flows cool rapidly from top and bottom, with bubbles trapped at the bottom being smaller than those at the top. The size difference in these bubbles provided a record of the atmospheric pressure pushing down on the molten rock as it cooled, the researchers said.

A shadow cabinet for Trump Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has broken just about every political rule and precedent this election cycle, so what difference would it make if he broke one more?

If Trump wants to gain credibility with voters who are either wary of or vehemently opposed to him becoming president, he should borrow from the British system and name a shadow Cal cabinet.

Thomas For those unfamiliar with the term, a British shadow cabinet is made up of a group of senior people from the opposition party who create an alternative cabinet to that of the government. The role of shadow ministers is to criticize government ministers. If their party wins a majority in a future election, most are frequently appointed to cabinet positions.

If Trump were to adopt such a strategy now, it would present him with several opportunities. First, each of his appointees, presumably, would be people with the knowledge and experience Trump lacks. Second, each of his shadow cabinet members could focus on what they consider the failures of a particular government agency or program and offer alternatives to make it better. Third, some of Trump’s shadow cabinet could recommend doing away with cabinet agencies and programs by making the case that they cost too much and fail to live up to their purpose.

In Britain, the shadow cabinet is presided over by the opposition leader.

In Trump’s shadow cabinet, his choice for vice president, who should be named before the convention to allow the public time to become comfortable with his choice, might be the one to keep his people focused on their goal. Should Trump win, all of the shadow cabinet members could be nominated to real cabinet positions.

How would this work? The shadow minister for education could make the case for the dissolution of the unnecessary Department of Education, which was Jimmy Carter’s promise to the teachers unions in 1976 in order to gain their endorsement. DOE educates no one and is another one of those Washington bureaucracies that thinks it knows better than local school districts and parents how best to educate. The shadow minister might also make the case for school choice, focusing on poor and minority children trapped in failing government schools whose liberation would offer them a chance to succeed.

The shadow minister for defense would look at wasteful spending by the military and by members of Congress who like to spend money on defense projects in their states and districts for things the military doesn’t want or need. Stories of overpriced planes and ships and long delays are legion. The F-35 fighter jet is just one of many bad examples. The airplane has been way behind schedule in development and cost overruns have added to the price, now around $1 trillion. A withering 2015 report by the National Security Network, a D.C.-based think tank, according to Fortune.com, maintains that “The F-35 fighter jet will find itself outmaneuvered, outgunned, out of range, and visible to enemy sensors.”

This idea can be sold to voters based not only on their antipathy to Washington, which Trump’s campaign has helped channel, but also for the sake of coming generations who will be saddled with the bill. Are we so selfish that we want ours now without concern for the financial burden we are placing on our grandchildren and their kids?

Never a bad time to say ‘thanks’ I believe there is a lot of thankfulness in the world, but much of it comes through an inner monologue.

It’s not often we get to give our thanks aloud. Some of that comes from the hectic pace in which we live. Never enough time to get everything done, especially something as important as offering profound appreciation to people who have helped and nutured us. And giving thanks can also be intimidating; sometimes it is difficult to share feelings so heartfelt.

So many of us walk around with thankful hearts, and some folks pick up on that appreciation even when it isn’t always spoken. But every once in a while, the opportunity to openly and publicly give thanks presents itself, and when it does it is a very special thing.

We are embarking on one of those times soon. At the many local high school graduations that are set to occur in the com-

For those of us not in the Hall of Fame or atop our graduating class, the chance to express our thankfulness so publicly is tougher to come by. But it doesn’t mean that our expressions are any less appreciated.

Keep that in mind the next time you see someone you are thankful for, and take time to verbalize what your heart already knows.

We have all heard about home invasions committed by people posing as police.

Because he put down his weapon 21 seconds after the incident started, it appears to me that Echols misidentified the people in his house and reacted out of natural fear to men in his house, then got his wits together and surrendered.

It was a reaction to events, not deliberate actions on his part to harm the police.

I understand that the assault charges are necessary: at least initially, he fired at them. I also hope that the county prosecutor takes into consideration the 21 seconds from start to finish and drops the three assault charges, and charges him only with whatever else he was doing that initiated the warrant. For what it’s worth, I would also like Echols to apologize for his actions.

Thank God no one was hurt. Let’s learn from it and move on.

Ex-South Gwinnett teacher turns herself in to police

Two and a half weeks after Therese Gunn resigned from South Gwinnett High School, she turned herself in to the Gwinnett County jail on Friday evening.

Gunn, 53, of Grayson was arrested on charges of sexual assault Therese and three Gunn counts of contributing to the delin-

quency of a minor after an alleged sexual relationship with a 17-year-old male student. Gunn turned herself in at 6:22 p.m. shortly after arrest warrants were signed. She was released on a $21,700 bond at 1:06 a.m. on Saturday.

They stayed there until they moved to Sugar Hill, GA to be closer to family in Atlanta. also found that the teacher hosted a party at her home in Grayson, and during the party, the teacher allowed the 17-year-old and two female students to smoke marijuana under her direct supervision.

According to the detective, the teacher smoked marijuana as well.

Mary loved life and life loved her. She was a big NFL fan and especially loved Kenny Stabler. After the death of her sister Cheryl, Mary turned to baseball always rooting for the Atlanta Braves. She loved music and was the first one on the dance floor showing up any competitor. She traveled, many places with her mother and her sister April including California, Hawaii, New York, and Canada. One of her best trips was to Las Vegas where she attended a Garth Brooks concert.

Mary went to school/ work from the age of 4.

Over her life she attended the Group Aid For Retarded Children, MARC, Brewer Center in Mobile, Alabama, enjoying Special Olympic swimming, bowling and dancing. In 1989 she and her mother moved to Norcross, Georgia where she attended Hi Hope Service Center in Lawrenceville for over 20 years. She worked at Sears, Olive Garden and California Dreaming with the support of a work coach from Hi-Hope.

Mary lived with April and Willie for twelve years after her mother died in 2002. Then in 2013 due to her declining abilities/ health, Mary came back to Mobile to live at Mulherin Custodial Home where she was reunited with friends from childhood.

KENNESAW — When the Collins Hill players sprang out of their dugout in celebration, there was no question about their main target.

Freshman second baseman Nasim Nunez was the unlikely hero and the Eagles are still alive in their Class AAAAAA state quarterfinal baseball series with Harrison.

Nunez, Collins Hill’s No. 9 hitter, came through on a 0-2 pitch with two outs in the seventh inning to give the Eagles a 5-4 victory in the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader and force a deciding contest today.

The teams return to Harrison’s Don Shaw Field for a 6 p.m. game, with Collins Hill serving as the designated home team after winning a coin flip.

Harrison jumped to a big early lead en route to an 8-3 victory in the doubleheader opener and it looked like Collins Hill might be eliminated quickly after winning its first two playoff series with sweeps.

The Eagles, though, scored two firstinning runs in the second game and had another two-run cushion before Harrison battled back to tie.

ALPHARETTA — In the state playoffs, everyone expects tough competition.

Parkview boys soccer had just a little more on its plate than the other teams in the state semifinals — in facing the No. 1 squad in the country.

No problem.

With a second half that featured two goals in the span of five minutes, Parkview secured a 2-0 win over previously undefeated Chattahoochee on Tuesday night, punching its ticket to the Class AAAAAA final.

“If we played them 10 times, we might go 5-5,” Parkview head coach Daniel Klinect said. “But we were the better team tonight and my guys listened to what we

remained going into the second half. What the Panthers saw led to some slight adjustments at halftime.

“We figured if we could get a deep second man running like we did, we would catch them because they weren’t tracking them,” Klinect said.

“Both goals were from a deep run that we got in behind. I give my boys credit for listening to what we told them at halftime. We think we really took them out of what they like to do.”

NORCROSS — All season long, Norcross has been making its mark with its unique style of baseball.

In Tuesday’s Class AAAAAA state quarterfinal doubleheader against Etowah, the Blue Devils executed their small-ball style perfectly.

First, they rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh in the opener, capped by Patrick Hutton’s hit-and-run single that gave them a 3-2 walk-off victory.

Then, a couple of fortunate hops and enough speed in the top of the eighth helped Norcross earn a 2-1 extra-inning win to get the sweep at home.

As a result, the Blue Devils (27-6) are headed to the state semifinals for the first time since 1963, and will play host to Walton in a best-of-three series beginning Monday.

“It’s like I always (say), if we play our game, we have an opportunity to win,” Norcross coach Reggie Stancil said.

“Our pitchers have given us an opportunity to win the games, and we’re going to find a way to score enough runs.”

Both Norcross starters Graeme Stinson and Fletcher Byrd gave their team a chance to win with six quality innings each to battle Etowah (22-9) starters Bryce O’Brien and Sawyer Gipson-Long pitch-for-pitch.

Lovett finally ends Spartan reign

NORCROSS — The Greater Atlanta Christian girls soccer team’s quest for a third consecutive state title came to an end Tuesday night in the Class AA state semifinals.

Lovett — whom GAC defeated in the last two state finals — upended the host Spartans 3-1 to

advance to the state championship game.

Vanderbilt signee Grace Jackson scored in the first half for Lovett and assisted on both second half goals.

The Lions (12-5-1) will face St. Vincent’s — a 4-2 winner over Pace Academy — on Friday in the state finals in Macon.

“They played great as a team but it’s really on the backs of two lovely people,” GAC head

coach Mike Giuliano said. “(Lovett head coach Will Lozier) had a great gameplan, one that it took us awhile to adjust to and I don’t know if we ever completely adjusted to it, and Grace showed why she’s one of the best players in the southeast.

Coaching college basketball is in the family bloodline.

Anderson’s grandfather is the legendary Lefty Driesell, who retired in 2003 after 41 years as a head coach at Davidson, Maryland, James Madison and Georgia State. Anderson also has an uncle and two cousins in the college coaching ranks.

After he finished playing at Georgia Tech, Anderson was an assistant coach at Waycross College, but decided to take a break from the sport and signed up for the Peace Corps. He spent 27 months in Cambodia, teaching middle schoolers in a small village at the foothills of the Cardamom Mountain.

“I don’t know how I ended up (signing up for the Peace Corps), but it was the best decision I ever made,” Anderson said. “I taught English and was the community health educator. I learned to speak the language and I still keep in touch with my host family.”

He also helped build a basketball court at the school.

“When I got back from Cambodia, I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to get back into basketball or go back to school,” Anderson said. “I really missed basketball.”

Anderson ended up as an assistant coach at the University of North Georgia and was nearing the end of his first year there when Thigpen reached out.

But it was still a fairly long process.

“They were extremely thorough in the search process,” Anderson said.

Jamal Basit resigned as the Comets’ head coach in February after four seasons and Anderson was only recently officially hired to replace him.

Anderson wasted no time meeting with the team.

“I know already the interest is high,” Anderson said. “We had 35-40 kids at the meeting and that doesn’t include the upcoming ninth-graders.”

He’s in the midst of putting together the team’s summer schedule.

“It has to start now,” Anderson said.

Local bike ride to benefit aplastic anemia research The Jackson County Brevet will host its seventh annual charity bike ride June 4 in Braselton to benefit research for the treatment of aplastic anemia.

Registration is $55 through May 25, then $65 through June 4. The event begins at 7:30 a.m., with same-day registration from 6 to 7 a.m. if the event isn’t sold out in advance. Various rest stops with food and drink (every 18 miles on average) will be set up along the ride.

The ride, which also includes a complimentary post-race meal, raised $28,000 last year for the Kelly Wilhite Aplastic Anemia Research Fund at Emory University. In its first six years, the event has donated $273,000 to the cause.

LONDON — West Ham United have always done things their own way through thick and thin, so it was fitting when Frank Sinatra’s timeless classic kickstarted a post-match party that brought the curtain down on 112 years at the Boleyn Ground on Tuesday.

If concerted efforts were made by players to complete rounds more quickly, Rose felt that an improvement of only 10 minutes, at best, would be achieved over 18 holes.

“And really is that worth the whole hassle of what it would entail?” the Englishman said. “Do we need to monitor and do we need to keep on top of guys?

Absolutely, but I think the real solution is the traffic on the golf course.

“On the right kind of golf course, like Colonial, guys are whipping it around in three hours and 20 minutes, even less than that, and that’s with guys grinding (taking time) on three or four-foot putts.”

American Brandt Snedeker, a fast-talking winner of eight PGA Tour titles who is known for his speedy play on the course, has long felt that rounds taking five hours or more was “unacceptable” at the professional level.

“Granted there are a lot of tough golf courses and we’ve got big fields and we need to get around,” Snedeker said. “I understand that, and the Tour staff does a great job of trying to make the golf course play as fast as possible. But the way our policy is set up, there is no real penalty for playing slow. You might get fined a little bit of money, but guys put aside that money at the beginning of the year knowing it’s going to happen and they go ahead and do it.

“That’s a flawed policy if guys are okay with that.

We need to have a policy

where if you break a rule there is a penalty attached to it. Our policy should be a stroke penalty. If you have two bad times in a round, then you get the shot penalty.”

The last time a player was handed a one-stroke penalty during a regular PGA Tour event was 21 years ago at the Honda Classic where Glen Day was docked for taking too much time.

Like Snedeker, Rose believes the re-introduction of a one-shot policy would have the greatest effect in speeding up play.

“I’m not sure that an end-of-season fine is the fairest rule but, at the same time, you would be very unlucky to be timed 10 times by being in bad groups if you’re not the slow player,” Rose said.

“I think docking shots is the way that guys will get the most afraid.”

A big reason for that is the diminutive Nunez, who was ultra clutch for someone just finishing the ninth grade.

After Alec Cargin and Monty Horn singled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Harrison (24-8) brought in closer Harrison Corley to face Nunez.

The right-handed hitter was quickly in the hole, taking two called strikes.

“He started me with curveballs back to back, so I was expected another one,” Nunez. “But he threw me a high fastball and I just took it to the opposite field.”

The ball dropped in front of right fielder Aidan Loucks, whose throw to the plate was too late to keep Collins Hill — the designated home team for the second game — from a walk-off victory.

“We didn’t want the season to end like that [in a sweep],” Nunez said. “The seniors deserve to go out on a good way. Why not come back and take this up again.”

First baseman Cole Zabowski, who is headed to Ole Miss, scored twice and drove in a run in the second game after hitting a two-run homer in the opener.

The victory also prolonged the high school career of Riley King, who bounced back from a rough outing on the mound in the first game to have two hits and two RBIs in the nightcap.

Harrison tied the game in the sixth with two runs, the first on a double by Nathan Fancher.

But the Hoyas couldn’t take advantage of an error in the top of the seventh and Collins Hill ended it in the bottom of the inning.

Harrison shut out Brookwood twice in the second round and Collins Hill allowed only three runs in sweeping East Coweta.

The pitching was as effective in this series, though.

King took a no-hitter into the seventh inning at East Coweta, but the right-hander was pulled after two innings against Harrison.

After using a leadoff double by Justin Fields for a first-inning run, the Hoyas scored four times in the second on six singles.

Reliever Josh Drexler gave up a two-run double to Fancher in the third inning and it was quickly 7-0.

Drew Ishoy, the third Collins Hill pitcher, held Harrison to one run the rest of the way, but the damage was done.

William Holland and Caleb Watson had two-out doubles in the fifth inning off Hoyas starter Ryan Parker to get the Eagles on the scoreboard.

Zabowski’s long two-run homer in the seventh over the center-field fence came with two outs off Corley.

Fancher was 2-for-2 with a walk and three RBIs for Harrison, which also got two hits each from Fields and James Williams.

Parker allowed seven hits over six innings, but he walked just one and the Eagles left seven runners on base.

Harrison defeated Collins Hill in a three-game series en route to the 2010 state championship. Now the teams will need a deciding game again six year later.

“It’s a shame what happened, what transpired with the referee,” George said. “In all my playing career, all my coaching career, I’ve never seen a coach influence a referee to change his mind from a yellow to a red. … The coach got the referee to change his mind from excessive celebration, from a yellow card, to taunting, which is a red. When their player did literally the exact same thing but I just didn’t say anything to the ref. I don’t like to say things, but my guys deserved more.

“After how hard they’ve worked this year, they deserved more than that, having to play a man down after you’ve just gained the momentum to score a goal and then be given a red card and have your coach ejected. It’s just not right.

“I hate that a referee made an impact on a game such as that. I fully believe if we’re 11 v 11, we go out and win the game in

Brookwood dominated the first half for a 1-0 lead at the break and later scored a second against a stout Milton defense that entered the match having allowed only seven goals in their 19 matches and no goals at all in nearly a month.

The Broncos (15-4), whose only previous loss to a Georgia team was Feb. 13 to Johns Creek, put pressure on Milton from the start.

Less than four minutes in, a Milton defender headed it back to Ethan Suda and Samaan Williams got to the ball a split second ahead of the Milton goalie, but his shot went just over the goal.

Bartosz, Waters, Adams, O’Brien and Sisk each had two hits on the day to lead the Etowah offense.

Meanwhile, O’Brien (6 2/3 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 7 K) and Gipson-Long (6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 4 K) gave the Eagles quality starts on the mound.

NORCROSS — Midway through the second quarter of Tuesday night’s Class A-AAAAA boys lacrosse state semifinal, Greater Atlanta Christian looked to be in full control with a two-goal lead.

Then Allatoona was able to force a Spartan player out of bounds with possession of the ball and that ignited six straight goals for the Buccaneers, who never looked back in a 12-6 win on the road to reach the state finals.

Allatoona will face the winner of Blessed Trinity and Westminster in the finals.

“Early we had a lot of energy and we were taking advantage of situations,” GAC head coach Tim Ball said. “We got some early goals and had a lot of energy, but at some point there was that time at the end of the second quarter that we gave them (four) goals right at the end of half and I really believe that changed the momentum. I don’t care what anybody says, but lacrosse is a game of momentum. So that was huge. Those (four) goals at the end were a big difference. Then at the end we’re trying to get the ball away, and they get three easy goals. I really think that’s the difference, but I tell you bar-none that was the best team we’ve played this year.”

The Spartans (16-4) held a 4-2 advantage late in the second quarter, but Allatoona was able to score the final four goals of the half and take a 6-4 lead. In the second half, the Buccaneers scored two more, before Ford Higgins put the Spartans back on the board with 6:47 remaining in the third to make it an 8-5 game.

With 12 seconds left in the third, Allatoona netted another goal and looked to have perhaps stuck its final dagger, but the Spartans weren’t finished. A quick faceoff win by Nick Jones and a perfectly executed fast break pass to Brooks

To start the fourth quarter, GAC killed a man-up situation for Allatoona and regained control of the ball with just over six minutes left in the game. The Spartans offense peppered Allatoona goalie Jay Molander with shots until the 3:51 mark, but was never able to find the back of the net.

Allatoona scored with 3:35 left on the clock and added two more goals in the next minute as it cruised to a 12-5 victory.

“I think that out-ofbounds play when we pushed them out was the turning point,” Allatoona head coach Jonathan Wishon said. “We just needed a goal and that changed everything. This group, we’ve been down by three several times this year and we’ve come back. So there’s nothing we can do as coaches it’s just all heart from these guys. They’re really resilient and we’ve got a great group of seniors leading the way.”

The Buccaneers offense was led by three goals and five assists from Carson Sorrells. Ben Galloway also scored three goals, with Danny Tesler and Trevor Stuart each scoring two and Austin Zumbado and Mike Johnson each adding one. Molander finished with 13 saves.

Higgins led the GAC offense with three goals.

Buce, Lloyd Delatour and Bo Powell each scored one goal and goalie Brad Hodoval made 16 saves.

Ball said after the game he knew his team was hurting but he wanted to make sure they remembered the victories the Spartans set in their first run to the Final Four in school history.

“We’ll just love on them,” he said. “Right now they’re hurting — especially the seniors — but they’re going to step away and they’re going to have memories that are going to last the rest of their life and they can look back on the season. We broke almost every offensive record this year that we could break. We’re going to celebrate that.”

Buford sweeps into semis Grizzlies roll past Clarke for A.I.I. baseball title

BUFORD — When a team has great pitching, great hitting and great defense, usually that translates to a series win and that was a perfect description of the Buford Wolves’ sweep of the Cartersville Hurricanes in their elite eight matchup.

Buford beat Cartersville 6-5 in Game 1 and 10-3 in Game 2 for its third consecutive trip to the final four.

“I thought our outfield really made some plays today and that is something that doesn’t show up in any box score and I’m really proud of the way everybody played,” Buford head coach Tony Wolfe said. “I thought our pitchers battled.There’s not much that we didn’t do well today.”

Griffin Jolliff finished off his two games at the plate with seven RBIs including a three-run home run and a solo home run.

Jolliff now has 16 RBIs and four home runs in his last four games for the Wolves.

“For the last two weeks he (Jolliff) has been swinging it great,” Wolfe said.

“He’s had a really good year, but these last two weeks he has been on fire and when you hit in the middle of the order with the guys that he has in front of him and you have a lot of chances to drive

Joliff took the mound in Game 2 and pitched a complete game after allowing just three runs and striking out eight.

“This win feels a lot better than the Bainbridge win,” Joliff said. “Every time we play Cartersville everyone is just going as hard as they can no matter what. I wouldn’t be who I am without the guys around me. We’re a team through everything.”

Buford led Cartersville 4-1 after three innings, but the Hurricanes fought back with two runs in the fifth and seventh to cut the Wolves’ lead to 6-5. Cartersville and the potential game-tying runner on third base with one out but two

consecutive strikeouts from Austin Wilhite finished off the game 6-5.

Buford jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on a Joliff three-run home run and led 4-1 after two. Cartersville battled back with two more runs in the third inning to cut the Wolves’ lead to 4-3, but the Wolves pulled away from there.

Buford scored five runs in the top half of the fourth on a a 3 RBI triple off of the bat of Wilhite, an RBI double by Nick Wilhite and a single to right from Justin Glover.

Joliff cracked his second home run of the game in the sixth inning to finish off the scoring for the Wolves in Game 2.

LAWRENCEVILLE — The No. 1 Georgia Gwinnett baseball team captured its second Association of Independent Institutions title in three years on Tuesday afternoon, dominating the championship game with a 14-1 victory over Clarke (Iowa).

“We had a great tournament, and I’m very happy for the guys on winning their second title in three years,” GGC head coach Brad Stromdahl said.

“Each time out, we are getting better and today was another example of that growth. Across the board, our team played a complete game with great pitching, sound defense, and offensive execution at the plate. I believe this week prepared us for the great competition that we will face in the NAIA Opening Round next week.”

GGC’s starter Adam Clark (6-1) had a dominant performance on the mound for the Grizzlies as the right-handed hurler pitched seven innings, only surrendering one run on two hits while striking out six batters. Relievers Jeremy Hutchison and Michael Royal pitched an inning a piece of shutout work to hold the Crusad-

ers’ offense scoreless down the stretch.

In total, the Grizzly offense scored 14 runs on 18 hits in the championship game. The 2016 A.I.I. Georgia Gwinnett (554) wasted no time in the opening inning of play, scoring four runs for the 4-0 lead.

Errors doomed Clarke (37-15) in the championship game as the Crusaders committed a tournament high of five during the nine-inning contest.

The Crusaders’ lone run of the contest came in the bottom of the first on an RBI-double by third baseman Stephan Zanoni.

In the top of the second, GGC pushed its lead to five, 6-1, with a sacrifice

fly by Woods and an RBItriple by first baseman Zac Rinehart. Rinehart went 3-for-5 on the day, driving in two runs while scoring twice. Georgia Gwinnett’s seventh run of the game came in the third inning where a Clarke throwing error allowed Hamilton to score from second for the 7-1 GGC advantage.

Woods drove in his second run of the game with an RBI-single in the fifth before an error-plagued sixth inning by Clarke added five insurance runs for GGC to increase the lead to 13-1.

The final Grizzly run of the game came on a sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Jabari Gayle to push Georgia Gwinnett’s tally to 14 runs.

Clarke’s Mike Poteet received the loss, going three and one-third innings, surrendering seven runs, four unearned, on eight hits.

The Grizzlies had three other players recognized for their performance during the tournament as Hamilton, Trevor Bradley, and Marcus McCorkle received All-Tournament Team selections.

St. Pius ends Buford’s run

BUFORD — The Buford Wolves were one game away from playing in their first-ever state championship game, but what stood in their way were the three-time defending state champ St. Pius X Golden Lions.

Not only have the Golden Lions won three straight state titles, but they also were responsible for knocking the Wolves out of the playoffs a season ago in the quarterfinals.

Unfortunately for Buford, the Wolves’ season and 17-game win streak came to an end at the hands of the Golden Lions for the second straight year, 3-1 in overtime.

The Wolves took an early 1-0 lead at the 9-minute mark off of a corner kick from Ambria Shutts to a crossing Elexa Bahr but a second-half goal and two overtime goals by the Golden Lions ended things for the Wolves.

The Wolves had opportunities to take a 2-0 lead multiple times in the first half and had a chance to regain the lead in the second half but some unfortunate bounces did not go Buford’s way.

“It’s hard to put this into words because we didn’t deserve that result,” head coach Drew Eager said.

The Wolves’ inability to give themselves some breathing room finally caught up to them just five minutes into the second half. The Golden Lions’ Ellie Glen got the equalizer on a cross right in front of the goal to tie the game up at 1-1.

Lassiter shuts out Collins Hill girls 2-0

It didn’t take long for Lassiter to take control of the game as Brennan took a corner kick and scored from close range with 35:50 remaining in the first half to give the Lady Trojans a 1-0 lead.

Collins Hill (15-6) came close to tying the score at 1-all with 27:05 left in the first half, but Lassiter goalkeeper Megan Richardson made a diving save of Ciara Whitely’s attempt.

Lassiter stayed on the offensive through the rest of the first half and had a couple of scoring chances

“We were happy to get that first goal in the first few minutes,” Galvin said. “We had a couple of chances immediately after that, but, unfortunately, the goalkeeper put those away. But I was pretty happy that we were getting those chances.”
