For the past four years, Brian O’Neal has stretched his legs on Ronald Reagan Parkway and run a half-marathon as part of the annual Run the Reagan race, but he decided it was time for a change this year. O’Neal traded in the halfmarathon for the 10K at the race on Saturday. At 46, the Grayson resident decided he couldn’t continue doing the longer course anymore, and he felt the 10K would be kinder to his body. He admitted the 10K was still a little hard on his body, but the pain appeared to have been worth it. He cruised to an overall first-place victory

change for the Run the Reagan itself. During its first 21 years, the event was a fundraiser for the Gwinnett Community Clinic, which closed last fall. So the event had to be re-invented a little bit for this year and the future — although it still included a half-marathon, 10K, 5K and a one-mile fun run. LAWRENCEVILLE — Amy Ruiz cried. She cried almost non-stop for about an hour testifying under questioning by her attorney. After a break, as a prosecutor pressed her on what happened to her daughter, 2-year-old Prisi Vasquez, Ruiz cried more. She cried so hard she ended up doubled over in the chair, prompting the judge to call for a recess. Amy Ruiz “She was just in my arms for less than a minute. It’s very painful. I can never forget. She passed away in my arms,” the mother said at one point before her sobs were so pronounced no one could understand. The state was skeptical of the display, as it has been with Ruiz’s story. After the break, the prosecutor, Charissa Henrich, kept pressing the murder suspect on why she changed multiple points of her account since 2008, when Gwinnett County police found the child’s body in the attic of Ruiz’s former home near Lawrenceville. Ruiz, 28, slender and soft-spoken on the stand, said she hadn’t called 911 back on Feb. 3, 2007, after returning home to find the child in medical distress. The mother was firm that she wanted to call and get help for the girl. She said her then-husband, Christian Vasquez, took her cellphone and threatened to kill her, her 3-year-old son and her young niece if she called 911. In other accounts, Ruiz didn’t mention that. Speaking to a detective, she said she hadn’t called 911 because her husband told her it would cause trouble for her father. Ruiz’s father had given Prisi and the 3-year-old boy back to Ruiz and Vasquez in spite of an order granting the grandfather custody. Vasquez, who awaits trial on murder charges, is accused of hitting the child in the head. Ruiz reportedly wasn’t home at the time of the injury but has been charged with felony murder as a result of her not calling for help. Ruiz also didn’t tell her father or the detective that Vasquez physically abused

Cancer changes a person. No one knows that better than Bobbie Menneg. Since overcoming her battle with breast cancer five years ago, she has made it her mission to help as many people going through their own journey as she can. “Five years ago, you could never have convinced me that God
has a plan for you, but I know he has a plan for me now,” Menneg said. The 55-year-old Lawrenceville woman was recently named the American Cancer Society’s Volunteer of the Year for Gwinnett. “Bobbie is truly an exemplary and compassionate leader. Her volunteer service is priceless,”
