The man killed in a Barrow County plane crash Sunday has been identified as a celebrated 81-year-old Dacula pilot. Billy K. Bryant died after his small aircraft went down on a golf course at The Georgia Club country club in Statham, authorities
said Monday. The incident comes a month after Bryant was awarded the prestigious Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award, which the Federal Aviation Administration gives to aviators who have maintained safe operations for more than 50 years. There’s been no word on what might’ve caused the plane to go down. Lt. Scott Dakin, spokesman
for the Barrow emergency services department, said 911 calls about the crash came in at 2:30 p.m. “Upon arrival of Fire Personnel and Deputies we found a plane on the ground near the 3rd hole of one of the courses,” Dakin said in an email Monday. “It was a small plane with the pilot deceased on the scene. There was no fire involved.”
The FAA is handling the investigation. Authorities haven’t said where Bryant, who was reportedly alone, was headed. The 81-year-old was a volunteer for Angel Flight Soars Inc., a Chamblee-based organization that arranges free flights for people in need of travel for medical care. He
Billy K. Bryant, who died in a plane crash Sunday, received the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award in November for 50 years of safe flying. Officials haven’t said what caused him to crash. (Special Photo)

BUFORD — When Missy Fryer brought her 1-year-old twins Kade and DJ to Mall of Georgia on Tuesday, it was to finish up some last-minute Christmas shopping. Little did she know the shopping trip would turn into the boys’ first visit with Santa Claus. “I’m not sure how they’re going to do,” the Grayson mom said as she readied to set the twins on each knee
of the bearded man wearing spectacles and a warm smile. A few tears were shed, but all was well because the photographer was able to snap a few successful shots of teary-eyed Kade and a slightly apprehensive DJ. Visiting Santa at the local mall is a long-time family tradition, according to the boys’ Nona, Ellen Gasco, who is in town from Florida for the holidays. “I’m just so excited I got to be here for their first time seeing Santa,” she said. The Drifters hit Christmas song was not about fog and rain, but that’s the kind of Christmas that Gwinnettians will experience this week. The late morning rush hour on Tuesday was through dense fog that caused the National Weather Service to put out an advisory through the morning. A flood watch was also issued through 7 p.m. on Christmas Day for central and north Georgia where three to five inches of rain is expected. The flood watch report issued from the NWS office in Peachtree City said an “unseasonably warm and moist pattern will result in multiple rounds of heavy rainfall … through the end of the week.” Forecasters also said it’s a long-duration and complex heavy rain event where some rivers and streams may take a couple of days to respond and flood even after the heavy rain ends.
