Terror suspect seeks release to local family

A man accused of attempting to fund terrorism through al-Qaida is asking to be released on bond to the supervision of family in Gwinnett

County, including a local assistant district attorney.

Asif Ahmed Salim, 35, is one of four men indicted last year in U.S. District Court in Toledo, Ohio on charges of conspiring to give money to Anwar Al-Awlaki to support “violent jihad” against U.S.

military in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to the FBI. The indictment alleges they plotted from 2005 to 2012 to aide Al-Awlaki, an American who was said to be a “key leader” in al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula before his death in a drone strike.

Among the family who have agreed to oversee him is Sabrina Nazim, a senior assistant district attorney under Gwinnett’s top prosecutor, Danny Porter. Nazim, who is Salim’s sister-in-law, intends to testify at the bond hearing on May 4, the suspect’s mo-

tion said.

Porter said Tuesday he has known Nazim since she was in high school, trusts her totally and he hopes the public doesn’t see her as guilty “by association.”

Gwinnett County’s main water resource has been named the most endangered waterway in America in a new report from a national water conservation group.

American Rivers announced late Monday night that the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin topped its 2016 America’s Most Endangered Rivers list. The annual list names 10 rivers across the country that are being threatened by water use and development.

Adair House. The two buildings are located together at 455 S. Perry St., near downtown Lawrenceville.

Among the work will be improvements designed to ensure continued compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act. “The project includes significant ADA accessibility improvements, along with the restroom and storage building, improved parking, including bus parking, sidewalks and pavement, signage and landscaping,” Assistant County Administrator Phil Hoskins told commissioners.

The work is set to be paid for by using money from the 2009 SPLOST fund, with the goal of making the facilities easier to use for school field trips, community meetings and general events. Staff from the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center conduct education programs at the site.

The importance of the structures is expected to be highlighted in a few years when officials celebrate Gwinnett’s bicentennial, especially since one of those buildings has existed since almost the beginning of the county.

nett County’s bicentennial in 2018, these improvements will allow more people to enjoy these historic buildings and to learn about how our community’s rich history helped shape today’s Gwinnett,” Commission Chairwoman Charlotte Nash said in a statement.

The Adair house was built in the 1820s and is one of the oldest homes in the county.

It was originally located near the current site of the Pike Street and Hurricane Shoals Road intersection, but has been moved a couple of times since then.

At one point it was located on Chandler Road, but county officials moved it to the seminary’s site in 2008 to make room for the Sugarloaf Parkway extension.

The seminary is a little newer, but not by much.

Its building dates back to the 1850s, when it was built as a replacement for a previous structure that was destroyed in a fire. The previous building, which began as a girl’s school, was erected in 1838.

New superintendent brings fresh eyes to TPC Sugarloaf

DULUTH — Before he arrived at TPC Sugarloaf, Tom Vlach described the course as “big and bold,” on a large piece of property, it requires significant shot-making ability.

Now Vlach is in charge of maintaining it. After a corporate transfer from TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. about six months ago, Tom Vlach Vlach took over as superintendent for Mike Crawford, who had been in the position since 1997. It’s the second time in Vlach’s career he’s replaced someone who’d been in the job for about two decades.

Vlach called it a fantastic opportunity to leave Sawgrass after eight years to be closer to family.

“It’s refreshing because we’re not all created with the same thought process,” Vlach said. “What may have been a priority for Mike, may not necessarily be a priority for me.

On Tuesday afternoon, police announced the apprehension of Boaz Anthony Fordyce, 37, who was identified as the man shown on security camera photos Monday.

Capt. Thom Bardugon, Lilburn police spokesman, said the shooting happened around 9:10 p.m. The suspect was seen trying to leave the store with three televisions that he didn’t pay for when Ferguson and another employee tried to stop him.

“A struggle ensued and the

suspect produced a pistol and fired at least one round that struck Mr. Ferguson,” Bardugon said.

The police department dispatched a chaplain to comfort distraught employees.

The photos of the suspect went out, leading to multiple tips from the public and warrants for the suspect at about 1 a.m. Tuesday, according to a news release. The man was arrested in the Doraville area Tuesday afternoon without incident at a business.

“Lilburn Police Chief Bruce Hedley wants to thank the hundreds of citizens who responded to the media’s coverage of this story,” the news release said.

“Without this coverage and the tremendous number of tips that were provided to the investigators, this case would have been much more difficult to solve.”

As the suspect sits in the county jail without bond, family and friends of Ferguson grieve.

The group said the area around the upper Chattahoochee drains one of the smallest watersheds in the country that provides water to a major metropolitan city.

The basin begins in metro Atlanta as two rivers: the Chattahoochee, which

begins at Lake Lanier, and the Flint, which begins just south of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Clayton County.

They eventually merge to become the Apalachicola River near the Florida border.

Access to water in the basin has been at the center of a nearly 30-year battle between Georgia and its neighbors, going all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The basin is not just used for drinking water supplies, though. It also provides water for agriculture, recreation, fisheries, industry and power generation.

Chattahoochee Riverkeeper Jason Ulseth said that although Lake Lanier has been hovering around full pool in recent months because of abundant rainfall, the drought that drained the lake nearly a decade ago is a reminder of why conservation is key.

endangered rivers list should be seen as a call to action to conserve water and be prepared for future droughts, Ulseth added.

“Recently, we’ve had a lot of rain that currently has the lake near full pool, but that next drought will happen eventually and we need to be prepared for it,” he said.

The health of Lake Lanier is important to Gwinnett County residents because that is where their water comes from, which is why local officials try to clean used water and return as much as possible to the lake. However, Gwinnett is not the only county that pulls water directly from the lake and other communities downstream pull water from the Chattahoochee.

Ulseth said another issue is that water used by Gwinnett residents who are on septic systems, particularly in the eastern part of the county, may end up back in neighboring water basins rather than going to Lanier. That is why, he said, water watchers would prefer to see residents on the county’s sewer system.

“Then it would be treated and go back into the water body from which it was pulled,” Ulseth explained.

The group pointed the finger of blame at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ management of the basin as a primary trouble source

for the situation in the basin. But it also blames officials in Georgia for not balancing “downstream needs with Georgia’s water demands.”

“The region’s recent rains won’t solve the problem of chronic mismanagement and excessive water use,” Emanuel said.

This isn’t the first time at least one of the rivers in the basin has earned a high spot on the endangered rivers list. The Flint River, by itself, earned the No. 2 spot on the 2009 and 2013 lists. The Chattahoochee earned a solo spot on the 2012 list with a No. 3 ranking.

American Rivers said the rivers in the basin are being used so much that drought flows are common even when the area has an abundance of rain, forcing some tributaries to run dry at times, and called the water flow into Apalachicola Bay in Florida “little more than life support.”

Ulseth said progress is being made throughout metro Atlanta to improve water conservation. However, he said that every community that uses the river needs to be aggressive when it comes to water conservation to make sure the water resources don’t dry up.

“A lot of progress has been achieved already, but we can still achieve a lot more,” he said.

Better to abstain after diagnosis DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer. I have been reading articles saying that drinking moderately is not a good idea. I have always been a very moderate drinker, averaging five drinks per week. Does my diagnosis of breast cancer mean I must give it up altogether?

None of my doctors has told me to stop drinking, so that makes me wonder about the bottom line of these articles. What is your opinion?

— J. ANSWER: There is consistent evidence that consumption of even moderate amounts of alcohol increases risk of breast cancer. However, the absolute risk is modest, about 1.5 percent increase in risk between moderate drinkers and nondrinkers. Among women with diagnosed breast cancer, one recent study suggested that drinking more than three or four alcoholic drinks weekly may increase the risk of recurrence, particularly in older or heavier women. Again, the magnitude of the difference was not large, with about 2 percent increased risk of recurrence in moderate drinkers, compared with women who do not drink.

The lowest risk of breast cancer and breast cancer recurrence is among nondrinkers. It’s your choice, but if you do decide to drink, I would recommend having no more than three drinks per week.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I frequently get laser light in my eyes when checking out books in the public library.

The checkout person will sometimes hold the laser checkout light in such a manner that when he or she scans the bar code, it hits my eyes as well, or the check-out person, having scanned the item, does not place it back into a specifically designed holder. Do I need to worry about damage to my eyes?

— P.L. ANSWER: Damage to the retina comes from highpowered lasers, especially green lasers. Some green laser pointers sold in the United States have a power of well over 5 milliwatts and may cause damage if pointed at the eye for even a short while.

The lasers used in grocery stores and libraries have far less power, normally less than 0.1 milliwatts, and are the much safer red color. As far as I can find, no damage to the retina has been reported from a red laser below 3 milliwatts, let alone these very low-power lasers.

Still, you should never point a laser at someone’s face, and I would ask to speak with the head librarian about laser safety.

Mom wants to put dad in driver’s seat DEAR AMY: My husband of 15 years is a high-functioning alcoholic.

I knew this going into our relationship 18 years ago but now I have some new resentments popping up.

Now that our daughters are busy teens with active lives and part-time jobs, I find myself constantly driving them around town.

This is fine. It’s part of being a mom. However, my husband never participates in this because he “has been drinking and it wouldn’t be safe.”

I totally agree with this and don’t want him driving our kids even a little under the influence. Despite everything else I’ve been through, I find I resent this the most.

When I put up with this (not silently, mind you) — am I being an enabler?

— Curious Mom DEAR CURIOUS: Yes, you are enabling your husband to stay drunk during times when he might otherwise have to stay sober.

Mind you, whenever you take care of your children — you are simply seeing to their needs and you should feel good about that. This is what parenting is all about. But what would your family do if you weren’t there? What would your husband do if you decided to get an evening job and weren’t available, or if you decided to get drunk yourself one evening?

Amy Dickinson this whole situation and one way to stop enabling is to try to spread out the discomfort and share it with others who are impacted by your husband’s drinking.

Let’s say you decide to tell your family, “I will very happily drive on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Dad is responsible for the other days.”

Your husband either has to stay sober, or he will have to go through the process of finding someone other than you to drive the kids. If the children are put out or made uncomfortable by this restriction, they can tell their father how they feel and he can explain to them why he isn’t available when they need him.

I certainly hope you and your children avail yourselves of Al-anon and Alateen meetings. Alateen has helped many young people try to make sense of a parent’s drinking.

Check al-anon.org for the location of meetings near you. Perhaps your husband could drive his children to a meeting.

DEAR AMY: Recently, an acquaintance contacted

me about a guy she was talking to on Tinder (the dating app). Tinder shows when you and a connection have mutual Facebook friends, so this acquaintance asked me for an honest opinion, as I knew the guy she had been matched with. He and I went to college together.

He and I hadn’t talked in a few years, so I checked Facebook to make sure it was the same person (it was). However, then I saw that he is engaged and is due to be married within the year.

I told my acquaintance to dodge the bullet, but now I’m not sure where my responsibility ends: Do I confront the guy? Stay out of it?

His fiancee seems really happy to be engaged and is posting all sorts of wedding countdowns and photos of them together, so I’m feeling conflicted about potentially ruining her happiness. But in this case, I’m not sure ignorance would lead to marital bliss.

— Conflicted Connection DEAR CONFLICTED: Given that you aren’t ongoing personal friends with this person but have basically stumbled onto this via social media, you are not obliged to protect his fiancee. These two might have some sort of mutual agreement to hang on Tinder during the engagement phase of their relationship (unlikely, but possible).

stand your desire to try to share your knowledge in order to perhaps inspire him to make different choices. You could message him on Facebook and say, “Hey, what a coincidence! My friend got matched with you on Tinder! Hope you are well.

I’m enjoying the photos of you and your fiancee, which she is sharing on FB. She seems really happy and excited about your wedding.”

DEAR AMY: I’m responding to “Sisyphus,” the millennial who had to redo their work because of an older co-worker’s technological error.

Sisyphus should just move on and not say anything.

Think of that co-worker as job security.

World Controller in train crash admits to playing on phone BERLIN — A signal controller at the center of an investigation into a German train crash that killed 11 people admitted on Tuesday to playing a game on his mobile phone while in charge on the day, the public prosecutor’s office said.

The man was detained on Tuesday after developments in the investigation into the head-on train collision in Bavaria in February, which was Germany’s biggest train crash since 1998. He faces possible charges of causing death through negligence.

The public prosecutor’s office in Traunstein, near the border with Austria, said investigations had found the man “turned on his mobile phone during his shift on the morning of the accident, started an online computer game and played actively … until just before the collision of the trains.”

Belgium charges two, detains three over ISIS attacks BRUSSELS — Belgium has charged two more men with terrorist offences linked to last month’s bombings in Brussels and also searched a house related to the attacks in Paris, detaining three people, federal prosecutors said on Tuesday.

A judge charged the two men, identified as Smail F., born in 1984, and Ibrahim F., born in 1988, over alleged links to the rental of a property that investigators believe was used as a “safe house” before the March 22 suicide bombings in Brussels.

Prosecutors said in a statement that they had searched a house in the southern Brussels district of Uccle, taking into custody three people for questioning over the Nov. 13 shooting and bombing rampage in Paris.

Prosecutors did not comment on what was found in the house search but said the three people detained would appear before a judge on Wednesday to decide whether they would be charged.

Short sleep may be tied to cold or infection risk

U.S. adults who sleep no more than five hours per night or who have a diagnosed sleep disorder are more likely to have suffered a recent cold than those who sleep more, according to a new study.

“In many countries, particularly western countries, sleep takes a back seat to productivity, which may make some sense in

The researchers used responses from more than 22,000 adults in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys between 2005 and 2012. The participants reported their typical weekday hours of sleep, history of diagnosed sleep disorders and whether they had ever told a doctor about having trouble sleeping.

They also answered questions about having a head or chest cold, the flu, pneumonia or an

ear infection over the previous 30 days.

Almost 14 percent of people said they slept no more than five hours per night, 23 percent slept for six hours, 56 percent slept for seven to eight hours, and 7 percent said they slept for nine or more hours per night.

One quarter had told a doctor about trouble sleeping and 7 percent had been diagnosed with a sleep disorder.

Where are they now?

LONDON — It’s called Frontex and, according to its website, the agency “promotes, coordinates and develops European border management in line with the (European Union) fundamental rights charter applying the concept of Integrated Border Management.”

Except that it isn’t.

As reported by the UK Daily Mail, “Mass immigration is allowing terrorists to sneak into the EU.” In a devastating report, the agency hired by the EU to keep member countries safe from jihadists has admitted what should have been obvious to anyone paying attention and taking seriously their Cal threats.

Thomas While the agency says 1.82 million people made illegal border crossings last year — a six-fold increase over 2014 — that’s only the number they were able to count. Frontex said it has no idea how many actual illegal crossings there have been. Furthermore it has been unable to trace their movements since they arrived and has no way of tracking them.

The Mail says officials warned that a “staggering number of European citizens had become jihadists and were taking advantage of lax border controls.”

Since ISIS announced its intention to use the migrant flow to smuggle terrorists into Europe, why is it a surprise that they have kept their word?

What is encouraging this invasion is the reluctance of Western governments to adopt policies that might label them “Islamophobes.” In far too many cases those concerns are outweighing their primary responsibility to protect citizens and borders. One example, which may not relate directly to the terrorist threat but exposes the stupidity that increases the likelihood of more attacks, comes, again, from the Daily Mail, which reports, “EU judges ruled that foreign crime suspects cannot be deported automatically if they risk being imprisoned in degrading jail conditions abroad.”

Does that mean judges are OK with suspects committing crimes in the EU while waiting for prison upgrades in their countries of origin?

Not that more information is needed about ISIS, al-Qaida and organizations like the Council on American-Islamic Relations and the Muslim Brotherhood, which some believe are little more than Islamic front groups, but in the event you might suffer from information deprivation, consider a sobering speech given at Hillsdale College in February by Andrew C. McCarthy, a former U.S. attorney who led the terrorism prosecution against Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman and 11 others in connection with the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

After some initial reluctance to take Rahman’s announced intentions seriously, McCarthy concluded he “was not lying about Islam,” adding, “When he said the scriptures command that Muslims strike terror into the hearts of Islam’s enemies, the scriptures backed him up.”

To those who continue to promote the false notion that Islam is a “religion of peace,” McCarthy responds: “This is how we fall into the trap of allowing the Muslim Brotherhood, the world’s most influential Islamic supremacist organization, to infiltrate policy-making organs of the U.S. government, not to mention our schools, our prisons and other institutions.”

Western liberals like to make fun of people they claim are “climate deniers” when it comes to “global warming.” They are guilty of denying the intentions of Islamists. As McCarthy warned his Hillsdale audience, “stubbornly unwilling to deal with the reality of Islam, our leaders have constructed an Islam of their very own.”

This is why the infiltration is so effective in Europe and increasingly in the U.S. It is why, as The Daily Caller reports, “The United States issues twice as many green cards to migrants from Muslim-majority countries than from Europe, adding to a Middle Eastern migrant population in the country that is one of the fastest growing demographics.”

There is even an Islamic University of Minnesota, run by a man who, according to the Investigative Project on Terrorism, “used a recent sermon to invoke a Hadith commonly espoused by Muslim terrorists to kill Jews for causing ‘corruption in the land.’”

Still, we let them in and in too many cases lose track of where they are and what they are doing to our detriment.

Common cause between pope, Sanders Imagine emerging from a rocky political week only to announce, as Bernie Sanders did, that, oh, by the way, the Vatican called. Actually, it was the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, but close enough, I suppose.

Hillary Clinton thought bubble: He’s Jewish for crying out loud. What am I, chopped liver? No, I’m Methodist! But if I can become a New Yorker, I can become a Catholic!

Some people have all the kismet. Or, maybe sometimes people just happen to agree that communism isn’t really so bad. OK, I’m exaggerating, but only a smidgeon.

It should surprise no one that the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences — or especially Pope Francis — might find common cause with Sanders’ worldview. Both the pope and the Bern speak of helping the disenfranchised and the poor. But Sanders is a democratic socialist who wants to be president of the United States. And the pope is, well, the pope. A pastoral leader who washes the feet of the homeless and eschews the elaborate trappings of the corner office, he’s the real deal, as in living as Christ did, spiritually if not physically.

Also like Christ, he’s a radical. Just ask Sanders.

individualism” that Francis condemns is precisely what has driven American ingenuity, entrepreneurship, and a level of prosperity unmatched in human history.

That more people are doing less well — and the middle class has suffered — means there’s work to do, but it doesn’t necessarily require radical restructuring. The striving for greater equality is always a proper operating principle, but what Sanders is aiming for without saying so is equal outcomes. The imposition of equality by third parties never works very well and inevitably carries the unwelcome penalty of less freedom.

Greater effort toward raising the bottom rather than tearing down the top would seem a better approach than extreme measures that likely would have a destabilizing effect.

A pope needn’t worry about such things and is free to ponder the universe through the pulpit’s lens. He is also free to chat with politicians who share his worldview, though it isn’t clear whether he and Sanders will convene. Still, a visit to the Vatican a couple of days ahead of the New York primary surely can’t hurt.

If Sanders wins, one might even say it was divine intervention.

Nutritional labeling not enough education on health The journal Health Affairs and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation recently published a policy brief about the latest federal Dietary Guidelines for Americans, introduced with this succinct observation: “Nutrition is a relatively young science and dispensing good nutritional advice to an entire population is not easy.”

Understatement of the year.

The new guidelines can practically be used as a measuring stick for how far from “optimal” eating most people’s day-to-day intake can be.

One major piece of advice is to “limit calories from added sugars and saturated fats and reduce sodium intake.”

Talk about a pie-in-the-sky recommendation.

Limiting requires a baseline knowledge about such substances. But though nutrition-facts labeling has been around for over 25 years, people still don’t really know how to read it or use it in meaningful ways that can make an impact on their health.

Because of this, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is currently trying to revise the labels so they’ll be easier for consumers to read and more difficult for food marketers to trick people into believing they are eating less than they think.

The battle to improve food culture has made great strides in terms of getting consumers to want more locally sourced produce, fresher ingredients in their prepared and takeout foods, and even better treatment of the livestock that make up our dairy and meat products.

But the push for calorie restriction, serving-size control and curbing predatory junk food marketing is in its relative infancy.

It’s going to have to grow up quickly once enough people realize that increasing physical activity is a wonderful way to improve your physical well-being — but far from the most effective way to maintain a healthy weight or to provide the best nutrition for a disease-free body.

Only food holds that magical key to wellness. And until we find a way to give whole populations this basic understanding, the world will continue to have more people suffering from the diseases of obesity than from hunger.

Clarence was a graduate of Lawrenceville High School and grew up in the Sweetgum community. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was employed by the U.S. Post Office as a rural letter carrier in the Stone Mountain area for many years. He was a charter member of Lucerne Baptist Church in Lilburn, where he served as a respected deacon.

Most recently, he became a member of Mountain Park First Baptist Church in St. Mtn. The Funeral Service to Honor and Celebrate the Life of Clarence Pratt will be held on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 1:00 PM, Tom M. Wages Snellville Chapel.

God in His wisdom has chosen to allow Vicki to be reunited with Dane in Heaven, where they are both in the presence of their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, whom Vicki loved with all her heart.

SNELLVILLE — Mayor Tom Witts entered the council chambers to an ovation Monday night for his first meeting since news broke of an investigation targeting his finances.

The crowd, many of whom wore saved “Tom Witts for Mayor” Tshirts from the run-up to the November election, cheered and clapped eagerly.

The mayor stopped and turned for a moment to take it all in.

Only last week, the news dashed Witts’ hopes of keeping Snellville controversy-free since he beat longtime rival Mayor Kelly Kautz, who had locked in power struggles with the council. Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter has filed no charges but said he is trying to determine if Witts committed tax evasion or campaign fund misuse.

Now, in the council chambers, a broad smile crept across the mayor’s face. He waved softly.

“Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart,” he said. “Thank you.”

Soon, Witts was back at the business of being mayor. He welcomed a Girl Scout troop to lead the Pledge of Allegiance and gave a proclamation to a young man who works with an entrepreneurship program.

He guided the council through a mostly unremarkable agenda, which

did include approval of the terms of City Manager Butch Sanders’ employment agreement for the next three years. It was unanimous.

Last week, government ethics experts told the Daily Post they had questions about a deal Sanders and Witts had struck for Witts’ remodeling company to do work at City Hall. Sanders said Witts had resigned from the council and wasn’t yet mayor when the work was done late last year. Porter said he was looking into whether the payment of nearly $4,000 to the company was appropriate, because it went out after Witts was sworn in as mayor.

Many of those who crowded into the council chambers seemed wholly supportive of Snellville’s officials, just as the officials did of each other.

Council members Roger Marmol, Cristy Lenski and Bobby Howard offered words of support

for Witts and the council.

Dave Emanuel spoke of how lucky he was to work with the other officials.

Mayor Pro Tem Barbara Bender didn’t address the issue.

None were as direct as Howard. He told the residents that the mayor and council still needed their support to work to improve the city.

Then he turned to Witts and said, “Mayor, I stand here with you.”

The mayor thanked the supporters profusely, especially those who’d called or come by to see him since his home and the office of Georgia Property Restoration were searched by the DA’s office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The well-wishes helped him soldier on as mayor.

“Make no mistake,” Witts said, “I plan on remaining your mayor.”

Folks like Anne Herrington seem hopeful that promise holds. After the meeting, she told the

Daily Post she felt the investigation is a “rehash” of an old issue. Witts, indeed, has long been open that he had a payment plan for tens of thousands in taxes, debt which he said grew as he fought to keep his business open and workers employed.

The district attorney, though, has said it appears Witts doesn’t have a payment plan for state taxes.

Herrington, who handed out “I stand with Witts” stickers, said she wants to see the investigation run its course and the city move on from all the controversy of the last few years.

That was the rallying cry of sorts for Witts’ campaign before defeating Kautz, who had sued the city council and stayed in regular battle with the other officials.

It did seem for a while after the election that Snellville had found peace. Apart from an episode over the planning of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade, most of the news out of town was about new construction projects, work on the town green, police officers getting awards — nice things.

But again, sour attention falls on the proud town.

Why does Snellville’s controversy seem to have such trouble dying?

Herrington has an idea.

She developed it from experience long ago with a snake she encountered.

DULUTH — A lump sum raise is only a couple months away from the bank accounts of Gwinnett County Public Schools employees.

The Gwinnett County Board of Education on Tuesday night at Duluth High School tentatively adopted a $1.987 billion budget for fiscal 2017. Chief Financial Officer Joe Heffron also said that of the three percent raise coming to employees as part of this budget, one percent of it will come in June in a lump sum payout.

The remaining will come as a two percent cost of living raise during the 2016-17 school year. The salary scale for teachers is also moving up one year.

CEO/Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks said while things have improved since the lowest points of the Great Recession budget fallout of 2009, there is more room to go to recover from overall budget cuts.

“It’s a little bit easier this year than the last four or five years,” Wilbanks said before an area board meeting at the high school which included an address from Wilbanks to schools in the area about programs and initiatives across the district.

Heffron added, “Positive trends, sustaining trends, but still not where we were in 2009.”

The first public hearing about the budget will be at 7 p.m. on May 12 at the district office in Suwanee, and the second public hearing and adoption will be at 6

p.m. on May 19.

Heffron added this budget also includes growth for new students who will enroll in two new schools in August. Opening of those new schools — Baldwin Elementary and Coleman Middle — means the district plans to hire 159 more teachers.

First-year teacher salary is up slightly over last year to $41,849. The rate for substitute teachers will rise from $85 to $87, and for long-term subs from $95 to $97.

For the third straight year, the Gwinnett County tax digest is increasing, this time by five percent for an additional $23.3 million. However, heath care costs for noncertificated employees for the district have moved from $596 per employee, to $746 in January, and they’re projected to move to $846

by January. Benefit costs for non-certificated employees, typically cafeteria workers, bus drivers and central office personnel, costs $9 million annually for 6,200 employees.

Some of the challenges will come from a projected additional 1,791 students in August, which will bring the 2016-17 enrollment to 177,800. Cost per student in this budget is $8,466.

The district will receive an additional $30.8 million from the state because of a decrease in austerity reductions. But the state money will also drop by $29.8 million because of a decrease in equalization grant funding of $19 million and a $10.8 million increase in the local five-mill share. That means the district nets $1 million.

Duluth’s Hrastar earns sweet redemption with title

Ava Hrastar’s appearance at last year’s Easter Bowl, one of the nation’s most prestigious junior tennis tournaments, was as brief as it was disappointing.

The teen lost her opening singles match in three sets, then was eliminated in a three-set consolation match at the USTA national spring tournament. She also lost

her doubles opener, finishing the California tourney with an 0-3 record.

A year later, the frustration still resonates in Hrastar’s voice when she recalls the early exit.

“If you lose in the first round, you have a consolation match and I lost both.

It’s called getting rounded,” the longtime Duluth resident said. “I also lost doubles, which is worse. It’s called getting triple-crowned.”

“Her whole tournament

was literally over on the first or second day, so we had a nice vacation in Palm Springs,” her father, Scott Hrastar, said.

“All my friends were left in the tournament, and I was so mad and so embarrassed to tell my friends how I did,” Ava said.

Hrastar returned to Indian Wells, Calif., last week seeking redemption for 2015, and she got it.

Duluth defender Mitch McCurry is a man of few words.

The four-year starter prefers to let his actions speak for him.

More often than not, those actions are sweeping slide tackles that stifle an opponent’s offensive attack.

“Very quiet, very reserved, but on the field he plays with so much emotion and so much passion that he plays his position very well,” Duluth head coach

Adel Mohsen said. “Last year, he played right back no problem. I know on clubs he plays different positions.

Just a very likeable kid.

Very coachable. Will do anything you ask him to do and just does it to the best of his ability when he’s put there.”

McCurry had grown up watching Duluth games, so to be a part of the team that finally brought home the title was a neat moment for him. The Wildcats defense didn’t give up a single goal in the final four games of the state tournament.

“My freshman year was the first year we made the playoffs in like seven or eight years,” he said. “Then

going on to win the state championship last year was insane, because Duluth had never won a state championship in soccer. It was a full team effort. We had the offense, the defense and the midfield to win state. We’re trying to revamp and do that again this year.”

Duluth entered Tuesday’s game with Mountain View ranked No. 8 in the state at 8-3-1 on the year.

Two Georgia football early enrollees, Peachtree Ridge grad Chad Clay and McEachern’s Julian Rochester, were arrested early Tuesday on charges relating to possession of a BB gun and property damage.

The felony charges are for having a weapon in a school zone and seconddegree criminal damage to Chad property, Clay according to ESPN, which said the weapons charge has no bond, while the criminal damages to property has a $5,000 bond.

“I’m disappointed with the poor judgment of Julian and Chad,” first-year UGA head coach Kirby Smart said in a school release. “We expect full compliance with the policies of the university and of our football program from all our student-athletes. Information is still being gathered, but they will be disciplined in an appropriate manner.”

Both Clay and Rochester graduated high school early and participated in spring practice up until this point. Georgia’s GDay spring game is this Saturday.

Clay, a 6-foot, 180-pound cornerback, played two seasons at Walton in Cobb County before transferring to Peachtree Ridge. He is the son of former NFL and Georgia Tech cornerback Willie Clay.

Fellow freshman Rochester, a 6-5, 327-pounder, was one of the nation’s top defensive tackle recruits and was expected to play considerably this season.

Butler, along with Baseball Hall of Famers Tom Glavine and John Smoltz, will play in the Novelis Celebrity Challenge, a special event within the Champions Tour’s Mitsubishi Electric. Hrastar was the only Georgian to win the Easter Bowl singles title this year, and also is the first from her home state to claim that distinction since Atlanta’s Taylor Townsend won the girls 18s in 2012.

She is just the second Gwinnett native to win the Easter Bowl, joining Duluth’s Caroline Price (the 2009 girls 16s champion).

Giving Georgia a rare singles champion at the Easter Bowl was sweet, but so was avenging her 2015 performance.

“I’m satisfied because last year I lost all of the matches I played and I was so upset,” Hrastar said. “I was just excited because I’ve worked really hard over the past year. … I played a lot better this year and I played with more patience. Last year I was trying to win points too quickly and then I’d miss. I was a lot calmer.”

Hrastar won five of her six Easter Bowl singles matches in straight sets, including a 6-2, 6-1 finals win over Skyler Grishuk, an Aliso Viejo, Calif., resident and the daughter of two-time Russian Olympic ice dancing gold medalist Oksana Grishuk.

Her toughest match was a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Christine Inah Canete of

Butler played on Peachtree Ridge’s 2006 state championship team, and also was a high school golfer for the Lions.

He punted at Georgia before earning a spot in the NFL, first with the Pittsburgh Steelers and most recently with the Arizona Cardinals.

To cap it off, she went 5-0 in doubles and won the championship with her partner, Fiona Crowley of San Antonio.

“It’s just exciting because I know there’s so few (Easter Bowl winners from Georgia),” Hrastar said. “Southern California and Florida are dominant tennis states and it just shows that people from other states are not necessarily from California or Florida can do well in those tournaments, even if it’s not expected.”

Hrastar’s rise to tennis prominence included forays into other sports, including years of gymnastics and summer league swimming. She did well in gymnastics, but committed full time to tennis when she was 11 and began getting too tall for gymnastics

(she’s already 5-foot-8).

Tennis seemed to fit her skill set best anyway.

“We started when she was 3 or 4,” Scott Hrastar said. “I would roll the ball on the court and she would hit it like she was playing golf. Eventually it got in the air and eventually it got on the other side of the net. … I noticed, even at 3 years old, I would throw the Wiffle ball, and seriously, no matter how fast I pitched it, she would hit it.

I could tell she had great hand-eye coordination.”

Hrastar has trained in the Gwinnett area throughout her tennis career, currently working with Brian de Villiers and Grant Stafford, her coaches for the past three years, at Pro Tennis International in Duluth.

She five to six hours most days on training, a taxing schedule when she’s in town. If she’s not in town, she is likely somewhere around the country for a junior tennis tournament or an invitation-only USTA developmental camps in Florida.

“It’s busy. My schedule’s very packed,” she said. “I like going places and seeing new states. But when I get home, I’m kind of happy because I have some time to relax.”

The freedom to train during the day and travel frequently is possible thanks to her enrollment in Gwinnett Online Campus, a Gwinnett County Public Schools offering that allows students access to education online and in the classroom.

Hrastar has the option to attend school, typically from 9 a.m. to noon when she goes to class, or do her work online on her own time or while she travels. Her 11-year-old brother Jack, who plays baseball and tennis, also is

a Gwinnett Online Campus student.

Hrastar is the only high-level tennis player in her eighth-grade class at Gwinnett Online Campus, where her classmates include accomplished actors, actresses and musicians.

“My mom (Jennie) was walking into a library and saw this little sign for (Gwinnett Online Campus) and decided to look into it,” said Hrastar, who lives in the Peachtree Ridge cluster. “I like it a lot.”

The program has worked out perfectly with her tennis schedule.

“We love it,” Scott said. “(Our tennis friends) are jealous we have something like this in Gwinnett.”

Her latest trip to California would have been possible with or without Gwinnett Online Campus — it happened during GCPS’ Spring Break — but the school helped tremendously with time management over the past eight months. That fueled her improvement on the tennis court, as well as her latest breakthrough victory.

She plans to continue with the online program for the foreseeable future as she pushes toward a goal of playing college tennis at one of her favorite schools, either Vanderbilt, Duke or Stanford.

“A college scholarship is the main goal,” she said.

“If I can go professional, then I’ll do it. But if I can’t, a college scholarship is the goal for sure.”

Grayson senior Sierra Smith will be honored with a signing ceremony Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the high school’s media center. She is signing a letter of intent with the Jackson State (Miss.) softball program.

Smith, a four-year starter at shortstop, ranks second in school history in career doubles (24), career runs (88), career stolen bases (38) and career hit by pitch (13). She also is fourth in career games played at 119.

Grayson youth baseball team earns trip to Georgia-Florida tourney Grayson Athletic Association’s 12-and-under AAA baseball team has won two of its four USSSA tournaments this season, earning an invitation to the sixth annual Georgia/Florida Showdown Invitational this weekend in Valdosta.

Hebron Christian Academy senior Chris McGee will play football for Division III Guilford College next season. McGee is one of five players the Quakers announced the addition of on Monday.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound McGee was a four-year Letterman for the Lions at receiver and quarterback. He tallied 33 touchdowns his junior and senior seasons as he was named all-region. He was honorable mention all-county.

Capitals look to reverse fortunes in Stanley Cup playoffs

So much went right for Russian sniper Alex Ovechkin and his Washington Capitals this season that they might finally be set to reverse years of postseason heartbreak when the Stanley Cup playoffs open this week.

Ovechkin was the National Hockey League’s top scorer for a fourth straight year with 50 goals, goalie Braden Holtby tied the all-time mark for singleseason wins with 48 and Washington won the Presidents’ Trophy for finishing first overall.

The 16-team playoffs, with the winner of four grueling best-of-seven series earning the coveted Stanley Cup in June, open today with three games.

Washington begin its series Thursday against Philadelphia.

It’s the reason he enjoys being a defender.

“I like being the last person on the field,” he said.

“Just making sure that I’m the last one back. That I get the ball.”
