Ga. ‘teacher cheerleader’ visits Richards Middle School By Keith Farner keith.farner@gwinnettdailypost.com
LAWRENCEVILLE — Shirley Farrell is in her fourth decade as a teacher, but driving to Richards Middle School on Thursday, she noticed something different. Farrell’s school on its sign marquee welcomed Pam Williams, who works as education outreach coordinator for Gov. Nathan Deal, a position he created in January. Williams visited the school to thank teachers and staff for their work and dedication to students and the profession. Farrell’s reaction at the sign was “whoa” about a governor’s representative visiting.

A few months ago, the idea of spending a Thursday night during the holidays making a gingerbread house and playing games with family seemed unlikely to Army Capt. Joseph Orton. Orton was in a combat zone, patrolling Afghanistan for signs of trouble. Meanwhile, his wife, Victoria, and their young children, 4-year-old son Joseph Jr. and 2-year-old daughter McKinley, stayed with family in unincorporated Lawrenceville. Just before Thanksgiving, however, Orton received word that he was going to be able to come home for the holidays. So instead of chasing terrorists, he spent Thursday night chasing his son around Dave and Busters at Sugarloaf Mills during a party the Atlanta Falcons Women’s Association held for military families. “I wasn’t expecting to be home with the family, so the best present I could get is to be home for the holidays,” Orton said. His wife added, “We didn’t even know if it was going to be able to happen. It was really last minute. I found out a week before he got home that

Her husband, Cory, was in the Army as well, but recently retired after 10 years in the service. “I missed their first day of school last year and I missed it again this year,” the Atlanta mother said. Stacey Quinn, the wife of Falcons head coach Dan Quinn, said that’s one of the reasons why the women’s association wanted to hold the party for the families. The See FALCONS, Page 9A

Grayson woman, 20, dies in Wed. motorcycle wreck By Joshua Sharpe joshua.sharpe@gwinnettdailypost.com
A 20-year-old Grayson woman died Wednesday in a motorcycle crash on Loganville Highway, according to Gwinnett County police. The cause of the crash, police believe, was an improper U-turn by another driver, who is now facing multiple charges. Elizabeth Marooney was the passenger on a Suzuki bike driven by Josiah Still, 18, when Lawrenceville man Ismet Ismet Huskovic, 72, turned Huskovic around in the road near Patricia Terrace, a police report released Thursday morning said. “(The motorcycle) swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid a collision,” the report said. But the front of Huskovic’s Toyota Sienna struck the right side of the motorcycle. Marooney and Still, whose relationship isn’t given in the report, were ejected. Marooney died at the scene and Still was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center with serious injuries, the report said. Huskovic, a native of Bosnia who is retired and jail records show has no local arrest record, remained in the county jail Thursday morning on $19,250 bond.
